While the opening of Peak 8 first is a departure from recent history, it was the traditional opening before Peak 9 opened in 1981, and the original ski resort in Breckenridge was called the Peak 8 Ski Resort. But, don’t think this return to its roots is just nostalgic – it’s to prepare for the newest and largest event Breckenridge Ski Resort has ever hosted.

“Opening Peak 8 first this year gives our mountain operations team every advantage to prepare the mountain and venue for our largest event ever, the AST Winter Dew Tour. The Winter Dew Tour co-sponsored by the Town of Breckenridge, BRC, runs from December 18 – 21, will feature freeskiing and snowboarding disciplines for both men and women with over three hours of live coverage on NBC, two hours on the USA network and four hours on MTV and MTV2,” said Lucy Kay, chief operations officer for Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Breck’s roots might be at Peak 8, but Peak 7 continues to impress. Founded in November 2007 by employees from Copper and the Town of Frisco, the fund supports projects that promote environmental sustainability through education, scientific research or community-based initiatives in our mountain community.

The Copper and Frisco Environmental Fund’s Spring 2008 grant cycle kicks off now with a focus on providing funding for youth (ages 5-18) environmental programs or projects in Summit and Lake Counties. Projects should have both environmental education and action components and those which have a positive impact on the environment and the potential to be replicated or continued in future years are encouraged. Finally, projects benefiting the community, not just the organization requesting funding, will also be given favorable consideration. Potential projects include: reducing waste through composting or zero-waste initiatives, actions to impact a school or organization’s green practices and projects that positively impact the environment in our community. The resort started officially tracking snowfall data during the 1975-1976 ski season.

Initially Heavenly planned to close for the season on Sunday, April 20 but with snow pack that’s 23 percent higher than average, officials made the call to give excited powder hounds two additional weeks of spring skiing. The resort is now set to close Sunday, May 4.

Call Saunders Travel at 501-744-6353 or email us at Ski@SaundersTravel.com to schedule your trip and be a part of a record breaking season.

Saunders Travel is a Full-Service Travel Concierge.
