Almost none of Musk’s trillion is income, which means almost none of it gets taxed like yours. It is stock, held, borrowed against, and passed down. The playbook is legal and boring: buy assets, borrow against them to live, and let the gains ride untaxed until death wipes the slate. Tesla shareholders already approved a pay package last November that could hand him another trillion in stock over the next decade. The rules were not broken to produce this outcome. The rules were written for it.

The diversity and enjoyment that Bleachers fan base has also allowing for them to have opening for them on select dates this June of their tour, Momo Boyd.  One of the very talented members of very talented sibling group, Infinity Song.  Momo a rising star in R&B/Soul solo wise and not just as a part of Infinity Song.  Recently putting out her highly touted and critically-acclaimed debut solo EP and project, Miss Michigan. Opened the evening and night with a very soulfully amazing set.  In which she was not only able to show off her absolutely soulfully smooth and beautifully amazing voice by performing most of her EP, but was also along with her backing band able to show off her own very amazing skills as a guitar player as well.  One heck of a performance that was the perfect way to start such a great night of music that was sure to gain Momo many new fans as well.

With about 30-45 minutes in between time before Bleachers started to take the stage.  Mikey Freedom Hart, Evan Smith, Mike Riddleberger and Zem Audu all started to take the stage slowly one by one.  Starting to play guitar, drums and bass before lead singer Jack Antonoff came out in the rain.  Starting to sing the groups very triumphant opening track, sideways, from their most recently a few weeks ago released critically-acclaimed latest album, everyone for ten minutes.  Before so seamlessly transitioning into the very amazing second track from said album with, the van.  Bringing the energy up even more with the crowd fully dancing and singing along to the group’s very popular single, Modern Girl and then Jesus Is Dead from their critically-acclaimed 2024 self-titled album.

 Jack would then somewhat lighten the mood by giving a speech about how everybody has lost somebody.  Before getting the mood back up by having many in the crowd along with him singing in such perfect harmony the lyrics to the groups very popular single, everybody lost somebody.  As Mikey played keyboards Evan and Zem triumphantly played the saxophone. The group continuing to bring the triumphant feel-good vibes with their very also very popular track, dirty wedding dress.  Both Jack and Mikey giving an absolute crazy dope guitar duo play towards the end of their performance of the track.  Jack also changing part of the lyrics to, “Not everybody can roam of what Chicago knows.”  Which got a real roaring ovation from the mostly Chicago crowd.  The group perfectly transitioning from dirty wedding dress into, we should talk.  That got a very amazing slowly creeping and clapping to the front of the stage performance from the guys.

As we got to the about midway point of Bleachers set and performance, Jack sat back with Mikey first playing guitar at the front stage and performing, you and forever.  Jack slowly coming to the front of the stage singing as Mikey joined him on vocals.  Then slowly transitioning into such a perfect cover of Lana Del Ray’s very amazing single, Margaret, they are featured on. 

Bleachers bringing the upbeat energy again as they performed, Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call, in such unison with their fans at the fairgrounds of the Salt Shed singing along.  While they band triumphantly played and sang.  Perfectly transitioning from that into, take you out tonight with the crowd clapping along so joyously along with the group. As Jack’s dad joined the group on stage playing guitar.  With Jack singing and playing guitar alongside his father and Mikey, as well as bothEvan and Zem jamming out so triumphantly on sax for one of the most wholesome and amazing moments of the night and performance.

As we got even closer to the latter end of the night and performance.  Jack gave a speech about his beginnings and the smaller glimmers he had in the beginning of his career before the group was successfully formed and how he goes back to those as reminders.  Whenever he needs them for inspiration.  Then getting the crowd just in the right mood for what is still arguably the groups most popular song to date, Rollercoaster.  As he also told the crowd how he appreciated everyone in the crowd that helped him and the group get to where they are as group.  Teasing the track before saying, “And I think if this band never gets to the point that I always dreamed of.  Which is you and nothing more than, YOU!  We wanted you when we played Lincoln Hall.  We wanted you when we played at the Metro, we wanted you at the Vic.  We wanted you at the Ritz.  We wanted you here.”  To absolutely thunderous cheers that grew as Jack named each Chicago venue they have played throughout their illustrious career so far.  Also adding, “It is an honor, an honorto say you been with us two nights at the Salt Shed.  It is an honor to start our tour like this.  We wanted you and not nobody else.  Anybody could come in, but we wanted you.  When we play this song it brings me all the way back to the beginnings.  And all the way on the glory of those long shows.  And right now I am thinking about all of those magical fvcking shows in Chicago.  All those really small shows and then even when they got piss big it feels like a sweaty club and makes me want to say, ‘Get up and get on your fvcking shoulders.  Get up.  Get up and pointing to everyone to get up.”  Jack and the crew then finally bringing the energy completely up as the whole crowd started to sing in such unison the familiar chorus of, “So come a little closer.  There is something I can tell, yeah.  You are such a rollercoaster.  And a killer queen you are.  Rollercoaster, I don’t say no.  Rollercoaster when you don’t say no.  Oh, and it’s such a rollercoaster.”  Then perfectly transitioning into their also very upbeat and popular track, Tiny Moves, from their critically-acclaimed 2024 self-titled album.

As they got to the final three songs.  Bleachers starting out by having the crowd clapping and singing along to, upstairs at the els.  The crowd singing even more in unison and perfect harmony with Jack and the crew as they transitioned so perfectly into, I Wanna Get Better.  Clapping along as well.  Singing and clapping as well as dancing along.  Bleachers absolutely rocking out even more as they closed their absolutely memorable and amazing performance with a very amazing performance and rendition of, Stop Making This Hurt.  The triumphantly amazing saxophone play off from Evan and Zem with Mike Riddlebergeron drums that he allowed to do a solo and Mikey on keyboardsas Jack shouted out each member.  The perfectly triumphant way to end such a memorable show and the second of two absolutely amazing sold-out shows in Chicago to start Bleachers current, BLEACHERS FOREVER Tour.  That Jack, Mikey and the rest of the band couldn’t have asked for any better of a way to kickoff their current tour.

If you thought the bar for running America’s intelligence community couldn’t get any lower, the Trump administration just handed you a shovel.

President Trump appointed Bill Pulte, the current director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as Acting Director of National Intelligence on June 2. Pulte replaces Tulsi Gabbard and now oversees all 18 U.S. intelligence agencies. His qualifications for the job? He runs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, inherited a homebuilding empire (Pulte Homes), and has proven himself a loyal soldier willing to use government records against Trump’s political opponents.

That last part is the quiet part out loud.

What the DNI Actually Does

The Director of National Intelligence coordinates the CIA, NSA, FBI intelligence division, and 15 other agencies responsible for keeping Americans safe from foreign threats, cyberattacks, and terrorism. Federal law requires the DNI to have “extensive national security expertise.” Pulte has zero experience in intelligence, military service, or national security of any kind.

What he does have is a track record of weaponizing his housing agency role. As FHFA director, Pulte sent criminal referrals to the Justice Department alleging mortgage fraud by Trump’s political enemies, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, Senator Adam Schiff, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, and former Representative Eric Swalwell, according to CBS News and NPR reporting.

Even Republicans Are Saying No

This is not just Democrats sounding the alarm. Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican and senior Intelligence Committee member, told PBS: “I see no evidence of any qualifications for that job.” Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell warned publicly that Pulte lacks the experience the role demands. Senator James Lankford, another Republican, questioned whether Pulte could serve long-term in the position.

Senator Jack Reed, the top Democrat on Armed Services, called Pulte “the most unqualified official in the history of the intelligence community to assume such a critical role.”

Two men were arrested on suspicion of disturbing public order, three others were removed for carrying signs promoting Holocaust conspiracy theories, and the National Holocaust Museum publicly rejected a mayoral invitation for the rapper to visit.

President Trump sat down with Wisconsin farmers on Friday, promising that fertilizer prices would drop back to where they were before the U.S. war in Iran sent costs skyrocketing. He talked fuel. He talked feed. He even talked about the Reflecting Pool and fountains, because apparently that is where his mind goes when the people in front of him are worried about keeping their farms alive.

The Promises

“We’re going to come out, and your fertilizer prices are going to go way down, just like they were four months ago,” Trump told the roundtable, according to The Hill. Energy and fertilizer costs have surged since the Iran conflict escalated, squeezing margins for farmers across the Midwest and beyond.

On its face, this is standard presidential reassurance. Every administration talks to farmers when commodity prices spike. But here is the part that never makes it to the roundtable: who is actually sitting at the table, and who never gets invited.

Where Are the Black Farmers?

Black farmers make up less than 2% of American farmers today, according to the USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. That number was 14% in 1920. A century of discriminatory lending, USDA loan denials, and land theft (documented extensively by the Environmental Working Group and the Federation of Southern Cooperatives) decimated Black agricultural ownership.

Damon Dash is back on your screen, and this time he is not in front of a courtroom or a tabloid headline. He is behind the camera, directing a new five-part docuseries for BET called OG STORIES, premiering June 17, 2026, at 11 p.m. ET.

