In reality most mental alienations are bodily diseases only. These mental and emotional symptoms develop in some cases more or less rapidly; assume a state of most conspicuous one-sidedness, is finally transferred like a local disease, into the invisibly fine organs of the mind, where they seem to obscure the bodily symptoms. In short, the disorder of the coarser bodily organs is transferred, as it were, to the almost spiritual organs of the mind, where the physician will search in vain for their cause.

In recording the totality of symptoms of such a case, we must obtain an accurate description of all physical symptoms, which prevailed before the disease degenerated into a one-sided mental disorder. We compare then, these early symptoms with their present indistinct remnants, which occasionally appear during lucid intervals, and add the symptoms of the mental state as observed by the physician and attendants of the patient.

Though a patient may be relieved of an acute mental disorder by non-anti-psoric medicine, no time must be lost in perfecting the cure by continued anti-psoric treatment, so that the disease may not break out anew, which will be prevented by strict adherence to well-regulated diet and habits. If neglected, psora will be usually developed during the second attack, and may assume a form, periodical or continuous, and much more difficult to cure.

Mental diseases, not the result of physical or bodily affections, and which have not yet undermined the physical health too seriously, admit of the speedy cure by psychical treatment, while careful regulations of habits’ will re-establish the health of the body, but as a measure of precaution a course of anti-psoric treatment is advisable, in order to prevent a recurrence of the attack of mental aberration. The physician and attendants must strictly enforce proper hygiene and physical regiment of the mind. The treatment of insane persons should be conducted with a view to the absolute avoidance of corporal punishment or torture. Physicians and attendants should always treat such patients as if they regarded them as rational beings.

Intermittent diseases also claim our attention. Some return at a certain period. There are others, apparently non-febrile affections, resembling intermittents by their peculiar recurrences. There are also affections characterized by the appearance of certain morbid conditions, alternating at uncertain periods with morbid conditions of a different kind. Such alternating diseases are mostly chronic and a product of developed psora. In rare instances they are complicated with syphilitic miasma. The first needs purely anti-psoric treatment, the latter an alternation of anti-psoric with anti-syphilitics.

Typical intermittents recur after a certain period of apparent health, and vanish after an equally definite period. Apparently non-febrile morbid conditions, recurring at certain periods are not of sporadic or epidemic nature, they belong to a class of chronic, mostly genuine psoric diseases. Sometimes an intercurrent dose of highly potentized Peruvian bark extinguishes the intermitted type of the disease.

In sporadic or epidemic intermittents, not prevalent endemically in marshy districts, each attack is mostly composed of two distinct stages, chill and heat, or heat and then chill; still more frequently they consist of three stages, chill, heat and finally sweat. The remedy, usually a non-anti-psoric, must have the power to produce in healthy persons the several successive stages similar to the natural disease, and should correspond as closely as possible with the most prominent and peculiar stage of the disease; but the symptoms which mark the condition of the patient during the pyrexia, should chiefly be taken for guides, in selecting the most striking remedy. The best time to administer the remedy is a short time after the termination of the paroxysm, when the medicine has time to develop its curative effect without violent action or disturbance and the vital force is then in the most favourable condition to be gently modified by the medicine and restored to healthy action. If the apyrexia is very brief, or if the after effects of the preceding paroxysm disturb it, the dose of the medicine should be administered when the sweating stage diminishes or when the subsequent stages of the paroxysm decline.

20. Most chronic diseases originate from three chronic miasms:

a. internal syphilis,

b. internal sycosis, and

c. particularly from internal psora.

Each of these must have pervaded the whole organism and penetrated all its parts before the primary representative local symptom makes its appearance for the prevention of the internal disease. Innumerable chronic diseases may follow the suppression of the local symptom; the true physician cures the great fundamental miasm together with which its primary as well as its secondary symptoms disappears.

21. Before beginning the treatment of a chronic disease the physician must find out whether the patient ever had been infected by syphilis or by gonorrhea. Although it is rare to meet with- uncomplicated cases of these affections, as we usually find them often complicated with psore, the most frequent and fundamental cause of chronic diseases. To determine the course now to be pursued it will be necessary to inquire into all former treatment and what medicines have been employed and with what result. By this we can understand the deviations which the treatment had produced in the original disease, to convert this artificial deterioration.

