It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I've always been one to notice records. Especially sports records. How many championships a team has won; who has a record for this; who has a record for that. You name it, I'm interested. Stats are fascinating to me.

Sometime ago previously I had mentioned about The World's Longest Comment Thread which was being populated on the Facebook Discussion Page. Well guess what. In just over 2 years it has been recognized as the World's Longest Comment Thread on a photo. For now, that's pretty darn cool.

Thanks to all of you who have participated. If you havent', stop by and check it out. You might make some friends or learn something. You'll also get a chance to be silly or just vent. It's a good place to showcase your business too.

Truth - My Life As A Carnie

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Had a friend one time find out that his wife was cheating on him...with a carnie (carnival worker). Needless to say, he was crushed. The fact the guy was a carnie added insult to injury. It was more embarrasing to him.

My friend is a very nice guy [AKA The kiss of death label], smart, successful, very funny. He's a great guy actually...everyone likes him - trustworthy. He's not as drop dead good looking or smart as me of course (naturally), but he's a catch. If I were gay, I'd consider him a good person to date. I'm not gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just wanted to reassure you that I'm not, for those of you curious.

So it was very tragic and sad that she cheated on him to end the marriage. My friend felt he got a double whammy because of the guy's profession. A doctor? A lawyer? A blogger? A cop? Sure these are understandable. But a Carnie? Come on!

Every time I go to the carnival (or festival) I look at the Carnies and wonder who they are. I wonder why they work there. I wonder what history lies behind those tattooed laden tough guys? I wonder what those people who yell at me to throw darts at balloons do for fun? What got them the job in the first place? Who interviews carnies? How long is a carnie a carnie? How many carnies are there?

I usually try to avoid them, because they are hounding me down to throw darts at a balloon filled wall...or shoot baskets in a very small hoop.

Now I'm drawn to them out of curiousity. Maybe they are zombies?

No I was never a carnie, but that would make a cool title of a book or movie.

Too many youngsters grow up without getting their hands dirty or learning how to use a screwdriver.

Truth - Wasted Speeches

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. How many speeches do you think you've heard in your life? Many. Probably more speeches than you can remember. So many speeches on television, the news, the radio, history. Speeches that you heard at graduations, weddings, churches, and even parties. Speeches from movies, from books, from school.

How many do you remember? I have a few friends that can repeat the speech from Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men" completely. I know some people memorize speeches. But all in all, that's still only a a few to a handful of speeches that you may recall. Lines from famous speeches are easy. But other speeches, not so much.

I was a best man a few times for some weddings...I do recall the crux of those speeches. I've given speeches in school, but I don't remember them at all. I've spoken at funeral, but don't really remember them either.

So my gathering is that speeches are for the most part, a shotgun approach. Unless you have some photographic genius mind, you will only remember a few of them.

But look at it this way. If you hear a speech, then get motivated, moved, or inspired by it...how long before you forget it? Very quickly. The effects of most speeches are short lived, are they not? They are. If they weren't then speeches that come after speeches would never be need.

Has what's been said already been said? Who is listening? Who cares?

Truth - Being Prepared

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. If you know that tragedies exist and can happen...can you not be stronger and more prepared for them when they do?

I'm not going to say it stands to reason that knowing bad things happen will soften the blow. I am asking the question - If you know that you could die, that death could hit a loved one, that you could lose your job, That you could get sick, have a breakup, be in an accident etc. If you know that any could be the case, couldn't it help you deal with it from the get go?

Most things, if you think ahead then you will be prepared to handle them. I know that I need to keep a can of gasoline handy for my small engines. If I don't, then I'll be short handed when I need them. Being prepared for the worst had to account for something.

If you know that tragic events occur shouldn't it make you stronger? No, not stronger as a person...but stronger to deal with things. Isn't that possible? I hope so, but I'm not sure. What do you think?

You see, these questions might have answers. You might be able to search for them on the net. I highly doubt you'll find an accurate number for any of them. That being the case, isn't that annoying?

Every time you see a coaster from here on out, this is going to enter your brain - FOREVER. You'll smirk. You'll frown. You'll touch the coaster. You'll be ticked off, like a bad song stuck in your head...that you are now thinking about coasters.

No, I'm not influential. No, you are not that easily swayed (unless you are a democrat or redhead). It's just because these questions needed to be asked. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Interesting how the traffic goes from up to 10,000 daily readers to just 200 per day on average.

What happened?

Well Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others decided stop advertising because of my content. Well one of them said it was because of non unique visitors. The rest are based on "content".

Content?

