Kitchen Cabinetry in a New Light

It is rare that we consider kitchen cabinetry to be an additional source of light, but that may just be the defining characteristic of these compositions from Leicht, Germany. Recessed spot and down-lighting is maximized by the reflective nature of high gloss lacquering and aluminum shelving, which is incorporated into a clean, modular aesthetic that lends itself to the covert demands of kitchen storage. Leicht also demonstrates a willingness to experiment with bold colors, either in the application of lacquered segments or in feature walls that serve as a dramatic backdrop for the units, and whether you love or hate it, it certainly contributes to the individuality of the space.

In a departure from a sleek façade that has not the need for handles, the cabinets featured in this image are altogether more reminiscent of a French farmhouse kitchen, albeit still a modern interpretation. The choice in flooring supports the exposed industrial display of the kitchen utensils, which hang atop a meeting of worktop and wall. It is interesting that Leicht has decided not to isolate the worktop in the typical kitchen island fashion, but viewers will notice the openness and sizable impression of the space, just as they will, the way in which this allows the honest flooring material to be showcased in its best light.

Finally, this dramatic burgundy and black combination offers an alternative to a palette that is more commonly associated with kitchens. However, such a combination relies heavily on the greater space to provide the necessary natural light, which is why it is best suited to the setting pictured here.

Living Rooms Alive with Inspiration

Private realms of the home, more intimate in nature, such as bathrooms and particularly, bedrooms, are spaces in which one might experiment with style, color and form, but communal areas of the home not only serve as the foundation for the tone of a home’s interior style and provide a space in which one might receive guests and commune with people, but can also serve as a space in which a home’s inhabitants might commune with the external environment. The living rooms that make up this collection are varied and desirable, but those that immediately follow are examples of how a living room can serve as an internal space that is still very much a part of its landscape.

Unlike those that came before it, this image and the images to follow have chosen highly elemental materials over glass walls to convey the omnipresence of the natural world. Materials such as stone and as the case is here, wood, surround the inhabitants in an earthy quality that is complemented by a roaring fire and the occasional, carefully placed indoor plant, but offset by modern lines and creative lighting.

In keeping with a palette that will comfortably translate to the different natures of each of a home’s rooms, the final images have adopted a predominantly neutral color scheme and preferred to incorporate colorful accents through styling. Styling, in both of these spaces, also hints at what lies beyond the abode’s external walls with the addition of organic pendant lighting here, and in the case of the image to follow, a large white Buddhist bust and orchid centerpieces.

Nordic Interior Design

Scandinavian, Scandi, Norse Minimalism…there are as many names for Nordic interior design as there are variants of it. Characterized by white walls, light wooden floors, a constrained hand in styling and an abundance of natural light, the Nordic discipline has students the world over and this collection features two that have mastered it. Curiously, they are both from Vietnam. First to be featured is a striking project from AT. Design & Viz. The use of a monochrome palette is dominant in this typically Nordic space and wintery motifs in styling and lighting take obvious inspiration from an original Nordic landscape.

This image marks a shift in concept due to a shift in designers. This, and that which is to follow, is the work of Hoang Minh who shows a preference for slightly more contrast in fundamental materials, such as darker wood flooring and boldly black-framed windows. Once again a motif that speaks of a Norsk winter is represented in the black and white print that hangs above the grey tones of the soft furnishings.

Hoang Minh, while still true to the Nordic style, expands the ethos to include different fundamental materials such as concrete and steel and takes an altogether warmer approach to styling befitting a hip industrial café. The walls are peppered with rustic wooden cabinets that house multi-colored reading materials while windowsills and corners are adorned with indoor plants.

Both modern and contemporary design philosophies are regularly criticized for a lack of warmth, but a decidedly organic approach to accessorizing and a preference for golden-hued lighting render the previous spaces more inviting than most. In contrast, the space to follow relies on an ambience created by swathes of natural light that spills in unencumbered by heavy window treatments. Though views from the terrace suggest an urban landscape, this visualization would not look amiss in a coastal environment and hints at the marine world through its employment of blue accents and sun-bleached blonde wood flooring, which is complimented by the choice of dining setting and framing of its featured wall hanging.

This white symmetrical kitchen, from its splash back feature wall of many segments to its dining table thoughtfully topped by a fruit bowl of continuous wire lines, lies distinctly juxtaposed to that which follows it: an open plan kitchen, dining and living space dominated by a textural navy wall that spans its length and serves to accentuate the indoor greenery which intensifies set against the dark background. This type of experimentation with color blocking has been prevalent to a greater extent within spaces of a commercial nature and the final submission from Triple D, a bold, red accented bistro-style space speaks to its origins.

