Fabric Painting: Floral Bed Sheet Pattern

Painting on fabric is totally a different experience – because it needs a lot of patience. I got inspired for this kind of painting when my sister presented me a hand painted bed sheet on my anniversary.

Here is a pattern which you can download. See below to find the details of material required and step by step procedure.

Material required for Fabric painting:

Cotton cloth
Cloth ring
Paint brush
Fabric color
Fabric color medium
Pattern on tracing paper/ you can do free hand drawing

Step by step procedure:

Take a cotton cloth; wash it with water. Remember to remove the starch (if any) properly. Sometimes the cloth get shrink on first wash so prewashing is a good idea to start with fabric painting.
Iron the cloth after wash to remove all wrinkles. Wrinkles may result to disaster for fabric painting.
Draw/Trace the pattern on cloth.
Fix the cloth ring on the fabric from where you have to start the painting.
Complete the portion inside the cloth ring. Let it dry completely and then move onto another portion.
You can simply fill the color or to have an innovative look try shading it as is done in the pattern.
Once you finish with painting and drying procedure your last step will be to wash the bed sheet with water before use.

Floating Rangoli – Step by Step

An artistic appearance of painting by using color is called Rangoli/ Kolam. In the northern part of India it is known as Rangoli whereas the same art in South India is called Kolam. In India many type of rangoli is made like Funnel rangoli, 3D rangoli, Stencil rangoli, Portrait rangoli and Floating rangoli.

I was interested to make a floating rangoli and tried it several times. Frankly speaking I was not so successful in making it, so I tried it with a little variation. Here is my material, step by step procedure and pattern of my water rangoli.

Material required for making floating rangoli

Butter paper
Glass outliner
Glass color
Rangoli Pattern
Flat vessel (Crystal/ plastic/steel/ Brass)
Water

Step by step procedure for making floating rangoli

Draw the rangoli pattern on butter paper with pencil
Outline it with glass outliner and allow it to dry completely.
Fill the pattern with help of glass color and once again allow it to dry
Pour water in a vessel.
Slowly immerse the pattern upside down in water.

Things to remember while making floating rangoli

It is not compulsory to put the pattern upside down. Whichever side looks good/ attractive you can immerse it by your choice.
Choose the place where you want to display your water rangoli before immersing the pattern in water, moving the vessel may spoil your floating rangoli.

India has a rich and colorful tradition of designing Rangolis during festivals. New Year eve, Sankranti, Ugadi, Pongal or Diwali almost every festival is marked by somewhat distinct Rangoli designs. In South India Rangoli is known as Kolam. Every morning South Indian women create beautiful Kolams outside their houses - it brings prosperity – a belief. It is a welcome sign – sign of invitation.

Belief can be challenged but these beautiful Rangolis/Kolams are a wonderful expression of one’s creativity. The joy of creating it is simply amazing. Apart from the decoration & artistic pleasure it has some religious and spiritual value as well. Kolams are created using rice flour which is eaten away by ants and other insects – a good example of peaceful co-existence :-)

Tips & Tricks for Making Floating Candle

I learnt a few things while making my first floating candle. I would like to share the same with my readers.

First of all I would like to tell my readers that making their own floating candle is not at all time consuming. You need to follow few steps. Read my previous article on How to Make Floating Candle-DIY to learn the basics of making your own floating candle. Why to buy a expensive floating candle when you can have your own?
Melt the wax on slow flame, otherwise there’s a risk of breaking a fire. Better option is to use Double Boiler. (Fill the lower pan with water, place the wax contained bowl over it, heat it till the wax is melt.)
For making Scented Candle, you have to look into your kitchen for rose, vanilla, strawberry essence. You can also use aromatic oil in melted wax. Remember not to over do it. Add drop by drop by continuously mixing it.
Different kind of moulds (cast/pattern) can be used for making floating candle. Be a little creative here and you can find a few molds at your home itself.
- Nowadays various shapes of readymade moulds (mold: US English) are easily available in art and craft shop.
- Fused blub can be used, but remember to break the blub carefully while removing the candle out of it, otherwise there’s a risk of injuring your hand.
- Muffin tray are used for making candles, remember to apply oil on the base of each cup, to avoid sticking wax at the base. Keep it aside to cool. Once the wax is cool just twist and turn the tray to remove the wax.
The best use of old crayons can be done by making candle out of it.
Use this scented candle during festivals (Diwali etc), birthday parties or during your anniversary.

