Reddit user u/loumou19 faced that problem with a Henckels 18/10 stainless-steel pan. Scrubbing with a regular sponge and a Scrub Daddy hadn’t removed the residue, and the owner wanted to avoid steel wool over concerns about scratching the surface.

A suggestion involving baking soda changed the approach. Instead of adding more pressure, the method uses water and heat to loosen the burnt layer before another attempt at cleaning.

What Baking Soda Does to Burnt Residue

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a mild alkaline compound that can help loosen some grease and cooked-on food deposits. Its fine particles also provide a gentle abrasive effect when used as a paste.

Burnt residue presents a different problem from loose grease. Food exposed to high heat can form a hardened layer that bonds to the cooking surface, making it difficult to remove with dish soap and a sponge.

Water helps soften some deposits, while heat speeds the process and reaches the residue across the bottom of the pan. Baking soda supports that cleaning action, reducing the need to rely on force from scrubbing.

Why Heating the Mixture Makes a Difference

The suggested method involves covering the burnt area with water, adding baking soda, and bringing the mixture to a gentle boil.

As the water heats, it penetrates deposits that have dried onto the metal. The alkaline solution can help loosen certain greasy residues, allowing some of the burnt material to lift from the surface.

After the pan cools, a non-scratch sponge or wooden spatula can remove deposits that resisted washing before.

The Reddit owner returned to confirm that the baking soda method worked, reporting that the residue came off with much less effort than the earlier scrubbing attempts.

How to Use Baking Soda on a Burnt Stainless-Steel Pan

Cover the burnt section with enough water to keep it submerged during heating, then add one or two tablespoons of baking soda.

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil and let it simmer for several minutes, watching the water level so the pan doesn’t boil dry. Turn off the heat and allow the pan to cool before emptying it.

Use a non-scratch sponge or wooden utensil to lift softened deposits, then wash the pan with dish soap and rinse it. Stubborn areas may need another treatment rather than harder scrubbing.

Related:Putting baking soda in the oven: what it’s for and why people leave it overnight

Why the Method Won’t Work on Every Pan

Stainless steel can tolerate simmering water with baking soda, but cookware with nonstick coatings, exposed aluminum, or special finishes may require different cleaning methods.

Baking soda can discolor aluminum, while abrasive scrubbing may damage some coated surfaces. Check the cookware manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before using the method on anything other than uncoated stainless steel.

Burnt deposits also vary. Some soften after one treatment, while thick carbonized layers may remain attached and require further cleaning.

The useful change isn’t adding more baking soda or scrubbing harder. Heating water with baking soda gives stuck-on residue time to loosen before the sponge touches the pan again.

The method, called soil solarization, works by warming moist soil beneath a sealed sheet during hot weather. But when the plastic covers ground around an established tree, the roots beneath it can face the same heat intended to destroy the weeds.

Reddit user u/Legit_Salt tried the method around a Kentucky coffeetree growing in a narrow planting strip. After a week beneath the plastic, temperatures dropped from summer heat to around 70–84°F, leaving the gardener concerned that the treatment would not get hot enough to work.

The responses raised a different problem. The plastic was covering soil occupied by the tree’s roots, and increasing the heat could damage the plant the gardener wanted to keep.

Clear Plastic Covered the Weeds Beneath a Kentucky Coffeetree

The gardener lived in USDA Zone 6b and wanted to remove stubborn grass and weeds from a planting strip before adding new plants. The soil contained a high proportion of clay, and the area received direct sunlight during the morning and evening.

Clear plastic had been placed over the weeds to trap solar heat, with the intention of killing the existing growth without digging it out. After temperatures dropped, the gardener considered replacing the sheet with black plastic.

The problem was already present beneath the covering. Previous attempts to remove the weeds with a shovel had struck tree roots, while tulip bulbs growing below the surface made digging another concern.

u/Legit_Salt

The Heat That Kills Weeds Can Damage Tree Roots

Soil solarization works by allowing sunlight through transparent plastic and trapping heat near the ground. During hot summer conditions, temperatures in the upper soil can rise enough to damage weed seeds, young roots, and certain soilborne pests.

Tree roots are not confined to the ground beside the trunk. Fine roots responsible for absorbing water and nutrients spread through the upper soil, often extending beyond the canopy.

Covering that soil with plastic can expose living roots to prolonged heat. The danger depends on the temperatures reached, treatment duration, soil moisture, and root depth, but a tree’s established root zone is not an appropriate place to use solarization.

One commenter warned against heating soil over tree roots, prompting other gardeners to recommend suppressing the weeds without raising the soil temperature.

The distinction matters because the plastic does not target weeds alone. Its effect depends on heating the covered ground, including any living roots within that area.