Facebook cuts my traffic from 5000 per day to 1000. Well that's based on me not wanting to pay for my posts. Silly as that is, that's their prerogative. But content?

So how does one go from so many to hardly any? My content really? Let's see. Which of these content issues would cause a problem with someone?:

But I would have no way of knowing because no one sees this! If it were trending south, then I could have seen it coming. But, just like your psycho ex, you don't see it coming and BOOM! - you are cut off.

This isn't your problem, it's mine. Interesting...when I had the traffic, I didn't worry about it. No that there is hardly anyone reading, I'm a bit concerned. Was it something I said? Did they see your picture on my friends list and run away?

Truth - Store Suckers

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. So I go to this department store. I won't say the name, but it rhymes with racyees. I don't like going to them for many reasons. Nonetheless I walk in and I feel trapped.

I am trapped because sappy music is playing. I am trapped because there is no semblance of lines. Everything is a mess. There are no aisles. There are just displays everywhere. It is a giant maze.

What's that? Yes there are 3 floors of this. I am told that certain floors cost more. Lame if you ask me.

So I want to buy a pair of sexy shorts. I see some. Wait, these shorts are $80. What? I'm not paying that for shorts. What the hell. Disappointed, discouraged that it costs so much. So I decide to walk away.

Wait, there's another display of shorts. These though are $50. Still, that's nuts. Sorry, you re an idiot if you pay for name brands.

That's just it though. I've come to realize this is a store for idiots. Because clothes are grouped together by name brand and not by type. Really? What marketing fool thought this was a good idea? When I want to buy shorts, can't I just go to the shorts section?

Oh wait..you mean there are people that want to shop and do shop by name brand? Oh [roll my eyes, shake my head].

I could easily be a perky or a slappy. Hey to each his own. I just want more substance (no offense meant if you are a slappy or perky). I want more depth and soul. Even with the simplest of ideas, gestures, whims...it has to be soulful. You dig man? Feeling groovy. Hip man.

I think the problem is, there are people that do things, the right things and that is not good enough. Doing good is rarely praised. What is praised is the odd, the evil, the obnoxious, the crazy. Why?

Truth - The Not So Smart Phone

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Eating breakfast at the local greasy spoon there was this family of adults sitting next to me.

Here is what I noticed. They didn't speak, unless it was to order food. The three of them just stared at their smart phones while they ate.

Now if they spoke I missed it, since I was focused on a very nice pair of bacon strips in front of me myself. However when I looked they just were texting, reading, and typing away.

It's possible they were speaking with each other via smartphone:

Mom: How are your eggs?

Son: Great

Dad: Pass the jelly

Mom: Say please

Son: Me too

Dad: Please

Mom: Butter?

That's how it looked, that's probably how it went down.

On a side note it just seemed so sad they had nothing to talk about the entire breakfast. Hey, I love my phone too...but there's a time and place for it all you know?

Seems rude, seems kinda impersonal. Seems you can't enjoy bacon if you are texting away on the bacteria machine.

The moral of the story, eat breakfast with interesting people so you don't have to ignore them on your phone.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Exclusion. Who do you invite to a party? Who do you leave out? Do you invite people that never show up? Do you invite people that never invite you to their parties?

Who do you invite to a wedding? Where is the line drawn? When it comes to funerals, don't you just make one announcement, and for the most part assume most if all will show up?

So there is some discrimination going on depending on the venue. It's based on what? Location? Relationships? Age? Grudges? Perhaps you just don't want to hang with this person...so you just avoid them at all costs?

I know people who avoid all parties, all events, so they don't have to be obligatory to others, or expect people at their events. Partly it is financial...partly it is anti-social. This sounds like a Miss Manners or Martha Stewart deal.

It's a bit stressful on my end. When I go to a party, even if I don't throw it...I'm always wondering if so and so got invited. I'm always wondering why so and so wasn't invite. I'm always wondering if they knew about it, didn't show up, or just ignored the invite.

There has to be a line, I just don't know what that comfort line is. Awkward kicks in when you see pictures of an event that you weren't invited to. Or when others see pictures of an event you didn't invite to (stop posting pictures!).

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Hey Facebookers...you need to be heard don't you? Why? Why does every single thought that comes across your brain need to be said on your Facebook status update?

I'm watching the hockey playoff game, and low and behold everyone has a comment about every single shot, goal, penalty. They then have a post game rah rah rah chant. Then they have during the game roller coaster shouts based on the highs and lows.

When the game is done, they show their disapointment, mixed in with that slappy optimism

for the next season or game.

Why?

Why not save one post for all of that instead of treating status updates like a chat room? Better yet, go join a chat room and save the rest of us from your pollution. I beg you. We beg you.