The series, which Dash created, directed, and hosts through The Dash Group LLC, spotlights self-made moguls and cultural figures through raw, unfiltered conversations. BET describes the show as “an unfiltered look into the lives of people who built empires from difficult beginnings,” with each episode centered on survival, entrepreneurship, and legacy.

Who Shows Up

The guest list already signals where Dash is taking this. Episode one features Michelle Smalls, widely known as the “Queen of Harlem.” Episode two brings in Dawn Florio, the celebrity defense attorney who represented Tekashi 6ix9ine and Lil Tjay. Steve Mack, Dash’s longtime friend and collaborator from the Roc-A-Fella Records era, anchors another episode. Two additional guests remain unannounced.

Damon Dash helped build one of the most iconic labels in hip-hop history with Roc-A-Fella Records alongside Jay-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke. OG STORIES represents something different: Dash using his platform and relationships to document the people whose stories rarely get told in full.

BET is also making a bet here. The question is whether Dash, who has always been more comfortable being the subject than the journalist, can hold space for other people’s stories as effectively as he tells his own.

Now, for the first time ever, the foundational mixtape catalog of DJ Screw is officially available on major streaming platforms, and the implications stretch far beyond convenience.

Robert Earl Davis Jr., known to the world as DJ Screw, created an estimated 300-plus mixtapes before his death on November 16, 2000, at just 29 years old. These “Screw Tapes” became the blueprint for an entire subgenre of hip-hop, chopped and screwed, that transformed how Houston heard music and how the world eventually heard Houston. According to The Source, the long-guarded archive is now being officially released on major streaming platforms, opening these recordings to a global audience for the first time.

On her new album Big Mama, released today (May 29), the Atlanta rapper dropped “Gimmie Dat,” a track that appears to directly address lingering tension with Cardi B. The bars leave little room for interpretation: “B*tch said what? Let’s clock it / Really got a Hermès store in my closet,” Latto raps, a clear reference to Cardi’s reported attempt to smooth things over with a luxury handbag after a leaked 2025 phone call where Cardi made disparaging remarks about her.

The Backstory

The Trump administration made it official on Thursday: if you are an American exposed to Ebola overseas, you are not coming home. Instead, you are going to a 50-bed field hospital the U.S. is building in Kenya, set to open Friday.

Let that sit for a second. The United States government, with the most advanced healthcare infrastructure on the planet, has decided that the move is to quarantine its own citizens on foreign soil rather than treat them domestically.

What We Know

Senior administration officials confirmed the policy Thursday, according to The Hill. The facility in Kenya will house Americans who were potentially exposed to Ebola. If someone actually tests positive or develops symptoms, they will reportedly be transferred “elsewhere” for advanced care. Officials could not clarify where “elsewhere” is. That vagueness alone should concern everyone.

This is a government that spends $886 billion annually on defense (Department of Defense), operates military hospitals across three continents, and runs the CDC, NIH, and USAMRIID (the Army’s biodefense lab at Fort Detrick). The capacity exists. The choice not to use it is political.

Why This Matters

Here is where this connects to a longer pattern. During the 2014 Ebola outbreak, rhetoric around the virus was already racialized. Africa was treated as a monolith of disease rather than a continent of 54 nations. Aid workers and missionaries who contracted Ebola were flown home for treatment at facilities like Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. The question now: what changed?

When citizenship does not guarantee your government will bring you home for medical care, that is a fundamental shift in the social contract. And if you have been paying attention to how this administration handles immigration, border policy, and who counts as “American enough,” this fits a pattern. The people most likely to be in affected regions of Africa, whether for humanitarian work, family ties, business, or faith missions, skew heavily toward Black and brown communities.

This is also a public health transparency issue. “We will send them somewhere” is not a plan. It is a press conference answer designed to avoid follow-up questions. Americans deserve to know where their fellow citizens will receive care if they get sick serving abroad.

The Bigger Picture

Hip-hop has always understood what it means when the government tells certain people they are on their own. From Hurricane Katrina to Flint’s water crisis to COVID-19 vaccine distribution inequities, the pattern is consistent: the communities with the least political leverage get the least protection. Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) said it plainly on “Mathematics”: the numbers do not lie about who gets left behind.

A quarantine facility in Kenya is not inherently wrong. International health infrastructure matters. But building one while simultaneously refusing to bring Americans home for treatment sends a clear message about priorities.

What You Can Do

Contact your congressional representatives and ask them directly: does the U.S. have a plan to treat American Ebola patients, or just a plan to keep them away? Three decades ago, the American Black Film Festival planted a flag in the sand, literally. What started as a necessary counterweight to an industry that routinely sidelined Black creators has become one of the most important annual gatherings in entertainment. This year, ABFF returned to Miami Beach for its landmark 30th anniversary, and the lineup made the milestone feel earned.

Regina King, Taye Diggs and Chloe Bailey headlined the festival’s programming, which featured major premieres, intimate conversations and what organizers described as a renewed focus on Black storytelling, according to AllHipHop.

Three Generations, One Stage

The headliner choices tell the story of where Black Hollywood has been and where it is going. Regina King, an Oscar and Emmy winner whose directorial work on “One Night in Miami” proved she could command both sides of the camera, represents the generation that kicked doors open while the industry barely cracked them. Taye Diggs, whose breakout in “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” helped redefine Black romantic leads in the late ’90s, bridges the gap between ABFF’s founding era and today. Chloe Bailey, still building a filmography alongside her music career, represents the generation inheriting what festivals like ABFF built.

That generational span is not accidental. It is a statement about continuity.

Why ABFF Still Matters at 30

Founded by Jeff Friday in 1997, ABFF launched during a period when Black independent film was booming but industry infrastructure for Black creators barely existed. Festivals like Sundance were (and often still are) predominantly white spaces. ABFF created a pipeline: filmmakers who screened early work at the festival went on to build careers that reshaped the industry.

Thirty years later, the landscape looks different but the need has not disappeared. Despite the post-“Black Panther” surge in greenlit projects, recent industry data shows contraction in diversity commitments across major studios. Streaming platforms that once courted Black audiences aggressively have pulled back spending. ABFF’s continued existence is not nostalgia. It is infrastructure.

Why This Matters

Black film festivals are not just celebrations. They are economic and creative ecosystems. ABFF has historically served as a launchpad for talent that Hollywood’s traditional gatekeepers overlooked. In an era where DEI programs face political backlash and studio belt-tightening disproportionately affects underrepresented creators, independent platforms like ABFF become more critical, not less.

The festival also pumps significant revenue into Miami Beach’s local economy, demonstrating the commercial viability of Black cultural events in a climate where some municipalities have been hostile to them.

ABFF at 30 is proof that when an industry will not build a table for you, you build your own. The numbers are in, and they tell a story this country keeps trying to ignore. According to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 8 percent of the U.S. population was uninsured in 2025. That is about 26 million people walking around without a safety net when their body breaks down.

On the surface, the rate looks stable compared to 2024. But dig into the details from the CDC’s National Health Interview Survey and the picture gets uglier. The actual number of uninsured Americans grew by approximately 800,000 people, including 300,000 children. Let that sit for a second. Three hundred thousand kids added to the list of people who have to think twice before going to the doctor.

Why This Hits Black Communities Different

Black Americans are uninsured at significantly higher rates than white Americans. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the uninsured rate among Black adults has consistently been nearly double that of white adults in recent years. That gap is not accidental. It is the product of decades of policy choices, from states that refused Medicaid expansion to employer-based insurance systems that leave out hourly and gig workers disproportionately.

The CDC noted the 2025 uninsured rate remains lower than it was in 2019, before pandemic-era Medicaid protections kicked in. But many of those protections have expired. The continuous enrollment provision that kept millions covered during COVID ended in 2023, and states began disenrolling people, a process that hit Black and Latino families hardest according to reporting from KFF and the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families.

The Money Problem Nobody Talks About

Being uninsured is not just a health problem. It is a wealth problem. Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy filings in the United States, according to research published in the American Journal of Public Health. For Black families already navigating a racial wealth gap where the median white family holds roughly eight times the wealth of the median Black family (Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances, 2022), one emergency room visit without coverage can erase years of financial progress.

And those 300,000 newly uninsured children? Uninsured kids miss preventive care, dental visits, and mental health support. That is not just a today problem. That is a generational problem that shows up in school performance, workforce readiness, and long-term earning potential.

What Needs to Happen

The twelve states that have not fully expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act need to stop playing politics with people’s lives. Congress needs to make enhanced marketplace subsidies permanent instead of letting them expire and renegotiating every few years. And community organizations in Black neighborhoods need to keep pushing enrollment drives, because millions of people who qualify for coverage still do not know it.

Health insurance is not a luxury. It is infrastructure. And right now, 800,000 more Americans are trying to build their lives without it.

