clarification follows system_status…

system_status follows…

system_status:

All hobotrain network sites and databases were successfully migrated to new servers between 30 December 2009 and 12 January 2010. The bulk of this migration was completed ahead of schedule with few surprises. All nameserver changes will be finalized this week. Nameservers for hobotrain.net/network (incl. spur.hobotrain.net) have been changed and their propagation is complete with the unexpected result that although links to spur.hobotrain.net readily appeared in Google search results, those results at present point to my access domain rather than to the site directory. Testing (see change_logs://) continues on other hobotrain network sites.

Moving the hobotrain installation was and is an involved process with a moderate learning curve that needs to be completed quickly. It is the fruit of a sudden decision, necessitated by the realization that much of the hobotrain network project’s content is in violation of the Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) I’d agreed to when I opened my Web hosting account in early 2007.

I came to read that agreement again three weeks or so ago, on Christmas Eve, when I was up late waiting for Santa and browsing my Web host’s user-to-user support forums to see if I could help anyone with their web-mastering skills, and I came upon a topic (since deleted) in which a fellow customer (straightforwardly) asked whether it would be considered acceptable use to publish a piece in a photo portfolio that contained a partially nude figure that wasn’t intended to be pornographic and which displayed no genitalia.

The question received two responses, both expressing skepticism about our host’s willingness to serve any questionable content no matter the context, both leaving unsaid that simply by virtue of [his] going before [his] peers of [his] own volition to ask this question, this content-creator’s conscience was piqued enough for [him] to realize on his own that the image [he] proposed to publish must already be “questionable” and therefore prohibited. The second response, quite reasonably, I think, also suggested that the OP re-read the Terms of Service in order to help [him] make up [his] own mind about [his] question. It was reasonable enough, in fact, that I clicked on the link it contained to the Terms of Service, myself.

I read it beginning to end. It is a long document, longer than most in the hosting industry, and honestly, it left me pretty flat until … I came to this:

9. PROHIBITED USES

01. Breach of Terms and Account Termination. The uses of [My Web Host’s] Services set forth in this section 9 hereinbelow are prohibited. The engaging in any prohibited use as set forth herein by Subscriber or by any affiliate or subscriber of Subscriber (as determined in the sole discretion of [My Web Host]) constitutes a material breach of these Terms and will subject Subscriber’s account to immediate termination without notice.

…

04. Profanity. Profanity or profane subject matter in the site content and in the domain name are prohibited.

So that was it. It was like I suddenly realized what was going to happen when my fiancée found out that I’d been cheating on her. Brazenly. I realized that my relationship with my web host, in other words, and love them as I might, was fucked. It was over. Like that <snap/>.

Profanity’s always been a problem for me in the eyes of some people I’ve known, but I can’t help it. My whole family curse like sailors, and both my speaking and my writing are laced with it. And for the sake of a good web host, I guess I could probably scrub my language and my conscience clean and suffer none of my mania or my meaning being lost, but the more difficult problem for me, with respect to my web host’s Terms of Service, is that “profanity” is differentiated from “profane.” The profane relates or devotes itself to that which is not sacred and not biblical; to that which is secular rather than religious.1 Profanity dirties the figurative sheets, my web host and I both know, and sheets can be cleaned, but what is profane dirties the brand—an unforgivable affront that that must be dealt with quickly and mercilessly. I could dig it. And so, Christmas morning, I was on the run.

By dawn, I’d logged in to my hosting account to download a complete backup of my system, all of my site files, all of my databases and all of my email and email forwarders in anticipation of my account’s imminent lockdown.

Over the previous few weeks I’d begun to tell a few people that the hobotrain network project would be online at the first of the new year. That was too bad. For me, announcing an opening has almost always proved to be a stupid thing to do. In my experience, quiet openings, all word of mouth, is a much better approach. (But, when will I internalize this?) <del datetime="2010-01-26T03:53:40+00:00">In any event, where I thought I would be spending the holidays working mainly on content, polishing things, moving furniture and generally just honeymooning it up around here, I ended up out on my ass a little bit panicked. Was I angry at myself for picking the wrong Web host and putting myself in this position in the first place? Not really. I was going to move on at some point, anyway. At least I didn’t pick another well known, reputable and cheap shared hosting plan with the Terms of Service that says:</del>

