Talented Lauralton Duo

MILFORD — Long before coming together to form one of the most potent backcourts in the state, Lauralton Hall guards Michelle DeSantis and Carly Fabbri used to play against one another.

Sometimes it was one-on-one, other times it was H-O-R-S-E. They played in between Quinnipiac University men’s and women’s practices on Burt Kahn Court. Quinnipiac was a second home to both of them. DeSantis is the daughter of former Bobcats men’s coach Joe DeSantis, and Fabbri is the daughter of current women’s coach Tricia Fabbri.

They both grew up sitting on the team bench, tagging along for the long bus rides to away games and shooting around with players.

“I’ve been around it for so long,” said Carly Fabbri, a sophomore from Stratford. “I’ve been in the locker room since I was four. It’s always helped me. I’ve been lucky to have that kind of experience.”

“I’ve learned so much,” said Michelle DeSantis, a junior from Trumbull. “Sitting in on locker room talks, going to practices, watching film with my dad, just being around the environment. They were like my big brothers.”

Each has their favorite players and games that stand out, too. Both remember being on the bench for buzzer-beating wins over Central Connecticut State. Michelle DeSantis loved watching former speedy point guard Rob Monroe. For Carly Fabbri, it was Guilford native and former Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year Brianna Rooney.

Being around the game so much clearly rubbed off on Michelle DeSantis and Carly Fabbri. Having the experience of growing up around a Division I team has certainly benefitted the two. And talent is in their genes as well. Both Joe DeSantis and Tricia Fabbri starred at Fairfield before coaching at Quinnipiac.

Standing 5-foot-5, Michelle DeSantis is a true point guard in every sense. She’s quick, unselfish, sees the floor well, can handle the ball and is very strong defensively.

“If I have to play against her in practice, I’m dreading it,” Carly Fabbri said. “She’s a great player and I love playing with her.”

Then there is the Crusaders 5-6 fearless sharpshooter Carly Fabbri. She tore her ACL in third game of her freshman season (Rooney also tore her ACL and helped Carly Fabbri along during the rehab process). But she is back at full strength and has been a force this season for Lauralton Hall.

“She gives the whole team a spark,” said Michelle DeSantis, who helped persuade Carly Fabbri to join her at Lauralton Hall. “She’s never afraid. I feel comfortable putting the ball in her hands and having her on the court with me.”

It’s been a treat for Joe DeSantis and Tricia Fabbri to watch their daughters grow up together and now play high school ball together. Tricia Fabbri jokingly called her daughter Quinnipiac’s hydration specialist. She was the Bobcats water girl since age 7. She knew who to give the water to and which players to avoid when they were mad.

“She’s been in the locker room for tough losses and big wins,” Tricia Fabbri said. “It’s a luxury. I miss having her, but she’s carving her own path in high school.”

And perhaps that path will eventually lead her back to Quinnipiac. Playing for her mother is something the Fabbris discuss. Tricia Fabbri says she would love to keep her daughter home, but knows eventually there will be a long list of schools interested in her.

“I definitely would love to play at Quinnipiac just because I’ve grown up there,” Carly Fabbri said. “My mom as my coach, I think I’d like it. It’d be a little odd, but I’d love it in the long run. I know I wouldn’t get any special treatment. If anything, I think she’d be harder on me.”

For Tricia Fabbri, she keeps a pretty busy schedule coaching the Bobcats.

Joe DeSantis is now running The DeSantis Basketball Academy and serves as color commentator for Fairfield men’s basketball on the radio and television. He also has a son, Greg DeSantis, who is playing basketball at Southern New Hampshire.

Still, both Joe DeSantis and Tricia Fabbri are familiar faces in the crowd at Lauralton Hall games, watching as their daughters have gone from witnessing some special moments at Quinnipiac to creating some of their own at Lauralton Hall.

“It’s nice see them develop into young ladies,” Joe DeSantis said. “I remember them running on around on Burt Kahn Court. They play so well together. They took it from messing around as little kids, to AAU and now playing in high school together.”

Boys Basketball: Northwest Catholic Faces DeMatha In Hoophall Classic

The name "DeMatha" brings instant thoughts of a nationally ranked and regarded program. Coach Morgan Wootten, Adrian Dantley and the rest.

Well, Northwest Catholic plays DeMatha, No. 5 in the national ESPN Fab 50 high school rankings, Saturday night in the Hoophall Classic at Springfield College.

Northwest Catholic, No. 3 in The Courant state ratings, is the underdog. Still, the opportunity to play such a team is great for the Indians.

For aspiring college players, like Kuran Iverson and Zack Lewis to name two Northwest Catholic players, this game will be beneficial. Of course, this pair and others play AAU ball and are familiar with some if not all of the DeMatha players.

Coming at midseason, this game will provide Northwest Catholic coach John Mirabello with a read on how well his team is performing and what areas it can try to improve upon.

ND-Fairfield Expels Senior Point Guard

According to sources, senior point guard Trey McPherson and freshman Marcus Blackwell are no longer a part of the ND-Fairfield basketball program and the school. Both were expelled for school related incidents according to school officials and Coach Vin Laczkoski.

Eligibility of Bassick's Thomas Remains Question a Mark

The eligibility of Bassick standout swingman Demetrius Thomas remains uncertain.

Thomas didn't play in the Lions' season opening win over McMahon on Dec. 14 due to a "coach's decision," according to Bassick asssitant Bernie Lofton. He also didn't play in Bassick's 86-85 overtime loss at Danbury Tuesday night for "academic reasons."

Thomas practiced with the Lions on Wednesday, but is unlikely to play Friday at Westhill until some issues are sorted out.

At the heart of the issue, according to Lofton, is the new academic standards enacted by the Bridgeport school system for the 2011-12 season, where all athletes must maintain at least a 2.6 GPA in "four core" subjects. Lofton said that Thomas didn't receive a grade in an astronomy class in the fall because the class was taught by a substitute and a full-time teacher wasn't hired until the marking period was almost over. Lofton is hopeful that the situation will be resolved by the end of the next marking period.

"It's an in-house issue," Lofton said.

Lofton also said he didn't expect the Lions (5-1) to forfeit any of the games Thomas played in since he met the standards in place by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference where a student-athlete only must pass four courses.

When reached for comment Wednesday, CIAC director of information Matt Fischer said he hadn't heard anything about Thomas' eligibility and that it was up to the school to self-report any potential violations.
