The main guitar riff is something I thought up many years ago (I remember sitting in my room writing this when I still lived with my parents) and I never wrote it down. I added the other instruments tonight.

I actually sang this to my colleague today to illustrate the difference in pronunciation between the german “du” and the norwegian “du”. The word means the same in both languages, however in Norwegian the “u” sounds sort of like “ou” in “you”. In German, well, hit play on the youtube video.

My colleagues response was to make fun of me for being 25% german.

How does it all work? Well first you need a compressor. This machine basically sucks in air(the same air we breathe) and compresses it, usually by putting it straight into a tank. So then you have a bunch of compressed air in a tank. This is kind of like a spraycan, the volume of the air is less then the volume it is naturally, therefore it will come out if you open up a tiny hole in the spraycan, by pushing on the nozzle. Instead of a nozzle like a spraycan, the airtank connected to the compressor just goes into a tube or hose that go to the machine, or machines. If you have a building full of them, you might even have an entire network of tubes around the place, with air outlets on several spots to connect machines to.

And then? Valves. A valve is basically a mechanism that directs air to one or more places, blocks it, or just sets the air free again. The official term is exhausting, but I prefer setting free. There are many kinds of these industrial valves, such as control valves, ball valves, spring valves, and so on. Each valve has its own function, some of them just to pass air through in one direction, while not allowing it to flow in the opposite direction. Other valves will open and close the airflow for some ports, depending on whether other ports on the valve have air pressure on them. This allows you to use an actual button to apply air pressure to said port, which opens the valve and starts for example a motor. The possibilities are endless. Apart from fancy buttons with fancy valves, you can also simply open and close the airflow using ball valves. A ball valve is basically a ball with holes and a handle. The handle allows you to turn the holes in front of the ports or away from them, allowing air to pass through, or blocking it.

For more information on specific types of valves, I highly recommend these valve articles. Careful though, the concept is addicting, and before you know you’ll be sketching complicated pneumatic systems.

They are back they are, with their list of the ten bestest webhosts. The list has changed from previous time though, bluehost apparantly got their act together and moved from number five to number 3, taking over from fatcow, which has magiccally disappeared from the list! They are not out of business or anything, so I wonder what happened there.

Apart from the the site appears to be pretty much the same as it was last time, when I did a review on them back in April. They do have a handy search function which allows you to search for hosts with specific features like how much disk space, how many ftp / email / subdomains and so forth, as well as which price range. Also you can look for specific features like whether it supports PHP, SSH, Javascript, you can search for pretty much anything except the name – so If you would like to see how your favourite host is ranking in their system you wouldn’t be able to do so using their search. Apart from the search they offer some handy categories as well, such as windows hosting, linux hosting, mysql host, but also some curious ones like UK hosting or Adult hosting. I don’t really see how UK hosting would be relevant for their quality at all, nor do I figure a company specializing in adult hosting would be better at it then a regular webhost which is OK with adult hosting.

If you click adult hosting however, you get a new top ten for adult hosting, where fatcow is suddenly third again.

When I look back at the review I did for these guys back in April, I was surprised by what I wrote about Godaddy. It says that I read the review on Godaddy that this site offers, and that it got me back to the level of satisfaction I experienced when I first signed up with Godaddy. This was before I switched to Dreamhost. I figured I had to read the Godaddy review again now that I took my business elsewhere. The review had in fact changed, and is reflecting my opinion, apart from the part where it says their servers usually perform well.

Anyway, apart from wordpress tips, they also have information on hosting, how to find the best web hosting in a list like we have seen in the review for Web Hosting Choice earlier. That list has changed by the way, however this one is again different.

Bluehost is at the top, justhost is at number two. Who to believe? Well, I believe webhosting is a personal choice. I use Dreamhost myself, which is not even on this list. It does fit my needs and demands exactly, which is key. If you are looking for hosting, then first get an idea of what you need exactly, and then make a list of hosts that fit those needs. Then investigate on the hosts you came up with on the list.

For instance, initially I hosted my site with Godaddy, which did have a pretty good deal if you look at the money and the features, but after using it for a while i discovered that their speed is shit, and their interface is even more shit. Which is okay as long as you just FTP on there and mind your own software, but at the point where you need to go in and change some settings you are forced to navigate through impossible situations where they try to sell you shit every step of the way, using real aggressive methods to do so. What I am trying to say is, don’t let stats fool you, and do the proper research before you go into business with a webhost. You are going to be hosting your personal stuff there, your intellectual property, your money making opportunity, or maybe something i didn’t think of – but there needs to be a certain kind of respect between you and your webhost. I currently host my site at Dreamhost, and they rock. But that’s for another time to elaborate on.