22. A full anamnesis of the case along with the state of mind and temperament of the patient ought to be recorded. It may be useful to direct or modify the mental condition by psychical means. Guided by the most conspicuous and characteristic symptoms, the physician will be enabled to select the first anti-psoric, anti-syphilitic or anti-sycotic remedy for the beginning of the cure.

23. The state of the patient’s mind and temperament is often of most decisive importance in the selection of the remedy, as each medical substance affects also the mind in a different manner. Mental diseases must only be treated like all other affections and they are curable only by remedies similar to the disease.

17. Affections of external parts, not caused by external injuries, proceed from an internal morbid state. All curative measures must be taken with reference to the state of the whole system, in order to effect the obliteration and cure of the general disease by internal remedies.

In examining such a case, the following steps has to be done:

1.the record of the exact state of the local disease is added to the summary of all symptoms.

2.other peculiarities to be observed in the general condition of the patient.

Then get at the totality of the symptoms and to select the corresponding remedy which removes the local as well as the general symptoms.

Notwithstanding the well-regulated habits of the patient a remnant of the disease may still be left in the affected part, or in the system at large, which the vital force is unable to restore to its normal state; in that case the actual local disease frequently proves to be the product of psora, which has lain dormant in the system, where it is now about to become developed into an actual chronic disease. Anti-psoric treatment will be necessary to remove this remainder and to relieve the habitual symptoms peculiar to the patient previous to the acute attack.

18. It is not advisable to combine the local application of a medicine simultaneously with its internal use. Because it is difficult to determine whether the disease has been exterminated by external application or internal medicine. Relying on the internal remedy alone, the removal of the local disease proves the achievement of a radical cure and of complete recovery from the general disease.

19. When the system is affected with some chronic disease which threatens to destroy vital organs or life itself and which does not yield to the spontaneous efforts of the vital force, the latter endeavors to substitute a local disease on some external part of the body, whether the internal disease is transferred by derivation, in order to lessen the internal morbid process. But still the internal disease may increase constantly and their nature will be compelled to enlarge and aggravate the local symptoms in order to make it a sufficient substitute for, and to subdue the internal disease.

14. Diseases presenting only a few symptoms may be called partial (one-sided) diseases; their chief symptoms indicating either an internal affection, or Headache, or diarrhea, or only a local one. Often a more careful examination reveals more. Occult symptoms, and if this fails we must make the best of these few prominent symptoms as detailed in the selection of the medicine. As for such partial disease, the selected remedy may also be only partially adapted, it may excite necessary symptoms, and symptoms of the disease will be developed which the patient had not previously perceived at all or only imperfectly, thus facilitating the task of selecting a more accurate homoeopathic remedy.

15. After the completion of the effect of each dose of medicine, the case should be re-examined, in order to ascertain what symptoms remain and the corresponding remedy then selected, and so on till normal health is restored.

16. Local diseases are those affections, which are of recent origin and caused by external injury. Affections of external parts requiring mechanical skill belong to surgery alone but often the entire organism is affected to such an extent by injuries as to require dynamic treatment in order that it may be placed in the proper condition for the performance of the curative operation.

10. Instructions are then given in regard to the mode of administering drugs for proving, the conditions which should be observed by the provers, viz., about diet, dosage, record of their symptoms, etc.

Thus a collection of genuine, pure and unreceptive effects of simple drugs should be accumulated and a materia medica of that kind should contain and represent in similitude the elements of numerous natural diseases hereafter to be cured by these means, and should exclude every supposition, every mere assertion or fiction.

A drug fully tested with regard to its power of altering human health, and whose symptoms represent the greatest degree of similitude with the totality of symptoms of a given natural disease, will be the most suitable and reliable homoeopathic remedy for that particular disease, its specific curative agent.

A medicine possessing the power to produce an artificial disease most similar to the natural disease to be cured, exerts its dynamic influence upon the morbidly disturbed vital force and in the right dose will affect those parts of the organism where the natural disease is located and will excite in them an artificial disease.

