It is essential that you know what radon is, other wise it poisons you, and how to get around radon poisoning and protect yourself and your loved ones from it.

Radon History

Radon, discovered in 1900 by German physicist Fredrich Dorn. He discovered that the radioactive element radium released radon gas when it is decaying. Radon was later isolated and it was determined to be the heaviest gas known by Sir William Ramsey in 1910. It was not known to have caused damage to humans until the 1950s, when uranium miners started to find huge uptakes in lung cancer among the workforce.

What is Radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas that is formed from the natural decay of radium which is present within the crust of the planet itself. It has no colour, no taste, and no odour and is fairly difficult to notice. It has low chemical reactivity.

Identifying Radon Poisoning and Testing

Radon poisoning occurs when areas without good ventilation build up high amounts of the gas. This happens in mainly mines, but also buildings, basements and houses. It eventually decays over time, and particles hang around in the air. When you inhale these particles, they can damage your lungs DNA cells, and can cause lung cancer if taken in over a long period of time.

The symptoms are;

A strong cough that will not subside

Coughing up blood

Difficulty breathing

Chest pains

Wheezing

Hoarse voice

Constant respiratory infections like pneumonia

It is EXTREMELY important that you seek instant medical help if you have these symptoms.

Preventing Radon Poisoning

Any home, be it old or new, can have problems with radon gas building up. The build-up comes from the soil beneath the building. All education and work environments are asked to check radon levels in the building to ensure that there is not an excess. In small amounts, radon is harmless, in large levels though you could be in trouble. You should seal all cracks in a building too, as sometimes the radon can come in through these cracks – especially around piping.

Still, great improvements can be done without a lot of money.

Whether you want to increase your house value or you just want to make it look better, there are a lot of cheap home improvements you can do.

I will talk about 10 home improvements that I consider to be the best choices:

1) Perfume. The first and one of the cheapest improvements is a “flavored” one: The perfume in the house. There is a trick I’ve tried and it works great. Choose any perfume you like and put a single small drop on the light bulb. When the light is on, the heat from the light bulb makes the aroma spread all over the room.

2) Paint: Maybe you have some pieces of furniture that are not from the same set as the others. You should paint them all in one or two combined colors at your own choice. I personally prefer black and white.

3) Light. A house should be very bright. If possible, use natural light, but it may be expensive to put a new window in the wall so a lamp or more in the dark spots should do the trick.

4) Outside cleaning: This is probably the cheapest home improvement you can do. A nice, clean yard can change the appearance of the entire home. Of course, the cleaning should not be only outside.

5) Flowers. Everywhere you want to put them, they make the house look better.

6) Rail track lighting: This is an awesome invention. You can choose which area to brighten just by moving the halogen bulbs.

7) “The first impression”. What do people first see when they walk into your home? Even before they walk inside, they see the outside and the entrance door. It is important the door to be catchy. After walking inside, people usually look down so they will see the carpet.

8) Kitchen and Bathroom: there are a lot of inexpensive treatments you can do(new curtains, new colors, new towels , etc).

9) Wallpaper. I think wallpapers are a great idea of improving a home. I just love them. They can change the appearance of a room in an instance.

If you want to improve the looks of your home, wallpaper is a must.

10) Rearrange everything.

The last home improvement I mentioned is free of charge. One can give a new perspective and new looks to a room and even to the whole house with just rearranging the furniture and other stuff. You would be surprised just how much you can change with a little creativity.

There are many other cheap home improvements and many undiscovered yet, so I advise you to use the improvements I talked about, to look for others and to think about new improvements nobody used yet.