Diwali - How to Make Floating Candle - DIY

Diwali – The festival of light, sweets, crackers, happiness and Decoration. This Diwali I thought to make my own floating candles instead of buying.
Material Required for Making Floating Candle

Wax
Thread
Pencil
Match Box
Container.

Procedure for Making Floating Candle

Take a paper cup (easily available in market, Generally used in tea stall for serving tea.)
Take wax in a container and heat it on a slow flame. [You can melt a few half used candles]
Mean while take a thick thread tie it with pencil. Be careful to place the candle exactly at the centre as shown below.

Pour the melted wax in a paper cup.
Keep it aside for cooling.
After 15 minutes, once the wax is settled; gradually pull off the pencil.
Now hold the cup and tear the paper cup as shown below.

Cut the protruding thread, if any.
Here you are ready with your homemade floating candle.

Material Required for Floating Candle in a Bowl

Crystal Bowl
Flower petals
Vermilion

Procedure for Decorating the Floating Candle

Take a crystal bowl add some water and a spoon full of vermilion (Sindoor) in it.
Add flower petals( you can use Rose and Marigold flower )
Place a candle carefully in the bowl .
Lit it with match stick.

Coffee Painting: OM-GANESH Pattern

Here’s my attempt for an eco-friendly painting. I’ve selected OM-GANESHA pattern but with a little variation. God Ganesha Crown is made out of Bread dough, to give 3D look to the painting. To know basic on Coffee Painting(CP) like what are material used and procedure, you can refer to my previous posts

In this post I am sharing how to make Bread Dough. Below is the pattern of my OM-GANESHA Coffee Painting & material and procedure for making Bread dough.

Material used for making Bread dough:-

Bread Slice
White Adhesive (Fevicol)
Moisturizing lotion

Procedure for making bread dough:-

Crush 2 small size bread slices in a container.
Add 2tbsp of white adhesive (Fevicol)
Apply some lotion to your palm and fingers, to avoid sticking it to your hands.
Mix the bread and fevicol until it turns in soft dough.
Immediately apply it on the area you want to highlight.
Before it get dry, I have used Ball pen refill to make design on crown.
Color it with coffee liquid.
let it dry.
lastly apply varnish and let it dry for at least 2 days.

Shade Art Ram-Sita - DIY

One day while purchasing some art material at my nearest art and craft store, my eyes stuck on a very interesting pattern of Ram-Sita. I decided to do something different with it. Instead of coloring it I tried shading it, and the final result was awesome.

Here is the pattern, material required and detailed procedure – DIY - for making this Shade Art of Ram-Sita.

Material required for Shade Art:

Wooden Board.
Pattern on felt (Black cotton) cloth.
White Fabric color.
Silver Fabric Color.
Paint Brush (Size 000).

Procedure of Shade Art:

Outline the whole pattern with white fabric color and let it dry.
Start shading the pattern with silver color and use very fine painting brush to get better strokes.
Just in two easy steps your Shade Art is ready to decor your lifeless wall.

P.S. : If you are a beginner in shading, first practice it on paper or some rough cloth so that you don’t spoil the original pattern.

Sand Painting- Radha Krishna Pattern

I am back with one more sand painting pattern. First have a look on the pattern.

The outline is made with the help of black thick thread.
The jewelry and costume detailing is done with M-seal, then I have applied Golden color to highlight detailing.
I have made small balls of M-Seal and let it dry.
Then I had stuck it on the pattern with help of adhesive.
Here the color used is Fabric color.

What are the brands for glass color and from where I can get?

In Indian market two brand of glass colors are found - Camel and Pedilite. I generally use Camel glass color and it is easily available from any stationary shop.

Is it necessary to use ceramic powder in outliner?

Sometimes ceramic powder is not easily available in hardware shop, so I have tried using plaster of paris and whitening powder instead of ceramic powder while making outliner cone. But the proportion should be appropriate.

What are the steps in making outliner without ceramic powder

Material required for outliner:

Plastic Sheet (to make cone)
Plaster of paris (easily available in hardware shop)
Whitening powder (easily available in hardware shop)
Fevicol (to mix with ceramic)
Color (any shade as per requirement)
Small plastic container and spoon (for mixing)
Cello tape and scissor.

Steps for making outliner:

Make a cone (required size) out of plastic sheet and fix it with cello tape.
Mix plaster of paris, whitening powder, Fevicol and fabric color in a plastic container.
No lumps should be left.
Pour the paste in the cone and fix it with lot of cello tape to avoid any leakage.
Cut the tip of cone (as per required thickness) with scissor.
And here is your outliner ready with using Plaster of Paris, whitening powder and Fevicol (adhesive).

