This album was dubbed for me on a cassette when i was stationed in Japan. The music was ahead of its time and the production was next level in 1985-86. Kurtis Mantronik could rock beats today for some lucky eemcee! MCTEE was a nice rhymer and was sorely missed when he broke out. Hip-Hop was young then not much radio play or video. This album was the meaning of underground Hip-Hop.

Best Hip Hop Album of the year
This album is excellent. The beats are top notch and MC Gab's lyrics and flow are immaculate. In a world where 'shake your laffy taffy' gets radio play, this cd makes you appreciate what hip hop can really be. This is a smart cd which is a breath of fresh air.

Pure Unclassified Dopeness - 100% Masterpiece
Founder of the phenomenal Diggin' In The Crates Crew (D.I.T.C.), Lord Finesse will arguably be the sickest punch line emcee you will ever hear. In my opinion, no emcee can match Finesse's microphone dexterity. No emcee can match his lyrical endurance. And I dare you to find an emcee with superior wordplay. No, you've never quite heard an emcee lace a beat quite like Finesse. The only comparable emcees in terms of skill would be Rakim & Big Daddy Kane. His multi-syllable verses are among the elite. A hip-hop head not owning this classic album is like an R&B fan not owning Marvin Gaye "What's Going On".

Finesse & DJ Mike Smooth signed to the legendary Wild Pitch Records in 1989, and in 1990 they dropped "Funky Technician" on the scene like a ton of bricks. The producer lineup is ill - DJ Premier, Diamond D, Showbiz, and of course the scathing DJ Mike Smooth.

This album is a wildly boisterous and exciting ride. It doesn't creep up on the serious tip in the least really. This duo is about dope beats & ill rhymes. And very few duos can execute this somewhat narrow spectrum with such vivid success. Tracks like "Funky Technician", "Back to Back Rhyming" featuring A.G., "Bud Mutha", "Just a Little Something" are just a few examples of the perfection these guys have to offer. There isn't a wack track in the bunch.

Despite the stellar lineup of talent, this album never received the respect it's due. In which case, it remains wholly underrated. And to the unconverted, without a question, you need this in your collection as soon as humanly possible.

This is garbage from the start to the finish of this mockery of album. What happened to the u-god on the wu tang albums? all the lyrics are weak, the hooks suck, and the beats are weak also. That is a very dangerous combination. This album is so bad I almost want to recommend that u-god stops rapping. This album displays how weak he is (on the solo tip) and how much he needs the rest of the wu to help him pick a good beat and produce some decent lyrics. U-god should never stray too far away from his clan.

This cd from start to end will keep you entertained and the lyrics will give you goosebumps. This is a must buy cd for true underground hip-hop fans. Check out the other cd's by Josh Martinez(Buck up Princess and Midriff Music). Check out Sleep's other cd's(From the group Oldominion - One, and solo albums by Sleep - Christopher). All in all, one of my favorite cd's in my collection.

T-Bone "Bone" Album Review

Stellar introduction to the art of T-Bone Walker
Nice introduction to the work of T-Bone Walker! He was one of the best of the bluesmen. The liner notes from the CD provide nice background to Walker's work. Many heard him live when he was well past his prime, not knowing the full skills of his art.

Even two songs illustrate. . . .

"Bobby Sox Blues" was an early popular song of Walker's. The backing group supports his singing well. He displays a smooth singing voice. The song itself spoofed the teenagers' giddiness over Sinatra and Eckstine.

And then there is his iconic ""Stormy Monday. . . ." This is one of the great blues tunes. Walker's voice serves this song well. The backing instruments have a clean sound and back the singer very nicely. The liner notes say that "If T-Bone had done nothing more in his career than write and record this one tune, his esteemed place in the history of American music would be guaranteed." His singing emphasizes classic lines such as:

"They call it Stormy Monday,
But Tuesday is just as bad.
Wednesday's worse,
And Thursday's also sad."

All in all, then, this is a fine introduction to the work of T-Bone Walker.

GOD VS. SATAN.....The 2 sides of Da Motomouth!!
Jakki is a battle mc pure+simple with an extraordinary vocabulary and ill metaphors. His delivery is clear+sharp with a gruff Tame1-esque voice. Having heard him with his crew MHZ on "Table Scraps" afew years ago and seeing him in action tearing mc's apart on numerous Scribblejam dvd's I was dying for him to drop a solo album. So when this dropped awhile ago I snapped it up. Although Jakki is predominantly a battle mc he also has afew different tracks on here that are very original+leftfield at times such as "Cleptobrainiac" (a tale about teaching a guy how to steal), "Abduction" (battling an alien for Earth), "Broken" (how he feels after everythings gone wrong in his life), "Positive Rap" (after hearing he has a disease he goes on a rampage) and "Left". However when he gets going on beats with his normal flows its off the charts. Tracks like "Radiofriendly", "Stage Fright", "Break Wit' Ease", "Relax", "Wha's Fu*kin' Wit' This" and "Raw" are all amazing with some of the tightest lyrics you'll hear. With afew guest shots from Copywrite enhancing the tracks aswell it really boosts the album. The only thing that took away from this were afew mediocre beats and so many interludes. Other than that its an excellent addition to your collection.