The Gardener Chose Cardboard and Mulch Instead

Several commenters recommended covering the weeds with cardboard and adding mulch on top. This approach blocks sunlight from reaching the grass without using the concentrated solar heat required for soil solarization.

Cardboard can suppress existing vegetation as it breaks down, while an organic mulch layer reduces new weed growth and helps moderate soil moisture and temperature. The material should remain clear of the trunk and exposed root flare rather than being piled against the bark.

The gardener updated the Reddit post to confirm a change of plans: the plastic treatment would be replaced with cardboard and mulch, and planting would wait until the following year.

No damage to the Kentucky coffeetree was reported in the discussion. The case illustrates why a weed-control method intended for empty planting beds can become a risk when used over the roots of established trees and shrubs.

For open, sunny ground without existing woody roots, soil solarization remains an option. Around trees, hedges, and mature shrubs, weed suppression should avoid heating the soil that supports the plants.

For Lori of Dining-Delight, the old pumpkin provided the starting point for a black-and-white Halloween tablescape. She surrounded it with black lanterns, birch logs, bats, skulls, and small orange pumpkins, using buffalo-check fabric beneath the entire arrangement.

The table also holds an unexpected detail: plates purchased for Christmas became part of the Halloween place settings, with their black tree silhouettes fitting the darker decorations.

An Old White Pumpkin Became the Centerpiece

@dining-delight

The large ceramic pumpkin has a carved floral pattern instead of a traditional jack-o’-lantern face. Light shines through the openings, while strands of artificial spiderweb stretch across its surface and trail onto the table.

Black spiders cling to the white ceramic, including an oversized one positioned beside the gold stem. The contrast gives the pumpkin a Halloween appearance without changing its original finish or covering the cutout design.

The largest spider has a textured body, segmented legs, and red eyes. Its legs spread across the curved pumpkin, with webbing gathered around the stem and beneath its body.

Birch Logs and Black Lanterns Surround the Pumpkin

@dining-delight

White birch logs lie across a black table runner beside a dark metal lantern. Artificial webbing stretches from the lantern over the logs, catching on miniature pumpkins, a skull, and a small spider near the front edge.

The pale bark connects with the white pumpkin while giving the black decorations a contrasting surface. Orange glitter pumpkins sit between the logs rather than forming a separate arrangement.

@dining-delight

One black rat sits on a small white ceramic pumpkin beside a skull with an open mouth. Dark berries and another glitter pumpkin fill the space between the logs, while loose webbing crosses the objects and extends toward the table settings.

Black Bats Turn Candleholders Into Halloween Decorations

@dining-delight

Black metal bat silhouettes hold white pillar candles above the runner. Their spread wings stand out against the window and dining chairs, with webbing draped across the metal and connected to the lantern beside them.

The candles add height beyond the pumpkin without another large centerpiece, while the bat shapes introduce Halloween imagery above the smaller decorations scattered across the table.

@dining-delight

The candle rises behind the bat’s head, leaving its wings visible on both sides. Thin strands of cobweb cross the metal silhouette, connecting the candleholder to the web-covered objects below.

Christmas Tree Plates Found Their Way Onto the Halloween Table

@dining-delight

White scalloped dinner plates sit beneath smaller plates with black rims and tree silhouettes. Although the patterned plates were purchased for Christmas, their monochrome design works with the Halloween tablecloth and black accessories.

Buffalo-check napkins repeat the tablecloth’s pattern, while black-handled cutlery and dark glassware continue the same palette. The tree design provides a botanical detail without adding another Halloween character to the plates.

Dollarama Pumpkins Became Place-Card Holders

@dining-delight

Small orange glitter pumpkins from Dollarama hold guest-name cards above the dinner plates. One displays a card marked “Lori,” with a miniature skull beside it and a fuzzy black spider resting on a white napkin ring.

The orange pumpkin stands out against the black-and-white setting, connecting each guest’s place to the smaller pumpkins scattered among the centerpiece decorations.

The Finished Table Combines Halloween Decorations With Buffalo Check

@dining-delight

The full dining table brings the decorations together around the white pumpkin. Black lanterns and bat candleholders occupy the runner, while birch logs, rats, skulls, and orange pumpkins fill the spaces between them.

Buffalo-check fabric extends beneath every place setting, creating a repeated pattern across the table. The white ceramic pumpkin remains the tallest central object, with spiderwebs connecting it to the decorations on either side.

Rather than replacing her old fall centerpiece, the creator changed its surroundings with Halloween pieces and reused dinnerware. The ceramic pumpkin remains recognizable beneath the webs, but the finished table has a different character from the neutral fall arrangements it once suited.

The recommendation has a limit: it describes a temporary measure, with no established duration or guarantee that spiders will avoid every treated area. A strong smell does not show whether an entrance has been blocked.

The step that remains is checking and closing the gaps around doors, windows and pipework. Spraying the surrounding surface leaves those routes intact.

