"Imagine Me" Body Image Art Competition

In an attempt to promote healthy awareness and acceptance of body image, the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals Foundation (iaedp) has created the "Imagine Me" body image art competition. In its third year of competition, mannequins are used as a unique and realistic palette for artistic expression. This Body Image Mannequin Art competition was created in 2010 as an important part of iaedp's annual education symposium.

While this contest is open to the public, iaedp strongly supports the involvement of national and international treatment centers and private practices. Entries are accepted from October 1, 2012 through January 15, 2013 and are judged on clarity of theme, creativity and originality, quality of composition and design, and the overall impression/presentation. Mannequins can be male or female forms in different body shapes and sizes, and entries must be electronically submitted to iaedp using photographs in jpeg format. Winning mannequin entries will be revealed and spotlighted at the 2013 Annual Symposium in Las Vegas, where they will be auctioned off with proceeds going towards the iaedp Foundation.

A process addiction is an addiction to an activity or process, such as eating, spending money, or gambling. In this one-hour presentation, Dr. Marcia Nickow and Roseann Rook will discuss process addictions that may either co-occur with eating disorders or emerge during the eating disorder recovery process.

Additionally, the presentation will address underlying trauma often associated with process addictions as well as the benefit of group psychotherapy and 12-step fellowships.

About the Presenters

At Timberline Knolls, Dr. Nickow oversees a clinical team of primary therapists, substance abuse specialists, eating disorders treatment specialists and others. She also conducts intensive individual, family and group psychotherapy with adults and adolescents. Dr. Nickow is currently co-authoring a manual for the American Group Psychotherapy Association on group psychotherapy for the treatment of process addictions.

Roseann conducts assessments, facilitates both educational and process-oriented groups, and meets with residents individually at Timberline Knolls. She focuses on relapse prevention and 12-step work in addiction treatment and co-occurring disorders, such as process

addictions, cross addictions or eating disorders.

In preparation for the iaedp Symposium 2013, the iaedp Foundation is inviting eating disorder professionals to submit an abstract on inventive treatment modalities for the various phases of the eating disordered client's journey. Treatment providers from all disciplines are encouraged to innovatively convert continuing research, treatment updates, and brain imaging into meaningful treatment protocols for eating disorders. The iaedp Foundation is seeking submissions for individuals, groups, and family work which will assist clinicians in diverse treatment settings.

Two-Day International Conference to be held in Jerusalem for Eating Disorder Professionals

Aiming to present a comprehensive and informative program for a wide range of eating disorder professionals, including therapists, nurses, dietitians, and medical doctors, the Israel Association for Eating Disorders will host a two-day international conference in Jerusalem, Israel. Scheduled to take place on February 4th-5th, 2013, the conference will include world renowned experts and focus on the consensus and controversy surrounding treatment modalities for eating disorders. In addition, the conference will have clinical priorities, offering professionals who treat eating disorders and obesity the chance to broaden their knowledge and expertise.

Women Over The Age Of 50 With Eating Disorders

This past week the International Journal of Eating Disorders published research which took a unique perspective featuring women over the age of 50. The research was conducted on 1,849 women through an online survey. Cindy Bulk, who is the director of the eating disorders program at the University of North Carolina was clearly trying to prove a point that eating disorders do not discriminate by age. Stereotypically we all seem to believe that eating disorders affect young women in their teenager years; however, this is far from the truth! The results of the research found that 79% of women over the age of 50 answered that their weight or shape affected their self-perception, 41% checked their body daily, 36% spent at least half of their time in the last five years dieting, and 13.3% reported having symptoms of eating disorders. The roles of women in our culture has morphed and the pressure to be perfect is outstanding. This may be a part of the reason why these women are also afraid to ask and receive help. It is just as crucial for this group of sufferers to receive help as anyone else who is a victim of an eating disorder yet are highly ignored. These abstracts can potentially be presented at the Symposium 2013, which will be held at the Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort and Spa on March 21-24. Dr. Susan Kelly-Weeder of Boston College investigated the co-occurrence of disordered eating and binge drinking in samples of college men and women. The purpose of her studies is to explore the variety of disordered eating practices that often go hand in hand with binge drinking behaviors.

Diagnostic changes to the DSM-V

Researchers and clinicians have long depended on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association, to delineate and identify all mental disorders, including eating disorders. A revised copy of the DSM-V is anticipated publication in 2013 with modifications to the eating disorder category. Such revisions may include removing the criteria for amenorrhea for anorexia and officially making binge eating disorder a diagnostic category. These upcoming diagnostic changes, though predominately affecting researchers and clinicians, may aid those who are suffering from eating disorders by helping with insurance coverage and allow diagnosis of those dealing with less severe eating disorders.

The Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) Fellowship Committee is pleased to announce the 2011 call for Fellowship Applications.
The AED awards Fellow status to recognize distinguished contributions made by AED members to the field of eating disorders. The list of AED Fellows reflects a diversity of distinguished contributions to the field--and the interdisciplinary and international composition of the AED’s membership.
Eligibility for Fellowship is open to those who have been full AED members in good standing for at least five years.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The status of Fellow in the Academy of Eating Disorders presupposes that the qualifications of the person have elevated him or her to national and/or international recognition as a distinguished contributor to the field of eating disorders. In virtually all instances "distinguished" refers to a combination of the achievement of excellence and significant contributions deserving of recognition as extraordinary. The contributions of the person nominated have to be demonstrably unusual, innovative, and/or of a pioneering nature. Fellowship status is not conferred simply on the basis of seniority or competence.
The Fellowship Committee is thus looking to recognize candidates who have maintained AED membership in good standing continuously for at least the past five years, and who clearly have made one or more of the following contributions to the field:
(1) Distinguished, sustained research-based scholarship that has contributed significantly to the professional literature;
(2)   Distinguished and sustained contributions to literature designed for lay audiences (e.g., people with eating disorders; families; advocates and activists);
(3)   Distinguished, sustained, nationally- and/or internationally-recognized contributions to clinical services and/or prevention;
(4)   Distinguished and sustained contributions to of the leadership and activities of the Academy of Eating Disorders;
(5)   Distinguished and sustained contributions to advocacy in the context of government or other major organizations.
ALL APPLICATIONS must be complete and received by no later than 4 p.m., Monday, January 9, 2012 (Eastern Standard Time). Send the application materials to fellows@aedweb.org.
ALL APPLICATIONS must be supported by:
--A cover letter detailing (using specific examples and other evidence) how the candidate meets the criteria for Fellowship;
--An up-to-date curriculum vitae; and
--Two letters of recommendation that address in detail, including specific examples, how the candidate meets the criteria for Fellowship. For example, a referee would need to support in detail, with specific examples, the applicant’s contention that she or he has made a significant, distinguished impact on AED and the field of eating disorders through his or her service to the organization.
The Fellowship Committee would prefer that candidates submit the letters of recommendation along with their cover letter and vita, but referees (i.e., recommenders) may, if they prefer, submit their evaluations under separate cover.