This CD is basically a collection of Maestro's best works plus his best new stuff (indicated by a *)

Any fan of Maestro will surly be pleased with this CD. Whether you grew up with his old school work (when he went by Maestro Fresh Wes) or you like his more recent rap style, like I do (now he just goes by Maestro), this CD offers the best of both. It has the best selling Canadian hip-hop single of all time 'Let Your Backbone Slide' (although its not my favourite), and other brilliant old-school tunes like 'Drop the Needle' and 'Stick to Your Vision'. You notice the changing of his style such as in 'Poppa Stro' and 'Perseverance' that is no doubt the result of rap evolution. Westcoast and Eastcoast 'gangsta' style rap is reminiscent in his new stuff like 'Heat Seekerz' and 'Criminal Mind'; these are the songs with the hot beats that you crank up your bass to! But Maestro isn't a gangsta, his lyrics are intelligent and thought provoking; such as his cry for peace overseas in 'God Bless Da Child'.

I only recently discovered Maestro when I heard his single 'God Bless Da Child' on the radio a couple years back. Since then I learned of his great influence on Canada's rap industry and knew I had to buy at LEAST one of his CDs. This is the perfect CD because it was just recently released and can still be found in stores (unlike his older releases), I'd advise those interested to buy it ASAP before it's gone. It was a great price and I was not disappointed.

Maestro is probably Canada's greatest rapper to date. He basically represents Canadian rap, the only other Canadian rapper I've heard on radio is Kardinal Offishall. However, Maestro has been in the rap industry since the 80s and he's still got it! Maestro is strong and able to adapt to the competitive rap industry. Like I said earlier, this CD is a collection of his best classics and his great new works. Hopefully this isn't his last CD and he'll still rock Canada for years to come!

Common "Be" Album Review

Becoming
The lyrical sense of Common on "Be (Intro)" embraces time and hope of a future and freedom over an orchastrated arrangement of instruments. From the concrete jungle of the streets, "The Corner" featuring The Last Poets, give statistics of violence and the lifestyle of the ghettos. Including witty contents such as "...now I roll in an Olds with windows that don't roll / down the road where cars get broken in and stole..." give vivid images of the surroundings. "Go!" is one of the highlights of Be with the subject of exploring sexuality and experiences over high pitched keys. The two verse "Faithful" where depth unheard of in the genre with verse one Common questions spirituality and beliefs of God being a woman. The second verse is about monogamy challenges of men and the struggles overcoming temptations. The scene set in a court where a woman "Testify" has the verdict making front pages throughout the trial. "Love Is..." expresses the power of the word giving and feeling it to change lives missing in this genre as a message. Both "Chi-City" along with "The Food (Live)" highlights lyrical delivery as Common has long been noted for. The multi-layered horn section of "Real People" gives a jazzy feel to complete the feel of the album and its direction. Attacking gossip on "They Say" featuring Kanye West & John Legend directs anger of media and what listeners should believe. Closing with "It's Your World (Part 1 & 2)" featuring The Kids reaching goals and living out dreams. As nine of the eleven tracks were produced by Kanye West with strong singles for a solid album as a whole. Common showed on Be the growth and his maturity expressed in a genre that is oppressed and plagued with self-indulgence. Thank you.

Jazzy Breaks
For me, this is the perfect album: it is the most perfect combination of Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Breaks. It's almost completely instrumental, and is wonderful for listening at work (I'm a programmer so music with lyrics is distracting) or entertaining guests for us 30-somethings: adult but somewhat edgy.

This album is what the term "Jazzy breaks" was invented for!

Maspyke "Static" Album Review

Static Shock
Maspyke quietly hit with their first release "The Blackout" which garnered them street acclaim and with additional singles to push their abilities to the masses made sure that their presence would be felt. Now with the release of "Static" they show that they have not only arrived, but plan to move in and start paying rent. Buyers beware, this is not a cd of hooks, melodies or even club bangers. The album is a true heads record, reminiscent of Mobb Deep's "Infamous" release from the mid 90's. Some of the stand out tracks are the infectious "step" and the immediate follow-up "The writer." Maspyke make sure to deliver some of the same in your face lyrics while their producer, Roddy-Rod, come with the beats that are well crafted to the type of style and delivery the lyricists provide. The album's only shortcoming is that some of the production when you listen to them straight throught tend to come off as slightly unpolished and almost as though they rushed to put it down. However, the way it hits definitely makes the "unpolishedness" a minor oversight. Maspyke is not for the feint of heart. So true heads venture forth and feel some of that static.

