If you're not already acquainted with this special day, here is some background on it from the honoree.

"It's that time again... the officially unofficial Ballast Point Day is coming up again on May 18th and we have something special planned. It all started a few years back when we were honored enough to have a day named after us in the City of San Diego... and we have decided to keep the celebration going. This year we decided that one day just wasn't long enough, so now we have a week of events in all of our tasting rooms to highlight the beers that built Ballast Point... come join us!"

IPA’s have killed my sweet tooth!

When I was younger I loved sweets. As I’ve gotten older I’ve lost the sweet tooth I once had. I don’t mind dessert every once in a while, but the cravings of my youth have subsided. Now I can take it or leave it. True, age may be a factor. When we are young we want and do a lot of things that we grow out of with maturity. However, thinking about it more, I truly believe that my sweet tooth was dealt its final, fatal blow by my love of IPA’s! Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Belgian tripel or quadrupel, barrel-aged stout, and barleywine from time to time, but my heart belongs to the mighty IPA. My style of choice, it is the beer I turn to most. With the bitter beating my palate takes on a regular basis, I have to think that my love of hops has extracted my sweet tooth once and for all. To be perfectly honest, I’m okay with that. Until they invent hop cake, pie, or ice cream (hmmm…), I’ll stick to my IPA’s. Come to think of it, my dentist is probably okay with it as well!

Perhaps farewell is a better word. Still, I will miss the South Park location when it closes its doors on June 5th, as it was my go-to spot for Stone growler fills. Read about the closing here. I guess I'll be going to Liberty Station or downtown San Diego from now on. What about you? Will this closing have an impact on where you get your Stone fix?

Balance

A concept that is easy to comprehend, yet difficult to achieve, I find it sorely lacking in my life. I set a goal of posting something every single day of 2013, which I did. Is that balanced? In 2014 I posted a total of 13 times. Is that balanced? The answers are, of course, subjective, but deserve my attention. Did I overdo one year and get lazy the next? Were my priorities out of whack in 2013, with moderation taking its rightful place in 2014? Did I have too much to say, or simply not enough? The answers may never truly come to light, but correction can be made. Correction in the form of balance. I need balance. My new goal is to find the balance that is currently lacking. Finding that balance will result in more posts this year than last, but not the overabundance of years past. I look forward to more posts this year, and finding that balance that I may or may not have had ever before. I enjoy beer, and want to enjoy it the way it's meant to be enjoyed, with balance!

I love this review of Green Flash Road Warrior Imperial Rye IPA by The Beer Rover. I have yet to try this beer, but after reading this it is high on my priority list of new beers to try. I'll give you my opinion once I do.

World Beer Cup 2014

"The most prestigious beer competition in the world", the World Beer Cup, announced the 2014 winners yesterday. The complete list can be found here. Huge kudos to Coronado Brewing Co. who took home the World Beer Cup Champion Brewery and Brewmaster Mid-Size Brewing Company award. Nice job, guys! Congratulations to all the winners, we'll see you again in 2016!

I've been sick for the past few days and behind on posting on the latest news from Santee's Manzanita Brewing Co. They posted the following announcement on their Facebook page last Wednesday.

"Some may have noticed the recent updates and changes going here at the brewery, we wanted to keep all our fans in the know. As we looked at all the branding aspects of Manzanita, we realized that what we loved the most about our company, and what it stands for is the Manzanita Tree. This twisted tree that grows wild throughout California, is the centerpiece of our namesake. With that in mind we made the bold move, while revamping our logos, to also add Twisted to our name. Check out www.twistedmanzanita.com for more details."

After 4 years of brewing the beer, branding the product, and building the fan base, I'm not sure a name change is a move that I would have made. However, it's not up to me, and I'm sure they know what they're doing. "Manzanita Brewing Co." is now "Twisted Manzanita". I hope the change proves to be a good one, and I look forward to what the future holds for them.

There is no "craft beer" crisis!

This interesting article about the recent decline in domestic beer sales poses the question, "Is America facing a beer crisis?" The article points out that there is an exception to this decline. Craft beer. Surprising? Not at all.

I arrived home the other day to find my daughters playing outside with my neighbor's son. They immediately ran up to the car as I opened my door to get out. I was holding a Rockstar Energy Drink as I exited the car and the little boy asked me why I was drinking it. My 6-year-old daughter spoke right up. "That's a beer!", she exclaimed, "My dad LOVES beer!" I quickly corrected her as to what I was drinking but could only imagine how many people heard the loud proclamation. I wonder how many neighbors I've offended this time?

I saw someone in a Magnetic Brewing sweatshirt at SeaWorld the other day. I don't know when the new brewery will be opening, but it appears from posts and photos on their Facebook page that it should be fairly soon. I'm always excited to visit a new brewery, and this one will be no exception. I wish them well and am looking forward to sampling their brews.

Here is another example of "the big guy" bullying "the little guy". In this case, they are completely different industries. How in the world can Starbucks feel threatened by a small craft brewery in Missouri? This is just more fuel to fire my ongoing distaste for the coffee behemoth. Brew on, Exit 6 Brewery, brew on!