A well-selected homoeopathic drug will remove a natural acute disease of recent origin, even if severe and painful; au older affection will disappear in a few days, and recovery progress to full restoration of health. Old, complicated diseases demand longer time for their removal. Chronic drug diseases, complicating an uncured natural disease, yield only after great length of time, if they have not become quite incurable.

11. For a few insignificant symptoms of recent origin, no medical treatment is needed; a slight change of diet and habits of living suffice for their removal.

In searching for the homoeopathic specific remedy, the more prominent, uncommon and peculiar (characteristic) symptoms of the case should bear the closest possible similitude to the symptoms of the drug. The more general symptoms deserve less notice, as generalities are common to every disease and almost to every drug.

12. Although a well-selected remedy quietly extinguishes all analogous disease without exciting additional sensations, it may produce a slight aggravation resembling the original disease, so closely that the patient considers it as such. Aggravations caused by larger doses may last for several hours, but in reality these are only drug effects somewhat superior in intensity and very similar to the original disease. The smaller the dose of the drug, so much smaller and shorter is the apparent aggravation of the disease during the first hours. Even in chronic cases, after the days of aggravation have passed, the convalescence will progress almost uninterruptedly for days.

13. If in acute cases the remedy was not properly selected we must examine the case more thoroughly for the purpose of constructing a new picture of the disease. Cases may occur where the first examination of the disease and the first selection of the remedy prove that the totality of the symptoms of the disease is not sufficiently covered by the symptoms of a single remedy; and when we are obliged to choose between two medicines which seem to be equally well-suited to the case, we must prescribe one of these medicines, and it is not advisable to administer the remedy of our second choice without a renewed examination of the patient, because it may no longer correspond to the symptoms which remain after the case has undergone a change and often a different remedy will be indicated. If the medicine of our second choice were still suited to the remnant of the morbid condition, it would now deserve much more confidence and should be employed in preference to others.

7. During the primary effect of a drug, the vital force receives the impression made upon it by the drug and allows the state of health to be altered by it. The vital force then rallies and either calls forth the exact opposite state of feeling or neutralizes the impression made upon it by the drug, thereby establishing the normal state of health. The former is a counter effect and the latter a curative effect.

8. Diseases peculiar to mankind are of two classes:

(1) Rapid, morbid processes caused by abnormal states and derangements of the vital force, acute diseases;

(2) Chronic diseases, originating by infection with a chronic miasma, acting deleteriously upon the living organism and undermining health to such a degree that the vital force can only make imperfect and ineffectual resistance, which may result in the final destruction of the organism.

Acute diseases may be sporadic, endemic or epidemic. Allopathic is responsible for many an incurable disease; owing to the use of several drugs the organism becomes gradually and abnormally deranged according to the character of the drug used.

True chronic diseases arise mostly from syphilis, psychosis and Psora. The latter (Psora) is often the fundamental cause and source of countless forms of diseases, figuring as peculiar and definite diseases in our text books on Pathology.

9. Individualization in the investigation of a case of disease, demands unbiased judgment, sound common sense, attentive observation and carefulness and accuracy in noting down the image of the disease.

The physician is then required to select the corresponding drug, which in its effects on healthy persons produces symptoms strikingly similar to those of the disease. Upon subsequent enquiry regarding the effects of the remedy, the physician should then take into account the remaining symptoms, or new symptoms, which may have appeared, for selecting another remedy.

The physician should be acquainted with the full range of disease-producing power of each drug, that is, all morbid symptoms and changes of the state of health which each drug is capable of producing by itself in healthy persons, in order to discover what elements of disease each is able to produce and inclined to excite by itself in the condition of mind and body. Thus, the disease-producing power of drugs can be made available homeopathically in the case of all diseases.

2.1 - THE ORGANON (A Synopsis)

1. The physician's highest and only duty is to restore health to the sick, which is called healing. Healing ought to be accompanied in the most speedy, most gentle and most reliable manner. To do this he must know the ailment of the patient, select the remedy, the dose and its repetition according to each individual case. Sanitation and hygiene Art studies in which every physician must be well versed.

2. Constitution of the patient, his mind and temperament, occupation, mode of living and habits, social and domestic relations, age and sexual functions, etc. give us the individuality of the patient.

