As a District, we recognize that creating a safe learning environment is a critical part of helping each child achieve academic success. With this knowledge, we introduce Sprigeo, a new online system that students can use to report bullying incidents and school safety threats. Sprigeo will give your child another medium for communicating with our school administration when bullying or school safety incidents occur.

The number one reason why children do not report bullying or abuse is the fear of retaliation from their peers. The Sprigeo reporting form can be accessed from the privacy of a home computer or other internet equipped device, eliminating the possibility of being identified by another student. Although reports can be sent anonymously, over 90% of students include their name when using the Sprigeo system.

Submitting a report is as easy as 1-2-3.
1. Click on the link.
2. Complete the “SEND A REPORT” form.
3. Submit with the “GO” button.

Students can access the reporting form directly through a link on their school’s website, the District’s website, or they may go to Sprigeo.com. All information sent through the Sprigeo system goes directly to school administrators via a secure online connection. The details are immediately sent to our school administrators in a secure e-mail.

We encourage all students to use this new resource to report bullying and help us maintain a safer learning environment.

1. Haga clic en el enlace.
2. Complete la forma “ENVIAR UN INFORME”.

The CAHSEE is a state-mandated graduation requirement for all students. All sophomores, juniors and seniors who have not already passed it will take the test. It is very important that all students are present and prepared to give their best efforts.

As always, we encourage students to be at school on time, well-rested, and with a good breakfast and ask that you schedule any appointments outside of the school day.

If you have any questions about the CAHSEE test or schedule, please contact your school testing secretary.
As a result, lunchtime was shortened, students were guided by staff into classrooms, and the school went on a lockdown as a safety precaution. Shortly after the lockdown began, the incident was resolved and the lockdown was lifted.

Specifically, detainees from a nearby juvenile facility entered the Hanford West campus. Law enforcement officers arrested the individuals within a few minutes, but reported that another detainee might still have been in the area near the school. The principal ordered the schoolwide lockdown as a safety precaution, in keeping with school security procedures. The lockdown was lifted a few minutes later when law enforcement officials reported that the person was apprehended off campus and was in custody.

All Hanford West students and staff are safe and the school day is proceeding as usual.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Remember to cover coughs or sneezes using the inside of your elbow instead of your hands when a tissue is not available.

Wash your hands regularly: Plan ahead to make sure you have easy access to the supplies you need to practice good hand hygiene (soap and water or alcohol-based hand cleaners) and wash your hands often.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth

If you get sick, stay home: People with flu-like symptoms should stay at home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of flu (without fever-reducing medicine).

Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfcases and items such as door knobs, school desks, keyboards, pens, etc.

People who are pregnant or have health conditions that put them at higher risk for complications should see a doctor as soon as possible if flu-like symptoms develop.

Visit the CDC Website for more information about Seasonal Influenza

All campus visitors are already required to check in at the school office during regular school hours. Beginning next week, visitors will be asked to provide a valid legal identification, such as a driver's license, in exchange for a Visitor's Pass before they can access other areas of the campus. Visitors will be escorted to their destination and then escorted back to the office, where their identification will be returned to them.

These stricter procedures, combined with other measures to ensure campus security through the day, are part of our ongoing efforts to continue to safeguard our students and we appreciate your cooperation.

Thank you for your support of our schools. I wish all of our students and families a safe and productive semester.
Classes begin January 14!
The new semester brings new activities, including new academic challenges, spring sports and events, state testing, and even registration for classes for the next school year. Remember, daily attendance is a key factor in student success: All students should be at school on time and ready to work and, whenever possible, appointments should be made outside of the school day, to avoid missed class time.

We hope that all of our students, staff and families had a fun and relaxing Winter Break and we look forward to seeing you all Monday!
The U.S. Marines will be at Hanford West High School Dec. 20 to collect for Toys for Tots. Students, staff and community members can bring new, unwrapped toys to the HW Career Center at any time before then to make a donation.
Help spread that holiday Cheer to those that can not afford to.

We are all deeply saddened by the tragic events at Sandy
Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. As a parent and as an educator, my heart is heavy as I think of the innocent lives stolen and the valiant
efforts of school staff and public safety professionals to
protect the students entrusted to their care. Please join me in keeping the students and families of the Sandy Hook community in your
thoughts as they begin their healing process.

Even as we all mourn for the victims in Connecticut, we know that you will also be
thinking about the safety and security of our own students and schools.

I want to reassure you that student safety remains our highest priority. Our prevention and preparation procedures, regular training and drills, and our strong partnership with local law enforcement and with you, our families and community, are designed to help us identify and respond to any potential safety risks.

Hanford Police Officers serve as School Resource Officers at our
schools, maintaining a presence at our campuses, investigating school
related incidents, and being available to students and staff as needed.

Administrative staff are vigilant about supervising students
during the school day and all staff and students are trained and drill
regularly about how to respond to all kinds of emergency situations,
including situations involving an active shooter.

HJUHSD has a strict expectation that all visitors on campus check in at
the front office. Visitor badges are one way to identify who should, and
shouldn’t, be on campus.

A Campus Safety Tip Line has been set up for each school. Students, parents, staff and community members are encouraged to report any safety concerns to school officials or law enforcement. Please note that these are not intended to be an emergency contact number, but rather a tip-reporting resource:

HWHS: 559.584.4347 / Text: 559.549.4947

HHS: 559.583.7877 / Text: 559.492.8477

SPHS: 559.583.5915 / Text: 559.460.7747

EFJ: 559.582.1515 / Text: 585-1515

As we learn more
about exactly what happened in Connecticut, we will be discussing how we might improve our own safety procedures. Awareness
will continue to be one of our best preventative tools. The simple observations and actions of alert individuals can and have prevented tragedies in many communities. If you are aware of any
suspicious activity or potential threats, please report
them to your school staff or to law enforcement immediately.

There is no easy way to come to terms with a tragedy like this. Our teachers, counselors and school professionals are available to support the emotional needs of our students and families this week. The American Psychological Association and the National Association of School Psychologists recommend that parents encourage children
to talk about their thoughts and feelings and
to reassure them of their own safety. It is also
recommended to limit children's exposure to media coverage of such tragedies. You can visit the sites above for more help and resources.

Sadly, there are no absolute safe havens in our world. But our dedicated
and caring teachers and staff members strive every day to provide a
safe environment where all students can learn and grow. We will continue to protect and nurture our students as we all move forward from this horrific tragedy.

Thank you
for being a part of our school community and
for your support of our students, staff and each other.

Our flags will fly at half-staff today and tomorrow in memory of the victims at Sandy Hook.
Our thoughts are with these families.
