It is a weekly meme hosted by Tabitha in which participants share a favorite quote.

Until recently, my tag line here was a quote from Dag Hammerskjöld, who served as the U.N. Secretary-General from 1953 until his tragic death in 1961. President John F. Kennedy called him “the greatest statesman of our century” and he remains the only person to have received a Nobel Peace Prize posthumously. After his death, his diary was published. Therein, he described himself as a Christian mystic who viewed his diplomatic endeavors as an “inner journey.” Hammerskjöld said:

Never look down to test the ground before taking your next step;
only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find the right road.

Outside my window . . . the sun is shining, but it is only about 59 degrees and the forecast high temperature for today is only 82 degrees, a distinct difference from the 108 degrees we endured just one week ago.

I am thinking . . . about the discussion taking place on television at this moment about the resignation of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Speculation about her reasons continues. I am sure that we will hear “the rest of the story” in a few days. For my part, I just hope that the commentators who are saying that she committed political suicide by resigning are accurate. I would be delighted never to hear anything about her ever again.

I am thankful for . . . the fact that I live in America where I can express my opinions freely, as can my fellow citizens. And we can agree to disagree without being disagreeable. I am aware that many believers are big fans of Palin and respect their various viewpoints, but I do not share their enthusiasm.

From the kitchen . . . I hear the icemaker working.

I am wearing . . . shorts and a t-shirt.

I am reading . . . blogs and newspapers online.

I am hoping . . . that the weather forecast is accurate and the cool weather will truly last all week. It is so enjoyable because I love being outside in the sun sans the intense heat.

I am creating . . . a huge pile of paper that must be shredded and discarded. I am in the process of cleaning off my desk and purging unneeded documents from my file cabinet.

I am praying . . . for a speedy resolution at California’s Capitol because the citizens of this state deserve better leadership than has been demonstrated over the past few years and has now led to a full-blown economic crisis impacting each and every resident.

Around the house . . . it is very quiet. I am the only one awake.

One of my favorite things . . . is going to the local coffee shop early in the morning and enjoying a cup or two while reading the local newspaper, chatting with the regular morning customers and staff, and watching the hustle and bustle of the city begin in earnest. I’m heading there now. Want to join me?

A few plans for the rest of the week . . . include continuing to purge, sort and organize. From my desk and file cabinet, I plan to move on to closets. I, for one, have a lot of clothing that I never wear and intend to donate it to a worthy charity.

Here is a prayer for the coming week:

May God, who puts all things together,
makes all things whole,
Who made a lasting mark through the sacrifice of Jesus,
the sacrifice of blood that sealed the eternal covenant,
Who led Jesus, our Great Shepherd,
up and alive from the dead,
Now put you together, provide you
with everything you need to please him,
Make us into what gives him most pleasure,
by means of the sacrifice of Jesus, the Messiah.
All glory to Jesus forever and always!
Oh, yes, yes, yes.

Hebrew 13:18-21 (The Message)

When it comes to an issue or truth that you believe in, maybe even feel like God revealed that truth to you; how do you respond to another Christian that might have the opposite view from you? Do you feel like the way you respond lines up with how God would want you to respond?

“Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.” (Matthew 7:1-2)

When I heard that President Barack Obama had selected Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration, I was stunned. Confused. Outraged. Offended. I felt betrayed by the man whose candidacy I supported with more vigor and enthusiasm than I have ever felt or demonstrated for any candidate. Most of all, I felt disappointed. I initially felt that the then-President-Elect had let down many of the Americans who voted for him.

After all, Pastor Rick Warren is a man who has uttered very ugly words about many of the Divine Creator’s children. Pastor Rick Warren has engaged in hate speech which has hurt many people. Pastor Rick Warren runs a program at his congregation that encourages self-hatred through efforts to convince participants that they can change the inherent and immutable qualities bestowed upon them by the Divine Creator.

When asked about his selection on December 18, 2008, then-President-Elect Obama stated:

I think it is no secret that I am a fierce advocate for equality for gay and lesbian Americans. It is something I have been consistent on and something I intend to continue to be consistent on during my presidency.