TALK ABOUT REFRESHING
During this time of watered down hip hop and ring tone albums, Blue Scholars "Bayani" is definitely a breath of fresh air. People, this is what hip hop is supposed to sound like. Tight production, strong lyrics, and great beats make this my favorite album in the last couple of years. If you love hip hop then you need to cop this. If you don't love this then your either 15 years old or you aren't a true hip hop head. Just pop this cd in and let it ride, you don't need to hit the skip button. GREAT EFFORT!

Deep Rooted "Deep Rooted" Album Review

This is one of hte most interesting releases on the Smalls label, though it's also one of the most "difficult". Ned Goold is a saxophonist with a highly original approach--he's a big fan of Monk, & he has a curious angular style that can suggest an unlikely cross between Charlie Rouse & Warne Marsh, with some truly earbending note choices & a fondness for phrases that rise up sharply (whereas most players tend to follow the path of least resistance down the cycle of fifths). He has worked out a harmonic system for himself that allows him to overlay 12-tone patterns over standard changes--on Goold's recent visit to Toronto I got him to say a little about it, which I found fascinating. In short, it's challenging music, not least because he writes oblique tunes (why am I not surprised that one of them is an allusion to _Ulysses_?--"Whatness of Allhorse") & likes to perform them in an unadorned tenor/bass/drums situation (here, Ben Wolfe & Ron Steen) that requires you to listen hard to follow along. Even his choice of "standards" is offbeat: how often do you hear "Heigh Ho the Gang's All Here" or "Rosalie" on a setlist? He makes his bread & butter playing with Harry Connick's band, but his own music is about as far from Connick's retro-stylings as you can imagine. Three cheers for Connick, then, for giving him an unusual opportunity on the 1999 tour that led to this album: Goold's trio was the warm-up act for the Connick band during that tour, & this CD is a compilation of the results (originally just put together for Goold's own satisfaction, but when he played it for Smalls labelowner Luke Kaven, Kaven decided to release it commercially). It's genuinely bizarre to hear such uncompromising jazz performed in front of thousands of people--on a few tracks the audience talks noisily throughout, but on others they seem to be listening quite respectfully or with enthusiasm. Considering the fact that there recordings weren't originally made for release, the sound is pretty good, & if you love the sound of the great Sonny Rollins trios or Konitz's _Motion_ this CD will likely hit you in the sweet spot. & you should also check out Neal Caine's _Backstabber's Ball_, which features the twin tenors of Goold & Stephen Riley.

Public Enemy "Power to the People and the Beats" Album Review

Strangely disappointing sound production quality
Let me begin by saying I am a huge Public Enemy fan who was expecting to absolutely love this CD. Yet, I found one flaw was very disappointing: The CD sound has a strange tinny quality in several of the songs. Something is just off. The music doesn't sound as compelling with this small, but noticable change.

I have absolutely no rational explanation for why someone would change the sound mix from what worked in the original recordings. I don't know if it was done intentionally or on accident, but clearly, something has been changed just slightly in several of the recordings. "Fight the Power" is the most notable example.

I feel sad, like someone drew a moustache on the Mona Lisa or chipped off the nose of George Washington's face on Mount Rushmore. Why would someone mess with perfection?

I Bought the album feeling Pras deserved a couple bucks since he really hasn't been active in the industry for a couple years. I was even a little hyped up when I grabbed it hopeing for some ole skwel Fugees type of joints or something.

To be blunt, the album is below average especially for the artists who collaborated.

A few beats are decent like "Friend or Foe" "One Monkey Don't Stop the Show" & "Angels Song", but the rest I couldn't listen to.

Unfortunatly Pras is a rapper. Great tone of voice, but poor lyrics.
You can tell the writting and vocal production was rushed throughout the album.

I was disappointed. But the 3 beats I feel give hope. He should work on another album to redeem this unorganized album.