Life is pretty hectic and I do not put much updates out there these days, however if you are desperate for your Whoohoonick fix, I recommend adding me on facebook and following me on twitter. I do focus a lot on music these days and release the occasional song, so that’s at least something.

Let’s have a look at the Fanny Packs. They actually have a collection of 8 fanny packs. For the man who wants the “I am a fat american tourist” look. In case you want to signal to people around you that you are incapable of finding any other type of vessel for your three tiny things so you have decided that instead of using a briefcase or a bag, or even for the love of little green apples a plastic bag or a reusable hemp bag. Now, you have decided that you needed something to emphasize that you already have a huge gut, and you just don’t feel that it’s not taking up enough space on the public transport that you are taking, as it is.

Anyway, I digress. The other products are kickass though.

Now, I must say that I am not a Microsoft-hater. Not anymore. They did a great job on Vista, and are releasing some free apps here and there as well, that are all well coded and well written. So my hopes for Windows Live Skydrive are pretty high.

I figured the best way of joining was actually just logging into Windows Live for a start. Amazingly enough, I get thrown into a Dashboard-like environment, all ready for networking with my MSN buddies. I was not aware that this existed. It also encourages me to update my profile, and configure it. I can not find skydrive. I get frustrated and start looking around in my friendslist over there, and find myself looking at one of my contacts pictures. Which get pulled off their skydrive.

So I take the URL and chop off the last bit, so that it just goes to http://skydrive.live.com – and there I am in my skydrive.

Anyway, it appears I already have a porn folder on my skydrive. It looks like I already before have had the intention of backing up my porn on my Windows Live Skydrive. Which is peculiar, as I have no recollection of ever dealing with skydrive before, whatsoever. My porn folder however, is dissapointingly empty. Skydrive encourages me to add some files, though!

It lets me select them one by one, which is not really convenient, and then it just starts uploading ajaxy. This means I need to remember to keep my browser running.

The files upload swiftly and then i can browse through them and download them. This should work allright.

Remember this? It was the header, before I did the switch to Whoo Hoo Nick. I want to keep the Excellence, though.

However, space is not infinite, so I am joining mozy as well. I mean, it’s not cheating if you take op several free offers – although very simular offers – at the same time, right? Or is this faux pas, that is an interesting subject. Faux pas aside, I need somewhere to back up my junk so I am trying Mozy. Logged in, and a friendly page tells me to download their application to start backing up, so I do.

On the download page I am given the choice between Mac and Win, and 9.2 downloaded in less then a minute, even though I was downloading Kubuntu in another window. I don’t do torrents. While burning Kubuntu, I start the install routine. I generally recommend against running installations while burning a CD, because it can both fuck up your CD and your installation, however I know what I am doing, so I get to. But do not ask me for help if you tried the same thing and failed, because you will sooner or later. I have, and I will again.

Anyway, MozyHome Backup(is what apparantly the mozy software is called) does not ask any really hard questions, and install does not take an unreasonable amount of time, but you do go looking for other entertainment during the installation process. Finish button jumps you into a wizard, and the comfy mozy icon appears in the task tray.

The wizard of course starts with asking for username and password, but after that, surprisingly jumps into details about the kind of encryption to choose. Gee, I don’t know. I do not know a whole lot about encryption, and am definately not keen on judging which one is better. Or even which one would save bandwidth, or maybe even speed. No hints, no help, I think a few more of these sort of questions and I will be thrown off. I choose the blowfish encryption, because I like fishies. Mozy has in the meantime scanned my computer and offers some items to back up, and promises me that I can change them later. Why later, it would be obvious to do this now. I might even forget about doing it.

When I try to deselect the files it had chosen, which are not the files where I actually save stuff I want to keep, it automatically selects them again, which is just fucking annoying. Frustrated, i push next, and suddenly mozy demands to check my internet connection to see if the speed is allright, because mozy requires an highspeed connection. It made no mention of that ever before. It congratulates me with my internet speed and we can move on.