What I’ve also said is that it is important for America to come together even though we may have disagreements on certain social issues.

And I would note that a couple of years ago I was invited to Rick Warren’s church to speak, despite his awareness that I held views entirely contrary to his when it came to gay and lesbian rights, when it came to issues like abortion.

Nevertheless, I had an opportunity to speak, and that dialogue, I think, is a part of what my campaign’s been all about, that we’re never going to agree on every single issue. What we have to do is create an atmosphere where we can disagree without being disagreeable, and then focus on those things that we hold in common as Americans. So Rick Warren has been invited to speak, Dr. Joseph Lowery — who has deeply contrasting views to Rick Warren about a whole host of issues — is also speaking.

During the course of the entire inaugural festivities, there are going to be a wide range of viewpoints presented and that’s how it should be. That’s part of the magic of this country — we are diverse, noisy, and opinionated. So that’s the spirit in which we have put together what I think will be a terrific inauguration and that’s hopefully going to be a spirit that carries over into my administration.

President Obama talks a great talk. But what inspired me to vote for him and has compelled me to keep faith in and with him thus far has been the quiet, dignified — yes, even elegant — way in which he also “walks the walk.” For instance, true to his espoused dedication to diversity of thought and opinion, he has not only called upon his election opponent, Senator John McCain, for advice, he spent part of his pre-inauguration evening at a dinner honoring his former nemesis.

The Divine Creator uses evil to accomplish good, so I believe that President Obama’s selection of Pastor Warren served many purposes. Certainly it demonstrated that President Obama plans to be a bold leader. After all, he and his advisers knew that selecting Pastor Warren would outrage many of his supporters, but he forged ahead.

Controversy generates discussion and Frank Sinatra is credited with noting that there is no such thing as bad publicity. So perhaps President Obama selected Pastor Warren for the express purpose of stirring up emotion because he knew that the resultant tempest would inspire conversation and, hopefully, lead Americans with divergent viewpoints to listen to each other with new ears and see each other with new eyes.

And maybe President Obama’s motives were as pure as his commentary suggests. Perhaps he was simply reaching out to a man who had once invited him into his church and given him a platform from which to share his vision for America.

We will likely never be privy to the thought processes of President Obama and his staff.

“That’s part of the magic of this country — we are diverse, noisy, and opinionated.” President Barack Obama

But on this night as I reflect back on the events of this glorious, historic day, I believe that the contributions of both Pastor Warren and Dr. Lowery to the inaugural ceremony served as a reminder to believers everywhere that the way to model Jesus’ teachings is a deceptively simply but profoundly, humanly near-impossibility: Do not judge others. It is inappropriate and, indeed, sinful to question another believer’s commitment to his/her faith or elevate our own understanding of the Gospel over our neighbor’s. Because just as we believe that the truth has been revealed to us in a tangible and intimate manner, so do our fellow believers. And because the Holy Spirit uses each and every one of us to accomplish its most holy purposes, those conflicting revelations are not accidental or random. Rather, each of us has our own relationship with the Divine Creator and we are granted knowledge and understanding in accordance with those purposes.

Pastor Warren is a child of the Divine Creator, loved unconditionally and called to serve. I reject much of what he preaches and find many of his statements abhorrent and repugnant. But I must refrain from judging him because I will be judged, as well. Rather, I am going to continue striving to reach out to people like Pastor Warren whose views do not align with my own and whose understanding of Biblical teachings stand in stark contrast to mine. President Obama is rightly calling upon all Americans to “create an atmosphere where we can disagree without being disagreeable” because within such an environment we can focus on our commonality.

Today Americans came together to celebrate our sameness and revel in our diversity. During the invocation, Pastor Warren called upon the same Divine Creator to guide our new President and bless this nation to whom I pray. He thanked the same Divine Creator that I thank every day for the many blessings we enjoy in this country, even during these challenging times.

Like my fellow citizens, I watched in awe as, with his hand upon a Bible once owned by Abraham Lincoln, a man whose “father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.” He did so on the steps of a building erected with the labor of his wife’s enslaved ancestors.

