I’m sure you’ve been wondering…Helen, where’s your Heart 2 Heart Challenge this week…well, with my trip and getting caught up…I decided to incorporate the Heart 2 Heart Challenge into this week’s Scrapbook Challenge – consider it a two-for-one!

The Heart 2 Heart Challenge is to use include fancy folds on your card or other projects. I create a series of interlocking box pleats in two directions to come up with my own “folded paper” that I could use on this scrapbook layout.

This is the Color Celebration pattern on page 30 of the Cherish How-To Book. Since the fancy folded section is more decoration…I didn’t want to hide it behind photos, so this layout gives it a chance to shine.

The fancy folded section has lots of depth to it. To balance that, I popped up the Sweet Leaf photo mats, which gave me the ability to create a little pocket for a pull-out journaling block. I’m thinking this will be a great place to put some of our scoresheets from playing the game May I?

Speaking of May I…which is a version of contract rummy, for the title, I had to get creative. The stamp set I was using didn’t have a question mark. I looked at the alphabet and numbers with a creative eye and realized I could use the number 2 and mask off the bottom, then use the period for the bottom of the question mark! Hooray!

I know…you’re saying Helen…tell us HOW to do those folds….okay, okay…on with the tutorial.

Tutorial

Start with a 12″ x 12″ piece of Tulip cardstock. On a diagonal, score at 1.5″ from the corner and at 1/4″ from that score. Tip: Work on the reverse side of the Versamat to have something soft underneath for scoring.

Repeat completely across the paper. Now, alternately fold up or down (if you do origami, it would be valley and mountain folds). Tip: I used a quilting ruler which has 45 degree angle lines on it, making it perfect to line up with the outer edges of the cardstock. Your piece will look like this. Now, open up and lay flat.

Repeat making diagonal score lines in the opposite direction, such that the lines cross the previous lines. Now fold all those scores as before….and then, for the fun part…fold all scores such that you have a piece like this…

While you could use a very strong adhesive to maintain the folds, I opted to give the piece more interest by adding brads at the intersections. Tip: Make sure you’re using the piercing tool foam mat underneath to pierce the holes. To make the brad prongs completely flat, after opening the prongs, use the back end of the piercing tool to push on the center of the open prongs and they’ll go flat!

I went through and put brads on the entire folded piece of cardstock before cutting it. I was able to get both 4″ x 8″ pieces for this scrapbook layout from the ONE folded piece. It really is amazing at how much the 12″ x 12″ piece of cardstock will shrink as a result of all the folds. Take a look here for other fold ideas…and to share YOUR creation!

***

Do you like using page maps or page sketches…email me for free sample PDFs of the CTMH How-To Books to try. And…if you’re big into card making, there are how-to books for that too!

For those in my Get More Done club or who have done my Cherry-O Scrapbook Workshop, you can recreate this layout using the patterned papers left in your kit – you will need additional solid cardstock.

If you get lost along the way…here’s the complete list of all hoppers.

***

Are you inspired by this blog? One of the ways you can help support this blog is by ordering your Close To My Heart products through me. You can order from me 24/7 at: http://heleno.myctmh.com or email me at helen@hookedonstamping.com.

***

Tutorial:

Using Versamark ink and the Count stamp – stamp on a scrap of White Daisy cardstock. While ink is still wet, pour Black Embossing Powder over image. Remove excess and set with heat tool. Tip: I like to use a small paintbrush to remove any stray embossing powder. Tip: Do not handle the face of the paper you’re going to be embossing to prevent finger oils from getting on the paper…which will grab the embossing powder. Tip: Heat the image until the embossing powder changes to shiny…if you overheat it, the paper will absorb the embossing powder and it will lose it’s shine.

Using a sponge dauber, ink around the edges of the embossed image using Gypsy ink. Cut out.

Using a Blending Pen and various inks (Sunflower, Pear, Sunset and Sky), pick up ink from either the ink pad directly or the lid…that’s my preference. Tip: With the ink pad closed, gently squeeze the lid so it touches the ink pad – it will pick up ink that you can grab with the blending pen or a waterbrush. Tip: To clean your blending pen…just scrub the tip on a piece of scratch paper until it is clear.