Why whitening powder and plaster of paris are used in making Mural dough or outliner.

Using Plaster of Paris in Mural dough will make dough hard, which results in unfinished shape. Whitening powder gives a very nice finish to the shape made out of dough and also dough can remain for longer period of time, if kept properly in air tight container.

How to make dough for murals or ceramic pot?

I use three easy ways for making dough for murals or ceramic pot:
One is to simply use ceramic powder and Fevicol; thickness can be based on the requirement.
Second is to make the dough out of white cement and Fevicol, but in this case you need to be little expert to handle the dough.
Third way is to mix plaster of paris, whitening powder and Fevicol.

How to make texture for mural art

Mix white cement and Fevicol and make a thick paste and apply it on required portion on which you have to give texture. Let it dry for only 5-10 minutes and make some desired texture with the help of pen/pencil, any thick stick or bottle cap.

Which surface is used for sand painting?

Generally wooden board is used for Sand painting.

What is Duplex Paper?

A sheet of paper, on which both the sides have different color. It is easily available in stationary shop.

What are murals?

Wikipedia defines Murals as a piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other large permanent surface.

Rimjhim Painting Tutorial for Beginners - DIY

Rimjhim Painting is a creative way of using glass color in a different way. Instead of glass sheet a canvas cloth is used for the painting. It is called Rimjhim Painting as White Sparkle/Glitter Powder is used, which gives very shining look to the painting. I am sharing step by step procedure of Rimjhim Painting so that you can also have your own.

Basic Materials Required:

A piece of Canvas cloth
Pattern on Butter paper
Marker pen
White sparkle powder/ White glitter powder
Glass painting color
Fevicol(White Glue)
Brush

Step by Step Procedure for Rimjhim Painting

1. Take a canvas cloth and trace a pattern with the help of a thin pointed Marker pen.

2. Apply white glue (Favicol) all over the canvas cloth with help of brush and before drying it evenly sprinkle white glitter powder.

3. Now apply Glass color on the pattern and let it dry.

4. Frame it and hang it on wall

Tips:

Keep some rough cloth below canvas cloth before applying white glue and color otherwise it will spoil the surface.
Apply only glass color so that Rimjhim (Sparkle powder) effect is more visualized.
Apply only white sparkle/glitter powder; do not use multi color sparkle powder.

Foil Paper Art – Krishna Pattern - A Tutorial

In my Puja room (home temple) I have kept almost every Gods idol/frame but Krishnaji was missing. So instead of buying it I decided to make my own. Check the brief tutorial of Foil Paper Art – Krishna Pattern:

Basic Material Used for Foil Paper Art:

Krishna Pattern on Butter paper or chart paper
Piece of glass with frame
Aluminium Foil paper(Gold or Silver whichever is available)
Black Asian oil paint
Black outliner
Brush

Procedure for Foil Paper Art:

Place Pattern below the Glass Sheet and draw the pattern on glass with the help of outliner from above.
Paint the background with black color and let it dry.
For Krishna-No need to color just take aluminium foil paper (almost the size of your glass frame), fold it carefully and slightly crush it then again open it carefully.
Place the crush foil paper sheet on glass on the same side where you have painted black color .
Fix the foil paper on glass with solo tape.
on the other side you will get the result that is the below picture.
Frame it and hang it on puja room.

DIY Tutorial - Stroke Painting

I have again come up with my new painting which I can say is best out of waste. It’s best out of waste because I’ve used a left-over plywood sheet. If you are not lucky enough to have a spare one at home you can easily buy one, of required dimension, from your neighborhood store.

Basic Material required for Stroke Painting

Wooden board (Preferred size).
Pattern of your choice
Asian Black Paint
Camlin Paint Brush (Size: 00, 3/4)
Camel Metallic Bronze color
Camel Metallic Copper color

Steps for Stroke Painting

Color the wooden board with black Asian paint. Let it dry.
Start painting the pattern with the help of 3/4 size paint brush and Camel Metallic Copper color. (If you are not comfortable in directly using color on board then draw the pattern with pencil first and then color it). Let it dry
Outline the pattern with Camel Metallic Bronze color (Use Camlin Paint Brush size 00 for outline) and if needed apply shading.
Frame it and hang it.

Glass Painting FAQs & Tips for Beginners

A few of my readers have landed at my blog searching about some specific beginner’s level query about Painting, Glass Painting & type of Painting Brushes etc. To do justice with these readers I have compiled a few queries for this post to specifically address the beginners concern about painting. Hope this helps.