A Unique Addition to the Global Property Market

The Eastern suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand’s capital city, are characterized by a culturally diverse population, a subsequently vibrant urban scene and as is typical of New Zealand, a picturesque landscape, but to say that this property currently marketed by Sotheby’s Realty, is a unique addition to the area and indeed, the global property market, would be an understatement. A significant selling point is the tropical garden and manicured lawns that surround the modern structure that is constructed from materials selected to meet the demands of a temperate climate. An exotic but modern first impression is successfully conveyed by the palm-flanked driveway and corrugated aesthetic of the home’s exterior.

The glass paneled accordion doors open into an expansive space that has quite literally turned the concept of open plan living on its head. Large elemental tiles that evoke a rocky coastline cover the lower level where one might ordinarily expect to see hardwood floors, which have in fact, been relocated to the ceiling. Twin skylights illuminate a dynamic use of the upper level, which is accessed by a floating overpass complete with a ninety-degree lookout where, like a deckhand in a crow’s-nest, the resident can survey their domain.

In both communal and private areas of the home, window seats are a popular inclusion. Minimally styled in white linen, this vantage point serves to frame New Zealand’s famously varied vegetation, which is also celebrated inside the home by featuring several species of potted palms and ferns, such as that which inhabits the far corner of this, the master suite.

Workspaces with Views that Wow!

The conventional wisdom also says that a change is as good as a holiday. However, not all professions allow for the mobility depicted in this image of a travel writer’s dream. Having said that, one should seek to utilize the versatility of laptops and mobile technology, and apply this principle to spaces within the home. Flexibility in one’s approach to working from home and a willingness to stimulate the flow of creative juices by embracing spaces both indoor and outdoor will do much to make the combination of domestic and professional a harmonious one.

Workspaces such as this outdoor setup may not be expensive to create, but they do rely on the grace of the climate in which they exist. A similar energy can be realized by ensuring that the worker’s line of sight when sitting is level with a conventionally positioned window and unobstructed by elaborate window treatments and unnecessary decorative items. Functional pieces such as basic office supplies and equipment, one should endeavor to conceal or place at a level lower than that of the line of sight in the interest of maximizing the view and minimizing distractions.

Not everyone needs a computer at their workplace. This flower trader in Dal Lake seems to agree.

Homes with Indoor Ponds

From Singapore, Colorado, Mumbai, Perth and across the globe, these individually stunning projects feature an element borne out of ancient Eastern philosophy that has been embraced by the modern Western world: water gardens. Synonymous with tranquility and wellbeing, water gardens do more than soothe the soul by making a contribution to interior spaces, that is both wonderfully aesthetic and to a significant extent, textural. Notably, in the depictions to follow, water gardens, more often than not, inhabit what may otherwise have been dead space within a structure, such as those areas that lie beneath floating staircases.

AZD takes the utilization of potentially dead space one step further by adding a glass floor atop the decorative body of water that lies beneath the stairs, creating a thoroughfare that serves as residence’s main entry access. This space, like many to follow, is thoughtfully styled with living elements that take the form of water reeds and potted palms, which hints at an underlying ethos of tropical modernism that is seen in greater detail throughout this collection.

Elements of tropical modernism can be found in this submission from Pulltab Design, which was considerably influenced by the work of prolific architects, Geoffrey Bawa, Carlo Scarpa and Richard Neutra. The shallow steel pool in this space can be relished from the mezzanine living area and lower level, while whimsical styling in the form of a model sail boat draws the eye to the pool and the overhanging green wall above. This is subtle tropical modernism in its classical form. It is in essence, comparatively formulaic and academic when one considers the nature of the space to follow, which takes the aesthetic of tropical modernism quite literally, though careful to retain a level of functionality through the incorporation of stone stepping platforms that float in the feature of the composition.

Richly elemental in their approach to materials, the design team has taken pains to incorporate bronze, steel and walnut, and finished this furniture grade plywood wall in a high gloss lacquer that makes for an attractive and interactive feature, which is effectively softened and offset by the textural green wall that hovers above an equally reflective water feature.

Being such a dynamic space of varied levels and focal points, both imposing and recessed, the very nature of the space is one that plays on the creation of shadows, so the black-framed floor to ceiling windows that inhabit the white lounge serve a very real function, in addition to their obvious aesthetic appeal.