We bought a nice house to be our home and today it’s our first day in it.
It’s awesome having our dreamed home but something’s missing…the house it’s not quite how we imagined it. What should we do?
There are some steps needed to be followed. I will mention the steps I took to remodel my home.
I’m not saying that these are the only steps or the perfect ones. It’s just an idea in order to help people who are like me, not knowing what to do.
1) Research
This is a very important step and you need to invest a lot of time in it.
Internet is a great research tool. I looked at hundreds of sites about houses and remodeling. You can write down the ideas you like the most and then you can look for information about those ideas on other sites.
You can also ask your friends about how they did it.
The idea is to gather as much information as you can.
3) Check your wallet
Many would say that this is step number one. I say it’s not, because if you are constrained by the budget you will not search for every alternative you have and that I consider a mistake.
As I always say when buying something of high quality, “I’m too poor not to afford it”. If you’re thinking about buying something cheap but low quality because you do not have enough money, DON’T.
Low quality stuff breaks too soon and too often so you end up spending more money on low quality things than it would have cost you the high quality ones.
Do you want to have your dreamed home? Do not use low quality material. Maybe you have to wait and make more money before remodeling, but in the end, it will worth it.
4) Find the right experts
I’ll repeat myself and say: Do not choose the cheapest firm.
It is extremely important to choose the best team you can work with in order to remodel your dream home. Do not rush into choosing, think hard before you choose.
5) Negotiate
I saved a lot of money using this strategy. I negotiated everything, from every piece of material I bought to the price the remodeling team asked me.
6) Anticipate problems
You have to be pro-active, to think ahead everything. How much it will cost, how long it will take, how it will look, what problems might appear.

You have to be ready for any kind of problem.
For example, when I remodeled my home, the team I hired asked more then we agreed upon in the beginning. They said that I didn’t tell them everything I wanted from the start. Of course, I disagreed and in the end I paid more but not the sum they wanted.
Those are the steps I used to remodel my dream home.
As a conclusion, I advise you to remodel your home the way you want, enjoy the process and be organized in doing so.

For many people, insurance is not so important, but it should be.
First, let’s find out what insurance is. I looked up for the definition and it sounds like this: “Insurance is the equitable transfer of the risk of a loss, from one entity to another in exchange for payment”. So, basically you transfer the risk of losing your property to someone else by paying a sum of money.
The amount to be charged for a certain amount of insurance coverage is called the premium.
There are many types of property insurances; in fact, any risk that can be quantified can potentially be insured.
Home insurance, flood insurance, earthquake insurance, fire insurance, aviation insurance, boiler insurance, crop insurance, landlord insurance, marine insurance, even terrorism insurance.
The first step in finding good insurance for your properties is research.
You have to gather as much information as you can. Only by understanding how insurances work one will be able to choose the right one. Searching online is the best way to find out about insurances and even to find the right insurance. Another way to find out more information is to ask friends and family.
A second step would be to meet with an insurance agent. It is important that before this meeting, you know how insurances work.
Once you have enough information and you talked to someone specialized in insurances, you can state the alternatives you have and pick the best one.
Tips in finding good insurance for your property:
For example, let’s take the home insurance: A Home Owners Insurance Policy is designed to protect home owners against certain perils. Individual home insurance policies are determined by named perils and exclusions in a policy. The typical home owner’s insurance policy is divided into two parts:
- Home Insurance Property Protection
- Home Insurance Liability Protection
You have to keep in mind that a standard home insurance will not protect you from floods or earthquakes.
Your home-insurance policy should cover enough to entirely rebuild and furnish your home were it wiped off the map. You should ask an expert to walk through your home and give you an estimate.
When it comes to property insurance, if you have anything of high value, you should insure that separately.
Maybe the insurance company will put you to choose between “actual cash value” and “replacement cost”. My advice is to choose replacement cost because the value usually drops.
One last tip: If you can fix anything for less than $1,000, don’t file a claim.
// ]]>

As a conclusion, when looking for the right property insurance, do a lot of research, ask a lot of people, talk to a lot of companies and watch for the contract details.

Painting small space with the right color:- How can we make a small room look bigger?

Things are not the way they are, things are the way we perceive them. In a small space, the color is everything. You can make that space look larger with the right color. If you choose the wrong color, the space will look even smaller than it really is.

