How to Pack Hookahs When Traveling

A hookah is a great piece of entertainment when taken on a trip. As you may know, a hookah includes a lot of fragile pieces. The glass vase and ceramic bowl may shatter in a plane and even on a car ride in transit. This post is going to teach you on how to pack hookah when traveling by using packaging supplies at a very low rate or even for free. I use to phases to pack the hookah, the protecting phase and packing phase.

Phase 1 – Protecting

The first piece of supply to care for is the hookah glass vase. Without a vase, smoking hookah on a trip becomes impossible because if your bowl breaks you can replace it with an apple head. Most hookahs come with a carrying case but even that is not too sturdy to keep a hookah intact. I recommend wrapping bubble wrap 3 times around the vase and the bubbles should be large for added protection. Then go around the vase 2 times with industrial tape to ensure that the bubble wrap is securely protecting the vase.

Once the hookah vase is wrapped, I then take a newspaper. In my case, I use the front cover of the LA Times and wrap the whole entire bowl with the newspaper. I then use the industrial tape to secure the wrapping as well.

Phase 2 – Packing

When your hookah is securely protected your hookah vase and bowl can withhold most impacts and it will be protected if dropped on the floor. I then begin to shred 4 pages of newspaper into small pieces and securely place half the paper at the bottom of the carrying case and then begin to place the vase and the other parts of the hookah in the case. If the case is too small, I use a cardboard box to pack the hookah parts. Once the hookah is securely placed in the case or box, I sprinkle the rest of the shredded paper on the top of the hookah parts, close the top, and I am ready for my trip!

Tip: I usually take Junior Hookahs on vacation if I am traveling by car or plane because it’s very easy to carry it on with no problem. The airport security simply opens the hookah and lets me pass security and I have yet to have any problem. Taking larger hookahs may be harder to carry on because they are bigger in size.

My friends and I were at the Spot a couple nights in Encino, CA and we came across a very delicious flavor by Starbuzz. We had selected Code 69 Starbuzz Hookah Tobacco. This flavor was mixed with all sorts of flavoring and it was absolutely fruity and mild. It somewhat tasted like a Sangria.

I recently visited New York City and I was in the mood for some Middle Eastern food and I was recommend to a restaurant located in East Village named Le Souk. I made reservations and headed to the restaurant at 10PM. When I arrived there was no room to walk in and, of course, they had lost my reservation. But nonetheless I flirted my way through with the hostess and she sat down my friends and I downstairs where it was jammed packed with beautiful and hip people. She sat us down somewhere really good where we had a view of the male belly dancer and the crowd. I was very impressed with Le Souk's decor because it was very detailed and cultural looking. My friends and I ordered food, which I was pretty good. Definitely not your traditional Middle Eastern appetite but it fit the agenda quite well. After we were done eating, we jammed to the music and surprisingly did not order any hookah but shared one with the girls next to us. We did, however, purchase a bottle of vodka for the first part of the night at 1AM and drank till we headed out to another club. After we ate, the bottom floor was cleared out and the DJ played a lot good jams, primarily house and the whole mood of the place changed tremendously. This restaurant is definitely a must and make sure to ask to be sat at the bottom and do not get frustrated if your food comes late. Simply enjoy the setting and the place you are at. Le Souk in New York is a fabulous restaurant.