Taking place on Sunday, June 14th.  This one day new inaugural Chicago festival has a little bit of a fusion of everything ranging from great music to great food and nightlife culture.  That begins at 11am in Chicago’s famed Grant Park with a fusion of mostly R&B from the 11am opening to 4pm. Before such legendary Hip-Hop acts as Busta Rhymes to Fabolous, The LOX and 2 Chainz, among others take the stage for performances from that 4pm slate to late evening.  With legendary DJs, DJ Envy and DJ Drama also set to take the stage in Grant Park for what promises to be an epic day of great food and epic concert experience in the heart of downtown Chicago. The event promises a full day that celebrates the legacy, influence and evolution of Hip-Hop. With many on the lineup not just being artists and performers, but to quote a press release on the highly-anticipated event, “These artists aren’t just performers – they are pillars of Hip-Hop. LEGENDS is about honoring the voices that shaped the culture and continue to inspire generations.”

The festival also set to feature an all 100% curated vegan food selection for the vegan centered feast headlined by some of Hip-Hop’s more notable name recognized legends of the late 90’s and early 2000’s.  That late 90’s and early 2000’s vibes also among some of the most legendary and prime in both Hip-Hop and R&B.  Which is why it should be no surprise that following Chicago’s most recently successful inaugural summer festival, Forever Mine Festival, which took place this past Memorial Day weekend and also celebrated that same classic time frame in both R&B and House music.  That, LEGENDS, is also focusing on legends of that same time frame, but on the Hip-Hop side of things.  For what has the promise of being another great Chicago festival to look forward to and the only real possible downside being that it is just one day.

LEGENDS, still has a lot of promise though and is not only one of the top new inaugural festivals that will be added to Chicago this Summer.  But what also promises to be one of mine and several others most anticipated Summer festivals of the just recently started Chicago Summer Festival season.

Seven months after Cam’ron filed a $500,000 federal lawsuit against J. Cole over their collaboration “Ready ’24,” the two rappers have officially reached a settlement in principle, according to court filings submitted Tuesday (May 26).

Attorneys for both sides told the court they had “reached an agreement in principle” and were “finalizing the settlement papers,” with a completed deal expected within 30 days. The specific terms were not disclosed.

How We Got Here

The dispute traces back to Cole’s 2024 project Might Delete Later, which featured Cam’ron’s verse on “Ready ’24.” Cameron Giles, Cam’ron’s legal name, filed suit in October 2025 claiming Cole broke a verbal agreement. The terms, according to the complaint: Cam would contribute a verse in exchange for Cole appearing on a future Cam’ron track or on his popular podcast with Mase, It Is What It Is.

Cam’ron also alleged he was credited only as a co-author of the composition, not as a featured performer, despite his vocals appearing on the track. He wanted recognition as a co-author of the sound recording and an audit of royalties from Cole and Universal Music Group.

Cole’s legal team responded in February 2026, denying any binding agreement existed. Attorney Christine Lepera argued that Cam’ron had “encouraged and blessed” Cole’s use of his performance, viewing the feature as beneficial to his own career.

From Courtroom to Podcast

What makes this resolution notable is the path it took. Before the legal paperwork was finalized, the two sat down together on Cam’ron’s Talk with Flee Instagram page to hash things out publicly. Cole admitted he was initially disappointed by the lawsuit but understood Cam’s position. The viral moment showed Cole walking onto the set joking, “A lawsuit, bruh?”

That conversation apparently did what months of legal filings could not. The case was voluntarily dismissed in early March, and the formal settlement followed.

Why This Matters

Hip-hop has a long, ugly history of business disputes destroying relationships permanently. From producers getting ghosted on royalties to ghostwriters going uncompensated, the industry’s handshake-deal culture has burned more artists than any beef ever could.

M-Dok setting things off on the main stage to get the vibes going.  As he rocked many of the early Y2K and 90’s R&B and House hits to get those who still arrived somewhat early in the right good and fun mood for this fine Sunday the day before Memorial Day.  Nina Sky’s DJ then keeping the high vibesgoing before they came out to take the main stage.  Coming out to their hit single, Turnin’ Me On.  As they singed and moved and grooved back and forth.  Natalie then asking the crowd, “How y’all feeling out there?  Is y’all about to have a good time today?”  Her sister Nicole then saying, “Oh yeah!”  After the whole crowd yelled in agreement.  Natalie then saying, “So this next song is not our song, but if you know the words I want you to sing along.  Okay I need y’all to…”  Say my name, say my name.  Singing the chorus to Destiny Child’s forever timeless hit record, Say My Name and actually giving a pretty solid cover performance of it.  That had the crowd singing along to the very familiar words and chorus.  Asking if they can go into one of their more newer records, 4PLAY.  Going into it as they danced and sang the chorus to the very dance-centric record.  Their DJ coming from behind the booth to the front of the stage to dance along with Natalie and Nicole.  Asking if they can slow things down before then going into their Rick Ross featured single, Curtain Call.  Saying how this was their favorite chorus they ever wrote as they went into The Alchemist hit single, Hold You Down, which they are featured on the chorus.  Then going into their single, Champion Lover.  Nina Sky would keep their hit chorus they wrote going as they went into singing the very memorable chorus of N.O.RE.’s classic hit single, Oye Mi Canto, they are featured on with Daddy Yankee.  Their DJ screaming, “CHI-TOWN make some noise!”  The crowd erupting together in unison and Nicole then adding, “Alright I know y’all came to have fun today, right?” The crowd erupting again in unison.  Nicole then saying, “In the back.  Did y’all come to have fun today?  Adding a few more words before also asking, “Is it okay if we take it back to 2004 real quick?”  The crowd erupting with, “Yeah!”  Both Natalie and Nicole then going down to the crowd and photo pit to move around with the fans as they closed out their set with a very amazing performance of their always timeless hit single, Move Ya Body.

Chingy would take the stage not long after that going through many of his hits such as his verses from the remix of Still Tipsy to his own actual hits of Balla Baby to Holidae In, Dem Jeans, One Call Away, Pullin’ Me Back and Right Thurr.  Giving a pretty overall solid performance before DJ Pharris, who was once again the host of everything on the main stage for the whole weekend of Forever Mine Festival came out along with Sean Mac, who would keep the energy going and rocking throughout each intermission during this day two and final day of the festival.

The beautifully talented Mýa coming out in a stunning feathery silver shimmering dress and matching thigh-high silverboots.  Doing a whole dance breakdown with her backing dancers as she came out to her hit single, Fallen.  Right before going into her memorably famous chorus she sang on Pras’ hit Ol’ Dirty Bastard featured single, Ghetto Supastar.  Mýa with her dynamically great dance breakdowns, angelic smooth vocals and charmingly great stage presence was by far the biggest highlight of day two of the festival and really one of the biggest highlights of the whole weekend.  The mostly Chicago crowd really taking a liking to the beautifully multi-talented singer and entertainer, as she went through much of her hit records such as My Love Is Like…Wo, Case of the Ex and Lady Marmalade.  As well as singing the memorable classic chorus she sang on such hits as Beenie Man’s “Girls Dem Sugar.” Also adding in newer hits like Just Call My Name and ASAP from her recent critically-acclaimed latest album, Retrospect.  Mýa even adding a Michael Jackson-inspired like dance number with black and white fedora hat and matching black and white suit during her performance of her always classic hit single, My Love Is Like…Wo.  To show the great influence that the late great MJ still has on entertainers and performers like her till this very day.  If that wasn’t enough to build on the R&B nostalgia the festival was mostly based on.  Mýa also even sprinkled a fun and entertaining performance of her feel-good memorable chorus on, Take Me There, from the Rugrats The Movie soundtrack.

Mario would then keep things rocking by opening with his debut hit single, Just a Friend 2002.  Giving a really solid performance singing many of his hit records such as Music For Love, Keep Going (Aaaaahhhh), How Do I Breathe and Break Up.  Mario showed extreme vocals realness and why he is without a doubt one of the best vocalists you will ever see perform live.  Which was further confirmed by his very out of this world cover of the late great Whitney Houston’s classic, I Will Always Love You.  Mario ending his set with what is still his most popular hit single to date, Let Me Love You.  Which had the crowd really singing in great unison together with him.  Showing their great appreciation for R&B.