The songs on the album provide a range of sounds from deep soulful ballads like 'Confession' to funky-driven Hip Hop tracks like 'Stand Strong' to 'Changes' which is a modern reinvention of the UK sound that Massive Attack was once popular for. Even though she sings more than raps, she claims Hip Hop as her primary musical roots and an important source of her inspiration. You can call it Hip-hop Soul if you want to, but as most real artists, Nneka doesn't like labels. Even more important for her thoughtful lyrics are her origin and upbringing in Nigeria. "I get inspired when I take a severe look at the things going on in our world today; especially in my country. How people live, suffer and endure pain, politicians and religion. Why is that parental advisory label on this cd?
After all, This is an instrumentals cd!!!!!!!!!!!! You don't have to worry about hearing no profanity on this cd because there are no vocals on this cd anyway!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, If you're an aspiring rapper or dj or just simply a beat junkie, I advise you to check out this instrumental version to Sabac's Sabacolypse Now album. The original version with the vocals was already a hot album in itself, But this took it to a whole nother level! Necro really did it on this one. You get a whole cd of east coast beats [Most of which have an old school, Wu-Tang feel]. Best beats are tracks 1, 3, 6, 7, and 13. The metal version of A change gon come is a major highlight as well [And i challenge you to rap to this beat if you have this cd]. In my opinion, Sabac is still the best rapper to come out of Non Phixion. He has a raw, political, Public Enemy-Meets-Early Ice Cube feel to his rhymes. But, on this instrumental version, You get to see what made his cd so hot and i seriously think that Necro should quit rapping [I seriously think he is by far the wackest rapper on the psycho-logical roster and he's the owner!] and just stick to making beats. He seems to have a talent for producing, as evidenced in this cd. Oh, and to let you know, All former members of Non Phixion have solo albums out and all of those albums in addition to this one have an all-instrumentals version to them. The Shock "Shock City" Album Review

MAD WORDPLAY
The high points of Beans career, in terms of records, happened on Anti Pop Consortium's first album "Tragic Epilogue" and here on his second full length solo effort "Shock City Maverick." Although my greatest rapper list is comprised of freaks and wierdos, this album alone has ushered this man right to the top. Where "Tomorrow Right Now" faltered in terms of being too self-involved in its experimentation, this time around he keeps the beat going even when his voice takes a break, which is more often that you might expect considering the going trend where rappers/emcees are afraid to even take a breath between the chorus and the verse. Seriously, that unsaid rule is as dumb as the rule about making a rap album that's well over an hour long, even if that means that half of it is comprised of skits. Anyway, thankfully Beans refreshes with this 39 minute exercise where all the herky jerky stuff is removed and replaced by layer upon layer of razor-sharp synth lines and ultra funky high paced drum patterns that ironically rarely venture away from the boom-bap (IE: no clear techno or jungle influence), but not for the sake of sacrificing weirdness. This is still esoteric space rap, but this time it feels like the biggest party this crew has ever thrown. Beans vocals are also extremely palatable as he devours the mic like a cyborg vulture, resisting the far extremes of Kool Keith or Busdriver, but finding a middle ground that I suspect both those artists could appreciate if Beans didn't spend most of his time overseas, which you can't blame him for when most American artists don't even get their own joke they are making by feeding such a hillarious stereotype. Seriously, shouldn't 50 know by now that we like him only when he's so goofy that it's not even real anymore? Fans of Kool Keith's Black Elvis persona, or Deltron 3030, should adore this Beans album, and yet somehow I doubt they are even aware, maybe. Oddly I seldom find kinship over my enjoyment of this group, except among neo-jazz enthusiasts (thanks to Matthew Shipp I presume), which is crazy because he comes out like the long lost twin of Rob Sonic on this outing (now that would be an excellent collaboration right there). Anyhow, back to my best-of list. Here are the Hip-Hop albums that have emerged around roughly the last 5 years or so which I personally feel have reached new ground in terms of being very off-the-wall with creativity and abstraction, but still easy to bob your head to: Beans "Shock City Maverick," Aesop Rock "Bazooka Tooth," Rob Sonic "Tellicatessin," EL-P "Fantastic Damage," Dr Dooom "First Come First Served," Del the Funky Homosapien "Both Sides of the Brain," Mr.Lif "I Phantom," Madvillain "Madvillainy," Sole "Selling Live Water," & Dalek "Absence."

This compilation is fly.This includes all the essential cuts from 88-94. Its only weak spot is no cuts from YO! Bum rush the show, but you can throw this disc on and let the bass kick and close your eyes and start a revolution. Excellent mix of songs from the aforementioned era, taking you from It takes a Nation to Apocolypse 91 and then a couple songs from Fear of a Wack Planet, then back to Nation and so on.This disc stokes you even if you have heard It takes a Nation a million times becuse of the mix of cuts from each disc. Although P.E. has many more def jams, this is a great starter for the latecommer or a great single consolidated mix of bass in your face for the fans that were down since day one. If you are traveling and dont want to carry around a ton of discs, but desire a shot of Chuck and Flav to fire you up, fire this up G.

There are those who insist that "real rap" is dead, that it was killed by R&B and Gansgsta and Crunk. They are the ones who stopped listening.

Busdriver gives hip-hop a new direction with rapid-fire, esoteric lyrics with a sophistication and intellectualism that rises above the collegiate Chubb Rock; like Professor Griff without the agenda.

"Unemployed Black Astronaut" is the showcase track here, a catchy tune with a sing-along chorus that deep down unloads double cynical barrels on mainstream hip-hop, major labels, even racial and urban-cultural divisions. He continues his lament against both mainstream music and cultured music critics with "Reheated Pop Sensation", a song-length prostration parody.