Hookah Bars are just cool. Between the age of 18-22, there's really not much to do than study, drink beer illegally, go to date parties, party at frats and well, of course, go to a hookah bar. The hookah bars caters to the x and y generation like no tomorrow. Being restricted to go to bars that serve alcohol, the smoking alternative seems to provide a lot of entertainment to many preadults. So when you go to a hookah, you may find groups of young adults sitting in groups and chatting to Arabic music and smoking away their hookah. When I was first introduced to Fumari, I was in my Freshman year of college and a couple buddies of mine took a trip down to San Diego. Since I was 18 years of age at that time, it was pretty difficult to get into bars around the Gas Lamp district until we came across a long line of young girls waiting to be sat at a place I later became familiarized to be called Fumari Lounge. We waited only 5 minutes and sat down in their front patio and ordered my first Fumari tobacco blend hookah. If I am not mistaking, we ordered their Peach flavor tobacco, which tasted delicious. They also at the time used Japanese coals, which was a step ahead of the hot dog style cafe coals. My friends and I fell in love with their tobacco and ended up purchasing like 5 100grams of Fumari Tobacco to take back home because at the time they had no online presence nor were they as branded as today. Five years later, Fumari is attempting to capture the hearts of national and global audience, and introduce their product to the world. Fumari Tobacco has changed significantly from selling their tobaccos in tubs to a more mainstream, branded packaging. Overall, the lounge had to be one of the best I have been to and the tobacco blend at the time was great. I have yet to try any of their flavors, but I am guessing they are as good as before.

Exotica Charcoals are one of the best coals on the market today. We have tasted a lot of charcoals over the years, and I think a perfect type of coal has finally been produced by Exotic Imports.

Exotica coals take only 3-4 minute to light depending on the heat of the stove. In addition, the coals are easy to split in half if you cut half an inch into the coal with a knife. I am not an expert nor a doctor in the field of science to provide any professional advice on which is worse. However, I suspect that both types of smoking is critical to your health and they are both equally bad. A hookah is meant to be smoked in moderation and not everyday like a cigarette. A hookah is suggested once or twice a month during social gatherings. But today's youth take advantage of this cultural work of art and abuse their privileges. So the answer to your question Chris, they are both equally bad to your health and please do not forget that a hookah is used for recreational sessions and not an everyday habit.

Mint Water in Hookah

We recently decided to buy Mint Water by Metro and place it inside my water. I poured 50% of the Mint Water in my Hookah vase and placed about 10 ice cubes to cool the mint water within my vase. I then lit the coal and packed my bowl and began smoking my hookah. In about my 5 hit I felt a subtle minty taste in my mouth. This new discovery went really well with my Starbuzz Blueberry Grape. The water company has other flavors which I have yet to try with my hookah. In the past, I have used rose water which works wonders, henceforth to giving this one a try.

One of the first times, the hookah was shown to an audeince of Americans was had to be in the Disney cartoon called Alice in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll. In this short segment from the film, we see the catepillar smoking away on an ancient hookah pipe. It is remarkable to see that this film was rated G for a general audience to view in 1951.

A hookah session typically takes 45-60 minutes depending on the type of charcoal and tobacco you use. Moist tobacco mixed molasses may take a longer time to burn than dried tobacco. In addition, various types of charcoals give off different amount of heat. We also recommend that you place the charcoal on the side of the bowl and that you double foil.

Placing the tobacco in the middle may cause the tobacco to become burnt and a harsh taste in your mouth. Also, we suggest that the charcoal is fully lit and natural. Artificial charcoal may burn your tobacco quicker causing a bad session of Hookah.

Furthermore, make sure that your tobacco is fresh and not old. The older the tobacco, the more dry it becomes causing a shorter session.

How do you clean your hookah hose?

A question was posed in our Hookah Genie chat room on how you clean your hookah hose. We have found that blowing into your hose to let out all the debris is the best way to keep it clean. After you are done blowing air into the hose to blow out all the debris, we advise you hold the hookah hose from the middle shake it so any lose debris will fall out. We recommend a hose to be replaced every 3 months as rusts and unhealthy charcoal particles build into the hose. If you don't believe me; simple cut open the hose and you can see exactly what I am talking about. It is not most appetizing scene in the world.

A common misconception is to put water into your hose. The water completely messes up the hose and cause rust to occur inside the hookah hose, which is harmful to breathe into your lungs. A hookah hose contains wires through out the whole thing, so imagine wetting metal and letting it stay out for a day. The only washable types of hose are the ones made of rubber pipes that do not have anything inside of them like metal wiring.