The Lagoon card base is 4.5″ x 4.5″. Using 3D Foam Tape, adhere the embossed image to the reverse side of the Gypsy dot (revers is a percentage of Sunset). Tip: 3D Foam Tape can just be torn with your fingers…so easy!

Add two green Twinkle brads to the top right. The Black cardstock strip is 0.5″ x 4.5″ and is covered with Prisma Glitter. First coat the strip with Bonding Memories Glue, then apply the Prisma Glitter. Tip: Attach the strip to the card first will make it easier. Use the Bonding Memories smaller glue pen for more control. Keep a damp paper towel handy to pick up errant glitter.

I am having so much fun travelling cross-country with two of my three boys – Robert & Kenneth. We’re driving Robert’s car out to Washington…state that is…for college. One of the highlights of our trip – a stop at one of Rick Bayless’ restaurants, XOCO (pronounced cho-ko).

I used a set of Reflections patterns found in Studio J – this is something new that’s been recently added…so exciting! These are the Sidebar – Photo Accent and Sidebar – Balancing Act patterns.

A couple Studio J tips for you:

You can resize an object, then use copy & paste to use it over and over again.

You can change the color of your text to match your papers.

You can use coordinating colors of cardstock and embellishments that aren’t in the featured kit — like the Bamboo cardstock for my bases & the journaling block.

And…you can change a journaling spot to a photo – I did that to be able to use the XOCO awning as my title for the website.

Do you like using page maps or page sketches…email me for free sample PDFs of the CTMH How-To Books to try. And…if you’re big into card making, there are how-to books for that too!

You can recreate this layout using the Magic Moments level 2 paper pack and My Stickease, plus Sweet Leaf ribbons and assorted color brads. Or…just play in Studio J!

Speaking of Studio J…starting September 1st, you’ll be able to get discounted layouts with a Studio J membership.

Question for you…I’m looking into hosting an online class for using Studio J – would you be interested? Please leave me a comment about what you’d like to learn.

***

Pull out some OTHER papers and see what YOU come up with using this pattern. Have fun playing with this layout. I’d love to see what you create!

1.Post the photos on my Facebook Fan Page – you can upload them into the photo album there.

Stitching on cards or scrapbook layouts can add such a beautiful touch – whether it’s real stitching using Embroidery Floss or faux stitching using stamps.

After creating the Scrapbook Challenge layout last week, I had enough scraps left to make a card. I added cardstock for the card base and the Indian Corn Blue cardstock.

I really love the flower in the Triple Play mini album stamp set and it makes a great focal point.

Using Indian Corn Blue, stamp the large flower off to the corner of a 2.5″ x 2.5″ panel. Using Desert Sand, stamp the leaves. Using Indian Corn Blue and second generation stamping, stamp the sentiment and the center of the flower. Using Desert Sand, stamp the “faux stitching” along the tan border.

For added interest for the flower, pierce holes through each open area. Now create French Knots. Tip: When making French Knots on cardstock, come up through the hole, wrap the floss around the needle three times, hold taut and put the needle back through the same hole…keep holding tension on the floss until the needle pulls the rest of the floss through the wraps and voila – a perfect French Knot!

The Heart 2 Heart challenge this week is to use stitching on your project. I’d love to see what you create!

There’s nothing more exciting then opening a new Idea Book and seeing all the new products…wait, there is something more exciting…seeing all those new products used in fabulous artwork! We’re celebrating the Autumn/Winter 2010 CTMH Idea Book with a bang – a New Product Blog Hop. If you came from my friend Georgia’s blog, you’re on the right track! If you’re just joining in…grab a cup of your favorite beverage, a notebook & pen (so you can jot down your wish list)…then, sit back and savor the eye candy!

I love cute monsters…I do…really, I do. Maybe it’s because I have three boys?!? Anyhow, there’s a absolutely adorable monster set that I just had to play with. Isn’t he precious? This also uses the new papers from the Hooligans Level 2 Paper Pack and the Pear Mini-Medley Accents Collection.