There are some rules that need to be followed if you want to make a small space look larger.

First rule when making a small space look bigger is: KISS (Keep It Super Simple). Do not decorate the space with all kinds of stuff.

Second rule is: “Small space, few colors”. Two colors should be enough, one color for the walls and one for the ceiling. The lower side of the space should be darker than the upper side otherwise you’ll have the impression of being in a box.

Another important rule when painting a small space is to use bright colors. The dark colors will make the room look smaller. If you use dark colors use them only for the floor and the lower side of the room.

If you have the possibility, light up the room as much as you can; natural light would be perfect. It’s amazing how much brightness can change a room’s “size”.

Mirrors can also make your space look larger if you know where to put them.

The right color? I would go with white. White color can make a small space light and airy. For the floor I would choose beige or grey and the walls bright white.

Avoid red, dark blue and purple. These colors make any space look smaller. Warm colors trick the eyes and people think the wall is closer than it really is.

Another rule is to pick complementary colors. The colors you choose need to go well together. Try as many combinations as you can. Buy some paint samples and use it on one wall. Try to paint one wall dark and the other walls bright, it will give the idea of deep and it will make a small space look larger.

In idea would be to try a monochromatic room, use only one color but in different shadows. This will larger the appearance of the space and it will give the feeling of peace and calm.

One last rule or idea is to use glossy paint that will reflect the light.

A small room can become for us a place where we never want to be or it can become our favorite place. It’s your choice. You don’t necessarily have to follow any of the rules mentioned above, you just have to make that small space your favorite place to be. You are free to try any color you like, any furniture you want, after all, it’s your space and you have to feel good in it.

You look around and nothing seems to be at the right place anymore. You want to make some changes in your home but your salary does not seem to be on the same page with you. Well, you don’t have to worry because with creativity and a few cheap apartment decorating ideas you’ll have a new place in no time.

Be creative

First of all, clean out your house and move your sofa where you think it fits better. The idea is to move around your furniture for a fresh start of the room. If you think that a chair is too old or the table sets you in a bad mood get rid of them. You can improvise and have the same comfort as before. After you have finished moving around the furniture and getting rid of the old one, open your windows. Sit in the corner of the room and let inspiration come to you. Focus on parts of the room you wish you change. You think the sofa is old fashioned but you cannot afford to buy a new one. Here are some cheap apartment decorating ideas in regards with the sofa. Replace your old curtains, cut them and put them on the sofa. The old stains or the worn-out aspect of the sofa will be history. Your windows should be chatting with café curtains, preferably with stripes. They are cheap so it won’t cost too much. Also, take some pillows with floral prints and throw them on the sofa. So you have a new sofa and new light in your room.

Color blast

Your room should be all color- orange, green, blue, and red, depending on your wishes. There is no need to paint your walls. Just use color where you can! Paint your dresses or your table. Use light vivid colors and add lines, stripes or shapes to make it more interesting. The color for 2013 is Emerald Green so buy a green vase or make a green corner by placing a flower pot on the floor or on a stand. Pick a flower that is in bloom most of the year or just a green plant for an amazing effect. You can also paint photo frames and place them on the table along with a glass bowl where you can put it a few colored rocks. The best cheap apartment decorating idea would be a green, orange, blue, red chest of drawers where you can organize all the things that you throw on the table.

Home made

If you don’t have any money, you can glue together a bunch of photos on the wall. Just glue your favorite one side by side until you cover the middle of the wall. For adding color in the room, a cheap decorating advice is to place colored pencils on the wall in the shape of a rainbow or butterfly. You can make a unique carpet from wine corks to place it in the bathroom.

These were a few ideas to get you started with decorating your house. If it’s possible in your mind then it’s doable.

Are you planning on having an important event and your house doesn’t look welcoming? Whether you want a change of scenery regarding your home or you just want to get rid of the old furniture here you can find advice on how to proceed. So what should you do first?

