Pythagorean triplets

While lying semi-awake in the morning, reading the first part of Bill Habbard's "Message Contains No Recognisable Symbols", the thoughts drifted to how in a right-angled triangle we have:
$$ a^2 + b^2 = c^2 $$

That led me to:
$$\begin{align}
a^2 &= c^2 - b^2 \\
&= (c + b) \cdot (c - b)
\end{align}$$
Now, we have triplets like $(3, 4, 5)$; $(5, 12, 13)$ etc. where 2 of the values are consecutive. What if we fix $ c - b = 1 $; that is, the hypotenuse and one of the bases. We get to:
$$\begin{align}
a^2 &= (c + b) \cdot 1 \\
&= ((b + 1) + b) \\
&= 2 \cdot b + 1
\end{align}$$
So, if I get any odd perfect square, I can always get its corresponding values to form a co-prime Pythagorean triplet (or a primitive triplet). To test it out, here is a list of first 10 such triplets:

(7, 24, 25) \\
(9, 40, 41) \\
(11, 60, 61) \\

Another interesting thing about these triplets is, the other two sides are the medians for our odd-square values. For eg. first odd-square is $9$. The other two sides will be around $\dfrac{9}{2} = 4.50$, which gives the other 2 sides: $4$ and $5$.

From another such triplet $ (x, y, z) $, you can arrive at the immediate next one as follows: $$ \left(x + 2, y + 2 \cdot (x + 1), z + 2 \cdot (x + 1) \right) $$

Card game: Literature

I was recently introduced to a card name, 'Literature'. The game is really amazing and the rules are pretty simple. One can, of course, find the rules over at Wikipedia, but I'd still like to put them below.

Concept

The game can typically be summarised with 3 rules and 2 conditions. The game's setup is a little different from other games. Each suit is divided into two groups, namely low group and high group. They can also be referred by suffixing the individual suit's name: "high clubs" or "low clubs". What the group actually means is, one card is removed from each suit (generally 7s or 8s) splitting the suit in two groups (A-6 or 2-7 and 8-K or 9-A).

The game is played between 2 teams, with alternate players in the same teams. The number of players should be 4, 6, 8 or 12. The team with highest number of declared groups is the winner.

Conditions

You can demand a card X from the opponent if and only if you have a card Y, belonging to the same group as X, in your hand.
You'll have to give the card to your opponent if they ask for it and you do possess the card.

Rules

In a player's turn, they can ask ANY of opponent for ANY specific card following the conditions as mentioned above. If the opponent does not posses the card, the opponent who was challenged gets the next turn and the player loses their own.
If a player is in possession of the whole group, they can put the whole group on the table and declare it closed. The player's team has won that particular group for the game.
If a player deduces (or guesses) that their team as a whole is in possession of a group, they can decide to declare it so. If the team does actually own the group, they have won that group. On the other hand, if even one card is possessed by the opposing team, the entire group is awarded to the opposing team.

Alteration

A possible alteration of the game (possible with 6 or more players) is that when declaring ownership of a group, the player needs to accurately mention which player of their team has which card. Failing to do so would either result in a penalty (awarding the opposite team with the group) or a loss (the group is discarded entirely from the game).

Another alteration could be introducing two joker cards instead of removing one from each suit, thereby ending in nine groups instead of eight. This will reduce the probability of the game ending in a draw/tie.

Opera Next 15: Chromium implemented

It has been a long time since my last blog entry. I could find nothing to write about (or maybe think about). Now, that Opera has finally incorporated Web-kit (that is; in simple terms; engine being used Chrome) and are probably moving to be open source, I definitely found something.

It was released publicly on Opera Blogs by the team about the release of Opera Next 15. I was shocked to notice the largest file size of Opera's installer with a size increasing 20 MB (24 MB, tbh). While normally these are kept generally below 15 MB for international release.

After a busy Winter here in the Desktop department at Opera we are finally ready to lift the covers of the latest preview of the next generation of our Web browsers. Today we are releasing Opera Next 15 for Windows and Mac.

Though a Linux release is not yet out, it has been mentioned in comments that "We’re not releasing a Linux version today. It is an important market for us, and we are still working on it."