<del datetime="2010-01-26T03:54:28+00:00">In addition, our servers and services may not be used for the propagation, distribution, housing, processing, storing or otherwise handling in any way lewd, obscene, or satanic materials.</del>

<del datetime="2010-01-26T03:54:28+00:00">Not only that, I wasn’t especially happy with my sites’ directory structures, you know, how they were set up. I wanted to move all of my sites but net/network into the root. To do that</del>

etc., etc.

end system_status..

clarification follows…

clarification: about:spur.hobotrain.net…

It’s no secret that net/network is on the brink of collapse. I’ve done everything possible to deflect the blame for this onto evolving Web standards and the ongoing browser wars, but the truth is that at some point it’s going to go down and I need to have an alternate site in place, although that’s only half of the problem with that website.

Face it, net/network is pretty much impossible to navigate, not because of Web standards and jacked up code, but because most visitors are either incapable of or uninterested in navigating the site; hence, spur.hobotrain.net. I don’t honestly think that by my creating this GUI mirror that more people will read more content, but at least an opportunity to be able to do that is there.

end clarification..

Thanks for visiting. I know that many of you are here because Rod took his site down for the sake of the limitations of a $5/mo. hosting plan and you clicked on his link from google.ca, but that’s alright—for all the help he’s given me with CLI2 for Wordpress, I’m happy to do us both the favor (and also to learn that a Digg front page halo event won’t crash my site).

I’ve written quite a lot about art and the entropic of Wordpress generally (and of this theme in particular) in various places on the hobotrain network and the upshot of my thinking is that although I am powerless in the face of that entropy, I am unwilling to abandon my work here, and am thereby left to appropriate the deprecation of my various scripts, themes, plugins, widgets and hacks into the larger hobotrain network project so that it survives long enough for the Tuttle saga to be fully told; and so too, to continue using CLI2 on this particular site until Wordpress and Web standards and the browser wars devour everything but my domain name.

I realize that day by day this site’s deterioration will demand more effort from visitors to hobotrain.net/network than I can reasonably expect any of them to be willing to contribute, so while exploring this site may be neither necessary nor possible, descriptions of its collapse will be (and in some cases, already are) published elsewhere on the hobotrain network as crises arise.

Anyway, I didn’t realize anyone was coming over, so sorry about the mess.

Cheers!

Updated 2008-02-04 14:43:16 by admin:

Thanks to Grant Dobbe, Nerd for hire, for all of the fine improvements to Tuttle’s Corner.

A day late and a dollar short as usual, but we’ll reopen before Spring.

End update.

poststatus follows…

Before we start, I’d like to give a shout out to the person(s) searching Google for ‘dermata fibroma.’

poststatus:

♁: This entry builds upon a topic I began in the WP forums and it is intended to provide more information about my WP issue both for the benefit of participants in the WP forums who may be able to help me out, and of friends of the hobotrain network in keeping with this site’s mission.

WP forums post:

Subject: All archives links returning same list of posts

Categories and monthly archives display the correct number of posts for a category or month in the sidebar; category and archive pages are associated with expected permalinks when they are selected, but, each categorical and monthly archive is only populated by my most recent posts, by date, in descending order.

I’m fairly sure the problem is in a theme file as I had this issue out of the box with my theme (although archive.php seems to be in order).

WP and all plugins are up to date. I’ve validated my markup; updated WP tags in theme files that have changed since 2.2; re-installed WP; deactivated/reactivated all plugins; deleted, reposted all entries; deleted and re-added all categories.

Any other ideas will be a help.

Sorry I’m unable to publish my site’s URI publicly, but I am happy to post any code people might be interested in seeing into a paste-bin.

Thank you.

(I always say thank you when I post in a support forum.)

poststatus continues:

In other words, the thing that is keeping me from going live with Tuttle’s Corner is that all of the sidebar links to Tuttle’s Corner’s various archives are broken. These include the Category links as well as the links to monthly Archives. This will not do, and until this issue is corrected, I am reticent about opening Tuttle’s Corner (the site) for business.