That great appreciation for great R&B music was further cemented by the next performer, Monica.  Who came out on stage decked in a biege top and matching jacket with thigh-high black boots.  Showing how long she and so many of the other performers from the weekend have been in the game.  Monica towards the beginning of her set shouted out Chicago legend and owner of the world-renowned George’s Music Room, George Daniels, who was in the pit and VIP area of the crowd for much of the two days of the festival watching most of the performances.  Calling him, “Everybody’s uncle” and adding how he was the reason so many legendary artists like her that are still around today got their first exposure they did here in Chicago in the 1990’s at the beginning of their careers.  Monica also thanking the fans by the main stage of Forever Mine for holding her down for her three decades-plus career.  Her smooth and funky classic sounds instantly taking the crowd back to those same 1990’s as she opened with such classics as Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Them Days) and Before You Walk Out of My Life.  Really getting the packed crowd in all their feels as they sang along.  Slowing down things even more with such slow jams and classics as U Should’ve Known Better, Why I Love You So Much, For You I Will and Love All Over Me.  Monica’s very strong and classic catalogue of hit records that are mostly all slower jams, which she performed several back-to-back.  That the crowd was still able to sing along to and hold their attention without any boredom.  Showing what a testament great R&B or music just in general when performed the rightway that fans of all ages will continue to appreciate, no matter what.  Monica bringing the energy up with a very energetic performance of her upbeat hit classic single, Everytime Tha Beat Drop, which she mixed with Chicago rapper Lil M.U.’s 2025 Chicago anthem, Top of Cars.  That even had Monica hitting Chicago’s famed percolator dance.  An angelic voice that will forever be timeless and classic, she capped her very amazing performance with a very emotionally moving performance of always classic and very timeless single, Angel of Mine.  That she prefaced with some words about her dad, who has been ill lately.  Something I can personally really relate to as earlier this month was the six-year anniversary of my own fathers unfortunately untimely passing.  Monica then closing with her 2003 smash hit record, So Gone.  Which the crowd really sang in great unison together with her.

The second and final day of the inaugural Forever Mine Festival would close with what is easily the most packed of the several decades I have attended any type of performance at Union Park.  As KAYTRANADA took the stage and hadeveryone in every part of the park moving their bodies.  The crowd never stopping dancing even as some of the very packed crowd started leaving early.  Dancing even as they made their exits from the park.  The mult-GRAMMYs Award winning producer and DJ showing that he could just hold the stage down on his own with just his equipment and a little light show.  Here and there.  KAYTRANADA would ask, “Chicago, how you doing?”  As he began his time and set spinning, Snap My Finger, from his 2024 Grammy-nominated album, Timeless.  Even cutting the bass at one point for the packed crowd to sing back in such unison to him PinkPantheress’ chorus to the record.  KAYTRANADA went and blended many of his hit records such as DON’T WORRY BABE/I GOT U BABE to YOU’RE THE ONE, Lover/Friend, ONE TOO MANY and Sossaup.  For the city that birthed house music, the way KAYTRANADA had everyone in the crowd in Chicago’s Union Park dancing together in such unison, even as some left the park and little early.  Showed that he was a perfect closer to the inaugural, Forever Mine Festival, that was such a true celebration of both R&B and House music the whole weekend.  That with the way everything went so smoothly and seamlessly throughout both days.  Also showed that, Forever Mine, is a festival that the city of Chicago should truly invest in again next year and plenty of more years to come.  The way it has so many great festivals throughout the summer months like it also has the last five years for Sueños Music Festival in Grant Park.  Which also played these past two days and celebrated its fifth year anniversary this year.  Forever Mine and its team definitely proved from people I talked in the crowd with throughout both days that it is festival that people are willing to come out and spend their money for years to come and they would really love seeing come back again for next year and even God willingly beyond that as well.

There is an Ebola outbreak tearing through Central Africa right now. People are dying. Communities are scrambling. And the country that once led the global response to infectious disease? It packed up its bags and went home.

The Withdrawal

The Trump administration dismantled America’s global health infrastructure last year, pulling funding, shuttering programs, and withdrawing from international partnerships that took decades to build. Now the first major Ebola outbreak since those cuts is testing what that absence actually looks like on the ground.

According to The Hill, public health experts say the gap is unmistakable. The U.S. is sending some resources and expert teams overseas, but the systematic support network that once allowed rapid containment is gone. The infrastructure that helped contain the 2014 West African outbreak, the largest in history, no longer exists in the same form.

Why This Matters

This is not just a foreign policy story. This is a story about who America decides is worth protecting.

When the 2014 Ebola crisis hit West Africa, the U.S. deployed thousands of military personnel, funded treatment centers, and led a coordinated global response. That response was built on relationships, embedded staff, surveillance systems, and trust developed over years. The Trump administration treated all of that like waste.

The communities paying the price are Black communities. Central African nations already dealing with conflict, displacement, and underfunded healthcare systems are now facing a deadly virus without the partner that once showed up first.

Hip-hop has always understood that neglect is a policy choice. When Kanye said “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people” during Katrina, he was naming something this moment proves again. Abandoning global health commitments is not fiscal responsibility. It is a decision about whose lives matter enough to fund.

The Bigger Picture

Infectious disease does not respect borders. The 2014 outbreak reached Dallas. COVID-19 started overseas and shut down American cities. Withdrawing from global health does not make America safer. It makes outbreaks harder to contain before they arrive here.

Every epidemiologist will tell you the same thing: you fight outbreaks at the source or you fight them at home. There is no third option.

The Takeaway

This administration chose to pull back from the world while a deadly virus spreads through communities that look like ours. That is not “America First.” That is abandonment dressed up as policy. Pay attention to who gets protected and who gets left behind. The pattern has never been subtle.

Senator Cory Booker just said out loud what a lot of people have been saying at the cookout for years.

Speaking on Sunday, the New Jersey Democrat declared that his party “desperately needs new leadership,” with the 2026 midterm elections now less than six months away. He pointed to “new leaders emerging” and “a new vision” as reasons for optimism, even as the party continues to search for its identity in the post-Biden era.

Coming from Booker, this carries weight. This is the same senator who stood on the Senate floor for over 25 hours in early 2025, physically putting his body on the line to protest Trump administration spending cuts. He is not a sideline critic. He is a player calling for a roster change from inside the locker room.

The DNC’s Identity Crisis

The Democratic Party has been stuck in a loop. Losses mount, the base gets frustrated, and leadership responds with the same playbook, the same faces, the same fundraising emails. Meanwhile, younger voters, Black voters, Latino voters, and working-class communities keep asking the same question: who is this party actually for?

Booker’s call for new leadership is not just about replacing names on a letterhead. It is about vision. The party that once ran on hope and change has been running on “at least we’re not them” for too long. That is not a platform. That is a concession.

Why This Matters to the Culture

Hip-hop has always understood something that political parties struggle with: you have to stay relevant or get replaced. No rapper keeps the same flow for 20 years and expects to headline festivals. The audience evolves. The sound evolves. The message has to evolve with it.

Black voters are the Democratic Party’s most loyal base, delivering margins that make or break elections cycle after cycle. But loyalty without reciprocity is not a relationship. It is exploitation. When Booker says the party needs new leadership, he is echoing what organizers in Atlanta, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee have been demanding: give us leaders who reflect our priorities, not just our votes.

With the midterms approaching in November, the stakes are real. Control of the House and Senate hangs in the balance. If Democrats cannot energize their base with fresh faces and a compelling vision, they risk repeating the same mistakes that cost them in previous cycles.

Booker is right, and saying it publicly matters. But words only count if they lead somewhere. The question is not whether the Democratic Party needs new leadership. Everyone knows it does. The question is whether the party will actually make room for it, or keep asking its base to wait one more cycle. The culture is watching. The clock is ticking.

Built on the nostalgia of that classic music and time period.  The festival not only featured much of the music we grew up on together.  But it also featured many vendors from that time period that you can shop while also watching the performances or in between watching the performances.  Which ranged from various airbrush spots to jewelry, fitted hats, different apparel and exclusive festival merchandise.  If you were lucky enough to get VIP for the festival, there was even a nail spot and place to get your hair cut among other things.  As well as a VIP seating area.  Built on the black and brown communities that helped raise and shape us.  The festival was as much about supporting our local cultural community vendors as it was the actual music being played and performed.

The festival kicking off with Baby Bash going through many of his hits such as Suga Suga, Shorty DooWop, the T-Pain featured, Cyclone, Baby, I’m Back and the Sean Kingston featured, What Is It.  Everyone in the crowd singing along to much of the hits they grew up on from Baby Bash.  As he gave a pretty solid and nostalgic performance over a sunny Union Park, that was the perfect vibes and way to really kickoff the festival the right way.  To really set a nice tone for the first day of the inaugural Forever Mine Fest.  A short intermission where Chicago’s very own DJ Ca$h Era played most of the R&B hits to keep everyone partying and having a good time until the next performer, Bobby V took the stage.  Going through many of his hits such as Pimpin’ All Over the World, Slow Down and Mrs. Officer, among other things.

