I don't find any jokes funny based on subject matter alone. But I certainly think a joke involving AIDS can be funny. To call whole topics "inappropriate" seems to me ridiculous. Much humor is based on personal pain, or is a way of dealing with the harsh realities of life. As Mel Brooks said, "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die." Of course AIDS itself is not funny at all, and there's nothing funny about anyone actually having it. But it wouldn't be funny either if someone you knew actually fell into an open sewer and died. But the above quote is still funny as hell. You can't say you love black humor and be morally opposed to AIDS jokes in general. It's just illogical.

OK, let's be faire. His talk is more fascinating, a lot more fascinating. We just need a breakthrough and it can happen any time.

I am liking this MTV programme about two young HIV positive people, a girl in the US and a guy in Zambia, both discussing their life, love and dreams with HIV. Their experiences echo mine and they are wonderfully articulate, vulnerable and inspiring at the same time.

This is a terrible state of affair that in this day and age I keep coming across 19 and 20 year olds who have got hiv. While I want to tell them that they will be ok, I also want to yell at them "what were you thinking?" but I can't.

The article lists all the reason that can lead to not using condoms and I am impressed at how comprehensive. In my case, I would also add to the list the reason which has caused me to become infected:

Criminal intent: the desire to pass on your deadly virus to unsuspecting victims by sneakily removing condom when fucking.

I suspect there is a lot of that going around, sadly.

I like these stories that are published all the time claiming that we are one step closer to a cure. We have taken so many steps closer to that cure that we must be really close now, let's hope we don't pass one by and leave it behind us. Anyway, this article got my attention because of that "one step closer" statement but I was very disappointed by how vague said step is.

“If we can discover how to make these cells stronger to restore the immune system to its full strength then we are one step closer to finding a cure,” he said.

I am tempted to add my own bit of research:

"If we can discover how to make hiv weaker to prevent new hiv cell production then we are one step closer to finding a cure"

OK I am mocking the platitudes but I will still gratefully accept any cure the guy can discover. Thank you very much.

You’ve had AIDS jokes in your act. That’s a pretty risky subject for comedy, no?
Why? Didn’t you see the documentary? That’s the whole point. Comedy is how you deal with things. If you can laugh at it, you can deal with it.

Did you lose many friends to the AIDS crisis?
A lot, a lot, a lot. I was doing my talk show during part of that, and one day we did a big thing on AIDS. I said, “Let’s put up pictures of my friends who have died.” And it just didn’t stop. I was so upset, because you don’t realize how many you lost until you really start to line it up. It was awful. It was a death sentence back then. When someone called you up and said, “I have AIDS,” it was over. My hairdresser, Jason Dyl, was wild and crazy. The minute he heard about it, he said to me, “That’s the end for me.” And it was. We didn’t know what to do, how to treat it, so he used to put on rubber gloves to do my hair. It was a horrible, black time. Don’t get me started.

It was nice to see Gero Hütter is being honored (full article) for having successfully - and accidentally - cured an American man from HIV. Virus, still gone, three years on.

Gero Hütter is the German physician from Berlin who performed a bone marrow transplant to treat a patient's leukemia and cured both of the patient's conditions. Who knew leukemia (treatment) could have this kind of upside?
