When I was growing up, my parents had a 20-inch Sony Trinitron television. There was a 25-inch model, but having a TV that big seemed vulgar. When I would ask my father why he didn’t splash out for the bigger set, he would say, “Who am I, George Lucas?”

It seems almost quaint now. These days you would be hard-pressed to even find a 20-inch display. Maybe there is a L’il Couch Potato model from Fisher-Price that runs that small, but TVs continue to grow at a steroidal rate. Last year, the size of the average TV sold in North America was 38 inches, and you can buy an 80-inch model for a little more than $4,000.

Measurements like these begin to lose their impact unless you really think about them. Televisions are getting huge. Eighty inches is 6 feet 8 inches. That is as big as Carmelo Anthony of the Knicks. If Carmelo Anthony moved into your living room, you would notice.

Once you have gotten the safety issues out of the way, you can move on to the more fun part of where to put your new set. The most important thing you want to consider is how far away you will be sitting. Larger sets require a longer distance, so you can take in as much of the display as possible. A good rule of thumb is to take the diagonal measurement of the display and multiply it by 1.5. That number will tell you how many inches you should be sitting from the screen.

In the interest of providing equal time to opposing viewpoints, it should be mentioned that this 1.5 figure is subject to fervent debate in the videophile community. Some groups recommend a multiple of 2.5, while others go down to 1.2. On the one hand, you do not want to be so close to a display that you begin to notice individual pixels. On the other, you do want to be close enough that the experience is sufficiently immersive, like having your own private Imax theater in the den.

The video resolution you most commonly watch will affect this distance calculation. The higher the resolution, the closer you can sit. If your giant TV will mostly display Blu-ray discs, you can probably use a smaller multiplier, as Blu-ray content is shown at 1080p, the highest available resolution. If, however, you are mostly going to watch lower-quality transmissions (no cable network transmits in 1080p, although there is some on-demand content), you do not want to get too close and may want to go for that higher multiplier.

There is also the matter of how far up the wall you should mount a display or, if placed on furniture, how tall that should be. The truth is that most people place their TVs too high. Over the fireplace may make some degree of aesthetic sense, but it results in viewers slumping in their seat and craning their necks to get a proper viewing angle. Over time, that position can lead to Advil and chiropractors.

What you want to do is position the television so that your eyes are level with the bottom of the display, or at least somewhere within the bottom third of the display. “When it’s at a lower height, a big screen won’t overpower the viewer,” said Dan Levine, the founder of Cytex One, a New York-based home theater and automation designer. “It’s far more comfortable.”

The last point has little to do with video but everything to do with audio. If you are going to get a personal Jumbotron, you really should add a basic soundbar or surround-sound speaker package (often called “home theater in a box” in stores).

That is because while TVs have never looked better, they sound worse than ever. Older TVs were boxy, and boxes are great for speakers. But being slim does nothing good for audio quality.

For $200 to $300, you can get a perfectly decent soundbar from brands like Yamaha, Samsung and Sony. Even less than $200 will buy you something that is leagues better than what has been sandwiched into your TV.

After all, what is the point of having an XXL display to watch if the audio sounds as if it is coming from a transistor radio?