The great afternoon vibes continued as Lloyd in all white outfit and dress shoes took the main stage.  Dancing back and forth to his hit single, You featuring Lil Wayne.  Even doing a carribean dance breakdown of the song.  Telling the crowd toyell back to him, “Go Lloyd!  Go Lloyd!!  Go!!!”  Everyone in the crowd chanting it back, as he sang and told them to singalong the very familiar chorus of, “This is how I feel.  I’m in need of love.  So let’s dip up out of here.”  As well as the other part of the chorus of, “Ha, ha-ha. Ha, ha.  She’s fine too.  But I want you.”  Then going into the Young Money hit single, BedRock he is featured on before an amazing performance of his very hit Ashanti featured debut single, Southside.  Ending the performance by saying, “If you got love for Chicago, Illinois.  Make some noise one time.”  The crowd erupting with noise before he added, “There is only a few things in life moneycan never buy.”  His DJ responding, “What is that Lloyd?”  Answering, “You know man things like love, like loyalty.  Like honesty and time.”  Lloyd then going into a very transformative and passionate performance of his very emotionally transformative and passionate single, Lay It Down.  Pulling out his guitar to go then into an emotionally moving performance of his very emotionally moving single, Tru.  Lloyd would then say how, “You know they say time is the only currency in life that we spend we can never get back.  I said time is the only currency we spend in life that we never get back.  So time is by far the most valuable thing we can share with one another.  I encourage you Chi-Town.  One of my favorite cities in the world.  I encourage you Chi-Town, city of beautiful people.  Ofall different colors and creeds.  I encourage you on this day to take a little bit of time out of your busy schedule.  Tell somebody you love them well you still can.  So often do we wait until it’s too late to say what is in our hearts and on our minds.  And it’s so many people I wish could be here to see us gathered here today.  That are no longer breathing with us.  So if you came here with somebody you got love for.  Your brother, your sister.  Your husband, your wife, your son, your daughter.  Your bestie, your cousin.  Your baby mama, your baby daddy.  Your coworker.  I want you to look somebody in the eye right now and say, ‘I love you mother fvcker!  Now let’s end it on a good note.”  Lloyd going back to the middle of the stage where Bobby V had came back out.  And them and everyone on stage, as well as the people in the crowd had a great and fun time swag surfing together.

DJ Ca$h Era coming back out like she did during each intermission with Power 92 and the Heavy Hittas world famous DJ Pharris coming back out to host like he did throughout the day during intermissions as well.  Pharris bringing out a surprise with Chicago’s very own hometown legend, Twista, to perform his hit 2009 single, Wetter.  JoJo after a brief longer intermission then coming out to perform many of her new and old hits.  That ranged from Too Little Too Late to Leave (Get Out), Start Over, off again and her official remix of Kehlani’s hit GRAMMYs-Award winning single, Folded.  JoJo saying at one point which I think holds true for what the festival is aiming at doing, but how R&B is currently in such a great space and how us along with her and many of those other great artists that played Saturday or are set to play and perform Sunday.  Really grew together with one another to bring so many great memories and moments in our life’s with each other through this music.  Forever Mine Fest just another layer to now add to all those great memories for even more of us.

That wasn’t all for Saturday and the first day of the inaugural Forever Mine Fest though.  As we got to the evening and the sun went away and temperatures really started to cool down.  When Juvenile as one of the lone Rap acts on the bill for the whole weekend came to perform with his 400 Degreez Band.  Going through many of his classic hits such Back That Azz Up, Slow Motion, Rodeo and Project B**ch.  Adding an interesting twist by performing the tracks with the band.  DJ Ca$h Era and DJ Pharris once again keeping the crowd going and having a good time before Kelly Rowland in a very interesting black outfit with a matching black hat and thigh-high black boots came out to perform.

Kelly going into many of her hits such as Dilemma, Without Me, Like This and Red Wine.  Plus covers of her Destiny’s Child classics Bootylicious, Soldier, Emotion and Girl.  Kelly dedicating Soldier to all of the soldiers who have fought for us that this Memorial Day Weekend is dedicated to.  As great and mostly on point as her performance was.  There was actually a scary moment when Kelly first started performing Emotion.  As someone in the crowd started to faint and waddle that she noticed and alerted the security and paramedics about.  Thinking that he was possibly dehydrated Kelly said how he had too much of a good time.  Singing, good night to him as he was carted off.  Kelly jokingly, but also seriously said about how everyone needs to remember to stay hydrated and look out for each other in instances like that.  Which the staff and security for the festival learned not only once, but twice.  As I wasn’t close enough to the front of the crowd for when that happened.  But there was also somebody that fainted and/or security had to check on in the middle of JoJo’s performance as well.  So well both Kelly and JoJo soldiered through their performances by not letting those instances distract them from still having memorable and great performances.  That also goes to show for those not only attending Forever Mine Fest on Sunday as well, but any festival or concert.  How important it is to stay hydrated through events like these.

The first day of the inaugural Forever Mine Fest closing out by Keyshia Cole coming out in a somewhat revealing black leather outfit and matching black hat.  A shining Keyshia on display in the back of the stage as she performed her hit single, Last Night.  Before then going into (I Just Want It) To Be Over, and I Changed My Mind, as well as I Should Have Cheated.  Keyshia taking a break before then coming back out to go into very passionate and stellar performances of Enough of No Love, I Remember, Heaven Sentand Trust and Trust and Believe.  Her performance of Heaven Sent saying how much it is still her favorite song to always perform and with the performance she gives of it each time.  Makes me love and appreciate even more anytime she performs it.  Especially when she breaks down thanking the lord and God for doing so.  Keyshia’s then going into Shoulda Let You Go and Let It Go.  Really having fun with the crowd singing and dancing along with just as much passion and fun as her.  Keyshia and her DJ saying how that was her time before she would eventually come back out after everyone in the crowd was told to light their cell phones or any lights they had before she came back out.  So that Keyshia Cole could end the night and first day of the inaugural Forever Mine Fest with a very passionate, emotional and fun performance of what is still her most popular single to date, Love.  That had everyone in the West Loop of Chicago’s famed Union Park singing and dancing along in such unison with Keyshia.  That showed once again why to me Keyshia Cole is still by far among the best performers I have ever seen live and why us here in Chicago always show her so much love too.  As she thanked Chicago at the end of her performance for coming out tonight and also declared, “I really love you guys.  I always have a wonderful time in Chicago.  God bless your families and children. Everybody God bless you.”

If you fly through Hartsfield-Jackson, and statistically you probably do, there’s a new layer between you and your luggage carousel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced enhanced Ebola screening at Atlanta’s airport for passengers arriving from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, where an active outbreak is raising global alarms.

What’s Actually Happening

The CDC is deploying health screening stations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest airport on the planet, as part of the federal government’s emergency public health response to the Ebola outbreak spreading across Central and East Africa, The Hill reported Saturday. Passengers arriving from the three affected countries will undergo temperature checks, health questionnaires, and potential secondary screening before entering the terminal.

Atlanta joins a short list of U.S. airports with enhanced protocols. The move makes logistical sense. Hartsfield-Jackson processes over 90 million passengers annually, according to airport authority data, and serves as a major hub for international connections, including routes with stops in African nations.

Why This Matters to the Culture

Atlanta is not just an airport hub. It is the cultural capital of Black America right now. Home to some of hip-hop’s biggest institutions, a massive Black professional class, and one of the largest African diaspora communities in the country. When public health infrastructure touches down in Atlanta, it touches the culture directly.

And if you remember 2014, you remember how Ebola fear played out in Black and African communities specifically. Stigma. Discrimination against West African immigrants and their children in schools. Misinformation spreading faster than any virus. The CDC is headquartered in Atlanta, which means the city sits at the intersection of outbreak response and community impact in a way no other American city does.

This is also a policy test. The federal government’s ability to screen effectively without profiling, to inform without alarming, and to protect without stigmatizing will define how communities of color experience this response. That balance matters enormously.

The Bigger Picture

Ebola’s case fatality rate can exceed 50%, according to the World Health Organization. This is not COVID-level transmissibility, but it is significantly more lethal. The screening expansion signals that federal health officials see enough risk to act publicly, which is worth paying attention to.

Drake has never been one to do things small. But even by his standards, the simultaneous release of three studio albums on May 15 feels like a flex designed to rewrite the record books. And that is exactly what is happening.

“ICEMAN,” “MAID OF HONOUR,” and “HABIBTI” dropped through OVO Sound and Republic Records, and the numbers landed like a cultural earthquake. In the UK, Drake became the first artist in history to simultaneously debut three studio albums in the top 10 on the UK Albums Chart, with “ICEMAN” at No. 1, “MAID OF HONOUR” at No. 6, and “HABIBTI” at No. 7, according to The Source.

The U.S. Picture Looks Even Bigger

Industry projections suggest Drake is about to do something unprecedented on the Billboard 200. “ICEMAN” is tracking at roughly 460,000 equivalent album units for a No. 1 debut. “HABIBTI” is projected at No. 2 with 114,100 units, and “MAID OF HONOUR” at No. 3 with 109,100 units. If those numbers hold, Drake would become the first artist ever to simultaneously debut at positions one, two, and three on the Billboard 200.

“ICEMAN” alone racked up 450 million Spotify streams in its opening week, a staggering figure that underscores Drake’s dominance across streaming platforms.

Why This Matters

There is a tendency to reduce Drake’s success to pure commercial machinery. But here is what gets lost in the chart talk: this kind of dominance shapes the economics of the entire genre. When Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys walk through a museum, they are not just looking at art. They are checking on a legacy they built together, one canvas at a time.

Their touring exhibition, “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys,” has landed at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) in La Jolla. The show features works from Mickalene Thomas, Titus Kaphar, Nick Cave, Arthur Jafa, and Barkley L. Hendricks, among others. Since debuting at the Brooklyn Museum in 2024, the exhibition has traveled through Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Richmond, drawing over 500,000 visitors along the way.