What the Vinegar Advice Covers

One pest-control guide proposes eight parts vinegar to two parts water for use around crevices, sills and doorways. It presents the mixture as a short-term deterrent and says other precautions are needed.

That supports describing why people use the spray, rather than promising a spider-free home. The guidance provides no controlled comparison showing how long protection lasts or how results differ between species.

Inspect the Frame, Screen and Door Seal

Start at the window where a spider was noticed, checking for torn mesh, spaces around the frame and joints where it meets the wall. At doors, inspect the weatherstripping and the gap beneath the closed door.

Openings around pipes and exterior wall cracks deserve attention too. Extension guidance recommends repairing damaged screens, replacing worn weatherstripping and sealing access gaps to discourage spiders from entering.

Look beyond the spot where the spider settled. A sill may be where it was seen, while the opening sits elsewhere along the frame.

Match the Repair to the Opening

Damaged screening needs repair or replacement; a worn door seal needs weatherstripping suited to the door. Use an appropriate sealing material for gaps that should be closed, leaving required drainage and ventilation openings unobstructed.

Include ground-level windows and foundation cracks in the inspection. Sealing suitable gaps in these areas is an established part of reducing spider access to a home.

A recurring sighting gives you a place to investigate, but it does not prove the nearest window is the route inside.

Keep the Result in Perspective

Spider numbers around a home can be reduced, but extension guidance does not consider making a house spider-free a practical goal.

Treat the vinegar suggestion as a limited claim about deterrence. The inspection has a more concrete outcome: finding damaged mesh, worn seals or an open joint that can be repaired. Those defects remain worth addressing whether you use the spray or skip it.

White cabinets covered one wall of a 1957 kitchen, with a gas stove squeezed between tall storage units and a refrigerator standing beside it. The house still had its original cabinetry, while a tiled countertop added decades later occupied part of the room. Storage was limited, counter space was scarce, and an opening toward the adjoining room left another section of the kitchen without much purpose.

@matt10187

Instead of ordering replacement cabinets, Imgur creator matt10187 built his own using plywood and poplar. He bought appliances on sale and sourced the sink, cabinet hardware, and countertops from IKEA, bringing the reported renovation cost to a little over $5,000.

The project involved removing the original cabinets, opening sections of wall, building new storage, and installing a farmhouse sink, butcher-block counters, and dark slate flooring. The finished kitchen has more work surfaces and a different layout, but the most interesting part is how the unused spaces became part of the new design.

The 1957 kitchen still had its original cabinets

@matt10187

The original cooking wall had tall white cabinets beside a freestanding gas stove, with smaller upper cabinets above the range hood. A white refrigerator occupied the remaining space, leaving almost no counter between the appliances.

The cabinet doors had raised borders, black round knobs, and a finish that matched the stove and refrigerator. Although the storage reached close to the ceiling, the arrangement provided little room for food preparation.

The pass-through occupied a wall without useful storage

@matt10187

A wide pass-through connected the kitchen with the adjoining room, with a narrow ledge beneath the opening. A small microwave stand sat beside the windows, while the floor area below the pass-through held a trash can and pet bowls.

The opening offered a view into the next room but left a section of wall without built-in storage. The renovation would introduce a cabinet and countertop beneath it, using space that had previously remained open.

Demolition exposed the plumbing behind the sink wall

@matt10187

Removing the original lower cabinets and tiled countertop exposed sections of framing beneath the window. The sink plumbing remained visible, while broken tiles and wall material covered the floor.

The upper glass-front cabinets were protected with plastic during this stage. Their position beside the window remained part of the new arrangement, while the lower section was cleared for replacement cabinet boxes and a different sink.

The stove wall was stripped before the new cabinets went in

@matt10187

The former cooking wall shows the marks left by the removed cabinets, including horizontal lines across the plaster and an opening exposing the framing behind the range position.

The refrigerator remained beside the work area during construction. The cleared wall provided space for new cabinetry designed around the replacement stove, microwave, and refrigerator.

Plywood cabinet boxes formed the new sink run

@matt10187

New plywood cabinet boxes were installed beneath the window, with open compartments awaiting doors and drawers. A butcher-block countertop extended across the units, interrupted by a white farmhouse sink with an exposed front apron.

The sink was positioned beneath the existing window, with a curved metal faucet mounted behind it. Building the base cabinets allowed the dimensions to accommodate the sink and adjacent work surfaces without ordering a complete fitted cabinet package.

The pass-through received a cabinet and wood countertop

@matt10187

The empty wall beneath the pass-through gained a new base cabinet with drawers and open storage compartments. A butcher-block surface extended across its top, providing another preparation or serving area.

Beside it, a tall plywood cabinet was assembled to add vertical storage. The construction photographs show the cabinet frames before the white doors, drawer fronts, and finishing trim were installed.