Updated 19 JUL 07:

I’ve spent the whole of the last nine days on this problem. I’ve tried all manner of things I have no prior experience in, and one thing I can say for my effort is that I haven’t fucked anything else up while I’ve been trying to get my links to work: I fixed all 71 w3c validation errors (including 34 on the clock); got the CSS to validate; learned how to index my databases; how to add divs to a stylesheet; how to update WP PHP tags and variables in my theme, and I tried the other troubleshooting steps described above but the problem with Category and Archives links persists; about the only thing I haven’t done in the past nine days is write any new posts, so two birds with one stone here…

Updated 21 JUL 07:

Do I expect any answers beyond those I’ve already received in the WP forums? No. No one’s even looked at the
archive.php
file I posted in the WP paste-bin. The only other thing I could think to do was to contact the author of WP theme I’m using at Tuttle’s Corner, and she responded by suggesting that I install the updated version of the theme which contained no bugs.

“No bugs” was an interesting way of putting it.

Indeed, when I installed the theme’s latest version, I found that Category and Archives links behaved as expected, but all of the other issues I’ve spent the last four months fixing were back again. It would have been nice if the theme author had just helped me with the issue I wrote her about rather than fobbing a new broken version off on me, but that’s as good a response as I’ve ever received from people I’ve written who have authored bits of open source for WordPress. Now, with the restaurant closing for August, I’ll probably have a bit more time to comb through the PHP files from both versions to find the problem. In the meantime, I’ve removed both the Category and Archives headings and links from the right sidebar and replaced them with a Site Map that is available from the navigation bar at the top of each page. The Category links don’t work from the Site Map either, but at least all of the posts and information pages are laid out by date and category in a list on one page.

End.

Type ‘help’ and press return for assistance; type ‘editing’ and press return for navigation commands.

Links to other hobotrain sites have been added to the net/network Welcome page. This change was effected because statistics show that kjdhsjh bijwd dh oih,.nxkjdd jkd;l hd’[pw, dh;dd3o2in.

The CLI setting for Use Help Message (check to use usr/share/doc/help.html, uncheck to generate command list dynamically) is being reviewed. The dynamic command list confuses some visitors who do not make the connection between the explanation for a command that is supplied in the dynamic command list and the need to enter that command in order to deploy it. The html Help Message simply describes (a more limited set of) commands in a list, which helps tamp down the expectation created by the dynamic list that clicking on a link associated with a command will cause that command to be executed.
additional notes:

In the haiku, the limitation of language is the object of a concern which is inconceivable to us, for it is not a question of being concise (i.e., shortening the signifier without diminishing the density of the signified) but on the contrary of acting on the very root of meaning, so that meaning will not melt, run, internalize, become implicit, disconnect, divigate into the infinity of metaphors, into the spheres of the symbol. The brevity of the haiku is not formal; the haiku is not a rich thought reduced to a brief form. The measurement of language is what the Westerner is most unfit for: not that his utterance is too long or too short, but all his rhetoric obliges him to make signifier and signified disproportionate, either by “diluting” the latter beneath the garrulous waves of the former, or by “deepening” form toward the implicit regions of content…. (Barthes, Empire of Signs, p. 75)

Following up on an item at: http://hobotrain.net/network/2007/06/29/290607/ …

The Clock -

People have asked me about the clock that is in the upper right hand corner of the page at tuttlescorner.com. They point out that it only shows the correct time if you are on the west coast, and that Tuttle’s Corner isn’t on the west coast. They ask me if there is some special significance to a clock that displays time in world cities relative to Pacific Standard Time. They ask me to justify my use of a clock that not only displays the incorrect time in four different cities, but uses more than its fair share of CPU cycles on people’s computers (especially if they’re on Firefox).

The simple answer is that I like the clock; I’ve looked at a lot of clocks, and this is the one I picked, even if it doesn’t show the “right” time for some people.

I’ll tell you a story:

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, but the second half of my life has been all New York. Am I a New Yorker? A few years ago, in a limo out to Kennedy being driven by a guy who’s lived in Queens his whole life, I get to explaining where I’m flying (L.A.), and why. Normal conversation for a drive like this. He tells me that when I got in to his car, he thought I was a New Yorker. He asks me how long I’ve been living in New York and I tell him, 17 years, but I’m not sure if that makes me a New Yorker, and he says, “17 years? Shit, you’re a New Yorker.”

So that’s it, really. That’s why I picked this clock: I’m still on L.A. time, New Yorker or not.

- We were offline most of yesterday (070707) and well into this afternoon (070807) for server maintenance. Thanks for your patience, and sorry for the inconvenience, but I believe that the improvements will have been worth the trouble.