Walls

When it comes to redecorating your mobile home, the first thing you should do is paint the walls in warm color such as light brown or deep blue even cranberry or pale yellow. Get rid of the old paint than takes you back to 1970s. You should pick the color depending on the size of the room- the smaller the room the lighter the color. Why is that? You don’t want small rooms painted in dark red or dark brown. It sets off the wrong mood and it makes the room look as if you were in a coffin. Also, if you are a daring person, you can paint yourself an entire wall using patterns or models you choose. You can paint a landscape or just some lines and it will instantly revive the room and give a fresh tone. You can put a black and white large picture that you adore.

Floors

You have been waiting to change the squeaky floors for some years now. What about the old carpets? Oh, no! You do not have to live with that anymore. You can replace your floors with faux wood flooring and paint it with ground color. Put a few small carpets and you have a modern living room or bedroom. When you are redecorating your mobile home, instead of using those large expensive rugs, you can buy colorful carpets-you will find all kinds of models from cartoons to abstract- that will make your house welcoming.

Furniture

When you are having mobile home redecorations there is no need to keep all the plastic tables and chairs around the house. You can have cherry tables when you have some visitors around and for dinning you can have side tables. There is no need to overcrowd your mobile home. Organize your furniture in a spacious manner. Keep everything neat and let light come in. Also, don’t use too many colors. For the furniture, you can use strong color such as red, but that should be only here and there. For example, you can throw red pillows on white sofa or any light colored sofa and it will be enough for the entire room. A great tip that you can use is low furniture. Think of low tables or even the bed… how it will make the room seem higher.

To put it in a nutshell, use light colors and wood, change those enormous rugs and add life to your home. Decorating should not be that hard, right? Just replace something old with something new like the old cupboard doors with glass. Don’t overcrowd things and keep it simple and tasty.

Does your apartment looks like a match box with everything crowded in the middle? You don’t have room to move around and you’re tired of living like this. Well. You should take this like a challenge to change your studio apartment and your life. To make it easy, here are some ideas to get you started.

Let’s organize!

When you think of your studio apartment you should have this in mind:

S- small, but

T-tasty with

U- unique

D-decorating

I-ideas

O- owned by you.

So a studio apartment can be a cozy place where you can cook, eat, sleep, study or read and it can also be the place where all the amazing parties start. Your main room will have to be a bedroom, kitchen and entrance. It can be all that. Just pick a space for each of these functions of the room. You should leave the entrance clear of any furniture with some pictures on the wall. You can centre in the middle the living room and on the right or left wall of the room you can place the kitchen countertops with some shelves for the glasses and plates. Each place of the room should have a function. Look around and think about it.

Light

Open your curtains and take a good look at your place. Doesn’t it already look better? Light makes your place look cleaner and larger. Replace the old dark curtains with some blinds- so you can sleep late in the mornings. Keep the blinds open all day. For a fresh look of the room you can decorate it with sheers for your windows.

Stripes

You have to wisely choose the furniture or arrange it. For a small, but tasty studio apartment like yours will be, you can buy some club chairs with vertical stripes. If you opt for an elegant style, you can choose black and white, but if you are an energetic person you can choose orange, green, whatever you like. Stripes on the couch, on the sheets, on the curtains or on photo frames- you can even paint chaotic stripes on the wall for a modern touch.

Shelves

Due to its size, you need to save the space for larger furniture. You don’t need drawers all over the place. For the reading corner, a library would be ideal but if you don’t have the finance you can put some shelves. You can place books on those shelves and between them small decorating objects, like a sky blue vase or a green plant or even candles. You can use have shelves all over the room to save space but don’t forget to decorate each one of them and do not over-crowed them.

Picture yourself how you enter the apartment you throw the keys in the small basket on the wooden chest of drawers, smile at an old photo of yourself and sit down on the sofa and turn on your wall-TV. What do you see next?