3. Deviations from the normal state show themselves by morbid signs or symptoms. The totality of these symptoms, this outwardly rejected image of the inner nature of the diseased state i.e., of suffering dynamic, or living force, is the principal and only condition to be recognized in order that they may be removed and health restored.

4. Life, a dynamic principle animates the material body and this material body passes away as soon as it is bereft of this life force. In health, harmonious vital force becomes deranged by the dynamic influence of some morbific agency inimical to life, hence abnormal functional activity, manifesting itself by morbid sensations and functions, by morbid symptoms.

This morbidly changed life force can only be restored to its normal state by a similarly acting dynamic power of the appropriate remedy, acting on the omnipresent susceptibility of the nerves of the organism. The total removal of all symptoms is health restored, and therefore the totality of symptoms observed in each individual case can be the only indication to guide us in the selection of a remedy. These aberrations from the state of health can only be removed by the curative power inherent in medicine to turn the sensorial condition of the body again into its normal state.

5. Experiments on animals, vivisection (scientific dissection or experiment) and autopsy (post-mortem examination) can never reveal the inherent power of medicine: the healthy human body alone is the fit subject for such experiments, where they excite numerous definite morbid symptoms, and it follows that if drugs act as curative remedies, they exercise this curative power only by virtue of altering bodily feelings through the production of peculiar symptoms, which then they are able to remove from the sick; in other words the remedy must be able to produce an artificial morbid condition similar to that of the natural disease.

6. Experience teaches that all drugs will, without exception, cure diseases the symptoms of which are as similar as possible to those of the drugs, and leave none uncured.

Natural diseases are removed by proper medicines, because the normal state is more readily affected by the right dose of a drug than by natural morbific agencies.

Physical and partly physical terrestrial forces show their greatest power where this life-power is below par, hence they do not affect everybody nor do they do so at all times. We may, therefore, assert that extraneous, noxious agencies possess only a subordinate and conditional power, while drug potencies possess an absolute unconditional power.

Drug disease is substituted for the natural disease, when the drug causes symptoms most similar to that which is to be cured, and it is hardly possible to perform a cure by means of drugs incapable of producing in the organism a diseased condition similar to that which is to be cured.

Palliation of prominent symptoms should be ignored, as it provides only in part for a single symptom, it may bring partial relief but this is soon followed by a perceptible aggravation of the entire disease.

Homoeopathy is being defined as the THERAPEUTIC METHOD of SYMPTOM-SIMILARITY.

Homoeopathy deals only with Therapeutics, i.e., treatment of disease. It is further limited to the use of certain pharmacological preparations prepared according to standard, well-defined principles laid down by the Founder.

Law of Homoeopathic relationship is two-fold:

1. We have a group of symptoms expressing the disease.

2. We have a group of symptoms caused by the effect of some drug on the healthy human body.

“In applying this Law in practice if a disease is curable and if medicine which has the same group of symptoms corresponding to the disease is given in conformity with the Homoeopathic rules of practice, a cure is bound to follow.”-T.S.Iyer.

Therefore,

1. Homoeopathy is a special form of using drugs.

2. The practice of this system is not in conflict with the great field of modern medicine.

Advantages of Homoeopathy over modern medicine:

1. Greater attention paid to the study of the scope and usefulness of drugs in the treatment of diseases;

2. The use of single remedies whose effects are well-known;

3. The laws for the administration of homoeopathic drugs are based on certain well-defined principles; and

4. The absence of possibility of any danger to the patient by their wrong or excessive administration.

In short, Homoeopathy is a practical method of using drugs backed up by the experience of over more than a century, which will hold good for all time. Homeopathy’s foundation is like a rock as it is based on symptoms of disease and symptoms of drugs, which will not undergo any change.

The principle of medical similars

Homeopathy is based on the 'Principle of Similars', first expressed by Hahnemann in the exhortation similia similibus curentur or 'let likes cure likes'. This is the opposite of 'contraries' upon which the Galenic medicine of his day was based, which Hahnemann initially practised and in which he had been trained.

The 'law of similars' is an ancient medical maxim, but its modern form is based on Hahnemann's conclusion that a constellation of symptoms induced by a given homeopathic remedy in a group of healthy individuals will cure a similar set of symptoms in the sick. Symptom patterns associated with various remedies are determined by 'provings', in which healthy volunteers are given remedies, often in molecular doses, and the resulting physical, mental and spiritual symptoms are compiled by observers into a 'Drug Picture'.