- Welcome message has been changed to provide more information about how to navigate this site.

clarification follows…

clarification:

Over and above technical issues, delays are a product of philosophical questions: e.g., ‘How much is (not) enough?.’

I suppose that all four hobotrain network sites are as ready as they probably need to be for early visitors, at least in the context of what, in the restaurant business (which is the only business I know), we call a “friends and family” dinner. A friends and family dinner is a mock-up of a normal dinner service: the menu as it is printed is available; there is a full staff; the bar is stocked; there are enough linens, silver, plates and glasses for the evening: the only difference is that everyone who attends a friends and family dinner is treated as an invited guest rather than as a customer. That is to say, everything is on the house, which is in the spirit of the evening (and invites forgiveness of many of the things that are certain to go wrong the first time out). Tipping bartenders and wait-staff is the rule at this type of affair, but it’s not the law.

♨ Tuttle’s Corner: functioning as a GUI for net/network. Updated daily. ToDo: Find an end for the About Tuttle’s Corner pages.

I should mention that I’m both having and foreseeing a lot of issues with the theme I’ve selected for Tuttle’s Corner (in addition to my issues with the theme for net/network) and I have no doubt that over the next five or so years my chief battle will not be with inspiration or content for Tuttle’s Corner and the rest of the hobotrain network, but with entropy itself. This battle begins and ends with maintaining WordPress, I guess, and it extends to all of the open source add-ons that my sites are utterly dependent upon. With everything there is to keep in mind, I can’t help feeling that the whole hobotrain network project is a house of cards. But fuck it, I’m in.

I want to thank everyone for coming down to the river last night. It was a great turnout and, I think, a lot of fun. The rain chased a lot of people away after the fireworks, but in the end that meant we were able to get most of those who stayed in to Upstairs which made last night’s as fun a party as we’ve had at Tuttle’s Corner in a long time. It was great to host a bunch of people who don’t normally come by my place, and I’d like to thank them for causing almost no damage to my property.

Many, many thanks to The Good, The Bad and The Queen for going above and beyond in just making the effort to come here, playing for five times as many people as we’d planned on, and then, after their regular set, playing requests from the dance floor until 4 AM. Thank you, gentlemen! See you in London!

I will try to put together redirection rules so that all links lead to static pages rather than 401 or 404 pages where the destination site is not yet live, but don’t count on that happening too soon.
It’s nice to see how many people have come by since Tuesday. Most of them, or you, maybe, seem to have got around well, and that’s heartening. Of course, others didn’t stay long at all… I’m also happy to see that I’ve had visitors from 27 countries so far. Hello!
It’s not validating yet, but it’s much closer than it was.

I spent most of the day on the restaurant: nice article on the upstairs dining room; reiteration of issues with the clock; added a bunch of links to articles across the network (Intertext); caught up on the network screenshot gallery; put the little boxes back on the front page (left has an explication of the logo, right has a Roland Barthes quote which I’ll probably get rid of); added “Welcome to . . .” to “Tuttle’s Corner” in the left sidebar (friendlier!), and a number of smaller things. It’s very likely that Tuttle’s Corner and Monk Falls will be up and running within two weeks.

Le gôut des algorithmes ~ The taste for algorithms

He has never worked out real algorithms; there was a moment when he fell back on less arduous formalizations (but this moment seems to have passed): what seemed to be simple equations, schemas, tables, genealogical trees. Such figures, in fact, are of no use whatever; they are simple toys, the analogue of the dolls made out of a corner of one’s handkerchief: one plays for oneself: Zola, in the same way, makes himself a plan of Plassans to explain his novel to himself. Such diagrams, he knows, even fail to have the interest of locating his discourse under the aegis of scientific reasoning: whom could they deceive? Yet one plays at science, one puts it in the picture—like a piece in a collage. In the same way, calculation—from which pleasure was to be derived—was placed by Fourier in a phantasmatic series (for there are fantasies of discourse). (Barthes on Barthes, 100)

⎈ spur: you are here. Updated daily. ToDo: I was up all night thinking about Safari 3β and whether or not I can get things fixed here before October when Mac OS X 10.5 is released. I think many people would agree that there would be some poetic justice in hobotrain.net/network not being accessible to Mac users on the latest stable version of that platform’s native browser, but the fact is that I’m not going to revamp this site for Safari’s sake, even if I’m running 10.5, too. I quit using Safari too long ago to come back to it hat in hand now. I’m sorry. I just can’t.