Thank you Opera team for this new UI and other changes in your release. This release is based on Chromium/Blink. So far, I have liked what I noticed in the browser. The UserAgent string for this browser is:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/28.0.1500.20 Safari/537.36 OPR/15.0.1147.18 (Edition Next)

Along with that, here is a concise list of features I noticed:

And that is about it. I couldn't find a single feature change that I could either care about or comprehend. But, on the other hand, since it is just the "FIRST" release with these changes, Opera is sure to implement many of the features. The list of unavailable features is quite long but the most important to me amongst them include:

Panels (Press F4 in older Opera browsers if you are unaware of what they are) - This includes chat client, contact manager, mail client, notes etc.
RSS Feeds parser (No, XML parser just doesn't cut it for me)

Search engine management
Closed tab list in the title bar
Option to add Status bar/View bar
Sessions Manager

The above list is just what I'd like back in beta release of Opera. All the very best Opera team. Thanks a lot for the awesome user experiences as always. At the end, I'd just quote a comment from the aforementioned blog post.

If I wanted an UI for idiots I would use an browser with such UI! I've installed OperaNext and... well, I see chrome... and simply cant use it!

Chat Logging bot for DC++

First Things First

I don't know it the bot will work with any other hub software or protocol other than YnHub (which uses NMDC protocol).
The bot has been tested only in DCDM++ v 0.401, and it is still working fine on a system with 768 MB RAM and a crappy processor.

Functions of Bot:

Able to log the complete main-chat, upto the maximum length of 800 characters each line.
Stores the chat log in files names as <day>_<month>_<year>.txt format.
The storing and opening is set in dcpp Listener, so the file get created automatically when the system time beomes 00:00 hours.
There is a user score generator and top chatters facility available.

Required:

DCDM++ client. (Preferably 0.041)
A working hub (to test, or log on).
Folders made in the following manners: "<year>\<month>". I have it prepared for 12 years.
A file named "ChatLogHelp.txt" with following data inside it:

Dexter Appears in Powerpuff Girls

The animation director of the series "The Powerpuff Girls" was Genndy Tartakovsky; who is also credited for Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack. So; it was by chance or by-his-will that he put Dexter in the Pokey-Oaks Kindergaten school near Townsville. ;)

Adobe Photoshop Flare Effects

We all know about the powers which Adobe Photoshop possesses within itself. With newer and newer effects and properties being added to play around with; there is something named Flare Effect in it. Flare is something you notice in a picture taken with an intense source of light in the background. It gives a shine to metal objects; eyes etc. in the picture. This effect can be easily inserted into any image anywhere now. Here's how:

Open file

First of all; open the image you want to add flare effects to in Adobe Photoshop. I am using Adobe Photoshop CS5 for this tutorial. The file used for the same has been already colored by me and was drawn by my friend "Tarun".

Unlocking Base Background layer

Next; either unlock the base background layer; or duplicate it. I would recommend unlocking it. Just double click on the lock icon in the layers panel.

Unlocking Layers

After you double click on the lock; you'll be presented by the screen shown here. I am naming this layer now as 'girl'. You may name it anything you want. The names do not affect the final result.

Multiply Mode

After the above step, change the mode property in the same window to 'Multiply'.

Creating New Layer

Now, create a new layer just above the layer 'girl' and simultaneously press "Shit + BKSP" to open up a new window shown and told about in next step.

Fill Layer with Color

Here you may change the properties of the layers. Hence, chose Color in the Use property. This is to fill the whole layer with uniform color.

Chose Color

A color picking window shall be presented to you. Also; the mouse cursor changes to color picker when you move around anywhere(even outside of Photoshop Window) to chose color. Here I shall be using pure Black color.

Adding Lens Flare

After choosing color, you will see the screen as shown here. The Lens Flare is an inbuilt effect in Adobe Photoshop; and you'll find it in Filter > Render > Lens Flare... Click and chose this filter to be applied on newly created layer.

Change to Screen Mode

Set the screen mode for this layer as "Screen" for the flare to look natural(which it isn't). This can be done as shown in this adjoining image.

Chose Move Tool

Move Flare to desired position

The change in layer modes effects the view of the image. As you will notice; now the flare can be seen effectively on the layer 'girl'. Now we only have to set it at some position of our choice. This is achieved by the 'Move Tool'. After setting the flare to the desired position; we may stop and work on other effects.

After achieving the required position and effect; I applied a similar flare to the girl's right eye. And the final result is as depicted below.

Browsers - Always at war?

The browser war has always continued and probably will always be in action.