I wept along with other Americans who, like me, are old enough to remember that terrible day when a bullet ended an earthly life, but not a dream, when Pastor Warren remarked that “today Dr. King and a great cloud of witnesses are shouting in Heaven.” If I were a gambler, I would bet money that Dr. King and that group of witnesses are, like we believers on earth, “diverse, noisy, and opinionated.” What a conversation they must have had today!

My prayer for our new President and this country is that the same kind of rousing dialogue has just begun in this country and will continue throughout his term of office . . . and well beyond.

“[S]hare some of the words that were said to us, or words we said to others that were not comforting, or maybe even made the situation worse.”

I was in my early 20’s. My then-boyfriend and his lifelong best friend (whom I shall call “S”) were working for the same company. He began dating a wonderful young woman (”P”) about 19 years old who was attending the local college. P and I became good friends, and the four of us spent a lot of time together. For a few months, it was idyllic — we had a lot of fun double-dating.

At first, S appeared to have changed. Although I enjoyed his company because he was witty, intelligent, and a genuinely good friend to my boyfriend, there was one aspect of his life that, up to that point, troubled me: He was a player. He dated a lot of different girls — simultaneously. Before I realized that, I set him up with one of my good friends. Luckily, she recognized the signs and succeeded in having some fun with him for a few weeks without falling for him and getting hurt.

So when I happened upon indisputable proof that S was seeing at least one other woman while also dating P, I found myself in a quandry. Because P was developing deep, genuine feelings for S, and plainly expected their relationship to be exclusive. She was talking about having a future, long-term relationship with P, so I knew that she would be devastated when she found out that P’s commitment to her did not match her growing attachment to him.

I discussed my concerns with my boyfriend and reasonably expected him to confront S. To my surprise, he refused and demanded that I keep silent, as well. He had been down this road with S numerous times and rationalized his friend’s behavior by pointing out that, to the best of his knowledge, S had not professed love for P or ever affirmatively represented that he would date only her. My boyfriend argued that P was reading more into S’s actions than was reasonable, S had been completely honest with her, and P would — and should — figure things out on her own. My boyfriend insisted that if I told P what S was doing behind her back, S would be upset with me and that would strain my boyfriend’s long friendship with P. He did not want to risk that.

I knew he was right. If I told P, I risked blow-ups and accusations on several fronts. I also knew that my boyfriend and I had reached the beginning of the end of our own relationship.

As it turned out, I did not broach the subject with P, although I was very uncomfortable about and disappointed by my boyfriend’s reaction. P became suspicious of S’s behavior on her own and shared her fears with me. The look on my face belied the truth. I could not mislead or confuse her. Although I felt that I had honored my boyfriend’s wish because I did not volunteer the information, when I saw the hurt in P’s eyes, I refused to claim ignorance, thereby multiplying her pain, violating her trust, and destroying the friendship she and I had formed. As predicted, she could not forgive me once she knew that I had been privvy to the information for a few weeks and had kept the truth from her.

P confronted S and, although she assured him that she discovered his duplicity on her own, he did not believe her. He was convinced that I had informed her about his behavior and told my boyfriend as much. My boyfriend thought that I had betrayed him and chastised me because he thought that I had violated the promise I made him. P was simply heart-broken as only a 19-year-old in love for the first time can be and ended up not wanting anything to do with any of the three of us.

My boyfriend and S remained friends, although our double-dating days were over. My boyfriend and I stayed together for a couple more years before I had to acknowledge what I inescapably discovered as a result of this incident: I could not spend my life with a man who would ask me to hold back the truth from a friend andrefuse to believe me when I confirmed that I did what he asked in spite of my own better judgment, instead adopting his friend’s unfounded suspicions

“A lying witness is unconvincing; a person who speaks truth is respected.” (Proverbs 21:28.) At the time, I certainly didn’t feel respected. I felt betrayed and abandoned. Literally caught in the middle of a controversy I did not create and of which I wanted no part, unable to extricate myself without severe consequences no matter which way I turned, which path I chose to walk. I should have bravely and unwaveringly followed the wise advice of Zechariah 8:16-17:

But this is what you must do: Tell the truth to each other. Render verdicts in your courts that are just and that lead to peace. Don’t scheme against each other. Stop your love of telling lies that you swear are the truth. I hate all these things, says the Lord.