Just because we are friends with you, doesn't mean we want, need, or like every single update - especially when there are 20 to 30 per day. Hey how about 1 to 3 per day? Can you do that? Can you even imagine that?

Next time before you post a Facebook status update...stop...take a deep breath. Ask yourself if what you are going to post is remotely funny, interesting, or informational. If it isn't, then don't do it. If it is, make sure it can't be misunderstood or come across as annoying.

Would it be something that is embarassing if your boss read it? Would your kids be proud of your Facebook legacy? Hey how about going back and cleaning up your old status updates and delete them, instead of polluting the world. You think it is free to store that stuff?

Truth - Question The Questions

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Does anyone try to find out the meaning of things? Do you try to figure things out? The cause and effect of it all? Does it matter to you? Do you wonder why things are the way they are? Do you wonder in amazement or have a general curiosity? Do you care or just go with the flow?

Are you caught up in the rat race of life, your hobbies, your interests, the news etc...that you never figure out what makes the roses smell so good?

Often you are told to stop and smell the roses. OK so you do that...wonderful. But why do the roses smell good? Why do they look good? Why do they make the world a better place? Why do we need more roses? What makes a rose a rose by any other name?

I wonder only if the engineer brain looks at such things, or if only the terminally creative mind that bothers to even ask?

That itself begs the question if you ask more questions, will then you'll miss the point of it all? If you ask about the rose, then you miss the point of the rose? If you don't ask, will then you take the rose for granted and not appreciate it?

So many questions...when you do ask? How do you ask? should you ask? Bet you never thought of asking so many questions.

Truth - The Bondo Lady

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Many many many moons ago as a child, I used to go with my family to visit this old lady. We weren't sure how old she was, but I guess she was about 150.

She was very nice, very personable. She always wore a dress. No matter the time of day or season, she was always in a dress. She always had a smile, and about 123 crooked teeth to boot. She had super gray hair. I mean it was gray like bondo. It wasn't like she had old hair from age, it was like she had spray painted her head that color. [note to self- call Crayola to get bondo color crayons].

She had a large flower garden. The flowers were huge. Roses...red, white, and reddish white from what I can remember. I remember walking in her yard and not saying much. Bored out of my mind, because she was old and there were no toys to play with. Nothing to do.

I just had to listen to the older folks talk. I didn't know who she was, other than when we visited her, the people we were with spoke in reverence to her...as if she was some sort of saint. At one time old folks talked to even older folks with respect. I assume she was a saint.

Dang she made great cookies though. I remember her cookies, the respect she got, and her flower garden...oh yeah and the bondo hair. Saint Bondo...not too many of those around anymore. Doesn't anyone bake cookies?

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I've long been under the impression that college kids are kids. I mean from the age of 6 to 22 roughly, they are in school most of the time.

Tis why I don't like the magic numbers of 18 or 21 when it comes to adult stuff...like military duty or drinking age limits.

If the human brain doesn't fully develop for most until the age of 28, then how in the world could you trust someone at the age of 20?

Really all of a sudden you are going to turn on the light upstairs between the ears and get it?

Yes I know there are exceptions, old souls, and those who have experienced many things in their youth. I'm saying for the most part and as a rule.

It's party why when I see a group like Young Republicans or Youth for the Obomber I just shake my head. These people don't know what they are rooting for. They are just picking teams. They are fresh and idealistic. Hey there's no crime there, but I can't take them seriously.

I think perhaps, no maybe, yes, ok sure, that I didn't take myself seriously at that age so how could I entrust such measures on another? Not gonna happen anytime soon.

Sorry youngsters. I support you, I wish I was you, I envy you...but you don't get it. It's ok too!

Truth - When You're 64

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. There's a song by The Beatles called "When I'm 64". I really like that song. It's simple, and genuine. I believe it is the first song Paul McCartney ever wrote.

It's mostly about wondering if your significant other will still love you when you get old and stuff. It's about asking for reassurance. At the time it was written seeing old people not getting along was often questioned.

Once John Lennon was asked in a Rolling Stone Interview:

Without sounding vain or remotely narcissistic...is not what you are doing right now creating a scrapbook of madness? The degrees of madness vary though. What kind of madness are you creating, so that when you are 64, 74, 104...you can look back and smile. Even if you don't want to look back, at least let those around you get the chance.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Today I'm honored to have a guest blogger post, who has a talented way of conveying the message. I love the words, the flow, and more importantly the story. Give it up for the purveyor of veritas Chris Felt from Cantrips and Canticles.