A microwave cabinet was built into the cooking wall

@matt10187

The replacement microwave was positioned within the new upper cabinetry, above a white subway tile backsplash. Open cabinet boxes surrounded the appliance during installation, showing how the storage was built around its dimensions.

The tile extends across the wall beneath the cabinets, replacing the plain surface behind the original stove. The new microwave arrangement also frees the surrounding wall for enclosed storage.

Beadboard cabinet fronts completed the sink wall

@matt10187

White cabinet doors with vertical beadboard panels covered the new plywood boxes, while curved silver handles replaced the original black knobs. The base cabinets frame a stainless dishwasher and the farmhouse sink beneath the window.

The butcher-block countertops remain exposed on both sides of the sink, introducing a natural wood finish against the white cabinetry and subway tile.

Glass-front cabinets remained above the new work surface

@matt10187

The upper cabinets beside the window have glass doors displaying dishes and glassware. Beneath them, the new base cabinets provide enclosed storage and drawers, with a stainless dishwasher positioned between the left counter and sink cabinet.

The backsplash follows the countertop around the window wall, while narrow open shelves occupy the space beside the upper cabinets.

A built-in bench replaced the empty space beneath the windows

@matt10187

The corner beneath the windows gained a built-in bench beside the cabinet installed under the pass-through. White vertical paneling covers the bench front, while the adjoining cabinet has drawers, lower doors, and a butcher-block top.

The new arrangement uses the wall for seating and storage without closing the pass-through. It also removes the need for the separate microwave stand that previously occupied part of this area.

Dark slate tiles replaced the original light floor

@matt10187

The renovation replaced the light-colored floor with dark slate tiles featuring gray, charcoal, brown, and muted green tones. The installation photograph shows the square tiles arranged in a grid, with spacers maintaining the joints.

The slate introduces a darker surface beneath the white cabinets and wood countertops, creating contrast across the room without changing the original window positions.

The finished cooking wall gained storage around the appliances

@matt10187

The completed cooking wall has tall pantry cabinets on the left, a stainless gas range beneath the microwave, and a stainless refrigerator on the right. White cabinets extend above the appliances, with crown molding connecting the upper units near the ceiling.

A short butcher-block counter sits between the stove and refrigerator, while another counter occupies the opposite side of the kitchen. The tall cabinet provides storage where the original arrangement had a narrower collection of doors and compartments.

The before-and-after shows what $5,000 changed

@matt10187

The original kitchen had white appliances, limited work surfaces, and cabinets dating to the home’s construction. The finished room has new cabinetry made from plywood and poplar, stainless appliances, butcher-block counters, a farmhouse sink, and slate flooring.

The homeowner reported spending a little over $5,000 by constructing the cabinets himself, buying appliances on sale, and purchasing the sink, countertops, and hardware from IKEA. The renovation was completed around 2012, before the project was shared on Imgur in 2014.

The finished kitchen retains the home’s main walls and windows, but the new cabinet arrangement makes use of the former pass-through area, adds a built-in bench, and provides more storage around the cooking appliances.

MB Carpentry Ltd installed the solid maple in-frame cabinetry during a major refurbishment in Jesmond, working with Bernard Interiors and Datum Build. Farrow & Ball’s paint covers the main cabinet faces, while oak shelving and interiors carry a rich Mink stain.

That contrast becomes more apparent as the photographs move through the kitchen. Painted panels surround the cooking area, a lower oak section changes the island’s profile, and closed doors within a display cabinet conceal another working counter.

Drop Cloth Gives the Cabinet Frames Definition

@mb_carpentryltd

The island shows the paint across broad end panels, narrow frames, and recessed doors. Shadows outline the joinery, while the muted color keeps those details visible beside the pale worktop.

Above the hob, white walls meet a Drop Cloth mantel shelf and matching corbels. The distinction lets the cooking surround stand out without introducing a dark painted feature into the room.

Warm Metal Connects the Painted Doors to the Oak Floor

@mb_carpentryltd

Long brass-toned handles cross the island drawers, picking up the warmer notes of the herringbone flooring. Against Drop Cloth, the metal reads as part of the room’s palette rather than a sharp accent.

The large Belfast sink sits within the higher work surface, accompanied by Quooker and Kangen taps. Paneled fronts continue beneath it, keeping the cleanup side consistent with the surrounding cabinetry.

A Lower Oak Section Changes the Island’s Character

@mb_carpentryltd

At the far end, the countertop steps down onto a stained oak section with open shelves. Books and ceramics occupy the recesses, giving this part of the island a display role beside the dining area.

The change in height separates it from the sink and prep surface. Its exposed grain also introduces a darker material at the center of the room, where painted cabinetry might otherwise dominate the view.