“We designed Giants for it to feel like people are walking into our home,” Swizz Beatz told Essence. That line alone tells you everything about what separates this from your average museum installation. This is not a velvet rope experience. It is an invitation.

Why This Matters

Hip-hop has always been an art movement. From graffiti to fashion to album covers that defined generations, the culture has shaped visual art as much as it shaped music. But the collector side of that equation rarely gets this kind of spotlight. Swizz and Keys are not just buying art for status. They are building a collection rooted in Black and Brown artists, then putting it on the road so communities who rarely see themselves in museums can walk in and feel ownership.

“They’re supposed to be here,” Keys said during her visit, according to Essence. She was talking about the artists on the walls. She could just as easily have been talking about the families, the students, and the young people walking through the galleries in La Jolla.

The San Diego stop also features a companion exhibition called “Hometown Heroes,” which spotlights local San Diego artists exploring themes of gentrification, activism, and community pride. The question is not whether government should be involved in the economy. It always has been. The question is: who benefits when it does? When government intervention means contracts flowing to connected insiders while our communities still lack basic investment, that is not populism. That is the same old game with a new name.

The Real Conversation We Need

Both parties use government power to shape economic outcomes. The difference is transparency and who gets served. As voters and citizens, we need to stop letting politicians hide behind labels like “free market” or “socialism” when the reality is simpler: follow the money, follow the power, and ask who is actually eating.

The enhanced premium subsidies, first introduced through the American Rescue Plan in 2021, eliminated the income cap that previously cut people off from help at 400% of the federal poverty level. The One Big Beautiful Bill let them expire without replacement.

The bill demands 80 hours per month of work, school, or community service for able-bodied adults. That sounds reasonable on paper until you factor in documentation burdens, irregular shift work, and caregiving responsibilities that disproportionately fall on Black women.

The Bigger Picture

This is not just a policy tweak. It is a structural rollback of healthcare access during a period when medical costs are rising and employer-sponsored coverage is shrinking. Free clinics are reporting surges in patients. People are downgrading to bare-bones Bronze plans that cover almost nothing until you hit a massive deductible. Others are going without entirely.

The irony is thick: the same Congress that branded this the “One Big Beautiful Bill” is producing outcomes that are neither big nor beautiful for the 20 million Americans still relying on subsidies to see a doctor.

Check your state’s open enrollment deadlines and special enrollment periods. If you lost subsidies, you may qualify for Medicaid depending on your state. Contact your representative and demand subsidy restoration be part of any reconciliation package. Healthcare is not a luxury. Trump’s electoral strategy is the political equivalent of what the culture has always fought: systems that punish you for showing up.

When Killer Mike said “plot, plan, strategize, organize, and mobilize” on “RTJ4,” he was not just making music. He was issuing a counter-strategy for exactly this moment.

For decades, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has been one of the most recognizable names in the fight against hate. From tracking the KKK to exposing neo-Nazi networks, the organization built its reputation by going where most people would never dare. Now, the Trump administration’s Department of Justice wants to turn that work into a criminal case.

What Happened

On April 21, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced a federal indictment charging the SPLC with wire fraud and bank fraud. The charges center on the organization’s decades-old informant program, which paid people to infiltrate extremist groups and gather intelligence. According to the DOJ, SPLC failed to disclose the use of donor funds for these payments in its fundraising materials, constituting a “scheme to defraud.”

The SPLC pleaded not guilty on Thursday.

The informant program, active from the 1980s until FBI Director Kash Patel shut down the bureau’s ties with SPLC in October 2025, produced real results. SPLC provided the FBI with a 47-page dossier before the deadly 2017 Charlottesville rally, identifying extremists by name, association, and criminal history. The program helped thwart a 2019 terrorist plot targeting a Las Vegas synagogue and a gay bar. It led to the arrest of a white supremacist seeking security clearance at the Navy Yard.

None of that is in dispute. Even Blanche admitted on Fox News that SPLC “selectively shared information with law enforcement” for years, contradicting his own press conference claim that the program produced nothing useful.

The Legal Theory (and Why It’s Shaky)

The DOJ argues SPLC had a duty to tell donors exactly how their money was being spent, including on informant payments totaling roughly $3 million between 2014 and 2023. Legal analysts at Lawfare have called the theory deeply flawed. No statute, regulation, or fiduciary obligation requires nonprofits to itemize operational expenses in mission statements. Imposing that standard could violate First Amendment protections that courts have long extended to charitable organizations.

The bank fraud charges are similarly thin. SPLC opened accounts under assumed business names to protect informant identities. The DOJ frames this as deception, but the accounts were controlled by disclosed SPLC personnel. Security, not fraud, was the purpose.

Why This Matters

This is bigger than one organization. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called SPLC a “criminal organization.” That language is deliberate. It frames civil rights advocacy itself as suspect.

Groups like Independent Sector warn this case creates a chilling effect across the entire nonprofit sector. If the government can criminalize how an organization talks about its mission, every advocacy group, every community organization, every voter registration drive becomes vulnerable to politically motivated prosecution.

For Black communities, the stakes are even more direct. The SPLC’s work tracking white supremacist groups has been a lifeline for communities targeted by racial violence. Dismantling that infrastructure does not make hate groups disappear. It just means nobody is watching them.

For the second straight month, artificial intelligence has topped the list of reasons U.S. companies are eliminating jobs. And if you’re a Black worker in America right now, that should feel like a five-alarm fire.

According to a report released Thursday by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, U.S. employers announced 83,387 job cuts in April, a 38 percent jump from March. Of those, 21,490 layoffs (26 percent) cited AI as the primary reason, making it the single largest driver of workforce reductions for the second consecutive month.

Year-to-date, nearly 49,135 jobs have been eliminated with AI listed as the cause, representing 16 percent of all 2026 layoffs, up from 13 percent through March (Challenger, Gray & Christmas).

The Tech Sector Is Ground Zero

The technology industry absorbed the heaviest blow, shedding 33,361 positions in April alone and 85,411 year-to-date, a 33 percent increase over the same period in 2025 (Challenger, Gray & Christmas). These aren’t hypothetical projections anymore. Companies are actively replacing human roles with AI systems and telling the public exactly why.

Why This Matters for Black Communities

Here’s where the alarm gets louder. Black unemployment already sits at 7.3 percent, nearly double the national rate of 4.3 percent, according to April 2026 Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Black women are getting hit especially hard, absorbing 33 percent of roughly 300,000 federal job cuts in 2025 despite representing a far smaller share of the federal workforce (Economic Policy Institute).

Now layer AI-driven layoffs on top of that. Black workers are overrepresented in administrative, customer service, and operational support roles, exactly the categories AI is automating fastest. When companies say “we’re restructuring around AI,” the people who lose their chairs first are rarely in the C-suite. They’re the coordinators, the processors, the support staff. Disproportionately, they’re us.

Federal employment, historically one of the most reliable pathways to Black middle-class stability, has already shrunk by 342,000 positions since January 2025 (The Grio). The private sector was supposed to be the backup plan. Instead, it’s accelerating the same displacement through automation.

What Needs to Happen

This isn’t an argument against AI. It’s an argument for intentional transition. If companies are saving billions by replacing workers with algorithms, some of that savings needs to fund retraining, severance, and bridge programs, particularly for the communities absorbing the most damage.

Policy conversations around AI regulation can’t happen without workforce equity at the table. Black workers, labor advocates, and community organizations need seats in those rooms, not just tech executives and lobbyists.

The takeaway: AI isn’t coming for jobs. It’s already here, and it’s been here. The question is whether anyone is building a safety net before the floor disappears, or whether Black communities will be expected to figure it out alone. Again.

In an era where streaming numbers can make or break an artist’s perceived dominance, Top Dawg Entertainment president Terrence “Punch” Henderson Jr. is drawing a line in the sand. Appearing on The Joe Budden Podcast this week, Punch addressed head-on the persistent allegations that TDE has used bots to inflate numbers for its roster, including Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and Doechii.

“We don’t bot. Absolutely not. I’ve never purchased bots,” Punch stated flatly, according to Billboard.

Where the Allegations Come From

The botting accusations gained traction during and after Kendrick Lamar’s high-profile lyrical war with Drake, when streaming numbers and social media engagement became scorecards in the court of public opinion. Some fans and commentators questioned whether TDE artificially boosted metrics to tilt the perception of who was “winning” the battle.

Punch didn’t dodge the broader reality. He acknowledged that botting has existed in the music industry since the MySpace era, with labels running up fake followers and listens for years. But he drew a clear distinction between the industry’s habits and TDE’s philosophy.

The TDE Philosophy: Real Fans, Real Rooms

“Our whole thing was, if we do that, how are we going to know who the actual fan is?” Punch explained. “We’d do a show, don’t nobody show up, ’cause it was all fake. So we purposely chose not to do that.”

That logic cuts to the core of what makes TDE different. The label built its reputation on grassroots fan development, from Kendrick’s Section.80 era through SZA’s evolution into a global superstar. Punch positioned live attendance as the only metric that can’t be faked.