I have never regretted that moment when my face told the truth to my friend, P, even though my lips did not. Although I ached for and with her, I knew that my honesty was not the true source of her pain, even though I became the catalyst for her suffering. Sometimes that is how we are called to interact with and relate to each other. I learned through that experience — and have relearned so many times in the ensuring years — that we cannot control the actions of our brothers and sisters, but we can refuse to stand silent in the shadow of others’ wrongdoing. And although it may cause someone we care deeply about to feel sorrow, disappointment, betrayal or myriad other emotions, the truth is, just as my mother used to tell me when I was growing up, always “the best policy.”

My act of confirming the truth to P about her relationship with S was, initially, neither comforting nor affirming. But my prayer for her over the years has always been that she came to see, even though our friendship was irretrievably broken, that P came to appreciate my refusal to conceal S’s duplicitous treatment of her. In the years since that incident, I have often wondered what became of those three folks who played such an important — indeed, pivotal — role in my life. I hope that they learned from what we experienced together and established happy, productive lives. Most importantly, I hope that if they think of me, they do so with respect for my refusal to hide the truth.

Outside my window . . . the sun shining but there is a soft breeze and the temperature is very cool for June: 56 degrees.

I am thinking . . . about the very busy day that I have planned and wishing that I had fewer appointments and meetings to attend.

I am thankful for . . . the stability and predictability that characterizes my life. In these challenging times, those things are highly sought-after and valued. Too often I take my circumstances for granted.

From the kitchen . . . I hear the coffee maker and the lovely scent of freshly percolated hazelnut coffee is starting to fill the house.

I am wearing . . . dress slacks and a blouse.

I am reading . . . several of my favorite blogs.

I am hoping . . . that I receive good news during one of the appointments I have scheduled later in the day. If I do not receive the kind of news I am hoping for, I will need to revise some of my plans for the future.

I am creating . . . peacefulness in my life.

I am praying . . . for everyone who has been impacted by the rough economic times in which we live. Beginning today, California has imposed a 90-day moratorium on foreclosures, requiring banks to demonstrate that they are seeking creative solutions that will allow lenders to retain and remain in their homes. I hope, for the sake of my many fellow residents who are struggling to keep their homes, that the program is a success.

Around the house . . . I see so many tasks that need to be completed and pray for the time and energy to address those issues, while feeling thankful that I have a home that needs my attention.

One of my favorite things . . . is sitting quietly in the morning like this — before the demands of the day require my attention — and deliberately focusing upon all of my blessings.

A few plans for the rest of the week . . . include work, work, and more work. Hopefully, I will find time to make at least three trips to the gym to work out.

Here is a thought for you to cling to during the coming week if things look bleak:

So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.

2 Corinthians 4:16 (The Message)

Outside my window . . . there is bright, hot morning sun trying to break through the curtains.

I am thinking . . . about the fact that I have not written much in the past few weeks. It is not because there is nothing that I want to say. Rather, it is because I have so much on my mind and a lot happening in my life. This past weekend, I sat down in front of the computer several times, determined to begin writing about all that is taking place, but each time I was distracted or called away to attend to responsibilities. When the time is right, the words will flow.

I am thankful for . . . the long-planned changes in my life that are finally becoming a reality.

From the kitchen . . . comes the sound of the icemaker working to keep up with our demand for its product. Yesterday, it was 103 degrees here and the temperature is expected to reach 95 degrees today. Although we are fortunate to be able to stay inside with the air conditioner running, we seem to be drinking a lot of icy cold beverages.

I am wearing . . . a business suit.

I am reading . . . my email messages.

I am hoping . . . that I will find time this week to begin writing about the new chapter of my life that is unfolding.

I am creating . . . a new chapter of my life and it is exciting.

I am praying . . . for discernment and guidance in the days ahead.

