Conception

This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Key Thought

While we try to understand how the Spirit of God works in our lives, a deep sense of mystery, wonder, and awe remains. How could God love us so much as to be present in us through his Holy Spirit? This inexplicable miracle is a miracle of God's promise and grace. The holy and eternal God comes to life in us through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit produces great changes in us because of his presence.
Let's think about this a little differently than we normally do. The conception of Jesus the Messiah in the womb of the Virgin Mary seems incomprehensible to many. However, those of us who are followers of Jesus have experienced a small taste of what happened in Mary in our own spiritual lives. Just as Jesus came to life in her through the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit, he has also come to life in us through the same Spirit. While we didn't experience a miraculous conception, we are part of a miraculous transformation.
At the core of Jesus' gospel is this truth: The Spirit of God brings life where there was none. This new life that happened in the womb of Mary still happens through the Spirit in the expectant hearts of those who believe that Mary's first child was also God's Son!

Today's Prayer

Father, our hearts resonate with a truth that our minds can't grasp: The virgin Mary carried your Son in her womb! And the miracle in Mary is a reminder that you have given us new birth into a living hope through the power of the blessed Holy Spirit who not only provided the miracle of Jesus' birth but also raised him from the dead. All praise to you, O God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I praise you in Jesus' name. Amen.

Overflow!

Key Thought

We live in the overflow of God's grace. David said it well in Psalm 23, "my cup overflows." Because of the Spirit's presence, our hope overflows! In addition to goodness, peace, and joy (Romans 14:17 NLT), the presence of the Holy Spirit brings deep, abiding, and personal hope! But let's not get overly focused on just the promise to us of the Holy Spirit's presence. Instead, let's also notice that this passage contains a blessing that we can share with other believers - releasing God's blessing of the Spirit into their lives. This blessing of the Spirit can bring them joy, peace, and hope! What a great gift to share with others who love Jesus.

Today's Prayer

Father, I thank you for your presence in my life. Your presence has brought me hope, joy, and peace and encourages me to live a good life. Please use me to bless others so that they can experience these blessings from your Spirit. Open my eyes to those who need this blessing of the Spirit. Give me the gracious words to share this blessing with others at just the right moment when they need to hear them. Finally, dear Father, thank you for the power to bless others. In Jesus' name, I thank you. Amen.

Who Can Argue with These Qualities?

For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too.

Key Thought

Who can argue with goodness, peace, and joy? These three virtues are not obtained just by human effort. Yes, a passion to possess these godly qualities is necessary, but the source of these qualities is the Holy Spirit alive in us. Goodness, peace, and joy have their source in God's nature and are made real in us through the work of the Holy Spirit. As we invite the Holy Spirit to reign over our inner being, our character is transformed to be more and more like Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:17-18). So let's yearn for the Holy Spirit to transform us to be ever more like Christ and trust that the Spirit's influence will be displayed in our lives through goodness, peace, and joy.

Today's Prayer

Father, don't let me be distracted by, or addicted to, food or drink. I want to be sustained and fed spiritually and emotionally by the presence of your Holy Spirit within me. I specifically pray that your goodness, peace, and joy will become more and more apparent in my life as I seek to honor Christ and yield myself to the influence of your Spirit. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Confirmation

Key Thought

We often use hyperbole to make an emphatic point about something that is important to us. Hyperbole is an overstatement meant to get other people's attention. The words of hyperbole can even be jarring to help others understand the emotions behind the words spoken. Paul is about to make an incredibly shocking statement about being willing to be cut off from Christ if it would mean that his own people, the Jews, would know Jesus as their Messiah and LORD (Romans 9:1-5). But, Paul has done his own spiritual inventory: What he says is NOT hyperbole or exaggeration. He means it with all of his heart, and the Holy Spirit confirms it. As The Message puts it, "I'm not exaggerating - Christ and the Holy Spirit are my witnesses." Since the Holy Spirit lives within us and works with our consciences to convict us of sin, to help us discern God's truth when it is proclaimed, and to confirm God's truth within us, Paul can speak with assurance that what he says is the truth. We might stretch the truth to each other, but we cannot lie to the Spirit who lives within us.

Today's Prayer

Heavenly Father, I want to speak the truth in love. I know that I need the convicting, comforting, and confirming Holy Spirit to be at work in my heart so that my words are true and redemptive. I ask for this grace in Jesus' name. Amen.