“We’ve never been based on actual numbers. Our true metric is seeing people in them seats at the show,” he said.

He also claimed he wouldn’t even know the logistics of buying bots, saying he has no idea “where to get them” or “how much they cost.” While conceding that bot usage could theoretically help in head-to-head streaming battles, he maintained TDE has never gone that route.

Why This Matters

This conversation is bigger than TDE. The music industry’s relationship with artificial engagement is one of the most underexamined issues in hip-hop. When streaming platforms use play counts to determine chart positions, playlist placements, and revenue distribution, fake numbers aren’t just vanity. They’re economic manipulation.

Punch also denied a separate rumor that TDE paid Joe Budden to publicly support Kendrick during the Drake beef, a claim Budden himself rejected.

For a culture that has always valued authenticity, the bot question is really an integrity question. And Punch’s answer, that real success shows up in packed venues and genuine fan connection, is the kind of old-school accountability that the streaming era desperately needs.

The takeaway: If your numbers can’t fill a room, they’re just numbers. TDE seems to understand that. The question is whether the rest of the industry does.

A federal judge just scheduled a July 15 trial date for former FBI Director James Comey on criminal charges that he threatened President Trump. The alleged weapon? An Instagram photo of seashells arranged in the pattern “86 47.”

U.S. District Judge Louise Flanagan, overseeing the case in New Bern, North Carolina, also agreed that Comey could skip a Monday court appearance. But nothing about this case should be taken lightly, because the implications stretch far beyond one man’s beach photo.

The Charges

Comey faces a two-count indictment for “knowingly and willfully” communicating a threat against Trump. Prosecutors in Trump’s Justice Department, led by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, argue that “86” is slang for “get rid of” or “kill,” and “47” refers to Trump as the 47th president. Comey says he found the shell arrangement on a beach, interpreted it as a political statement (not a violent one), and removed the post once people started reading it differently.

This is actually Comey’s second prosecution under Trump’s DOJ. The first case, a false statement charge, was thrown out after a judge ruled the prosecutor was illegally appointed.

Why This Matters

Let’s be clear about the pattern here. The same Justice Department that is supposed to serve the people is being used to pursue political opponents. Comey is not the only one. From civil rights leaders to outspoken artists, history shows us what happens when the law becomes a tool of personal revenge instead of public safety.

Legal experts have serious doubts this case holds up. The Supreme Court set a high bar for “true threats” in cases like Virginia v. Black (2003) and Watts v. United States (1969). Proving that a photo of seashells on a beach constitutes a knowing, willful threat is a legal stretch that most constitutional scholars find absurd.

But the conviction might not be the point. The process is the punishment. The indictment alone forces Comey into a courtroom in eastern North Carolina, drains resources, and sends a message to every critic with a platform: speak up and we will come for you.

The Hip-Hop Connection

Hip-hop has always understood this dynamic. From the FBI’s letter to N.W.A. over “Straight Outta Compton” to the surveillance of activists during the Black Lives Matter movement, using federal power to silence dissent is not new. The only thing that changes is the target. Today it is a former FBI director who fell out of favor. Tomorrow it could be anyone who posts something the administration does not like.

When Ice Cube rapped about institutional intimidation, it was not hypothetical. This is what it looks like in 2026, except the threat is not a lyric. It is seashells on a beach.

Thirty-one years after he stepped out of Nas’s shadow with one of the greatest debut albums in hip-hop history, AZ has done something few rappers even attempt. He finished what he started.

“Doe Or Die III” dropped today (May 8) via Mass Appeal Records, closing out a trilogy that began in 1995 when a young Anthony Cruz from Brooklyn turned street cinema into lyrical architecture. The final installment is now available on all streaming platforms, and it arrives with the weight of three decades of credibility behind it.

The Legacy That Built This Moment

For the uninitiated, AZ’s story starts with 16 bars. His verse on Nas’s “Life’s a Bitch” from the 1994 classic “Illmatic” remains one of the most celebrated guest appearances in rap history. Many argued he outshined Nas on his own album. That performance earned him a deal with EMI Records, and in October 1995, “Doe Or Die” arrived.

The debut went platinum, topped the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and gave us “Sugar Hill.” It bridged the raw poetry of “Illmatic” with the cinematic mafioso storytelling that would define an entire subgenre of East Coast rap. A new Politico poll shows 52 percent of Americans support requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote. On the surface, that sounds like common sense. Dig deeper, and it starts to look a lot like the latest chapter in a long playbook designed to shrink the electorate, not protect it.

What the Poll Actually Says

The survey, published May 7, found that 52 percent of respondents either “strongly support” or “support” requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, including when registering by mail. Seventeen percent were opposed. The rest were unsure or had no opinion, according to Politico.

The poll lands as President Trump pushes the SAVE America Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act) through Congress. The bill would require documents like a birth certificate or passport to register, mandate states to purge non-citizens from voter rolls, and largely eliminate mail-in voting. Trump has framed the legislation in apocalyptic terms, saying “we are either going to fix [elections], or we won’t have a Country any longer,” per Politico reporting.

The Gap Between the Question and the Impact

Here is what the poll does not measure: who gets left behind. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, roughly 11 percent of U.S. citizens lack a government-issued photo ID. That number jumps to 25 percent among Black citizens of voting age. Birth certificates, passports, and naturalization papers are not free, and they are not equally accessible.

Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) has warned the SAVE Act could disenfranchise “hundreds of thousands, if not millions” of eligible voters. Civil rights organizations have echoed that concern, pointing out that communities of color, low-income voters, elderly citizens, and rural populations are the most likely to lack the specific documents this legislation demands.

A separate Berkeley IGS poll from April 2026 revealed something telling about a similar California voter ID measure. When described neutrally, 56 percent supported it. When linked to its Trump-aligned backers, support dropped to 39 percent. The framing matters as much as the policy.

Why This Matters to the Culture

Hip-hop has always understood that access is power. From voter registration drives at concerts to artists like Killer Mike pushing civic engagement in Atlanta, the culture has spent decades fighting to get people TO the polls. Laws that add barriers to registration move in the opposite direction.

The SAVE Act does not just ask for ID at the polling place. It targets registration itself, the front door. And by gutting mail-in voting on top of that, it narrows the path for working people, hourly workers, single parents, and anyone who cannot take a Tuesday off to stand in line.

Non-citizen voting is already illegal under federal law. Exposed cases remain statistically negligible. The question is not whether we should prevent fraud. The question is whether the “solution” causes more harm than the problem it claims to fix.

The Takeaway

Polls can tell you what people support in theory. They rarely capture who gets hurt in practice. If the SAVE America Act becomes law, its impact will not land equally. It never does. Pay attention to who is writing these bills, who benefits from smaller voter rolls, and who loses their voice. Then ask yourself: is this about election security, or election control?

Kodak Black is back behind bars. The 28-year-old rapper, born Bill Kapri, was booked into the Orange County Corrections Department on Wednesday after surrendering to authorities on a felony charge of trafficking MDMA, according to jail records and multiple reports.

He is being held without bond and faces a first-degree felony under Florida law, which carries a mandatory minimum three-year prison sentence and a $50,000 fine for trafficking 10 grams or more of MDMA.

What Led to the Arrest

The charge stems from a November 2025 incident outside the Children’s Safety Village, a nonprofit in Orlando. According to a five-page affidavit reported by Geo News, Orlando police responded to reports of gunshots at the location and found a BMW and a Lamborghini parked outside.

After detecting the smell of marijuana, officers searched both vehicles. Drugs were found in one car. In the other, police discovered two bags next to a passenger, one containing Kodak’s ID card and a bottle of prescription cough syrup, according to Power 105.1. The bottle was later tested and allegedly matched Kodak’s fingerprints.

Critically, Kodak was not inside either vehicle when the search took place. He was reportedly in the area with the people driving the cars.

His Attorney Says the Case Is Weak

Attorney Bradford Cohen told TMZ that Kodak voluntarily surrendered after learning police planned to arrest him. Cohen called the trafficking charge’s legal basis “weak,” arguing that touching a bottle is not the same as possessing it, especially when his client was never in the vehicle where it was found.

“It’s not illegal to touch it,” Cohen said, signaling he plans to aggressively fight the charge. Kodak reportedly plans to bail out before the weekend.

A Pattern That Keeps Repeating

This is far from Kodak’s first encounter with the criminal justice system. In 2025 alone, he faced charges for trafficking oxycodone and possessing a controlled substance without a prescription. His rap sheet stretches back years, including weapons charges that led to a federal prison sentence and a controversial pardon from former President Donald Trump in January 2021.

Each arrest raises the same uncomfortable question: is the system disproportionately targeting a young Black artist, or is a talented rapper failing to distance himself from circumstances that keep putting him in legal jeopardy?

Why This Matters

Florida’s drug trafficking laws are among the harshest in the nation. A mandatory minimum of three years means a conviction leaves almost no room for judicial discretion. For Kodak, who has already served federal time, another conviction could effectively end the most productive years of his career.