In the end I at least get an option to continue in expert mode. I accept. Here I can in fact deselect files, and add new ones.

I find that the best way to do so, is to drop the entire “Backup sets” thing because I can not figure it out, and go straight to the “File System” section. I select my Ableton Tunes folder, as this is where I keep my recording. I am using Ableton Lite, which came with my fasttrack USB and is completely awesome.

I tried my Kompoz folder too, but then I went over the ratio. That is cool though, all Kompoz files are stored at Kompoz as well and I can retrieve those any time.

I wander through the other settings and notice it is pretty much all set to go backup whenever the computer is idle. I accept, and rightclick on the trusty tray icon to choose “start backup”. The icon blinks slowyl but casually to indicate that it is working in the background.

Bitch to set up, but it appears it works sort of nicely. I migth writer later about how to retrieve backups, but for now, It has an uploading job to do.

I came across Adrive, so I signed up and activated my account. The email came instantly. I guess the black background of the site gave me a sort of not-really-ajaxy feeling, and the signup process gave me the impression that this a real serious thing. Real tight. Like the kind of establishment I would like looking after my porn.

Anyway, activated my account, logged in, and boom, I am logged in. No wait, I am not. Up comes a new screen with a captcha. After that however, I am presented with a nifty filemanager in flash. To upload however, I need to install java. I am not too happy with that, java is pretty slow and crashy already, plus it is not supported under chrome (aka dodgy version available) so my hopes are not exactly high at this point.

After installing java and relaunching chrome, I need to sign into Adrive again. First, i get my password wrong. Then, it won’t let me log in cause another session was still active, and I need to terminate that first. Fortunately it lets me do that by just logging in again, this time using another login window with the specific function of logging out other active session, and logging into the new. They are really going gestapo on my ass here. I really think storing my porn here was a great idea.

Anyway, all I do was hit another captcha(I swear to gosh, captcha’s are brainwashing the masses with subliminial messages), and I am in. Now, I can even get to the java upload tool. Always trust content, click run, and I am in. The upload window looks, well, java-y. It does the trick I guess, but it will take some getting used to. I am curious to see if it has any functions beyond really manual uploading and downloading of files. Did I already tell you I intend to sync my porn folder and archive old content? My hopes are not high for this one, but I keep exploring. The advantage is though, that after I close the browser window, the Java keeps on uploading the file. I guess that is pretty sweet. Too bad it is not more discrete about the filenames though. I do have to hide the porn and the porn names from the kid, you know.

Now, after closing the browser mind you, it did upload the files fine, but of course I had to login again, as it does not remember your session. This is really fucking annoying with the captcha.

I think I will look for a pornhost elsewhere.

It is not done yet, but it is complete. I want some work done, and add some keys, maybe some horns.

Their website is still the same though, including the “the vault” bit set to "coming soon”, which means that soon still means the same today as it did in January 2008, and still with the awesome design and terrible navigation.

They do seem to have their act together though, as they put it themselves: They utilize the most innovative protection techniques and protocols to ensure that your art will stay in its original condition, no matter how long the journey. This is English for: they know their shit.

Their image gallery is quite impressive actually, and it gives a good impression of how serious they are about things. Temperature controlled vaults, good packing material, and even a custom climate control vehicle. If you need your art moved somewhere, they make sure it doesn’t melt.

Now here’s how you can enjoy that space even more:

1. Portable apps

On http://portableapps.com you find a whole range of “portable” applications. Portable means that they can run on most windows systems without having to run a setup program. The point of this, is that you can carry around a USB stick with all the applications you use, and run them anywhere. You can pick up work where you left between pc’s.
This all works perfectly fine on dropbox as well. You just put the apps in your dropbox folder on any of the PC’s you got dropbox installed on, and dropbox will keep them synced. Close portablefirefox on your computer, drive to work, start portablefirefox and your tabs and bookmarks will be there the way you left them at home, and vice versa.

There are portableapps that are not on portableapps.com, so if your application is missing just google “portable [name of your application]” and you are likely to find out whether someone already tried to run the program you want off a USB stick. Examples of apps I use are Google Chrome, and Actionoutline.

2. Map dropbox to a drive

I am not familiar with any elegant way to map a folder to a drive in Windows, so I use what I have been using since DOS 6 or so: the subst command.