The Cooking Surround Holds a Small Oak Recess

@mb_carpentryltd

An oak-lined niche sits inside one side of the hob surround, with two shelves holding spice jars close to the cooking surface. Its dark interior creates a small break in the pale wall, framed by timber that connects to the island’s open shelving.

Across the back, veining runs through a broad slab beneath the concealed extractor. Drop Cloth outlines the shelf above it and the drawers below, giving the stone a defined setting.

@mb_carpentryltd

From the side, the counter continues beyond the surround into another cabinet bay. Narrow glazed cupboards flank the cooking area, adding vertical divisions above the long drawer runs. Double ovens occupy a separate bank of cabinetry farther along the wall.

Matching Panels Bring the Fridge and Freezer Into the Room

@mb_carpentryltd

Full-height Fisher & Paykel refrigeration sits behind doors finished to match the rest of the kitchen. Smaller cupboards above, a molded crown, and a continuous plinth give the appliance bank the appearance of fitted joinery.

Here, the broad painted surfaces make the color easier to read against the white ceiling trim. Drop Cloth provides a muted transition between that trim and the warm wood underfoot.

A Display Dresser Has More Behind Its Center Doors

@mb_carpentryltd

Illuminated glass cabinets hold stemware, bottles, and serving pieces on either side of a closed central cupboard. Matching paint, drawer fronts, and handles make the entire unit read as one dresser.

The solid doors interrupt the display with a quieter surface, giving little indication of the equipment behind them.

@mb_carpentryltd

Opening those doors exposes an oak-lined breakfast station with a built-in coffee machine, shelves for cups and canisters, and a counter beneath. Lighting reveals the grain inside, bringing a warmer tone into a unit whose exterior matches the kitchen.

The doors let the owners conceal the breakfast equipment while leaving the glass-fronted collections on view.

The Pantry Extends the Palette Into a Separate Workspace

@mb_carpentryltd

Oak shelves with curved brackets wrap around the pantry, with integrated lighting falling across jars and the counter below. Wicker baskets occupy open compartments around a wine cooler, replacing closed upper cabinets with storage that can be seen at a glance.

A toaster and chopping board give the counter a prep function alongside ingredient storage. Painted base frames connect this room to the main kitchen, while the shelves make stained oak the dominant detail.

Would you choose Drop Cloth for kitchen cabinets, or keep white and bring warmth through wood and hardware?

From the front, each circle frames the next, pulling your eye toward the planting at the far end. From the side, that tunnel disappears into separate curved bands, so the same feature gives you two distinct views.

Rust-colored panels behind fine grasses make their stems stand out, while tall folded sections rise between small trees. Metal supplies the shapes that catch your attention; orange, yellow, purple, and white flowers fill the spaces between them.

Steel Rings Create a Passage for the Eye

Successive circles frame the gravel and greenery beyond, with each opening appearing smaller as it recedes. Their lower edges disappear into the planting, so the sequence reads as part of the ground rather than a sculpture placed on a pedestal.

Orange flowers mark the foreground, while taller purple stems cross the openings. Those interruptions keep the view from becoming an empty tunnel, giving the eye several distances to move through within one narrow space.

A Side View Breaks the Tunnel Into Separate Bands

From an angle, the aligned openings separate into overlapping curves. Broad metal surfaces become visible along the sides, exposing the depth that the front view compresses into concentric outlines.

A tall rectangular panel stands beside the rings, adding a solid shape next to their open centers. Flowers occupy the gaps between both forms, with gravel continuing beneath them instead of dividing the sculpture from the planting.

Upright Metal Adds Height Between the Trees

Tall folded sections rise above the grasses, their angled faces catching different amounts of light. Narrow gaps between them preserve glimpses of foliage, allowing the vertical forms to stand out without becoming a continuous wall.

Their reddish-brown surfaces echo the rings below, connecting pieces of different heights through color. Slender tree trunks provide a second set of vertical lines, but their branching crowns spread beyond the metal’s straight edges.

Fine Grasses Become Clear Against Solid Panels

Pale seed heads can disappear against dense foliage, but the broad rust-colored panel gives them a backdrop. Individual stems and branching sprays remain visible across its face, turning a fine-textured plant into a feature.

The panel stops below the tree canopy, leaving foliage visible above it. Along its base, yellow flower clusters, purple blooms, and small white daisies break up the straight boundary between metal and gravel.

Concrete Blocks Introduce a Different Kind of Weight

Rough pale blocks sit among the planting, with worn surfaces and irregular marks contrasting with the thin edges of the metal panels. Their low, horizontal forms keep the composition from relying on upright structures alone.

Open rings remain visible behind them, creating a change from solid foreground objects to see-through shapes farther back. Gravel fills the spaces around both, allowing small plants to emerge close to their bases.

A Shallow Bowl Brings the Detail Down to Ground Level

Water collects inside a rust-colored bowl tucked beside orange flowers and fine stems. Its curved rim repeats the circular forms elsewhere, but at a scale that rewards a closer look.