Around the house . . . there is increasing organization as I work my way through each room, doing some much-needed “spring cleaning.”

One of my favorite things . . . is the feeling of excitement and anticipation that accompanies decision-making. After the pondering and deliberating conclude, it is exhilarating to move past that process and into the period of implementation of the choice that has been made.

A few plans for the rest of the week . . . include making time to write about the thoughts and emotions that I have been experiencing in the past few weeks, as well as my plans for the future.

Here is a picture thought for you to ponder during the coming week:

Outside my window . . . the sun is just coming up and light is beginning to peek in around the draperies.

I am thinking . . . about how tired I feel because I feel asleep late and work up early. At this rate, it might be a long day.

I am thankful for . . . this cool, clear morning and the chance for some solace before the busy week begins.

From the kitchen . . . The kitchen is still dark and silent. I have not yet made the coffee.

I am wearing . . . a comfortable old t-shirt.

I am reading . . . the online edition of the local newspaper.

I am hoping . . . that the week’s weather forecast is accurate because it calls for sunny days with temperatures in the mid-80’s. In other words, perfect spring weather should be the norm for at least the next several days.

I am creating . . . a re-envisioned living room which is why I am sitting in this room using my laptop. I am deciding whether or not I am completely satisfied with the changes I have made thus far.

I am praying . . . that a good friend whose husband died recently is experiencing healing and that her memories of a happy married life will allow her grief to gradually yield to acceptance, peacefulness, and tranquility as she contemplates what her life will be like from this point forward.

Around the house . . . all is quiet.

One of my favorite things . . . is awakening on the day after a special event, recalling what transpired, and reliving the happiest moments. In this case, I am thinking about how special and loved I felt yesterday as we celebrated Mother’s Day.

A few plans for the rest of the week . . . include dinner with the friend I mentioned above.

Here is a picture thought and favorite quote for you to ponder during the coming week:

Make use of your imagination: Be still and imagine to yourself that you saw the heavens open and the glorious choirs of cherumbims and seraphims about the throne of God. Imagine that you hear the music of those angelic voices . . . Think upon this till your imagination has carried you above the clouds, till it has placed you amongst those heavenly beings, and made you long to be a part in their eternal music.

Outside my window . . . the sun is shining, but the wind is blowing and it is only 47 degrees! The weather forecaster says the temperature will not even reach 70 degrees, describing our weather patterns as a “rollercoaster.”

I am thinking . . . about how cold it is in comparison to this time last week when we had temperatures in the 90’s.

I am thankful for . . . home and shelter from the wild weather variations.

From the kitchen . . . the smell of coffee brewing is enticing me to take a break from writing and go pour myself a cup.

I am wearing . . . a cotton nightgown that is too thin to keep me warm on this cold morning.

I am reading . . . MckMama’s last post about her sweet baby boy, Stellan. So happy to hear that his condition has stabilized over the past couple of days! Praying it remains so!

I am hoping . . . that I have minimal interruptions at work today so that I can get a lot of tasks completed.

I am creating . . . an atmosphere of calm, peacefulness, and tranquility around me so that I can get into a “zone” that is most conducive to productivity.

I am praying . . . that the will of the Divine Creator be done in all situations.

Around the house . . . all is quiet. I am the only one who is awake.

One of my favorite things . . . is being the only one awake so that I can enjoy some quiet time in my home before leaving for work.

A few plans for the rest of the week . . . a brief trip out of town for business, a couple of appointments with doctors for routine check-ups and, hopefully, lots of items checked off my “to do” list.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you, urging you to pray not just for Stellan, but for all hospitalized children, their families, and their physicians and caregivers that they be given wisdom and the gift of healing:
I am thinking . . . that I am less than thrilled that the temperature is going to soar to more than 90 degrees today. It is too early in the year and means that it might be a very long, hot summer.
I am thankful for . . . an air conditioner that works and enough money in the bank to turn it on and be able to pay the bill for the electricity when it arrives.
From the kitchen . . . I am drinking Instant Breakfast. That’s about as much breakfast as I can ever handle.