They point out that it only shows the correct time if you are on the west coast, and that Tuttle’s Corner isn’t on the west coast. They ask me if there is some special significance to a clock that displays time in world cities relative to Pacific Standard Time. I have no answer to these questions at the moment.

⌦ postdelete.com: hobotrain network out-takes deletions anomalies. Updated as necessary. ToDo: A new category called “replies (unposted)” which contains a collection of Tuttle’s unposted replies to threads in third-party online forums has been added under the heading of anomalies. These unposted replies were originally intended as starting points for topics at postdelete.com in its earlier iteration. Perhaps they can serve a similar function in their new context.

Because these replies went unposted, it is my attorney’s contention that they do not fall under the rubric of the terms and conditions of use of any of the third-party sites for which they were written. All references to the parties to whom these posts may have been addressed have been (or will be) redacted or altered in order to render those parties unidentifiable. If you feel that you have been positively identified in one of these posts in spite of my efforts to cloud your identity, or if you sense that you are able to identify someone in spite of my efforts, please let me know via the Contact form at postdelete.com and I will take steps to rectify the situation to your satisfaction. (We have the same guarantee of satisfaction at the restaurant, by the way, in that if you are displeased with what you have been served, we encourage you to get the attention of a staff member as quickly as possible so that we can get you something else, right away, and on the house.)

We understand that Tazerac® is similar to Accutane® (isotretinoin), but we have been assured that we will almost certainly not experience severe depression or thoughts of suicide as side effects of its use. Dermata fibroma \ ankle.placeofinterest still crusts over but does not completely heal. Cortisone injections may be having some effect. There is no keratosis \ nose.placeofinterest. Eye exam is still pending as is a change in insurance carriers. All eye and dental care on the present plan must be completed in the next 30 days. Eighteen cigarettes / day.

⎈ net/network: you are here. Updated daily. ToDo: Maintenance: back-end; follow up on problems with WP 2.2(.1), Safari 3β and CLI theme.

It’s nice to see that some people have dropped in to see how things are going.

On the back-end, I got some help with the Apache server yesterday. Now all extant hobotrain addresses (.com, .org, .net extensions w/wo www) are 301′d here. This is useful for many reasons, but it was necessitated by the discovery that commands were being aborted at www addresses. Enabled FastCGI on all hobotrain network sites. This and a caching system I’m working on will help things move more smoothly down the line.

Also, I contacted the CLI Google Group to mention that something broke with latest or second latest WP and Safari 3β, as well as OmniWeb 5.5. When I checked Rod’s blog the next day, I read that he was going into the hospital. Not having known this beforehand, I regret having bothered him with trivialities, though I appreciate that he responded to them, and I hope all is well or just better healthwise.

♨ Tuttle’s Corner: functioning as a GUI for net/network. Updated daily. ToDo: Fucking hell. (I may add to this entry later.)

✈ Monk Falls: a living fiction. Updated Wednesdays. ToDo: There is a lot of scanning photographs and photographing artifacts to get through, but with once weekly entries, that should be easy to schedule in.

Which reminds me: I don’t know if I’ve described the manner in which I plan to publish Monk Falls; if I have, it probably bears repeating:

Monk Falls is (essentially) a travelogue; its outline can be imagined as being constructed of a map, an itinerary and a box of colored push-pins. Its narrative is the string that will be wound around the pins until all of the pins, and all of the points on the itinerary, are connected together. Up to now, the map is hung, the pins are in and ten or twelve little pieces of string are strung. A good start!

At the same time, Monk Falls is a fiction, as is all of the content on the hobotrain network. Even this. The difference between Monk Falls and any of the other sites on the hobotrain network is the degree of reflection (and/or the perception thereof) Monk Falls requires to move its story forward:

Whereas the other sites are more or less written on the fly, Monk Falls is a little more chess-y; entries at monkfalls.com are posted with a far greater number of conditions placed upon them than entries elsewhere on the hobotrain network, and they are more likely than entries elsewhere on the network to be moved, replaced, re-written, or expunged at any moment for an ever increasing number of reasons, though I fully expect that the inertia of the work will propel it more toward an increase in content than in any number of other directions.

