What can God do with A SHIRT, A HOMELESS MAN, A CHILD, and A CHURCH??

“What is the goal of HOBO NATION?” I get asked that often and each time I break it down to explain that our goal is to use the artistic abilities of men and women living on the street to create shirts and other items we sell to help raise funds that we use to help fund homeless back to work programs.

We have noticed many other wonderful things that have come out of HOBO NATION. We have seen men who live most of their lives in shame, beam with delight and pride as a member of HOBO NATION (someone wearing a HOBO NATION www.hobonation.org shirt) comes down to serve and comes face to face with the man who created the design they are excitedly wearing. We didn’t think of that when God first revealed the idea of HOBO NATION to us. We have watched as entire groups of visiting churches or others serving on the street, surround one of our “artists” once they find out what they can do, and ask to have their pictures taken with him holding up a shirt. Discussions have broken out where these men who spend most of their days having people work to avoid them, have old and young men and women, boys and girls, ask them the inspiration for or the meaning of their beautiful creations. They JOYFULLY share their response.

Many have written and told us that they were wearing a HOBO NATION shirt and it led to discussions on homelessness, faith, and humor, we love hearing that. YOU have to smile at the Dr/ Love design, RESPECT THE HOBO.

Some have scolded us via email or twitter because we use the word HOBO; most retract their comments when they find out that HOBO to us stands for HELPING OTHERS BRING OPPORTUNITY. We also point out that the original word HOBO is the abbreviation for the words HOMEWARD BOUND and was used to describe the men who would work their way back to their homes across the country….(see our original goal).

We wanted to share this special story that involves a homeless artist named Shawn, a sweet little girl struggling with a horrible disease, a church on a mission to LOVE LOUD, and a HOBO NATION shirt with a picture of a MENDED HEART.

First Baptist Church Of Woodstock GA has held their LOVE LOUD ministry to the community event for about 5 years now. This is an all out ministry to communities in GA where this very large church shows its heart for God’s hurting people and invests a large amount of money and a larger amount of time on projects to restore, help, encourage, renew, and most importantly love on as many as possible. HOBO NATION has been given the great opportunity to provide a LOVE LOUD shirt option for this event and the proceeds from this shirt go to back to work homeless programs, (the artist gets paid as well).

This year we had several beautiful pieces of work submitted as possibilities for the shirt, however a piece by Shawn was selected. We call it THE MENDED HEART.

We sell the shirts for this event on Sunday am and pm services and they go over in a big way. The first Sunday am we sold the shirts a lady came up to buy one, she commented on how she loved the scripture we applied to this design Psalm 30:2 O LORD MY GOD, I CRIED TO YOU FOR HELP, AND YOU HAVE HEALED ME. It spoke to her as her daughter Megan has bravely battled a disease since birth and this mom longed to see her daughter healed..She left with the shirt, we were grateful for the purchase and we went back to handling all the others anxious to get their LOVE LOUD shirts. The following Wednesday night I was told that this sweet lady took her shirt home. She showed it to her daughter Megan and Megan commented on how the heart was broken and ripped apart but that Jesus was represented as a Rose mending the heart. God used this encounter to start a discussion between this loving mom and her searching daughter and as the mother carefully shared the greatest truth ever told, Megan realized and understood her need for The Savior Jesus Christ and she prayed and asked HIM to save her. When we heard this story we just stopped and thought, “What goals does God have for HOBO NATION?” It may be that His goal was that Megan would receive the precious gift and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It may be that God wants us to raise up tremendous funds for homeless back to work programs and other programs we hope down the road, it may be that He wanted to see Shawn smile a beautiful smile when we shared this story with him. All we know is we are so grateful to be part of HOBO NATION and we truly hope you will want to be part as well.

We know that not everyone who supports HOBO NATION is a Christian, and we understand that this story may turn some off. That is never our goal but we really felt led to share this story and we hope you will still be part of HOBO NATION….