Set below the flower heads, the bowl adds a reflective surface among the dry textures of gravel and metal. Surrounding plants soften its placement without hiding the opening.

Small Wheel Rewards a Closer Look

Between two broad panels, a spoked wheel rests near the ground, partly surrounded by stems. Its compact circle repeats the larger rings without competing for the same view.

The position creates a second discovery beneath the taller planting. A viewer drawn toward the panels can find the wheel after noticing the grasses and flowers around it.

Thin Metal Edge Keeps the Loose Planting Contained

Along the lawn, a narrow metal strip draws a firm boundary around the gravel bed. Plants can lean across that line, but the change from grass to stone remains clear.

That restrained edge gives the larger sculptures room to dominate without adding another bulky border. Would one ring create enough interest in a backyard, or is the repeated sequence what makes the view worth exploring?

Hannah, the furniture artist behind @thelittlefurnitureroom, had planned an ombré finish but doubted whether it would work across such a large piece. She tried a single peach shade, then decided the result needed the color blend she had pictured from the start.

Using Toodaloo, Pumpernickel, Fox, and Vermillion from Ingilby Paints, she created a sunset effect that moves from cream through peach and orange to deep red. Small gold-toned knobs finish the drawers without interrupting the gradient.

Orange pine gave every drawer the same finish

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Three small drawers stretched across the top, with four paired rows beneath them. Routed borders outlined each front, while round wood knobs matched the surrounding pine.

Dark knots and grain marks stood out across the orange finish. Rounded top molding and a deep plinth framed the cabinet, providing edges that would remain visible after painting.

Sanding exposed the wood beneath the worn coating

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Removed drawers gave access to the frame, while an orbital sander worked across the top and drawer fronts. Lighter wood emerged as the old coating came away.

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Close views show patches of finish remaining during preparation, with scratches and marks visible across the broad top. Sanding came before the first coat of color.

Doubt pushed the ombré plan aside

@thelittlefurnitureroom

With the cabinet stripped back, the scale of the project prompted a change of direction. In her caption, the artist explained that she worried about whether the design would work and how much time it would take.

Warm peach paint went onto the frame instead, beginning a version that would keep the dresser one color.

One peach shade did not feel finished

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Peach covered the drawer fronts, sides, and top, giving the dresser a uniform appearance. The routed borders remained visible, but each row carried the same shade.

Text over the process images explains the next decision: she was not content with that version and returned to her first plan. The single-color stage became the starting point for the ombré.

Brushstrokes on paper tested the sunset palette

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Paint samples explored transitions between cream, peach, orange, and red. Separate bands of color sat beside blended swatches, showing how the shades could meet before they reached the furniture.

Testing the combination on paper offered a small preview of a finish that needed to travel across the full cabinet.

Blended color crossed the drawer divisions

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Orange developed through the middle rows as deeper red spread toward the base. Brushes worked across the fronts and narrow rails, carrying the transition through the spaces between drawers.

Painting those dividers mattered to the result: the gradient continues across the cabinet rather than breaking into separate colored fronts.

Cream at the top deepens into red below

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Viewed from the front, the completed dresser begins with cream across the three upper drawers. Peach follows beneath, then orange and coral deepen into red at the bottom.

Each row holds another stage of the transition, while the routed borders preserve the shape of the original drawer fronts.

Ombré continues around the cabinet sides

@thelittlefurnitureroom

An angled view reveals the same color progression wrapping around the side panel. Light tones cover the upper section, with orange through the middle and red near the floor.

Extending the blend beyond the drawers gives the finish continuity from the front corners to the back edge.

Rounded top molding remains part of the design

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Cream paint covers the broad top and its curved edge, keeping the upper surface quieter than the saturated drawers below. The original molding adds shape beneath the new finish.

A textured metal planter sits near the corner, where the light paint makes the dresser’s layered edge easy to see.

Wood interiors remain behind the painted fronts

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Open drawers reveal wood interiors and sides behind the sunset colors. Dovetail joints remain visible at the corners, along with the grain inside the drawer boxes.

The exterior carries the new design, while these surfaces preserve a direct view of the dresser’s construction.

Gold-toned knobs punctuate the changing colors

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Small round knobs replace the larger wood pulls seen before the makeover. Their warm metal finish repeats across the cream, peach, orange, and red drawers.

@thelittlefurnitureroom

Near the base, the knobs stand out against the deeper color, adding contrast without covering the painted transition.

Eleven drawers now share one sunset effect

@thelittlefurnitureroom

The full view shows how the gradient connects the three small upper drawers with the paired rows below. Color moves down the furniture, crossing both fronts and frame.

Red across the plinth completes the transition, while the cream top marks its lightest point.