What should be the thickness of glass for glass painting?

Use 2mm glass sheet for best possible clarity or transparency (but handle it with utmost care while framing & transporting. It is brittle)
Use 3 mm glass sheet if you require durability & a fair degree of transparency.

For best results a 3mm glass sheet is recommended.

What are the types of painting brush?

Pony Brush
Fan Brush
Hog Brush
Flat brush
Round Brush
Filbert brush

Depending on your choice you can opt for Natural or Synthetic bristles. Every time after use it is essential to clean the brush properly otherwise the paint dries on it making the brush useless. Bristles can be quickly cleaned by washing it with warm water and mild soap or dipping it in thinner.

How to remove stain from glass before doing glass painting?

The first step for starting any Glass Painting is to clean your Glass Sheet with soap water and wipe it with the help of some tissue sheet by holding the glass sheet from its corner. Sometimes soap water is not enough to remove stubborn stain like grease, in such case using thinner or alcohol on cotton swab is helpful.

How to get 3D effect for sand painting?

For getting 3D effect for sand painting thick outliner or thick black thread can be used. Trace the pattern on a wooden board. Apply adhesive on outline with help of nozzle (or paint brush) and stick thick black thread. Apply desired color on the thread.

Which type of color should be used for Glass painting?

Any type of color which glass hold’s can be used. For glass painting specially glass color are available in different shades, sometimes Artist’s call it as transparent color. Fabric color can also be used in painting Glass, which is also refer to as opaque color.

What are the uses of Outliner?

Outliner can be used for multiple forms of painting - Glass Painting, Canvas Painting, Murals, and Name Plates etc.

How to avoid air bubbles while using glass color (transparent color) while painting glass surface/sheet?

Never shake the bottle of glass color.
If the bubbles appear, then immediately pierce it with pin/needle or remove it with paint brush.

Duplex Paper Flower Tutorial - DIY

Don’t you think decorating a pot and keeping it without flowers is just incomplete. You can make flower at home by following some simple steps. Required material and procedure are as below.

Required Materials for making Duplex Paper Flower

Duplex Paper (Desired color)
Aluminum wire
Thread
Fevicol (White Adhesive)
Green Crape paper
Scissor

Note: Duplex paper is easily available in the stationary shop. On a single sheet you will find two shades of color on each side. Here I have used Duplex paper having white at one side and orange color at the other side.

Procedure for making Duplex Paper Flower:

Draw a petal shape with pencil behind the duplex paper so you can cut it properly using scissor, Call it `Petal A’. (Desired size)
Draw another petal shape, smaller than the before petal. Cut it and keep it aside, Call it `Petal B’.
Similarly for one flower cut 5 petals A and 5 petals B. Stick one from each as shown below.

Roll crape paper to place it in center of flower so it looks more attractive.
Now take Aluminium wire and tie crape paper roll
Then one by one tie petals with help of thread.

Here is your first duplex paper flower … ready to cheer your senses!

Ceramic Pot Painting Tutorial - DIY

After Ceramic Mural I have come up with Ceramic Pot Painting. I made a very simple pattern for my readers, here are the basic material and step by step procedure:

Basic Material for Ceramic Pot Painting

Pot (Desired size and shape)
Brown Fabric Color
Metallic Gold Color
Whitening Powder
Plaster of Paris
Fevicol (glue)
Varnish
Feviquick (adhesive)

Before going to procedure have a look at my finished Ceramic Pot Painting

Step by Step Procedure for Ceramic Pot Painting:

Mix 4 table-spoon of whitening powder, 1 table-spoon of plaster of paris to Fevicol and make a dough out of it.
Make flower from dough.
Let it dry for at least for 12 hours. Meanwhile paint the pot with brown color and let it dry.
Now stick the petals with help of Feviquick and color it with Golden Color.
Spread some Golden Color on rest of the pot to give antique look.
Lastly apply varnish over the pot and let it dry.

Quick Tip:

Instead of Whitening powder and plaster of paris you can also use ceramic powder, but it may not be easily available.

According to FENG-SHUI, it is said that to avoid negative rays at home, earthen pot should be kept. So why not decorate it and make it attractive and keep it.

Basic Material for Pot Painting

Pot (Desired size)
Outliner
Fabric color
Painting brush
Black oil paint
Primer or varnish

Step by Step - Procedure for Pot Painting

Wash the pot and let it dry in sunlight
Apply first coat of primer so that pot does not absorb too much color and let it dry.
Apply Black oil paint as your second coat and allow it to dry at least for 24 hours.
Then you can do one stroke painting with paint brush and color.