The hip-hop community has watched this cycle play out with too many artists. Talent alone does not shield anyone from a system designed to impose maximum consequences. Whether Cohen’s defense holds up or not, this case is another reminder that proximity to trouble carries real weight in courtrooms, especially in Florida, and especially if your name is already in the system.

While the 2021 blockbuster Mortal Kombat movie laid the groundwork for the current series of movies directed by director and producer Simon McQuoid, the new movie dives headfirst into the actual source material of the iconic franchise. Such as the actual tournament itself and truly succeeds by focusing on the insane action sequences, storied rivalries, alliances and the looming threat that defines the actual Mortal Kombat tournament as the champions of Earthrealm try to defend the Earth from the rule of the iconic villain, Shao Kahn.  Who we are introduced to at the beginning of the film and get his back story in the realm of the proud civilization of Edenia he is fighting to take over. Showing no mercy whatsoever Shao Kahn shows from the very opening of the movie why he’s so feared and menacing.  Really establishing why the audience from the very beginning of the journey of the movie is mostly set to hate and truly despise his character, who is so brilliantly played in such an ego-driven, over the top and larger-than-life way by Martyn Ford.  Letting us know from the very beginning of the movie the larger-than-life and gory no-holds barred, high-stakes action set to really ensue for much of the rest of the movie. 

That plot central to another key and iconic Mortal Kombat character we are also introduced to again for the movie in Johnny Cage. Who we are first introduced to as a B-movie action star from the 90’s that we all grew up on and can relate to in a lot of ways with his humor and charisma. That we are all in a lot of ways nostalgic and craving for, like so many other great things from the 90’s. Karl Urban, who plays the iconic Cage really takes on the role with very charming charisma and his just at the right times humor that makes him such an iconic character in the just as iconic gaming franchise. Urban really becomes Cage and makes you feel you are actually playing the game while watching his very standout performance in Mortal Kombat II.  That is by far one of the most standout performances of the several standout performances in the movie.  With all the ups and downs he goes in his journey throughout the movie. Another iconic Mortal Kombat character we are introduced to in this movie that wasn’t in the first film, Kitana, who is so strongly played with such strength, grace and poise by Adeline Rudolph.  Is another character that we really go on a real journey with throughout the movie in how her character develops and grows from an eight-year-old who sees her father die at the hands of Shao Khan to a princess raised by Khan, who she is secretly seeking revenge against to one day eventually avenge her father.  Adeline’s truly standout performance in really becoming and making you feel like she is Kitana is truly one of the things that along with Urban’s performance as Cage is truly at the heart and emotional depth of the film. Which especially even more so connects you even more to these two new iconic characters that we didn’t have in the first 2021 Mortal Kombat blockbuster movie this is a sequel to.

Jessica McNamee as the iconic Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, and Ludi Lan as Liu Kang, as well as Lewis Tan as Cole Young and Tadanobu Assano as the iconic Lord Raiden.  Plus Joe Taslim returning as the now dead and restored assassin Bi-Han, who was the iconic Sub-Zero prior to being killed in the first film by the just as iconic Hanzo Hasashi aka Scorpion.  The just as iconic and legendary Hiroyuki Sanada once again returning to play both Hanzo and Scorpion that is one of several key characters from the first film to once again return in this very high-stakes sequel. That once again finds the vengeful Scorpion and Bi-Han once again colliding on course with one another.  This time in the Netherrealm for what is sure to be another memorable fight remembered in Mortal Kombat and even movies history for decades to come!

The action and fighting with the brutally stellar fight choreography, more sharper and gory bloody as hell and insanely entertaining fight sequences is by far one of the movies biggest triumphs that they truly improved on from the first film as well. That shows how much McQuoid and the producers took on things they could improve on from the first film. Which longtime Mortal Kombat fans suggested changing and will be truly satisfied with seeing as they get more of the iconic moves and distinct styles that stay true to the characters origins. Such as Kitana with her iconic fan with knives in it to Cage with his cocky and over the top charisma and charm, as well as just right at times humor so many of us can relate to. As well as Jade with her stellar martial arts bo and Kung Lao with his trademark razor-brimmed hat he uses as a weapon.

Overall, Mortal Kombat II, is a real fan-driven, action-packed and truly entertaining experience that is filled with a lot of heart and even shocking at times more hilarious than you would think humor. That truly stays true to the source of the over-the-top and larger-than-life action, fighting, fantasy and world building-material in a way it has never been done before. Which truly makes this high-stakes sequel standout as by far one of the best video game movies ever adapted to film. That you really need to experience on the biggest screen possible along with an audience for the full on cinematic larger-than-life high-stakes entertaining event that it is. Whether that is IMAX or the XL at AMC experience that me, my 19-year-old nephew and the other critics and moviegoers experienced for the early critics regional screening I attended at AMC Newcity here in Chicago on May 4th.  That loud, bold and gory, campy fun entertainment, will have you really entertained by all the mindless over-the-top action and even have you laughing at certain instances of the more hilarious than you would think, just right humor. Like it did for us and the crowd of moviegoers we saw it with and will really make you want to see the movie in theaters multiple times if you can.

When Vivica A. Fox and Erika Alexander show up in a film, they bring decades of cultural weight with them. In Aleshea Harris’ upcoming revenge thriller Is God Is, both veterans are doing something different: anchoring a story that centers Black women’s rage, survival, and divine authority in ways Hollywood rarely allows.

The Film That Flips the Script

Is God Is follows two sisters (played by Kara Young and Mallori Johnson) on an epic quest for revenge after a brutal burning, confronting a charged family history that pushes them to extraordinary lengths. The film is based on Harris’ award-winning 2018 play of the same name and marks her feature directorial debut. It hits theaters May 15 via Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures.

Fox plays Ruby the God, the mother figure who sets the sisters’ mission in motion. Alexander plays Divine The Healer, a woman whose presence suggests restoration exists even inside destruction. Both roles move far beyond the “supportive elder” archetype that Hollywood typically reserves for Black women of their stature.

A Director Who Refuses to Be Small

Aleshea Harris has described the film’s world as “three clicks to the left of center,” blending Southern Gothic, Western, dark comedy, and Greek tragedy into something entirely its own. The result draws comparisons to Kill Bill while remaining rooted in Black cultural specificity. Harris told TheGrio that the film’s core message is simple: “Black women and girls are to be loved and taken seriously. That’s it. Period.”

The production team reinforces that vision. Tessa Thompson produces alongside Kishori Rajan, Riva Marker, and Janicza Bravo (director of Zola). The score comes from Joseph Shirley (Creed III, The Mandalorian) and singer-songwriter Moses Sumney. The cast rounds out with Janelle Monáe as the New Wife, Sterling K. Brown as the Monster, and Mykelti Williamson as a lawyer named Chuck Hall.

Why This Matters

This is a Black woman writing, directing, and producing a revenge film where Black women are the architects of their own justice. Fox and Alexander aren’t here as decoration. They’re playing characters with mythological weight: a god and a healer. That casting choice is a statement about whose stories get told with that level of gravity.

The film also represents a pipeline moment. Harris’ play won the Relentless Award in 2016 and an Obie in 2019. The fact that it took nearly a decade to reach the screen (the project was originally set up at A24 with Scott Rudin before finding its current home) tells you everything about how slowly Hollywood moves on Black women’s visions, even acclaimed ones.

Is God Is opens May 15. If it delivers on the promise of its cast and creative team, it could mark one of the most significant directorial debuts of 2026. Support it opening weekend. These are the films that prove the audience exists.

Stacey Abrams brought her voting rights fight to Nashville on Wednesday, testifying before the Tennessee Senate Judiciary Committee against a proposed congressional map designed to carve up the state’s only majority-Black district.

The target is Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District, a Memphis-based seat held by Rep. Steve Cohen since 2007. The district is roughly 60% Black, reliably Democratic by a 30-point margin, and the lone blue dot in Tennessee’s congressional delegation. Republican lawmakers want to crack it open, splitting Memphis voters across multiple districts to dilute their power and potentially flip the seat red.

What the Map Does

The proposed redistricting plan disperses Memphis-area Black and Democratic voters into surrounding conservative districts. Instead of one concentrated community with clear representation, the map scatters that voting bloc across rural and suburban territory where their voices get drowned out. It is textbook cracking, one of the oldest tricks in the gerrymandering playbook.

Republicans frame it as routine population balancing after the 2020 census. Critics (including Abrams, Cohen, and protesters outside the hearing) call it what it looks like: racial gerrymandering that violates the Voting Rights Act.

Why Abrams Was There

Abrams served six terms in the Georgia House, including seven years as minority leader. She built her national profile fighting voter suppression and gerrymandering in her own state. Her testimony framed the Tennessee map as “predatory redistricting” targeting Black political power, the same playbook she has fought in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana.

Rep. Cohen testified alongside her, fielding questions from the committee about the direct impact on his constituents.

Why This Matters to the Culture

Memphis is Three 6 Mafia, Al Green, the Stax Records legacy, and a civil rights history written in blood (Dr. King was assassinated there).