Before and after reveal the value of changing course

@thelittlefurnitureroom

The drawer arrangement, framed fronts, rounded top, and deep base remain recognizable in both versions. What changes is where the eye goes: wood grain defined the original, while the finished dresser draws attention through its color progression.

Would you have stopped at the peach finish, or taken the extra step toward sunset ombré? Would black knobs have worked better than the brass ones?

Each mold stays in place for about an hour before the plastic comes off. She scrapes away sharp edges with a lawn staple, then taps and forms the concrete with a small flat stone until each piece has its own rounded outline. The process has taken about 60 hours so far, with another 20 to 30 hours expected before the walkway is complete.

Milk Jugs Created Different Shapes Across the Path

u/missmeatbalIs

Cut sections of plastic milk jugs cover the prepared walkway, each acting as a separate concrete mold. The flexible plastic allows the forms to vary in size and shape, avoiding the repeated pattern produced by a single commercial paving mold.

Before casting the pieces, she removed the grass, leveled the soil, tamped paver base and leveling sand, then added landscape fabric. Black edging establishes the curved route through the yard and contains the walkway materials.

Concrete Came Out of Each Mold After About an Hour

u/missmeatbalIs

Finished pieces in the foreground reveal how much shaping takes place after the milk-jug rings come off. Their rounded sides and irregular outlines bear little resemblance to the straight plastic strips visible farther up the path.

u/missmeatbalIs

She used a lawn staple to scrape sharp edges from the concrete, followed by a small flat stone for tapping and shaping. This extra step turns each poured section into a separate cobblestone-like piece rather than leaving behind rows of concrete cylinders.

Hand-Shaped Stones Fill the Entire Walkway

u/missmeatbalIs

The wider view shows why the project has already consumed around 60 hours. Individual pieces cover the full width of a long route from the house into the backyard, with smaller forms used wherever larger ones leave too much open space.

No fixed repeating pattern controls the layout. Different sizes meet along the bends while the black edging holds the route between the lawn and garden beds.

Milk-Jug Molds Disappear Once the Concrete Is Shaped

u/missmeatbalIs

With most of the plastic removed, the path reads as a continuous cobblestone-style surface. Rounded pieces sit close together without the uniform joints or identical shapes found in standard concrete pavers.

The homeowner still plans another change to the surface. Light gray and dark gray concrete stain will introduce variation between the pieces and break up the current single concrete tone.

Curved Path Connects the Existing Garden Beds

u/missmeatbalIs

The walkway winds between established beds packed with dahlias and other flowering plants before reaching the patio near the house. Curves allow the path to move between those beds rather than cutting a straight strip through the garden.

The project also has a purpose beyond replacing grass with a walkway. The homeowner shared that she is creating the space as a memorial garden for her two dogs, who both passed away this summer.

Work remains between the handmade stones. She has considered polymeric sand for the joints but estimates the amount needed could cost $400 to $500. Reddit commenters suggested options ranging from wide-joint polymeric products and crushed stone to mortar, while she has yet to choose the final filler.

Michigan winter will put the homemade concrete pieces to their first major test. For now, rows of discarded milk-jug molds beside the path show how an everyday container became the tool used to build the entire walkway.

The kitchen already had granite countertops, carved cabinet details, glass-front storage, and an island with a built-in cooktop and sink. Replacing that cabinetry would have meant removing substantial woodwork designed around the room’s windows, appliances, and architectural openings.

Instagram creators from “Pezzotti Painting” took a different approach, refinishing the perimeter cabinets in Sherwin-Williams Navajo White and painting the island Tricorn Black. The granite, beige tile flooring, backsplash, and original cabinet arrangement remained, but the contrast between the two paint colors changed the room’s appearance.

Dark Wood Cabinets Dominated Both Sides of the Kitchen

@pezzottipainting

The original kitchen had two long walls of reddish-brown cabinetry, with tall refrigerator panels on one side and rows of upper and lower cabinets opposite them. Thick crown molding continued above the doors, while the same wood finish covered the central island.

Beige stone-look floor tiles and speckled granite countertops provided lighter surfaces, but the dark cabinets occupied most of the room’s vertical space. Even with several windows and recessed ceiling lights, the cabinetry remained the dominant feature.

@pezzottipainting

The island was more than a preparation counter. It contained a gas cooktop, a small sink, and a curved granite worktop extending toward the back of the kitchen.

Above it, a stainless range hood descended from a large wood-trimmed ceiling canopy. The original dark finish connected the island with the canopy overhead, making the cooking area appear enclosed by matching wood surfaces.

The Original Woodwork Had Details Worth Keeping

@pezzottipainting

Two sets of tall windows meet at a corner occupied by a glass-front cabinet with divided panes. Narrow rope-style molding frames the surrounding cabinets, while broad wood valances run above the windows.