Regardless of the amount of content that is posted at monkfalls.com at any moment in time, I hope that the process of developing that content——plotting the story, placing the episodes and the conversation it holds with the narrative that comes out of Tuttle’s Corner——will be as interesting as the story being told there.

⌦ postdelete.com: hobotrain network out-takes deletions anomalies. Updated as necessary. ToDo: Just a little more clean-up. postdelete will be online by the weekend.

Notes: The Chowhound article is garbage, and I’m leaning toward deleting it completely and forgetting it ever existed. The interview with Leonardo™ is very funny, but many of the best bits are not likely to make it out of the editing bay as Leo talks a lot of shit about people who I may or may not like, but who, as far as I know, are a little too quick on the speed dial to their attorneys for me to want to upset them this early in the game.

–TO BE DELETED AFTER 90 DAYS–

Hi, Friend.

Thank you for your interest in the hobotrain network. I regret any delays in responding to your questions about what I’ve been up to here, but believe me when I tell you that there has been a fair bit of excitement and upheaval at the restaurant lately—changeover to the summer menu, staffing issues and so on—and for that (and because that’s where I make my money) I’ve been running a little bit behind. But all that’s unimportant now:

As of today, hobotrain.net/network is online and available.

As you may or may not know, the hobotrain project began about ten years ago as a traditional literary piece (ink, paper, etc.) which was intended to be a novelization of the journals I’d kept during my travels in South and Southeast Asia (ca. 1990-94 and 1996) and on my couch tours of New York and Los Angeles (ca. 1987-97). In addition to being eager to tell that story, I was, at the time, also very interested in creating a piece that somehow captured the growing sense that I existed at an early but discrete phase in literary history wherein the transition from the printed to the electronic word as the primary material and means for the creation and dissemination of literary works threatened to render me and my writing Weltanschauung obsolete before my career had really begun.

Like many of my contemporaries, I’d been trying to find ways to link pages, themes and characters together non-linearly so that the book could be read in ways other than cover to cover. For several years I struggled mightily and mainly in longhand with ways in which I might emulate hypertext in a printed context, especially with respect to page navigation; and, also like many of my contemporaries, I ended up no closer to resolving this problem than I had been at the moment of its discovery.

When I acquired Tuttle’s Corner in December of 2003 and I found myself in the unique position of having to report to work every day, my writing time was immediately and radically curtailed; my flat became a place in which to live and entertain rather than the more familiar place in which I simply slept, bathed and made art; I began spending a lot more time at my computer, and eventually, and out of necessity, I came upon the solution I’m experimenting with now in which the hobotrain network is entirely Web-based, its narrative interwoven among four separate sites:

- hobotrain.net/network (net/network), which describes the maintenance and status of all of the hobotrain network sites and catalogs changes and additions to their content.

- tuttlescorner.com (Tuttle’s Corner), which serves both as a graphical interface to net/network and as a receptacle for items which are related to the back-story and the aftermath of the events surrounding the monk’s fall.

- monkfalls.com (Monk Falls) contains the monk’s journals which are the substantive portion of the hobotrain network narrative as well as its reason for being.

- postdelete.com (postdelete), which is, among other things, the repository for items which have been deleted or otherwise disincluded from hobotrain network sites.

Over the next several days, postdelete, Tuttle’s Corner and Monk Falls will be brought online, and while they are readied, their status will be reported upon here.

Thanks again for taking the time to visit the hobotrain network. I’m glad you could make it.

Kind regards,

Tuttle

Be patient. Early boarding is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s nice to be able to find your seat, stow your bags and settle in in a leisurely way; on the other, opportunities to experience discomfiture and degradation increase in number and by magnitude with every passenger who boards after you. Try to ignore late arrivals, if you must, by keeping your eyes down. And please take the time to read the help pages.

⎈ net/network: you are here. Updated daily. ToDo: Still on for Thursday. Updated schedule follows.

I had hoped to go live with all sites on 21 June. This isn’t possible. Rather than waiting to go live until all four sites are ready, each site will go live when it becomes ready. net/network can go live immediately, but I am leveraging the 21 June date to polish things up a bit more and to take a few days to anticipate and consider problems that may arise as the hobotrain network project gains momentum.

