Thanks for your patience!

###

We are experiencing phone service issues affecting all of our schools and offices this morning. Internal (room-to-room) calling is working and staff can make external calls, but we cannot receive incoming calls from outside lines at this time.
If you are trying to call in to our schools or offices and cannot get through, please try again later today. If you would like to email a staff member in the meantime, please see our Staff Directory listing.

We will post an update as soon as phone services are restored. Thank you for your patience.

Parents, students and other users with HJUHSD Online Gradebook accounts will be required to change passwords on your next login as part of a system security update.

The Online Gradebook (ABI) will prompt you to enter your OLD password and then enter your NEW password twice, to make the change.

If your OLD password comes up automatically in the "Old Password" field, please highlight and delete that password and re-enter the old password manually.

If you have trouble changing your password, please email your school Testing Secretary (see contact information below) with: Your name, your student's name and your school name, explaining your problem.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation.

Testing Secretaries:

Hanford High: Cathy Hatfield

Hanford West High:
    Christine Lee

Sierra Pacific High: Sonja Thomas

Earl F. Johnson High:
    Irma Lopez

HELPFUL HINTS FOR STRONG PASSWORDS

DON'T!

Do NOT write down your password in an unsecure location (i.e.: in a desk drawer, in your wallet or in an unsecure file on your computer) … even better, don’t write it down at all.

If you have to write SOMETHING down to help you remember your password, instead write down an obscure HINT that will remind YOU of your password, but NOT mean anything to someone else.

OR use a secure password management program, such as Roboform or ewallet

DO create a strong password

Use lowercase AND uppercase letters

Use more than 8 characters

Use your whole keyboard – combinations of letters, numbers, punctuation and other and special characters make for a stronger password.

BUT, for an even stronger password, try not to use “common” letter-to-symbol conversions, such as “E” to “3” or “S’ to $” or “to” to “2”

DO check your password strength at Microsoft's Password Checker

Do NOT use the same password for everything: You might not mind so much if someone steals the password to your streaming music site … but if that is also the password to your online banking account, you’ll be much more concerned.

DO change your passwords often: Microsoft recommends every 3 months.

DO use a “passphrase”. METHOD #1:

Start with a "random" sentence that you will remember:

Complex passwords are safer.

Remove spaces between the words

complexpasswordsaresafer

Randomly capitalize a few letters

complexpaSSwordSareSafer

Replace at least one letter with a number or symbol.

c0mple&paSSwordS@reSafer

DO use a “passphrase”. METHOD #2:

Think of a sentence at least 8 words long that is unusual, yet easy for YOU to remember

My Dalmatian, Charlie, loves rawhide bones and long naps

Shorten it the first letter of every word in that sentence

mdclrbaln

capitalize at least one letter

mdClrbalN

change at least one letter to a number or special character

mdClrb@lN

HOW SECURE IS YOUR PASSWORD?

Excerpted from How I'd Hack Your Weak Passwords

Pay particular attention to the difference between using only
lowercase characters and using all possible characters (uppercase,
lowercase, and special characters – like @#$%^&*). Adding just one
capital letter and one asterisk would change the processing time for an 8
character password from 2.4 days to 2.1 centuries.

Remember, these are just for an average computer, and these assume you aren’t using any word in the dictionary. If Google put their computer to work on it they’d finish about 1,000 times faster.

This year, students will perform an original play, "Gettin' Nothing for Christmas". This play is meant for young audiences and features musical numbers, dancing and spectacle that kids of all ages can appreciate. It is the story of three mischevious little girls who find trouble when they escape into a world of life size toys. Together with the help of a life-sized Barbie, a self conscious Batman action figure and precocious elves, the girls learn to resolve their conflicts in time for the holidays.

Admission is $3 for adults and students. Children 10 and under are free. After the show, there will be delicious baked goods for sale. All proceeds go to the HHS Drama Club for future college tours, festivals and field trips.

This grant is made available through the California Department of Education. If awarded the grant, HJUHSD could receive more than $900,000 to provide an after school program for HJUHSD students.

The ASSETs Program would allow the District to provide activities/classes for students that provide academic assistance such as tutoring and homework support, enrichment and family literacy. Students would start the After School Program, which would run Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. until at lest 5 p.m. with a healthy snack and then choose from a variety of academic or enrichment classes to attend. Students would also able to participate in several types of physical activities. A Credit Recovery Program would likely be offered for students needing to earn credit for graduation.

To successfully apply for the grant, the District needs to describe and identify collaborative partners - parents, students and teachers. Please help us by taking five minutes to complete the following survey before November 23:

HJUHSD ASSESTs Grant Survey

The survey will allow you to have input into the types of classes and activities the District would be able to provide for students through this program.
Thank you in advance for your time and input!
Congratulations to the Hanford FFA - winners of the 54th annual California FFA State Cotton Judging Contest. Twelve teams from across the San Joaquin Valley competed for this year’s title Nov. 5 at CSU Fresno.