These details were built into the existing cabinetry. The corner cabinet follows the angled countertop below, and the trim continues across the adjacent storage units. Painting the woodwork offered a way to change its appearance without removing those fitted pieces.

Dark Cabinets Extended Beyond the Main Kitchen

@pezzottipainting

The same wood finish appeared in two adjoining built-ins. One held a beverage refrigerator beneath a granite counter, with a diamond wine rack and glass-front cupboards above it. The other served as a desk, with drawers on either side of an open seating space.

Leaving those cabinets dark would have preserved large sections of the original color outside the cooking area. Both were included in the painting project, connecting the adjoining spaces with the new kitchen finish.

The Cabinet Frames Were Painted Without Removing the Countertops

@pezzottipainting

The work-in-progress photo shows Navajo White across the perimeter cabinets while the island remains dark. Plastic covers the appliances, cabinet openings, and range hood, with protective paper and tape extending across the floor.

The wood-trimmed ceiling canopy was also masked and refinished to match the lighter perimeter cabinets. This removed one of the largest dark surfaces above the island without changing the stainless hood suspended beneath it.

Pezzotti Painting used Renner Wood Coatings 851, a two-component polyurethane finish with a 10-sheen level, tinted to the selected Sherwin-Williams colors.

Navajo White Changed the Walls Without Changing the Kitchen Layout

@pezzottipainting

With the perimeter cabinets painted Navajo White, the two long walls no longer read as continuous dark wood. Individual doors, drawers, and tall cabinet sections are separated by their recessed panels and decorative trim.

The refrigerator surround on the right now matches the cabinets on the opposite wall. The granite countertops, beige floor tiles, and stainless range hood remain, giving the finished kitchen much of its original material palette.

@pezzottipainting

The sink wall shows how the warm off-white paint works with the existing finishes. Navajo White has enough warmth to sit beside the beige tile backsplash and brown-gray granite without introducing a stark white contrast.

Raised-panel doors, carved corner trim, and crown molding stand out against the painted surfaces. None of those details required replacement to become more visible.

The Glass-Front Corner Cabinet Became a Different Feature

@pezzottipainting

The corner cabinet between the windows retains its original divided glass doors, narrow side cabinets, and angled base storage. Navajo White now covers the framing, decorative trim, and adjoining cabinetry.

The original dark finish had made the corner cabinet blend into the surrounding woodwork. Against the lighter finish, the glass panes and individual cabinet profiles become distinct features.

@pezzottipainting

The before-and-after comparison also reveals the change above the windows. Dark wood valances once connected the upper cabinets across both walls. After painting, those same pieces match the window trim and adjoining cabinetry, removing the heavy brown border from the top of the room.

The Island Became Tricorn Black Instead of Navajo White

@pezzottipainting

The painters did not carry Navajo White onto the island. Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black replaced its reddish-brown finish, turning the existing cabinetry into a dark centerpiece against the off-white perimeter.

The island still has its curved granite countertop, integrated cooktop, prep sink, and decorative support brackets. Black creates a stronger separation between the island and the beige tile floor while keeping the cooking area prominent.

@pezzottipainting

From the opposite side, the black island sits between the white refrigerator surround, built-in ovens, and glass-front storage. The stainless range hood remains centered above the cooktop, but the canopy now matches the perimeter cabinets rather than the island below.

Painting the island white would have extended the same color across almost every cabinet surface. Tricorn Black preserves a dark element in the middle of the room without returning to the original reddish-brown finish.

The Beverage Station Now Matches the Kitchen

@pezzottipainting

The beverage station received the same warm off-white finish as the kitchen perimeter. Its diamond wine rack, divided glass cabinet doors, and curved lower trim remain above the granite counter.

The stainless beverage refrigerator still occupies the center of the lower cabinets. Against Navajo White, its metal frame becomes more visible, while the decorative cabinet fronts no longer compete with the dark wood finish.

The Built-In Desk Was Included in the Makeover

@pezzottipainting

The desk area also changed from reddish-brown wood to Navajo White. The granite work surface, drawers, and overhead storage remain in place, including the open center shelf above the desk.

An adjacent recessed shelving unit received a matching light finish. Together, these pieces extend the cabinet color beyond the kitchen rather than leaving the surrounding built-ins in their original dark stain.

The Finished Kitchen Has More Contrast Without New Countertops

@pezzottipainting

The full-room comparison shows the impact of changing the cabinet colors while retaining the original kitchen structure. Dark wood once covered both walls, the island, refrigerator surround, and ceiling canopy. Navajo White now occupies the perimeter, while Tricorn Black concentrates the darker finish on the island.

The granite countertops and beige tile flooring look more connected to the new warm-white cabinets, and the black island gives the room a clear focal point. The result comes from changing which surfaces carry the darkest color, not replacing the expensive materials already in the kitchen.