OR

Repeat first two steps as above.
Instead of applying black oil paint after primer, draw some design with the help of pencil.
Outline the design with Camel Black Outliner.
Fill the best suited color in design.
Apply Black oil paint in rest of the area and let it dry.

I am feeling good & encouraged by numerous compliments – both online & offline – for my first Coffee Painting - Egyptian Queen Pattern. I thought to give another try on another pattern. In this coffee painting I had given some texture in the background & colored it with white and Metallic Golden color. While coloring the man face I have added a drop of red color to coffee, rest of the pattern is colored using coffee.

Coffee Painting - Egyptian Queen Pattern - DIY

Enjoying Coffee during winter is so wonderful but trust me making Coffee Painting is a wonderful experience. You don’t get such a rich look and texture with any other paint. Mix coffee and water to get different shades of brown color. I made an Egyptian Queen, here’s the procedure.
Material used for Coffee Painting

Coffee Powder
Canvas Board
Outliner (Gold and Black color)
Varnish
Paint brush

Procedure for Coffee Painting

Draw or trace the design on canvas board and then outline it with golden color outliner. Let it dry.
Mix Coffee and water to get different shades. Use less water to get darker shade and more and more water for light to lighter shades.
Let it dry and apply varnish to get more shine.
And finally, frame it and hang it and enjoy compliments.

Ceramic Mural – DIY Painting Tutorial

Last month I had some interior work at home. As usual there were some leftover wooden pieces and white cement. I had heard about ceramic Mural and thought to give a try. Here is how I made it.

Materials used for Ceramic Mural

Wooden Piece (Desired size).
White cement.
Fevicol (Adhesive).
Faber Castle Metallic Color (Gold, Copper, Bronze color).
Copper color outliner (optional).
Ganesh idol (You can choose any idol).

Step By Step Procedure for Ceramic Mural

Mix white cement and Fevicol. Make a thick paste and apply all over wooden board. Let it dry for 5-10 minutes and make some desired texture with help of pen/pencil or any thick stick.

I had started with the corner of wooden piece, had given curve texture then zigzag with help of pen. In the middle I had given this texture with the help of paint brush. Let it dry for overnight.

Make dough from white cement and fevicol.
I had made rose flower, petals and few buds out of dough.
Let it dry for at least 24 hours or till it becomes hard.

Arrange and stick this flower with help of fevicol on corner of frame and color it with metallic Bronze, Gold and Copper color. I had highlight zigzag texture with help of copper color outliner as shown below.
In the middle of the frame I had stick Ganesh idol (bought from the gift shop).
Let it dry till it completely sticks.
Finally I had stick thread around a frame (it’s optional).

A Creative Hobby Idea – Golden Foil Paper Art

Once enjoying my Dairy Milk, a Creative Art Idea struck my mind! Why not make something interesting with golden foil which is used to wrap a Chocolate? I took a plywood piece and started executing my idea. Here’s a list of material, procedure and picture of my art work.

Material used for Foil Paper Art

Piece of plywood.
Asian Paint (Black color)
Silver Foil (Which is generally used to wrap food)
Golden Foil (Kuchh meetha ho jaaye)
Fevicol (any adhesive) Scissor

Procedure for Foil Paper Art

Apply black paint on plywood and let it dry.
In my Foil Paper Art I have made a tree and a few birds on it. I have used silver foil for tree and moon, and golden foil for birds.
So first I have cut and pasted silver foil for tree, branches and leaves. Be careful while handling foil paper as they are very delicate.
Then I have cut and pasted birds accordingly.

A Million $ Tip for Free: For birds, draw the outline on backside of Golden Foil first and then cut it with scissor or cutter.

How to Make Photo Frame at Home – Hobby Ideas: DIY

Basic Material I have used for Photo frame:

Cardboard
Asian Paint (Black color)
Fabric color (Silver color)
Fevicol
Outliner (copper color)

Procedure for Photo frame:

Cut 2 piece of cardboard in rectangle shape (Call it Cardboard A and B).
Take `A’ piece of cardboard and cut 3 rectangle shapes inside it as shown below.
Apply Black color on cardboard `A’ and immediately apply silver color.
Draw freehand design with help of outliner, and let it dry for 24 hour.
Stick photos or greeting card on it.
After sticking photograph stick Cardboard `B’ behind Cardboard `A’.