Hahnemann says of the attitude his first proving inspired in him: "with this first trial broke upon me the dawn that has since brightened into the most brilliant day of the medical art; that it is only in virtue of their power to make the healthy human being ill that medicines can cure morbid states, and indeed, only such morbid states are composed of symptoms which the drug to be selected for them can itself produce in similarity on the healthy."

Homeopathic practitioners rely on two types of reference in prescribing. The Homeopathic Materia Medicae comprise alphabetical indexes of Drug Pictures organized by remedy and describe the symptom patterns associated with individual remedies. The Homeopathic repertory consists of an index of sickness symptoms, listing all remedies associated with specific symptoms. The first such Homeopathic repertory was George Jahr's Repertory, published in 1835.

Hahnemann first tested in homeopathic provings substances commonly used as medicines in his time, such as Antimony and Rhubarb, and also poisons like Arsenic, Mercury and Belladonna.

Hahnemann recorded his first provings of 27 drugs in the Fragmenta de viribus in 1805 and later in his Materia Medica Pura, which contained 65 proven drugs. He was most heavily engaged in proving in the 1790s and early 1800s, but he never abandoned these experiments. Another phase of proving commenced with his Miasm theory and The Chronic Diseases, published in 1828, and containing 48 freshly 'proven' drugs.

Kent's Lectures on Homoeopathic Materia Medica (1905) lists 217 remedies, and new substances are continually added to contemporary versions. Homeopathy uses many animal, plant, mineral, and synthetic substances. Examples include Natrum muriaticum (sodium chloride or table salt), Lachesis muta (the venom of the bushmaster snake), Opium, and Thyroidinum (thyroid hormone). Other homeopathic remedies, ('isopathic' remedies'), involve dilution of the agent or product of the disease. Rabies nosode, for example, is made by diluting the saliva of a rabid dog. Some modern homeopaths are exploring the use of more esoteric substances, known as "imponderables" because they do not originate from a material but from electromagnetic energy presumed to have been "captured" by alcohol or lactose (X-ray, Sol (sunlight), Positronium, and Electricitas (electricity) or through the use of a telescope (Polaris). Recent ventures by homeopaths into even more esoteric substances include Tempesta (thunderstorm), and Berlin wall.

Today, about 3000 remedies are used in homeopathy; about 300 are based on comprehensive Materia Medica information, about 1500 on relatively fragmentary knowledge and the rest are used experimentally in difficult cases based on the law of similars, either without knowledge of their homeopathic properties or through speculative knowledge independent of the law of similars. This modern approach also harks back to the ancient 'doctrine of signatures,' which Hahnemann definitely rejected as uncertain guesswork: "The ancients imagined that the yellow colour of the juice of... (Chelidonium, Yellow Poppy) was an indication (signature) of its utility in bilious diseases. The moderns from this extended its employment to hepatic diseases...the importance of human health does not admit of any such uncertain directions for the employment of medicines. It would be criminal frivolity to rest contented with such guesswork at the bedside of the sick. Only that which the drugs themselves unequivocally reveal of their peculiar powers in their effects on the healthy human body – that is to say, only their pure symptoms – can teach us loudly and clearly when they can be advantageously used with certainty; and this is when they are administered in morbid states very similar to those they are able to produce on the healthy body."

Examples of this impulse to expand the materia medica include: the use of an isopathic (disease associated) agent as a first prescription in a 'stuck' case, when the beginning of disease coincides with a specific event such as vaccination; the use of a chemically-related substance when a remedy that was well-indicated fails. A good example of this is found in the Bowel Nosodes which were introduced by the British homeopaths, Edward Bach bacterial flora thought to be associated with persons of different homeopathic constitutional types. Though receiving more attention today, the Bowel Nosodes are rarely used outside British homeopathy. (1886-1936), John Paterson (1890-1954) and Charles Edwin Wheeler (1868-1946) in the 1920s. Their use is based on the variable bowel

More recently, homeopathy has embraced substances based on their elemental classification (the periodic table or biological taxonomy). This approach may create neat systems for grouping remedies and classifying the ever-burgeoning Materia Medica, but its usefulness is questioned by some purists on the basis that it involves speculation about remedy action without provings.

