In March, 2012, quite a bit of drama swirled around the quarterback position throughout the NFL, with free-agent signings, ourtight releases, trades, and rumors of trades. The biggest quarterback story of of the 2012 NFL off-season revolved around the fate of future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, who missed the 2011 season with a neck injury. After Manning’s release by the Indianapolis Colts, many teams openly coveted Manning’s talents, and he interviewed with several teams. On March 20, 2012, Peyton Manning signed a five-year deal to quarterback the Denver Broncos. Upon Manning’s signing, and the announcement that he would (obviously), be the starting quarterback, Tim Tebow suddenly became expendable and marketable in the trading circles of the NFL. On March 21, 2012, the Broncos and Jets announced the completion of a trade that sent Tebow to New York. Denver gained the Jets’ 4th and 6th round draft picks for 2012, while Denver also got the Jets’s 7th round draft pick for 2012. New York announced that Tebow would once again be a backup quarterback, with incumbent quarterback Mark Sanchez retaining (for now), his starting job.

Tim Tebow finished the 2011 regular season with a career quarterback rating of 75.1, a rather low number. However, Tebow’s leadership of the Denver Broncos, along with the confusion that the option offense creates for opposing defenses, propelled the Broncos to an AFC West Division Championship and a playoff appearance at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Broncos won the NFL’s first ever non-sudden death overtime playoff game on January 8, 2012. Ironically, the Broncos actually won the game in sudden death mode by scoring on their first possession with an 80-yard Tim Tebow pass to Demaryius Thomas to score the game-winning touchdown. Interestingly, some analysts noted the significance of the number of yards Tim Tebow passed for in this game (316), is the same as his favorite Bible verse (John 3:16).

immediate. Within days of Mike Leach’s hiring by Washington State, the now-famous tradition of flying the Cougar flag on ESPN Gameday took place with an added dimension: A pirate emblem (in homage to pirate-loving Mike Leach), was seen flying in the background of an ESPN Gameday broadcast.

Mike Leach has been hired to coach the football team at Washington State University. Leach replaces the recently fired Paul Wulff, who was ousted after four dismal years of failure. Mike Leach, the former Texas Tech coach with a fondness for pirate lore and legend, led the Raiders to 10 bowl games in 10 seasons, and favors a passing attack. WSU, known in some quarters as Quarterback U., is desparately in need of success. With a new fund-raising campaign coming up to refurbish the aging Martin Stadium, and with declining attenandance and interest in a failing football program, WSU Athletic Director Bill Moos had to show fans and alumni that he was serious about changing WSU’s seeming culture of accepting mediocrity in the football program.

In hiring Mike Leach, a somewhat controversial, but successful coach, WSU gains instant credibility, and perhaps a new marketing bonanza of selling stuffed cougars wearing pirate eye-patches.

Jack Thompson as a potential replacement is interesting in that he would definetely spark interest in WSU Alumni, especially given the campaign to raise funds for the Martin Stadium renovation. The WSU AD, Bill Moos, who is believed to have a penchant for hiring alums. The negatives include Thompson’s lack of college coaching experience.

Los Angeles County Coroner’s office revealed that former all-pro football player turned actor and commercial pitchman Bubba Smith died of acute drug intoxication, along with a heart condition. The autopsy found that Smith, who died at the age of 66, on Aug. 3at his Baldwin Hills home, had phentermine, which is a weight-loss drug, in his system. Coroner’s officials said he also had heart disease and high-blood pressure.

The 66-year-old actor’s heart was abnormally large — nearly twice the weight of a normal heart — and some vessels were blocked as much as 75%, according to the report.

Charles Aaron Smith was born Feb. 28, 1945, in Orange, Texas, and grew up in Beaumont, where his mother was a teacher and his father his high school football coach.

At Michigan State, Smith became an All-American defensive end for the Spartans, who went 19-1-1 his last two seasons. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

The 6-foot-7, 280-pound defensive end was the No. 1 NFL draft pick from Michigan State University when he joined the Baltimore Colts in 1967.He played five seasons for the Colts, which included their upset loss to the New York Jets in Super Bowl III and a victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V.

He spent two seasons with the Oakland Raiders and two more with the Houston Oilers before a knee injury ended his career in 1976.

After football, Smith was recruited to appear in commercials for Miller Lite beer. He and fellow NFL veteran Dick Butkus were cast as inept golfers and polo players in the TV spots.

To replace Hasselbeck, the Seahawks are bringing in Tavaris Jackson and, reportedly, Matt Leinart to compete with Charlie Whitehurst for the starting QB spot.