With the Autumn/Winter Idea 2010 Idea Book, CTMH is introducing 8 new colors in the Summer Pallete: Smoothie, Gypsy, Pear, Lagoon, Pacifica, Sunset, Sky and Cotton Candy.

Here are three of the new colors that I’ll be using for this project.

Using the edge of the ink pad, swipe stripes of color in small patches on a piece of Pear cardstock.

Repeat using Gypsy and Lagoon.

Now…use that for the base of the card.

All pieces are edges using Gypsy ink.

Stamp the monster using Black ink on a scrap of White Daisy cardstock. Using a Blending Pen, pick up color from an ink pad…or squish the ink pad lid to the pad (it’s flexible so you can do this), and then pick up the ink from the lid. Cut out the moster. Attach to card using 3D Foam Tape.

One of the things I love about being a CTMH Consultant is how willing other consultants are to share their ideas, their talents and their artwork. On the CTMH bulletin boards, Connie Macfarlane of Canada shared how she used the Triple Play album pages to make a scrapbook layout – what a brilliant idea!

I used the Magician’s Choice pattern on page 117 of the new Magic How-To book. This layout has lots of 3″ x 3″ pieces, perfect for using the pages from the Triple Play mini album kit, since those pages are 4″ x 12″. I added were the two sheets of Colonial White for the bases, two sheets of Indian Corn Blue for the 2nd layer, a 5.5″ x 2.5″ piece of Colonial White cardstock for the journaling block and 3D Foam Tape to pop a few of the die-cuts. Everything else you see comes in the Triple Play mini album kit.

Here are a few close-ups…top right corner of the left page. The center of the large flower and the smaller flower are popped.

Title area…the scallops were cut just following the scallops on the scraps. Tip: Use two scallop sections, and cover where they meet behind the flower…that’s a great way to stretch your papers further. The center of the large flower and the small flower are popped.

Top left corner of the right page. Note: Use the little button stitch stamp to add “stitching” in various places around the patterned papers & photos. The center of the large flower is popped and the arched section is from the front cover piece, folded to create a pocket!

Do you like using page maps or page sketches…email me for free sample PDFs of the CTMH How-To Books to try. And…if you’re big into card making, there are how-to books for that too!

For those in my Get More Done club or who have done my Passages Scrapbook Workshop, you can recreate this layout using the patterned papers left in your kit – you will need additional solid cardstock.

It’s hard to believe that in a week, Andrew head back to school…college that is! As a bakery & pastry arts major at Johnson & Wales, Andrew’s told us that they don’t have “recipes” they have “formulas”…so, guess this is really a formula book.

I know…you’re thinking, cherries…for a guy?!? Yes…after all, Andrew is in bakery & pastry arts – he uses lots of fruit (cherry pies, lemon meringue, and more). To give it the manly look, I added some heavy metal….brads that is!

And…here’s a view from the side…

This ties in perfectly with the Heart 2 Heart challenge – creating something with the theme of Back to School. Here’s wishing Andrew a FABULOUS Sophomore year and I look forward to trying to “formulas” this book is filled with.

Yesterday, at my niece’s birthday party, my brother, Robert, took my son, Andrew, out on the jet ski for the first time. Andrew said it was, “AWESOME!” I really wanted to play with the NEW Magnifique papers (coming September 1st) and thought….hmmm….can I make these work for a jet-ski scrapbook layout.

This is the Ta-Da! pattern on page 70 of the new Wishes How-To Book. You’re going to fall in love with the new patterns, interactive layouts and it even comes with a DVD with tutorials – how cool!

I modified the title area to fit my longer title and make it more masculine than the wavy title that the pattern showcases. There’s a template on the DVD for the wavy title block.

To tie the two pages together, I used the same ribbon treatment on the right page, then added some buttons & brads for interest. The Colonial White pieces were stamped using the flourish in the Circle of Love stamp set. Flourishes were stamped with Lagoon, then I used a waterbrush to pull color into the open areas. The sentiment is from the Unity stamp set.
