Happy end to the work week, friends!! What are your plans for the fast approaching weekend?! The {His} and I are excited to have a few fun things to look forward to ~ a double ice skating date at the outdoor rink near Wrigley Field, dining after at Uncommon Ground, a Saturday free for our choosing, and then rounding it all out on Sunday with a shop around Dose Market with a dear friend. We're looking forward to it all. Here's to a fabulous weekend and just {five} of the little things we enjoyed this past week...

I've been trying to wear pants more frequently this season. In the winter, I tend to be a skirts and tights type girl, so I'm doing my best to switch it up a bit and embrace the benefits of pantaloons. I find I shy away from them only because at first sight they seem less feminine, but add a girly top and dainty details and voila!! It's instantly all the feminine I need.

Despite the cold, we're still shopping for the sun!! Last week it was swimwear and this week it's footwear... Sperry Top-Siders to be specific. We love a boat shoe for casual, warm-weather living and Sperry consistently puts them out in spades. The high blue skies and beautifully mild temps we were so blessed with on Sunday swiftly returned to the season's chill by Monday morning. It certainly wasn't a huge surprise or even a disappointment. With only a couple weeks between us and the beach, a bit of icy chill only makes our impending trip that much sweeter. Until then, layers still reign supreme.

I'm prematurely excited about swimwear this season, which is both a good and a bad thing. Good because I'll also be prematurely enjoying some summer-like sun with our upcoming trip to Mexico. Bad because there's still many, many weeks of winter-like weather to come in Chicago. And while I love layering up looks like the one below, I have to admit I'm really looking forward to shedding a few of them for a short while. Spending a handful of days beach-side with little more than a swimming costume and a book sounds incredible right about now.

We're headed for a Mexican retreat in just a few short weeks... and it goes without saying that we're incredibly excited for a warm getaway!! With the dead of winter upon us, there's really no better time than the present to escape to the sun and surf. We can't help daydreaming of the warming sun, white sand beaches, and crisp blue sea that awaits...

Shades of black and grey certainly aren't surprising color combos this time of year, but there's something so timeless and classic about them that consistently has us coming back for more. They're two colors the {His} certainly couldn't live without and become strong wardrobe staples as the temperatures turn cold. I always find the dark shades so striking against the blinding white of snow. My man in black among a blanket of white.

Hers - A Spot of Dots

Earlier this week, I had an itch to sport a spot of dots. The classic whimsy of the pattern just seemed like the perfect remedy for a cold, grey day. So I pulled a long spotty scarf out of hiding and added it to the neck of a crisp white shirt. My favorite way to add a punch of pattern and a girly necktie to a basic button down. It's not the first time I've worn this particular silky number at the neck. You can see another version of this look {here}.

Asos, one of my favorite online retailers, recently shared a handful of top trends for Spring/Summer 2012. I instantly fell in love with the collages they created out of runway shots, as well as many of the trends they highlighted. Everything from sweetie, sweet pastels to bright, bold patterns will be in this upcoming season. A solid range of selection. But the one trend I think I'm most excited to start incorporating into my wardrobe... 21st Century Gatsby. A fabulous novel and era of style. Which trend are you most coveting??

This week came to an eventful end with the first real snow of the season. It was exciting and beautiful all in one!! Chicago covered in a silencing glisten and blanket of white. We celebrated by taking a long walk in our snow-globe-of-a-city then dined at a delicious sushi spot. A rather romantic winter date indeed. We've been dreaming of this type of white for weeks now, so were thrilled to add it as one of our favorite things. We hope you've had a wonderful week filled with many favorite things!! There's one item I just can't seem to live without when winter rolls around each year... my jet-black fur vest {case in point, check out this post from the dead of winter nearly two years ago}. It's ultra-soft warmth becomes essential as soon as the temperatures take a dip and it's an item that seems to mix flawlessly with nearly everything in my winter wardrobe. My perfect layering piece for winter warmth indeed.

On January 4th, photographer Eve Arnold passed away ~ just shy of 100 years old. Best known for her candid shots of celebrities, she was one of the first female photojournalists to join the prestigious Magnum Photography Agency in the 1950's. An inspirational lady indeed. Here's just a handful of the beautiful images she immortalized for our everlasting enjoyment...

Since we took a short blogging hiatus over the holidays, this week's {five} favorite things is a bit of mix from the past two weeks. Christmas and New Year's came and went during that short period and they were as family and festive filled as we had hoped they'd be. We're of course sad to see the holidays go, but at the same time excited to see what 2012 has in store. Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house I went this past Christmas holiday... and home I came with yet another amazing find from her ever-stylist closet!! The vintage red & black wool cape pictured below was this trip's treasure and has swiftly become my latest love. I've been cozying up against the cold and snow with this classic cape since it came home to Chicago with me. A big thank you and even bigger hugs go out to my dear, sweet Grandma & Grandpa "D."