The Father Knows Our Hearts

And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will.

Key Thought

After the incredible promise of the previous verse and the Spirit's intercession for us (Romans 8:26 ESV), Paul adds promise upon promise. He tells us that the Spirit of the one true and living God pleads for us "with groanings too deep for words." He then adds that the Spirit pleads for us in harmony with the Father's will. Like being unable to explain how Jesus was both fully God and fully human when he walked this earth, I do not know how to fully explain the beauty and wonder of this truth about the Spirit's intercession for us. The Father knows our hearts. The Spirit pleads for us. The Spirit's pleadings and intercession are done in harmony with the will of God. My human brain can't capture all that these truths mean. However, I take comfort in knowing that God loves us in such high and holy ways and yet lives within us in a holy nearness that defies explanation. Sometimes, I believe, we are meant to be lost in the wonder of such grace and not try to dissect it. This grace is to be claimed at all times, including when our hearts are breaking, our minds are confused, and our lives are hard. The Comforter is near. He knows and pleads our deepest longings and aligns them to the will of a loving and knowing Father.

Today's Prayer

O Father, to know you are near and you care about my struggles is such a wonderful blessing. Thank you for your loving care. The gift of Jesus, in whose name I offer this prayer, is a precious blessing and tells me so much about your love for us as your children. As I ponder the incredible nature of the Holy Spirit's dwelling within me and the Spirit's role as an intercessor for me, I find another channel of grace given to me that I have not fully appreciated. The Spirit speaks the deepest emotions and desires of my heart, even those I can't put into words. Please forgive me for taking the presence of the Spirit in my life for granted. Thank you, dear Father, for your holy nearness. Amen.

Too Deep for Words

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Key Thought

Nearly all of us have been at this desperate place. Our souls are brittle and dry. All our prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling. They fall lifelessly to the ground and come to rest at our feet as bitter reminders of our failure and spiritual impotence.

Like every other great blessing from God, prayer has its origin and power in the Father's grace. Thankfully, the power of our prayers is not dependent upon our feelings, our perceptions, or our choice of words. The power of our prayers rests in the hands of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit - as the Helper, Advocate, and Comforter - intercedes for us with our Father. Our Comforter articulates what we cannot say and captures the emotions we cannot verbalize. Our Advocate takes our prayers before the Father after his work of perfecting our words and emotions. He then intercedes for us according to the Father's will. Prayer, then, is not just a spiritual discipline, but also an incredible gift of our Father's grace. The Spirit assures us that we will always be heard and that our deepest longings will always be understood by the Father who loves us and always longs to hear the cry of our hearts.

Today's Prayer

O Father, I praise you. Because of the intercession of the Holy Spirit in this very moment, I know that you hear more than what my words say. You know what's on my heart. You know my doubts, my insecurities, my secret sins, and my frustrating struggles. And, dear Father, you know my deep desire to have these things redeemed and transformed by your grace so that I live for your glory. I thank you for your grace, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Adoption as Sons

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

Key Thought

At first glance, the phrase "adoption as sons" may sound sexist. Exactly the opposite is true. In many places in Paul's day, daughters didn't have the same rights of inheritance as sons. Not so with God and his children. There is no distinction in his kingdom based on gender, social position, or race (Galatians 3:26-29). We are all God's true heirs, with all the same privileges of inheritance as our first-born older brother, Christ (Romans 8:14-17). Such a statement about adoption for all Christians was generally unthinkable in a first-century world divided by so many distinctions. This break from the norms of the day was especially significant given the widespread devaluation of women and their importance. With the coming of the Holy Spirit, God makes clear that those distinctions are inappropriate. And so together, we all join with the whole of creation crying out for the day Jesus returns, and everything is changed with our full adoption and the complete redemption of our bodies. The Holy Spirit is our promise, "guaranteeing what is to come" (2 Corinthians 5:5). The Spirit's indwelling within each of us is the firstfruit assurance that the full blessing of the Spirit will come.

Today's Prayer

We cry out, O Father, for the full realization and experience of our redemption and adoption. We trust, O almighty God, that you will indeed answer our prayer because of the presence of your Holy Spirit within each of us. We thank you and give you glory in the name of our Savior and LORD, Jesus Christ. Amen.