For the last few months I've come seen my mother rapt to the television screen. She's obsessed with the Jodi Arias trial. Every few days she reminded me of the latest bit of gory gossip. Unfortunately she's not alone. I was over her house today eating lunch while she was watching the trial again. Outside of the courthouse in Arizona, hundreds of gawkers had gathered to hear the final verdict in this case. As I watched the crowd I was filled with revulsion. People were waving at the cameras, cheering and vying for the spotlight to capture their 15 seconds of fame. People had even brought their children to celebrate in this distasteful American past time. Again, it made me want to vomit. Shortly after the verdict was read the word had reached the crowd via social media. The crowd erupted into applause. A news reporter asked a woman her thoughts and she responded "Thank you Jesus!" As if there weren't a more antithetical statement ever made.

But that's the deal. It wasn't antithetical at all. The modern incarnation of the hypocritical pseudo-rectitude filled blowhard puts the hype in hypocrite. Move over New Testament Jesus, say hello to your vengeful father. All of the pleas for justice for the victim were nothing more than a facade worn on the gleeful faces of the wicked. They all really gathered together to be on TV and to coalesce with other non-working fat ass pieces of shit. Good job Jerry Springer fans. You've evolved no more than an amoeba's ass since the public hangings of the 19th century.

Contrast this with the reaction from the Charles Ramsey, the light-hearted savior of the 3 kidnapped girls from Columbus, Ohio. He responded to a scream, saved a few girls and called 9-11. Was he full of pride at what he had done? Not really. He was just surprised that it had happened right next door. Even his neighbors have confessed to feeling shame for not having discovered them sooner. Ramsey and his neighbors that have given hope to so many have accidentally behaved better than hundreds of the lazy, bleacher sitting, train wreck magnets in Arizona.

Emulate Charles Ramsey or the Pork Collective. The choice is yours.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Aside from my local sports teams, I have other favorite teams. They are usually teams that perform well, or have overcome some adversity as an underdog. There are of course teams I can't stand, such as any Chicago, Miami, or New York no matter how good they are.

I don't like the Bruins or Red Sox, but I really like the Patriots. I love their system. I don't care for the Kings, but I like the Dodgers. I love the Steelers, but loathe the Pens.

I like most Big Ten teams, but never ever Ohio State. I can't stand Notre Dame, but Rutgers doesn't bother me. Actually the Cubs don't bother me, because they are lovable losers...and so many people buy into the contrived hype surrounding them - its very cute.

I hate the Lions by the way.

My new favorite team is the University of Calgary Dinos. I am not sure why.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I can never pin point the amount of time one person can have away from their significant other in a successful relationship.

When both people in a relationship have responsibilities and interests there has to be some sort of acceptable line. I don't know what that line is, or that is is standard for everyone.

I am of the belief that the more time you spend with the other person, the better off you'll be. But I've seen that fail. Not sure why, but I've seen it. It just kinda makes sense that it should work though.

Then there is that whole absence makes the heart grow fonder deal that you have to account for. While I think that is true, wouldn't it be better to just hang out instead purposely spending time apart?

I know guys that golf alot, that watch alot of sports, play poker, go to the bar and travel. Yet their significant others are cool with it. Yet I've known some that go ballistic if the guy watches a game every one in a while with his buddies.

Obviously "to each his own" applies, but there has to be some magical amount of time together keep and maintain a healthy relationship. It's very confusing to see happy couples who hardly see each other and vice versa. How do people do it? How do they cope? How do they decide? Granted you choose how to accept or not accept things with your own tolerance levels...but something creates those levels. What is it?

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I was at a department store and I noticed something. Actually it is something that drives me absolutely crazy. Crazy I say. It is women finding something ,then going up to the counter and making a big deal about it.

They always have to put things in layaway. Or they have to talk to the cashier for 5 minutes about their purchase. Or they go to the counter to have them hold something. Ever see the rack of stuff to be tried on or held?

It's huge.

Why? Because they can't make up their mind. They have to try on everything. They have to buy

everything. They have to return everything. They have to try everything on then not buy it. It's madness.

Then of course they have to whip out a million credit cards to get to the store card or coupons. Or they have to whip out the check book, then spend 5 minutes writing the check out as if they are the only one in line. The shopping experience of the female species is an oddity. It defies logic, reason, and slaps time in the face. It slaps time as if it were some chauvinist pig.

Do you know what is even funnier? The amount of women who say they don't do this, or that they aren't like other women. Spare me! Tell your mother ship that you need a new message.

STOP IT. You are all the same! It's a trap. A time trap. I'm not sure why, but you are all in on it. Some Amazon Venus code or something made to wear us down.

It's working.