Even Busdriver's own adoptive subgenre of music is fair game for the rap critic of rap, with "Avantcore" glibly mocking the contrarians of underground/alternative hip-hop. The album ends with remixes of three of the album's showcase tracks.

No, rap is not dead, it never died, you just fell off. Time to get back on the bus.

this dude is nutts on the mic, can't say I knew much about him prior to this album. Had heard him on 1 or 2 songs, and knew he was down with Celph Titled. This album is really solid. It's way over the top, and really fun. A lot of people might find it tasteless and disrespectful, but the content is so obviously aggerated one should be able to laugh at it. Skits are almost always a low point for me, but this album has some outstanding skits. The one where he's dreaming the Devil was talking to him and telling him "you're album's not coming out!" kills me. It's so rediclious and stupid! Lyrically Majik is much like his homie Celph Titled, and always saying something unexpected. The talk of Russian Mafia dudes on ski's shooting at them is beyond explination. Him & Celph get busy togeather over the same beat Dre & Ren flipped over almost 20 years ago. There's not any real touching moments, no songs about his mom, love or whatever. This is just a really retarded record, and it works.

Why is this lumped in with metal
I feel like necro is a stooge for metal. Hatebreed and who ever else wants to associate themselves with Necro probably do it as a goof to place theyre sound into the rap realm in a not to serious way. I don't hear anythihng relevant to metal with Necro. It's pure straight up rap. People mention the beats but, so what? Dr. Dre blows this poser away when Dre did Natural born killers. What the hell is so special about sampling music from a computer program anyway? literally takes no skill that any idiot can do. Playing an instrument takes skill which is something necro doesnt come close to doing.
As far as the necro sound, All Necro does is throw in some metal names and evil theme's into his raps but otherwise there isn't any creative union with metal. I can't imagine any metal guitarist wanting to do live riffs with necro. I saw them in the sounds of the underground tour and they only thing they succeeded on doing was getting most fans to go on a 45 minute lunch and bathroom break during their set. Sure there were a handfull of necro fans that were doing a stupid pit (one of the most pathetically small one's you will every see with Necro chanting "pit Pit"). The rest of the fan's that could stomach watching them were yelling to get off the F'n stage.

DEFINITELY WORTH IT!!!
I couldn't think of a better way to start the new year...getting my hands on this CD! I've been waiting for this album since I first heard "The Process" grace my ears from the speakers of my friend's car. It's like a breath of fresh air in comparison to alot of the music that has come out lately.

Dope beats, dope lyrics...good music, great content...what more could you ask for. I've been to a few of their shows and they never disappoint. Definitely worth the buy!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Breakthrough "Breakthrough" Album Review

Promising debut album
Elliott and Chris Daughtry were my favorites on American Idol's season five. I can't believe that neither of them won. In this time of the Idol-lites (Katharine McPhee, Taylor Hicks, Ruben, etc.) being dropped by their record labels, to hear someone like Elliott who has the potential to be a real artist is refreshing. The album is okay, there are a few good cuts ("Wait For You," "I'm the Man," and "A Song For You" come to mind) surrounded by a lot of pleasant filler. This guy has the vocal talent to produce really great work. Here's hoping that he doesn't become part of the pop-machine that chewed up and spit out the others. He's on the right track with this album, even if he's not all the way there yet. He's young and he is at the start of a very promising career.

Good from SV...back to the old
This CD is a very good mix of some Slum Village new and old. I actually played this album more than I did SV.

I really wish that El and T-3 would get back with Baatin. I miss him in the group. Yes I have much love for SV, this group has been through alot of changes. I want T-3 and El to make another classic with Baatin. Especially now that JayDee has passed on, as a tribute to Jay.

This album is worth purchasing because it reminds you so much of the material SV put out when produced by Jay Dee and also offers a taste of some new production from Gunna.

Slum is a very innovative and unique group which I love and I hope they keep producing quality material. They are my "Sequel" to A Tribe Called Quest".

I bought my 2 year old daughter this cd for a 12 hour road trip we took and I was so surprised at how much she loved all the songs. She hasn't seen most of the movies so I wasn't sure if they would keep her attention - but they did and now every time we get in the car she asks for her princess cd.

Keeps hipop alive in the '05
Yeh without a doubt this is a great consistent album from BX's own, Access Immortal. I first heard of him offa Oktober's "madvandal" and when I heard he had a debut on the way, I had to check it out. The main thing i was suprised with about this album is how many great guests Access Immortal managed to get for the album : Wordsworth,7L,Insight,Oktober,Velocity,Smiley Da Ghetto Child, J Zone & others!! Despite this, AI seems to hold his own on this album throughtout, determined not to get outshined by some of hiphop's underground heavyweights. However saying that, the best thing about "Shades of reality" is definitely the beats courtesy of Vanderslice,7L,JZone,Green Steez,Insight & Sesion 31. In this respect, the album is flawless. Peep this album to find some nice post 2000 hiphop that shows that hiphop is still innovative & refreshing. Peep it.