One issue net/network may face will be a slew of bad links as a result of moving the other sites into the root folders on their servers in order to prettify those sites’ permalinks before they go live. It will take a few hours to update each of these sites’ databases to reflect their new link structures and to check the links between pages here and elsewhere on the network, so there will be a little downtime and probably a few 404 pages for you to deal with. I realize that as the sites are slowly rolled out over the course of the next month it may appear that bad permalinks are an ongoing problem on the hobotrain network. Don’t believe that.

The second site to go live will be postdelete. This may also happen as early as Thursday, 21 June, but it will more likely be late in the week of Monday, 25 June. Monk Falls is also ready to go. Because Monk Falls is to a great extent contextualized by entries at Tuttle’s Corner, Monk Falls and Tuttle’s Corner will go live simultaneously during the second week of July, 2007. The Tuttle’s Corner static page has been updated to reflect this. There is no static page for Monk Falls (monkfalls.com).

Additionally, a version of Global Acknowledgments will eventually be available at spur/ack (in addition to tuttlescorner/ack). It is a very long list and it (will) contain/s a number of outside links as well as links to pertinent entries on other hobotrain network sites. Any links emanating from the list of acknowledged people and entities may be entirely tangential to any relationship between the hobotrain network and those people and entities and/or to any reason/s these people and entities and their contributions to the hobotrain network project may be acknowledged herein.

postdelete.com was initially conceived as a compendium and a clearinghouse for posts made by Honest Joes and trolls alike which have been deleted (actionably removed) from corporate sponsored support forums across the interweb and also as a place for general discussion about moderating practices and the limits of free speech in corporate sponsored forums. For a number of reasons, both practical and imaginary, the postdelete project has been divested of resources and that domain, along with the essence of its original mission, has been folded into the greater hobotrain network project.

Effective immediately, postdelete.com exists as the repository for items which have been deleted or otherwise disincluded from hobotrain network sites.

Items at postdelete.com which are a product of that site’s previous mission have been deleted from postdelete.com, annotated, and re-posted as new articles.

As I might have mentioned, I’d been working for the better part of two years trying to obtain permission to use the image, Highway Diner, Old Route 66, Winslow, Arizona by John Margolies to represent the exterior of Tuttle’s Corner (which is located neither in Winslow nor on Route 66). I have no idea what led me to the Alicia Patterson Foundation website where I first saw the image. A brief look at that site’s content suggests that its stories weren’t the draw, which tells me that it’s unlikely I would have spent enough time browsing the site to have dug up the page containing John’s work and leads me to believe that I must have arrived there from an outside link to which I’m unable to track back; in any event, I’m certain that I saw the image before it ever occurred to me that I’d own and operate a place like Tuttle’s Corner.

Did the image I found give me the idea for Tuttle’s Corner, then? I don’t know. Neither do I know whether I would be sued if it turned out that the image was the father of the idea that all I ever wanted was a place to sit down to write whenever and wherever I liked, to be served coffee and food at no charge and to see so many people going out of their way to visit me for a change.

globalstatus:

net/network: you are here. Updated daily. ToDo: Content is king!

I have been in touch with several of you wrt helping me test the hobotrain network before it goes live next month. As I mentioned to you, I would like to commence with any testing a couple of weeks before we go live. Because of the unremitting interruptions to my work-life flow (this), and out of the frustration these interruptions have engendered, I have resolved to reconsider whether to set a date by which to go live with this project, and to carry through with that promise, regardless of the state of the sites when that day rolls round. This gambit may be helpful in the long run in that it may force me to save face by completing the many unfinished posts I’ve created across the other three sites so that the foundations of the overarching narrative is laid and the scaffolding of meaning might begin to rise. This site is, of course, immune to the risks inherent to that strategy as it exists simply to convey the network’s status; so as long as anything is to be seen going on here, there will be evidence that the project hasn’t been abandoned.

Licensing issues: I haven’t checked today’s mail, but I’ve been eagerly awaiting the invoice for a license from the photographer who created the Tuttle’s Corner exterior image. I’m fairly sure we agreed to terms in an email exchange over the course of the past three weeks, but it’s been a week since he said he’d mail me the paperwork and now I’m getting a little edged because a lot of work has gone into designing the Tuttle’s Corner site around that building. I’ve also attempted to contact typogenerator.net about the images their software created for postsdelete.com, although I think that as long as that site remains non-commercial, I won’t be in breach of the terms described at typogenerator.net.