Here is how you do it:

rightclick on start, and choose open. Then open the folder Programs, then Startup. Then rightclick anywhere in the white area(just don’t do it on a file) and choose new –> shortcut.

Now you should be presented with a window that asks you where you want the shortcut to link to:

In windows XP and Vista, the path to the subst command is this:

C:\Windows\System32\subst.exe

But that is not all! You need to add the drive letter that you want to assign dropbox to (I used B) followed by a colon, a space, and then the path to your dropbox folder. If the path to your dropbox folder contains spaces, then it needs to be put between quotation marks.

You can find the path to your dropbox folder by rightclicking on your wee dropbox icon in the system tray, and choosing preferences. 

So in my example, the full text for the shortcut is:

C:\Windows\System32\subst.exe b: "C:\Users\Hoo Hoo Nick\Documents\My Dropbox"

With the quations marks. That’s right, not without, but with.

Now you can enjoy dropbox as if it is its own drive:

Unfortunately, windows does not allow you to name this substituted drive anything, and as you can see it shows the same amount of free/used space as the drive that your dropbox folder is on. How is it handy you might ask?

Well, if you install a (portable) app on your dropbox or save a file to it, rather then browsing all the way to your dropbox folder you can just type the path quickly , for example b:\apps\chrome or b:\pics\epicbutt.png. It makes live easier

3. Restoring backups

Did you know that you can access your dropbox files via their web interface as well? You can even get access to files you may have deleted or overwritten by accident!

Here’s how you do it. First you go to http://getdropbox.com and log in with your username and password. Alternatively, you can rightclick the wee dropbox icon and choose the second option from the top, web interface.

When you hover over a file here, you will notice a little triangle at the very right side of the selection box: Click the triangle for some extra options. You will find the standard and obvious choices like move, copy, delete, download and so forth, but the real revolutionary thing here is the one at the top, Revisions. Click it.

This will present you with some revisions of the file:

As you can see, for the particular file in question there are seven pages of revisions! The least recent one was 21 days ago. 20 days ago I actually accidentally deleted the file, and restored it as well.

At that point I of course could not hover over the file to find an older revision, as I deleted the file and it was not there. What I had to do then was simply click on and then the files were all there, only in grey. I could then use the “revisions” link as if I had never deleted it.

I hope that was helpful for those that already have dropbox, as well as those that need a solution like this.

Here’s something I made back in 2002, I just found it in my old files and figured i’d share. It’s a ps/2 to USB adapter. It was designed to make my old ps/2 / serial wireless mouse work on USB.

As expected, it didn’t do the trick. Note that I am not really stupid enough to think that this would work. Based on the comments my “Magic tricks explained” youtube video received over the past years, I feel I have to explain every time I am just acting stupid.

Why am I not exposing any of these pictures here? Well, because I do not want join in encouraging people to hurt themselves. When he first started doing this, it was his mommies job to stop him and encourage him to do something more productive for the community. I must say that he does it really well though. The pictures I have seen really capture the moment and really give you the ZOMG feeling. They almost make you feel the pain he feels when falling.But I mean, let’s be serious. About 30 to 40 years ago these “daredevils” were quite the attraction, but it’s 2009! If mister Skarbakka would perform in a superhero suit and jump sharks using a pogo stick we would boo him off stage. Just because he found the y2k equivalent doesn’t mean we should be more accepting to it.

My son woke me up at 5.30 as usual(It’s true! See, I mean it when I say "please kill me".). Before using his potty we had the usual long discussion about it. Then we did the mandatory fight about washing his hands afterwards, and after that it was time to hit the sofa and try and catch some more Z’s. It was then I realised it was the big day. I checked the clock on my cell and it said 5.59am. I walked on over to my computer and found an excited IM from robbie there pointing me to facebook.com/username. And another one saying "fine, don’t answer.". This was one minute before the great moment.

So I went to the url at the right time and was presented with some suggested usernames, plus a field to make up my own. I know exactly what I want and typed:

Facebook didn’t like it. It said that the username has to be 5 characters or more. Damn it! I can get Whoohoonick any time, nobody else uses that. I had to pick Whoohoonick after trying some things like obama, facebook, and considering moc.koobacef.www to get the nice mirror effect.

As if that didn’t piss me off enough at 11.32am blur(<3) posted this:

How come they get to use a four letter username when I don’t? Also, Nick is my name! lots of names have only four letters. It’s not like I made up some silly non existing username.