Here I was thinking yay another good anti mainstream hip pop album and yet when I listen to this... I find this album to be worse than mainstream. These beats are HORRIBLE, there are a couple of decent songs like My Eyes, but that doesn't mean the album is good, you must rate it in a whole. In a whole this album is ridiculous, and clotted with odd beats that shouldn't mix with others to make one song

This was my first introduction to Eligh, having heard(or rather listed) his name dropped on the internet. I decided to check him out, and going to the local record store, found Enigma(that being the only Eligh release they had). When I popped it in I was stunned, half the tracks were tight instrumentals and there was a live guitarist jammin away on some tracks. And furthermore, Eligh's flow and lyrics are dope! It turns out that Eligh produced all the beats on the album, and they are equally tight and atmospheric. This was a great buy, especially since these days I am a little weary about purchasing CD's from artists I have never heard of(sometimes only half of the album is good and the rest is filler). But with Eligh, everything about this album is mysterious and top notch. Eligh's lyrics are both intellectual, infectous and positive. I highly recommend this album to hip hop lovers and musician lovers worldwide.

I LOVE TONEDEFF BUT....
...but he could've done better. don't get me wrong,i'm not saying this album is wack,but the production is shaky in places. it might be because he did a lot of the production hisself. if he left the production to kno(from cunninlynguists)the album would've been excellent. lyrical tonedeff is almost flawless,but some of his concepts should've been a bit more thought out.plus he has "fillers" throughout the album.songs like "pervert" could've & should've been left off.if you're the type person that listens to hip hop for lyrics you should check this album out,but if you only listen for beats this might not be for you.stand out tracks are "quoteables" & "heavyweight".

Bicasso "The Many Faces of" Album Review

Tighter than a new pair of Adidas (4.5 Stars)
I got a few albums by Bicasso that were only released on tape back in the mid to late 90s. Back when the Living Legends were known for slangin' tapes, Bicasso had some of the dopest releases from the crew. He has always excelled with his innovative concepts and unique approach to making beats and writing lyrics. Sure, most of the tapes back then sounded just awful, since they were 4-track home recordings, but never lacked an ounce of soul or ambition.

Needless to say, Bicasso has come a long way in the past 10 years of making music, and "The Many Faces of..." is evidence of his most vast improvement to date. I always thought Bicasso had the best ear for beats in the LL Crew, and this is a fine example of how well Bicasso produces, engineers and structures his songs to perfection. The choruses and hooks are on point as usual, and his flow is getting better as the years drive on.

Although short (34 minutes), this limited edition spring 2005 EP will please all Bicasso & Living Legends fans. After the tail chasing intro, "Hit It & Quit It" drops in beautifully with some tight tone-crazed production. "What's Cool?" also remains a favorite with a very memorable chorus and hook. On "Royalty" Bicasso boasts a unique accent with his flow that sounds a bit British. It is apparent that his flow has improved over the course of the past few years. With a title like "The Many Faces of...", you should expect some different styles; and "Fantasy" adds more to the color of Bicasso's canvas of sound. "Dam* (Do the Job)" may be my favorite joint here, with some very unique beats and a nice personal set of lyrics.

Overall, if you are new to Bicasso, this actually serves as a fine intro to his work. Although I would recommend "Living Life Lookin' Out" as a first purchase, this album contains slightly tighter rapping, and perhaps a better engineering value than it's predecessors. It's nice to see Bicasso maturing so well with yet another quality release. LEGENDS BABY!

Crop Circles 720 is hip-hop at its true form.
This CD was given to me by a friend who produces some of the beats for CC. He has been ranting on and on about how good they are so when I received it, I was pretty interested to hear how they sounded. I was quite amazed the first time I heard it. The lyrics are intellectual and meaningful, which REAL hip-hop is about. The beats are typical underground style, since the underground scene is mainly evolved around LYRICS not BEATS even though some of the beats on this album are something that you would enjoy flowing over. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes REAL Hip-Hop at it's true form, not that fake crap that they play on the radio.

The Perceptionists "Black Dialogue" Album Review

Their Perception is Our Reality
Let me be the first to admit I know next to nothing about hip-hop. That being said, I know gold when I hear it, and Boston-based hip-hop group The Perceptionists is it. Their 2005 disc, Black Dialogue, has all the makings of a star disc: the break beats, smooth rap, dope lyrics and righteous rhythms. The disc flows naturally from one track to the next, and even got my scrawny white butt grooving. In fact, the grooves are so good, my whole body started moving.