Because it is impossible to entirely divorce a site from the software on which it runs, a new WordPress category will be created to enable us to filter and differentiate site-specific issues from software-related ones. While software related issues are interesting and as much a part of the site’s meta-narrative as any other theme, the software merely empowers me to carry though with this project in a certain way, it wasn’t the software that gave me the idea. That said, I’ve been trying to catch up with all of the authors of the themes and plugins we’re using across the network to make donations for their work and I’m surprised at how few of them without obvious tip jars on their sites have gotten back to me when I’ve written them to ask whether and how to submit a contribution. I would like to take the opportunity to thank James Kelly for his Themed Login plugin while I wait to see if he writes me back. I installed it on three of the four sites yesterday and they’re just what I was looking for.

net/network: You are here. Updated daily. ToDo: Applied update to Rod McFarland’s CLI2 theme yesterday. All good, though the scrollbar is gone the ‘cloud’ command is now working. I’ve decided to go the help.html route because it’s going to make navigation easier for many more people than the few who would be amused by the dynamic command list. \ Disengaged the listhosts command. \ Created a draft of a Global Acknowledgments page. This may be linked within <p> tags at the bottom of the Welcome message.

postdelete.com: art of the troll. Updated weekly (Monday). ToDo: Installed a second category ordering plugin, but it’s clunky (also, it only seems to allow me to indent right sidebar items) and I will be returning to MyCategoryOrder soon. It doesn’t work with all themes, but where it does, it’s useful and allows me to avoid Javascript dropdowns. \ Content is in sore need of rewriting. \ About page needs to be written.

Monk Falls: a living fiction. Updated twice weekly (Wednesday and Sunday). ToDo: Everything is going well here. I look forward to spending two weeks or so before launch just adding content.

Tuttle’s Corner: functioning as a GUI for net/network. Updated daily. ToDo: This is the biggest news, really. I ‘ve settled on the New Yorker theme by miloIIIIVII. There has been a lot of work to do to strip out some of its abundant features and to sand down its edge. Most of that’s done, although I can still do without the supplied h2 and date icons. I would also like to brighten up the #660000 in the h3 and h4 headings. Another issue with this theme is that it doesn’t even come close to validating. The Flash clock gives off 30 - 40 errors by itself. I’m aware of ways to clean up the mess made by the <embed> tags, but my attempts thus far have failed. (Also, the particular clock I’m using shows the time as three hours ahead. This can be explained away, I think, by stating that the times are not meant to represent the correct time in those cities, but to show what time it is in those cities if you’re in Tuttle’s Corner.) \ As importantly, we’ve decided that Tuttle’s Corner will function as the default GUI for this site where one may be called for. Tuttle’s Corner won’t contain so much information on the status of the hobotrain network that net/network will be redundant, but it will link to the most recent posts across the network.

notes:

We’ve decided against selling advertising on the hobotrain network for the time being.

We are expecting a major WordPress update in the next couple of weeks. We have no clue what effect(s) the new version (2.2) will have on our sites, but do not anticipate any issues so great that they will delay our embarkation.

In some cases, images will be posted as placeholders for as yet unposted entries. The About page needs to be updated because issues with the Contact page in Safari and OmniWeb have been fixed. I have also realized that LightBox won’t work if Javascripts are disabled and a note to that effect should be included. We have also changed the color of the text in the Verification field to FF0000 so that people who have trouble seeing colors are better able to read that field.

Added the option to type ‘list’ to see entries because I sense that most of the people who will visit this site will not see the wonder in navigating the hobotrain network via the scenic route while they have a few minutes between phone calls and meetings. I’m going to see about inserting these images after <more> tags, and perhaps configure post pages so that the entire post is present after the <more> tags. Added new favicon.

postdelete: art of the troll. Updated weekly (Monday). ToDo: Everything. It looks fine, but the content is really a bunch of placeholders and ill-conceived conceits (except the Terms of Use page which is a template). As things are today, I think that there are too many images on the front page. There really isn’t a lot of call for images on postdelete, so the sense is that they’ll have to come down.

Monk Falls: a living fiction. Updated twice weekly (Wednesday and Sunday). ToDo: Several posts were put up before Lightbox 2.2 was installed, so almost every image behaves differently when clicked. Standardized behavior of images is an immediate goal. There are many more posts and elements of posts ready to be uploaded. One thing I would like to do is create a links template to have a catchall page for navigating to any Monk Falls entry. The About page is incomplete.