Hanford team members judged Pima lint, seed, bolls and plants and took a general knowledge test of the California Cotton Industry. Members of the championship team included:

Maddy Wisecarver, 1st High Individual

Katie LaBlue, 2nd High Individual

Claudia Flores, 5th High Individual

Russell Zimmerman

The teams continues a tradition of success in the Cotton Judging Career Development Event. Since 1970, Hanford FFA Cotton Judging Teams have won 26 state titles. This year’s victory is the third in the last four years for the Hanford chapter.
Hanford FFA members came home with multiple awards from the 84th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis last month.

The Hanford FFA Chapter submitted its state-winning national chapter application to the National FFA Chapter Award program in June and was recognized as a 3-star winner during the national convention - the highest rating a chapter can be awarded.

The National FFA Chapter Award program, sponsored by John Deere, recognizes FFA chapters for developing and conducting a detailed Program of Activities. Each activity provides opportunities for members to excel in one of three areas: Student, chapter or community development. Every year, chapters are recognized as having earned a one, two, or three-star rating on their application.

In addition to the chapter recognition, Hanford FFA member William Brewster Jr. was the National Winner of Agricultural Processing Entrepreneurship Award, earning a $500 prize for his accomplishment.

Fifteen Hanford FFA Chapter Members received the highest honor the National FFA awards - the American FFA Degree. Five of those members traveled to Indianapolis to accept their degrees: Tyler Beck, Val Evans, Phillip Nunes, Kristyn Torres and Lee Wisecarver.

The American FFA Degree recognizes demonstrated leadership ability and outstanding achievements in agriculture business, production, processing or service programs. To be eligible, members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program in which they start, own or hold a professional position in an existing agriculture enterprise and serve 50 community service hours. Recipients must also make it their mission to demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement. Each award recipient received a Gold American FFA Degree key, and a certificate in a blue leatherette frame. Of the 540,379 FFA members nationwide, the 15 Hanford FFA Chapter members were among only 3,241 to be recognized in 2011.

“The Hanford community should be very proud of our FFA chapter for many accomplishments both as individuals and as a chapter during the 84th National FFA Convention,” FFA advisor Lilly Pimentel said.

Parents of student athletes are invited to attend a free workshop this Thursday to learn how to help their students get the most out of their sports experience.

"It addresses how parents can help coaches and league
administrators establish and maintain a positive competitive
environment,” HJUHSD Superintendent Bill Fishbough said. “The workshop also
gives parents tips for discussing occurrences in college and
professional sports with their student to bring out life lessons."

The workshop is hosted by the Positive Coaching Alliance, a Stanford University-based non-profit organization developed to teach parents, coaches and organizational leaders how to effectively work with young athletes while instilling the values of teamwork, discipline, respect and goal-setting.

"Working with hundreds of youth and high school sports organizations around the United States, we've developed practical tools and guidelines to help these student athletes, their coaches and parents realize that winning is not only reflected in game scores but also in the effort players give, the learning and improvement they achieve, and the ability they develop to bounce back from mistakes,” said Jim Thompson, founder and director of Positive Coaching Alliance. “We’re excited that the Hanford Joint Union High School District recognizes the tremendous potential sports participation offers for today’s student athletes and is working to realize that potential by emphasizing a positive District culture for their players, coaches, and parents.”

The workshop is open to all parents of Hanford High, Hanford West High and Sierra Pacific High student athletes.

About Positive Coaching Alliance:

Founded as a non-profit within the Stanford University Athletic Department in 1998, Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) has the mission of “transforming high school sports so sports can transform the student.”

To that end, PCA has conducted nearly 9,000 live group workshops nationwide for more than 475,000 youth and high school sports leaders, coaches and parents. Workshop attendees have helped create a positive, character-building sports environment for roughly 3.5 million youth and high school athletes.

PCA’s partnership network includes more than 1,700 youth and high school sports organizations, cities and schools. In 2011, PCA will conduct roughly 1,300 live, group workshops across the U.S., while assisting tens of thousands of other individuals via online workshops at www.PositiveCoach.org.

PCA trains coaches to be Double-Goal Coaches®, whose first goal is winning and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports. PCA also cultivates Second-Goal ParentsTM, who focus on life lessons through sports and helps produce Triple-Impact CompetitorsTM, student-athletes who work to improve themselves, their teammates, and their sport as a whole. PCA has the support of elite coaches and athletes on a National Advisory Board including Los Angeles Lakers Coach Phil Jackson, Boston Celtics Coach Doc Rivers and dozens of others.