The Perceptionists is a trio made up of Mr. Lif, Akrobatik and DJ Fakts One. The trio have been working together as far back as 1997, with DJ Fakts One doing the cuts for Lif's single "Electro," and Lif lending vocals to Akrobatik's 1998 b-side "Fat S-t." In fact, the liner notes of Lif's 2000 song "Avenger" read: "Akrobatik and Mr. Lif combine to form The Perceptionists." But it took until 2005 to come up with their debut, Black Dialogue, released on New York label Definitive Jux.

Although all three rappers had solo careers, releasing albums with Definitive Jux and Coup D'Etat labels, they blend seamlessly into a tight group. Definitive Jux's Web site describes them as "three brothers from other mothers," hailing their close working relationship: "[The Perceptionists] have been to different continents together, blown up each other's cell phones to get to airports on time, shared bad fast food meals at truck stops. Truth be told: road warriors have bonds that are stronger than studio associates will ever know about."

The album is totally real, without an ounce of pretense. Two tracks that stand out are "Black Dialogue" and a righteous rant against our current president, George W. Bush, and the lack of weapons of mass destruction is Iraq, "Memorial Day."

The title track is a scorching diatribe against selling out, a shout-out to African-American cultural leaders of the past and present, and a hymn to the power of hip-hop culture: "Yo, Martin and Malcolm knew it / Black dialogue / Grandma Moses drew it / Black dialogue / Stevie Wonder seen it / Black dialogue / Many games to steam with / Black dialogue / Chuck D took a stand for / Black dialogue ... The whole world is after / Black dialogue." "Memorial Day" takes the position of supporting American troops, but cussing out leaders, mostly white ones, who sent them to die for a lie.

Rounding out the album, "Love Letters" and "Breathe In The Sun" are two soulful and plaintive love songs, told with a hip-hop sensibility. With this black dialogue, The Perceptionists have created a set of songs that leave listeners with something new to think about on every listen. Whether they're tackling institutional racism, sociopolitical issues, or just shooting it about love and life in some Jamaica Plain living room, each track is a massively mind-bending groove. Sometimes they're angry. Sometimes they're heartsick and soulful. Sometimes they're comedic. But each time they spit out the good stuff. The Perceptionists are an auditory wonder.

Def Jux Presents, Vol. 3 - reveiw from New Zealand!
To start, EL-P aka EL Producto deserves alot more respect for his work on this record.
Unlike the vast majority of reveiws, I rate this album.
Its not just the efforts of 1 or 2 MC's that make it dope, its a good sample of quality jux as a label,and after a few spins you'll see why. I give it the 4 stars solely on the fact that it could have been compiled in a better order or maybe a couple of other tracks added to the mix. Overall its a must have for any indie hip-hop fan.

This is what Mainstream - Hiphop should sound like..
Unfortunately, mainstream-hiphop is really bad. I really hated the whole genre 'hiphop' because of 50 Cent, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and the other clowns. This is sublime hiphop. Exiting and interesting beats and soundscapes, first-class-rapping and the experimantial feel these guys have. They have a few lesser tracks, but most of them are great. My favourites are 'Leave Home' with a guitar in it, 'Cray Grazy' wich is the most relaxing hiphop-track ever (great track to drive through the nights), 'Serial Boxes' wich has great beats and best for last: 'Killer Drones On Street' wich has an amazing chilling and mysterious sound, the intro gives me chills and scares me a bit, great atmosphere..
But don't worry, the other tracks are certainly great too, this is an album that every hiphop-fanatic should have in his collection, let those idiots listen to G-Unit and other morons, you have this!

Justin Timberlake's Girlie Voice Ruined This Song
"Signs" by Snoop Dogg, Charlie Wilson and Justin Timberlake could have been a lot better. it has good lyrics but is ruined by Justin Timberlake's girlie voice. Someone else should have done the chorus. In verse 2 he asks a woman 2 questions : 1. "You wit your friend, right?" 2. "She ain't trying to bring over no men right?" Timberlake uses his girlie voice for the responses "yeah" and "no". That I can understand. Anyways, Justin Timberlake and Rap do not mix. Can you imagine what Timberlake sounds like when he has an orgasm?

A Wild Trip
Ever since I heard "Primitive Plus" I was hooked on Edan like the crack emcee's were smoking. It seemed like an eternity for this album to come out, and when it finally did, I was honestly a bit disappointed. Not because the album is not good; it's flippin fantastic.

Two reasons for my disappointment:
1) Too short. Only a bit over a half hour.
2) The hilarious lyrical content of "Primitive Plus" is almost non-existent here. There are a few sparse gems but nowhere near the nonsense he was spitting before.

That being said this is still a phenomenal album, and mostly because it is SO different from his debut, it shows how great of an artist Edan really is, and how musically mature he can be. The concept of this album is wild. He combines psychedelic guitars and effects with sick beats and some sweet collaborating artists (Percee P, Insight, Mr. Lif). The positives far outweigh the negative...this album is disgusting good, and even though he's only released two albums, I'm thinking this dude can do no wrong.

