Dr. Louis was one of the first surgeons in Chicago to use the Direct Anterior Approach to perform total hip surgeries. He prefers minimally invasive options, in order to give his patients the best chance of recovery and return to normal life.

For over 20 years, Dr. Louis’s ultimate goal has been providing the greatest treatment possible for every patient, whether they are getting a hip replacement or have been in a motorcycle or car accident. Using the latest advancements in medical technology and relying on a skilled medical team are two important aspects of Dr. Louis’ work. He loves to help his patients recover from difficult injuries, and help them get back on their feet, back to work, and back to living a healthy and happy life.

As the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Dr. Louis is well-known for his affable nature and dedication to his patients and fellow doctors. He has been the Chairman of the Operating Room Committee, and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. He has also has privileges at LaGrange Hospital.

In order to guide the next generation of doctors, Dr. Louis works as an instructor for the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF). He is a clinical instructor at the Direct Anterior Approach Total Hip Arthroplasty. In this role, he trains residents and healthcare professionals alike, giving them the quality education they will need to practice in the field.

As for his own education journey, Dr. Louis first earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Economics at Colorado College. He took premed courses at Columbia University. He then began at the Feinberg School of Medicine Northwestern College, where he earned his medical degree. He then completed a residency and an internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Next, he completed a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He is board-certified in Orthopaedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS has the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for Orthopaedic residents and surgeons, and evaluates their qualifications and competence.

To stay up-to-date on advancements in the field, Dr. Louis maintains associations with the American Medical Association, the International Orthopaedic Trauma Association, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, Illinois Orthopaedic Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, DuPage County Medical Society, Illinois Orthopedic Society, and the Orthopedic Trauma Association. He is affiliated with the Hinsdale Hospital and Salt Creek Surgery Center.

Awards for his esteemed work include Top Doctor in Orthopaedics by US News and World Report, the On-Time Doctor Award (2016-2018), Patient’s Choice Award (2017-2018), and the Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2017-2018).

In his spare time, Dr. Louis enjoys giving back to the community as a member of the Adler Planetarium Board, and as Chairman of the Collections Committee. He is the founder of Hinsdale Community Rowing. He loves to spend time with his family and enjoy the great outdoors.

The Direct Anterior Approach for total hip replacement is a tissue-sparing alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery that provides the potential for less pain, faster recovery and improved mobility because the muscle tissues are spared during the surgical procedure. The technique allows the surgeon to work between muscles and tissues without detaching them from either the hip or thighbones – avoiding trauma to the tissues.

Compared to traditional hip replacement, which involves an 8 to 12-inch incision from the side or back, the direct anterior total hip replacement is a front (anterior) approach with a smaller incision, three to four inches long. When Dr. Louis performs this type of surgery, it is not necessary for him to cut any muscles or tendons around the hip. This means that patients have more freedom of movement after surgery and leg lengths are equal at the end of surgery. Also, dislocation rates are lower and recovery is faster and less painful.

Dr. Louis of Hinsdale Orthopaedics uses a highly specialized operating table allowing X-rays to be obtained during the surgery. This ensures precise placement of the implants, resulting in more functional hip mechanics and equal leg lengths.

The idea for a rowing club in Hinsdale was first thought of by Dr. Steven Louis, a father to children that rowed at east coast prep schools. He and his wife, Amy have rowed for years on the Des Plaines River and they thought it would be conducive for a high school team.

Here Dr. Louis is rowing at a club outing and encouraging local young people and their families to come out and enjoy the river activities and great surrounding wildlife.

My wife and I at the start of the American Birkebeiner. This was my 18th year participating in the race. Over 10,000 racers gear up in all events during the weekend and about 3,750 ski racers for the 51K skate event I participated in.  This year I finished in 4:53 minutes. Not my best but I was happy with it. It was a nice warm day, 10 degrees at the start and warmed up to 15. The day before and after would have been a start of 10 below 0…… that would have been cold!

To enthusiastic off-road bicyclists from across the country, the annual trek to the Chequamegon
(She-wa-me-gon) Fat Tire Festival presented by Trek means fat tire racing and fat tire fun. Each year in mid-September, thousands of fat tired fliers descend on the towns of Cable and Hayward in northwestern Wisconsin to take on the off road bicycle tests of endurance and agility offered throughout the weekend.

From the  27 cyclists who lined up to ride the unknown trails of the Chequamegon at the first Festival in 1983 to the sold-out, limited field that is currently chosen by random lottery, the Festival is one of the nation’s greatest grassroots events.

During this year’s event, Dr. Louis rode 40 miles of beautiful, yet challenging point-to-point rolling glacial terrain, one of the area’s steep forest courses. Combined with the congenial welcome of the Hayward and Cable communities who provide a tireless volunteer army, the support of Presenting Sponsor – Trek and a cast of other generous sponsors, the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival has earned its iconic rank in the sport today.

Dr. Louis is an avid cyclist who enjoys many endurance and
agility bicycle racing events throughout the year.

I cannot put down in words how much you and your team have changed my life.  When I say “changed”, I mean you literally restored my quality of life.

I had been putting off undergoing a hip replacement surgery for approximately 5 years.  As a former runner and tennis player, I knew I had some hip problems.  I managed my pain with hip injections for 4 years, until I could no longer bear the pain.

When I met you, I was surprised by your kindness, sense of humor, and genuine concern for me.  Although I was startled when you told me I would need to have BOTH of my hips replaced (and heck, here I thought I was going to get off “easy” with having one hip replaced), it ended up being the best route for me to take.

From the moment I met you that first day in the Hinsdale office, you and your entire team took top-notch care of me and helped calm all of my fears.  I never had a problem with setting up my surgery, contacting a support person in your office for insurance help, reaching out to your support R.N., Mary, who was so kind and answered any questions I had over the course of my recovery.  You truly have an amazing team at Hinsdale Orthopedics.

My surgical procedure and subsequent care by the recovery room staff, and the nursing staff, and physical therapy team at Good Samaritan Hospital was overall, a good experience.   Yes, this IS a funny thing to say about a surgical experience.  Perhaps because I was sooooo scared of the surgery and the procedure, I was expecting something else.

My bilateral hip replacement surgery was scheduled for the morning, and by 6:00 p.m. the same day, I was eating dinner and chocolate chip cookies!

I arrived at Good Samaritan Hospital early Thursday morning, and was released and sent home by 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.  

It has been almost a year since my surgery, and I am 95% back to living my life the way I want to live it.  I’m back in the gym, able to walk up and down stairs, and I feel like I am once again a participant in my own life, instead of being sidelined by constant pain.

Thank you truly, Dr. Louis, for changing my life.  Your skilled hands and those of your surgical team allowed me to regain my quality of life.