The most important fact giving rise to the same is "the difference in browsing speeds". Almost all the browsers clain to be the fastest browser ever on Earth; which can of course be never true. So, to look into the matter; and to cut the long talks to short; I tested the brwsing speeds of 3 different free-browsers, which I prefer, namely: Opera, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

The results are solely based on the speed tests by the website http://www.speedtest.net; I have to say no more. Watch the video for the speed test results.

PAL - Sunidhi Chauhan Live Concert

As I mentioned in my previous blog-post that Sunidhi Chauhan's live concert was preplanned on 23^rd January, 2011.

Sunidhi Chauhan: She is credited with over 2000 songs and rose to fame with her first film Shastra. She has now become a household name after her latest numbers Sheila ki Jawani, Beedi Jalaile and Dhoom Machale. Surely a night you wouldn’t want to miss.

She rocked not only the students in Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur; but the whole of the city of Kharagpur and nearby one too. The night will be unforgettable for all of the people who did attend the concert. And those who had the opportunity will be repenting for most of their life.

Spring Fest is IIT Kgp's(Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur). It is held annually in the month of January. This year in 2011, it has been organised from 21^st January to 24^th January. All these 3 days and 4 nights will be like no other day before in my life. The starting of the event took place with a Hasya Kavi Sammelan on 21^st at night. It was a two hours long stand-up comedy event.

This is a six-videos playlist in YouTube. I hope you'll all surely like it. For the full event, you should've been here on the day. ;)

Today(i.e. on 23^rd January) a concert by Sunidhi Chauhan has been scheduled at 7:00 PM; and tomorrow (on 24^th) the well-known metal band TesseracT will be performing.

Those who are unfamiliar with TesseracT(s), here is small info about the band, and people:

UK-based metallers TesseracT will celebrate the dawn of a new decade with something truly special when they unleash their debut album ‘One’ in early 2011.

The record will mark the realisation of a bold, experimental creative vision that began in 2003 as a solo writing project in the mind of guitarist Acle Kahney and has subsequently spawned one of the most hotly tipped metal bands in the UK.

Adding Watermark to videos

This is a tutorial through images to guide you on the point of how to add watermarks to your videos. The task isn't much difficult, but you must be having proper tools for this.

I used Format Factory by Formatoz, for this work.

There are several other softwares available, but I am used to it.

Now, the steps involved are as follows. First of all, open the Format Factory window (after installing it, of course). The window will be similar to

Then, click on the videos section at the left, and chose the format of the video, which you want for your final result. You will now get a window like this:

Click on the Output Settings button there, and chose any one of the media type from the list

There, in the Output Settings window, you will notice The watermark written there. Expand it, and it will look similar to

Click on the ... written in the first line of watermark category. This will then look like

After clicking, you will be asked to chose a file as shown,

Select the file you want to add as watermark, and click OK in the Output Settings window. There, you will have to addd the file / folder to add files which you want to watermark. Select them like this one:

After all the above steps, just click on OK again, and click on the Start button located on the top. The work will be completed later, and you'll be notified about it.

Burnout Paradise - The Ultimate Box

The game is a creation of EA Sports and Criterion Games, and a really good one. The cars are realistic and the animation is just amazing. you can't take your eyes off the car, because, that causes your car to CRASH! And turn them to WRECKED!. There are a total of five-and-seventy (75) cars, and four (4) motorcycles. Yes! the game also has 4 bikes. Less number, but twice the fun. The Paradise City is rich in each kind of beauty; whether natural or artificial. You earn cars for Burning Routes (which are for select cars only), Road Rages, Stunt Runs, Races, Bill Boards, Smashes and lots more.

All the events, like Races, Stunt Runs, Burning Routes, Marked Men and Road Rages are marked as different coloured circles on the map, and are located at all the traffic signals in the game. The different coloured circles with their colours are described below.

Burning Routes: They are provided for selected cars only. In these, you have to beat the time and travel from the start to the end marked by green and red respectively in the map. Winning these routes earn you a new upgraded car model of the same company.
Marked Man: These are the yellow coloured circles in the map. You have to reach your destination without getting WASTED! Two or three cars try to smash you continuously throughout the race. But, you'll have to survive to win.
Road Rages: The red little circles are the best part of this game. just takedown other competitors' cars in the game, to acquire the target takedowns. You can also be taken down, so BEWARE! of other cars too.
Stunt Runs: You earn points for every stunt you perform in this part. You can also get multipliers for BillBoards, Air Time, Barrel Rolls etc. Their is a time limit though. The last combo you are performing will continue till you crash. The combos can be linked by reversing, smashes, boosting etc.
Races: This is the most common part in many other car games. you have to race against some others, from start to the end of race. But, here you are rewarded only when you win the race, by securing a first position.