Wow, amazing
I can almost never give out 5 stars to CD's. I think I gave one to Atmosphere's new drop. All I know is I never heard of him, or any Canadian rapper. I downloaded the CD, and within a week bought 2 CD's from this guy. Some of the best, most origional rapping I have heard. Great production. Classified has amazing rhymes, delivery, and production, it makes an amazing CD. One of very few I highly recommend. You will not go wrong with this Can-uck. I have only listened to Trial and Error and Boy-Cott, but I would say buy Boy-cott and see what's up.

Not quite what I was expecting :-l
This is a good cd - it's just that it wasn't quite what I thought it would be like. I've got their other cd and I loved that. I love their style of music, but this was a little over rap heavy in some parts. Their sound is always great, but to me there are only three stand out songs. I love Who's Wit Me, Obsession (great version) and Baby I'm Back. They are fantastic songs. Baby Bash are a great group and this is a great cd, it's just that I didn't end up liking as many songs as I hoped I might.

Baby Bash grew up with his Latin side of the family. His Mexican mother and Anglo-American father both eventually became addicted to heroin[2]. Growing up, his uncles and grandmother exposed him to many different types of musical genres. Bash had aspiration of becoming a professional basketball player, but he now works as a songwriter and rapper. He had planned to play basketball for the junior college he attended in California during the mid 1990's[2]. After his first year, however, he began selling crystal meth and dropped out after discovering that he was more likely to make fast money through dealing than the likelihood of becoming a professional basketball player[2]. Bash eventually tore his ankle several times without surgery, permanently ending the possibility of ever playing basketball at even a semi-professional level. [edit] Career Baby Bash's career began to rise when he went to Houston, Texas, where he met fellow rapper South Park Mexican. Thus, he decided to re-locate there. Prior to his success as a solo artist he, under the name "Baby Beesh", was part of rap groups Potna Deuce, Latino Velvet and N2DEEP.[3] Bash's debut album entitled Savage Dreams was released on the independent label Dope House Records in 2001[4]. The acclaim he received soon caught the attention of Universal Records, who signed him later that year. In 2003, Baby Bash released his first album on a major label, Tha Smokin' Nephew, and Super Saucy in 2005. He recently was featured in Paula DeAnda's first single "Doin' Too Much" from her debut album Paula DeAnda. He has collaborated with numerous other artists during his career, such as West Coast rappers B-Legit, Coolio, E-40[5] and Mac Dre, R&B singers like Akon, Avant, Natalie, and Nate Dogg[2], and other Latino rappers such as Fat Joe, Frost[5], and Pitbull.[6]. He continues to write lyrics for singers such as Paula DeAnda, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Hudson and Frankie J[1]. His third studio album, Cyclone (initially titled Ronnie Ray All Day)[7], was released in late October 2007. So far, Baby Bash has released three singles off the album: "Mamacita" featuring Marcos Hernandez, "Na Na (The Yummy Song)", and "Cyclone" featuring T-Pain. The month of the album release, Baby Bash became Myspace's #1 Latin artist[1], and the single Cyclone had over 750,000 digital and ringtone sales prior to the album's release[1]. Baby Bash is presently working on a new film entitled Primos starring Chingo Bling and Danny Trejo. The comedy involves three cousins working in a bakery with dreams of making money, and is slated for a 2008 release[1]. His major-label debut Tha Smokin' Nephew was well-received by the All Music Guide[8], but his 2007 album Cyclone was given mixed reviews, for example being panned by Rolling Stone magazine.[9]

certainly not the first, hopefully not the last
Very strong in the realm of beats - this is much more melodic than Emanon's previous work. Yes. Previous work. To check out their other albums, you may want to start with Steps Through Time for a compilation of their underground hip hop years that will inspire you beyond words. You may have to dig for it.

Sure the production is better on this album, but I feel a lot of the emceeing and the lyrics lose the gripping power of Emanon's work from the late 90's. I'd give it a 5 in relationship to most other hip hop out there these days, but my expectations for Emanon are sky-high.

Always conscious, intelligent, clever, talented, and poignant, Emanon still ranks somewhere at the top as far as underground hip hop artists are concerned.

better than most is no excuse
Yea, i know that LMNO is better than most mc's out there, but this cd is almost a complete waste of my time. There is a god or jesus reference in just about every song. LMNO's lack of diverse content just gets way too boring. About 3 songs into the album, you feel like you are at sunday school. I mean that's cool if that's all you really wanna hear, but i like music about a variety of topics, and i think others like me were just as bored with this album. LMNO's lyrics just seemed way too complacent and at times his delivery even makes him sound like he's not into it. The production is pretty good and was one of the only things that got me through the entire album, but lyrically LMNO comes off boring.