There are many methods for determining the most-similar remedy (the simillimum), and homeopaths sometimes disagree. This is partly due to the complexity of the 'totality of symptoms' concept; homeopaths do not use all symptoms, but decide which are the most characteristic; this subjective evaluation of case analysis rests crucially on knowledge and experience. Finally, the Drug Picture in the Materia Medica is always more comprehensive than the symptoms exhibited by any individual. These factors mean that a homeopathic prescription can remain presumptive until it is verified by testing the effect of the remedy on the patient.

Alternative modes of selecting remedies include medical dowsing or the use of other psychic powers. However, these methods are controversial and not accepted by most homeopathic practitioners.

The law of similars is more of a guiding principle than a scientific law. It is not built on a hypothesis that can be falsified; a failure to cure homeopathically can always be attributed to incorrect selection of a remedy:

Homeopathy (also spelled homœopathy or homoeopathy) from the Greek words όμοιος, hómoios (similar) and πάθος, páthos (suffering), is an alternative medicine that attempts to treat "like with like." The term "homeopathy" was coined by the German physician Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843) and first appeared in print in 1807, although he began outlining his beliefs of medical similars in a series of articles and monographs in 1796.

Homeopathy attempts to treat the sick with extremely diluted agents that, in undiluted doses, produce similar symptoms in the healthy. However, processes use cause the dose to be exactly zero in most cases: Its adherents and practitioners assert that the therapeutic potency of a remedy can be increased by serial dilution of the drug, combined with succussion, or vigorous shaking. This is, however, not supported by chemistry or physics. Homeopathy regards diseases as morbid derangements of the organism, and states that instances of disease in different people differ fundamentally. Homeopathy views a sick person as having a dynamic disturbance in a hypothetical "vital force", a disturbance which, homeopaths claim, underlies standard medical diagnoses of named diseases.

Scientists describe homeopathy as pseudoscience ,quackery and is inconsistent with the laws of chemistry and physics. Medicines as such cannot cure diseases. They can only suppress the symptoms and give a false impression of a cue, when given for their contrary effects. Individual’s VITALITY conquers and cures the disease; and physician’s duty is to prescribe medicines to increase the vitality. Sometimes, it may happen in some cases, that the vitality of the individual falls to such a depth, could not be roused to the optimum level of strength to cure the disease. This is how that some cases become fatal. Some cases become fatal due to faulty treatment.

A vast study, keen intellect and great experience along with empathy towards patients are required to acquire skills and practice this superb ART OF HEALING. Accidents & malformations cannot not be called as diseases; anyway they have to be treated. Diseases have their origin in some faulty conditions in which the individual lives, such as bad habits, unbalanced & faulty food, unhealthy atmosphere & surroundings, etc., So long as these conditions persist, any form of treatment can give only temporary remedy, relief & benefit. To give a permanent cure, the faulty conditions must be removed and the first step of treatment is to treat the individual for the damage created already by these faulty conditions. If not, the chances of recurrence is high. This form basis for chronic diseases. It is first and foremost duty of a Good Physician to find out the faulty condition that caused the disease and counsell the individual (patient) to rectify the faulty condition. To administer a few doses of medicine without advising the patient to rectify the faulty conditions, is a great negligence on the part of the physician.

During the course of a disease, Nature produces certain symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, pain etc., These symptoms are reactions of the individual's vitality.

Homoeopathy is a system of therapeutics for treating people and animals on the basis of the simple principle 66 similia similibus and curanter " The word Homoeopathy is derived from the Greek word "Homoeos" meaning like or similar and "Pathos" meaning sufferings.

"Healing" is an "ART"; and not a mechanical routine. A TRUE PHYSICIAN must have tha capacity to apply his intellect to analyse the individual and of course the various causes for the illness, assess their correct values and administer the simplest treatment to eradicate the root cause of the illness, thereby ensuring non-reoccurence.

Each Individual is a seperate entity. Different individuals react to he same cause differently. Hence, it is the individual and not the cause, that has to be studied diligently, though the cause has to be taken into account. It is the individual that has to be treated and not the cause. This is the correct way of treatment.
