Good Points

1) Delay Cooking Feature:- If I have a long busy day the last thing I want to do is come home, prepare some food, fill the steamer with water and wait for it to cook.  The delay cooking feature means that I don’t have to do this.  Instead I prepare my food and fill the steamer with water in the morning, set the delay timer so that it comes on 30 minutes before I get home and then when I arrive home I have a hot steamed meal that is ready for me to eat.

2) Keep Warm Feature:- Another thing I really like about the Oster 5712 Electronic Food Steamer is the keep warm feature.  When I am at home and preparing my dinner I often leave it to steam, go on the computer and then get wrapped up in my work.  Before I know it an hour has passed and my dinner has been sitting in the steamer for far too long.  The keep warm feature doesn’t stop me getting wrapped up in my work but it does stop my food going cold which is a big bonus.

Bad Points

1) Very Difficult To Clean:- As mentioned above, the Oster 5712 Electronic Food Steamer comes with an external water fill system.  This is very useful when you don’t put enough water in and you need to add some halfway through cooking but unfortunately the way it’s designed makes it almost impossible to clean.  This means that it gets mouldy far too often and you have to disinfect it with vinegar quite regularly.

Summary

In terms of performance and functionality the Oster 5712 Electronic Food Steamer does everything I would want a steamer to do and more.  It steams food perfectly, has a large capacity and the delay cooking and keep warm features set it apart from basic models.  I just wish the external water fill system was better designed.  This is the only flaw with this product but it is a very frustrating flaw as it leads to a lot of extra cleaning which could otherwise have been avoided.

Good Points

1) Very Competitive Price:- When I first saw the price of the Duronic BL400 I thought it was a typo because it was so low.  However, after adding it to my shopping cart I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the stated price was correct.  In terms of price there aren’t any jug blenders that even come close to this.  The closest competitor was 25% more expensive.  So if you are watching the pennies this is definitely worth a look.

2) Easy To Clean:- One thing I really liked about the Duronic BL400 is that it’s very simple to clean.  All you need to do is give it a quick rinse, add a bit of water and press the autoclean button.  I have found with a lot of blenders that food tends to get stuck inside the blades and is a real nightmare to get out so this autoclean function was a massive timesaver for me.

Bad Points

1) Difficult To Detach The Multi-Mill:- This wasn’t a huge problem for me as I don’t do a lot of grinding.  However, I found when using the multi-mill for the first time that it locks on very tightly and is almost impossible to get off.   I had to really work to force it off and if I was doing this regularly it would really frustrate me.

2) Doesn’t Crush Ice Very Well:- Another negative aspect of the Duronic BL400 is that it takes quite a long time to crush larger ice cubes.  This isn’t a massive problem as you can break the ice up a little bit before you put it in the blender or leave it blending for longer.  However, when the product description states that one of its functions is to crush ice I expected better performance than this.

Summary

The Duronic BL400 White 1.5 Litre Jug Blender is a good quality budget blender and you won’t find anything that is even half as good at blending for the price.  If you are using it to make fruit cocktails, shakes, sauces, smoothies or soups then you will have no problems.  However, if you are going to be crushing ice or grinding spices regularly then you may want to spend a bit more money and get a more powerful blender with a high quality multi-mill.