Now discussing the Gameplay. Why do we need to race and all? Actually, you have a Driving License in the game. This is upgraded by each win. After some continuous wins, you will notice that a new car enters the Paradise City; which neds to be shut down to own it. You need to spot that car on the roads, and take it down. it will reach your Junkyard so that you can chose to play with it too.

Here is a cross-word to be solved. It is taken from Sherlock Holmes' "ASB". It has eleven words, in any order, i.e. from top-to-bottom; left-to-right; bottom-to-top; down-to-up; diagonally upwards, downwards but, adjacent alphabets must be used. Though there are more than eleven words, but these particular ones are the only those, which can form a meaningful sentence/threat.

Harry Potter and Half blood Prince REVIEW

As the anticipated Half Blood-Prince rolls out in the theaters, it also brought joy and smile to all hose Harry Potter fans, who have never ever read any of the seven

books. They are the only ones, who can enjoy that movie... if you call it so. Yes, it had been a nice animation… but not the same for story-line.
There is certainly no comparison between both of them. The movie stands far below even from its prequels. The only justifiable character was that of Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadben), who did his job well. All others are not up to previous five versions.
All those 3 hours had been the most disheartening time I have ever spent, and it had been the first time that I actually slept in any movie... and that too Harry Potter and

the Half Blood-Prince. What did I chose to watch it then? Read on…
Just because I wanted to have a deep peep in the collection of memories (Pensieve) which Dumbledore had collected. All those were nowhere to be even mentioned. The

best subject in Harry Potter’s life, Defense Against the Dark Arts has been stripped off. Those detentions with Snape? The house points system is

also a forgotten story, and no points have been awarded to anyone.
I am aware of the fact that you can’t exceed a movie time from 3 hours, but 3 parts would have done a better job than this.
I also missed the Dursleys, as it is Dudley who supports Harry blindly in Deathly Hallows. Also I was bored at the fragment of duels at The Burrow that has

been stepped in, there was nothing like it. Rather a fight at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was something much better. It was something funny in the face of

security, when Dumbledore Apparated in and out of the School, rather using the way from Hogsmeade.
As Warner Bros. tell us, harry wasn’t petrified when Dumbledore met his tragic end. Moreover if it hasn’t been in the novel, I wouldn’t have got that Rufus

Scrimegeour (who was murdered in Deathly Hallows when he tries to save Harry Potter) is the new Minister for Magic.
I thought that movie would show at least something more than novel when it started with the collapsing of the bridge. I also fail to understand that why has the best fiction

game ever, Quidditch, has been wiped off. As it was the thing which brought Potter and Ginny together, not the ‘Advanced Potion Making’ (book belonging to Half

Blood-Prince AKA Snape).
At least Hokey could’ve been a pleasant work in the movie, for it is due to her that Voldemort got that locket and Dumbledore was compelled to drink that potion in

The Cave. The ‘Sectumsempra’ curse presented a tragic scene, as though Snape was just waiting for Harry to use it on Malfoy.
How easily an enthralling movie has been switched to a boring movie. I feel like crying at such a behavior to all of us.

Opera was launched in 1996, that's about 12 years ago. It was the first to enable tabbed browsing feature in the Browsers history. Later on these feature were aquired by Firefox and IE and recently Google Chrome.

The latest release of Opera on MS Windows was 9.62 which was released about 30 days ago (almost a month).

First of all, some notices:

I will not be responsible for any mischief you do on your behalf. Make a backup copy of Explorer.exe if you are not sure about it. All the files are to be taken from where you have installed your windows. Like "C:\Windows".

First of all, you'll need a software named Resource Hacker which is available over here.

Next, start it up, and open the "explorer.exe" file. Navigate to String Table\37\1033 inside it.

If you have classic version enabled, go to 38

Next step is to edit the value of field inside 578 to whatever you want, like I did it to "hjpotter92".

Now, save the file. You can use "save as..." to save it with another name, like I edited it to "explorerhjp.exe".

Hacking the registry....eh something complex here. Go to registry editor by clicking on "Start\run..." type regedit and then navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon". Search for a string named shell and edit its value to "explorerhjp.exe".
