Madison, Wis (April 29, 2011) ‚Äì Patients with multiple sclerosis are being met with even more hope at this year’s MS Walk in Madison, WI – and not just from the 1,500 participants who will be walking to raise money for multiple sclerosis research.Quincy Bioscience, a biotechnology company located in Madison, will be recruiting participants and raising awareness for an innovative study called the MS HOPE Trial.

The study offers MS patients the opportunity to enroll and participate from their own homes. Unlike conventional trials which may require blood draws and clinic visits, the MS HOPE Trial is a distance study, offering internet-based, validated, patient rating surveys that assess quality of life such as cognition, mood, sleep, and energy.

The study lasts six months and for those whom find benefit from the supplement may continue on for a full year if they choose. The study supplement containing apoaequorin is safe to take with other medications, vitamins, and supplements.

Apoaequorin is a protein derived from jellyfish which has proven neuroprotective through its ability to bind excessive calcium in neurons. Calcium is required for proper cell function however calcium levels must be tightly regulated for cell health. In human studies, apoaequorin has proven to improve cognitive function in healthy individuals over 40 years of age.

Quincy Bioscience staff will be presenting and distributing important recruitment information for the MS HOPE Trial. MS supporters can stop by the Quincy Bioscience booth to learn more about MS Hope Trials and how the jellyfish protein apoaequorin may improve the quality of life for those with MS.

Quincy Bioscience encourages the community to come out, raise awareness and support the cause for Multiple Sclerosis. The walk will be held at Warner Park in Madison, WI on Sunday, May 1, 2010 starting at 10 a.m. and is open to the public.

MS patients wishing to participate in the study can go towww.mshopetrials.org to learn more or apply.

Madison WI (June 8, 2010) HOPE Trials and Quincy Bioscience together with MS advocate and author Shelley Peterman Schwarz officially announce the launch of an innovative Multiple Sclerosis study evaluating the effect of a jellyfish protein on quality of life symptoms for people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

MSHOPE Trials is enrolling participants with all forms of multiple sclerosis at the HOPE Trials website (http://www.hopetrials.com).By utilizing the internet for both recruitment and data gathering, Quincy Bioscience will reach a large number of people who might otherwise not participate in research due to time and travel limitations.

The MS HOPE Trial is one study of several planned under HOPE Trials, a larger research initiative by Quincy Bioscience, a Madison Wisconsin based biotechnology company which has developed the use of a jellyfish protein called apoaequorin for a wide range of potential health benefits.

The research effort is driven, in part, by reports given to Quincy Bioscience of individuals with MS who experienced similar positive results taking the jellyfish protein-based supplement. The trial design is placebo-controlled and participants are blinded to which arm they are enrolled. The study is six months long and each participant will be asked to track certain functional aspects of living with MS and report their results.

In partnering with Shelley Peterman Schwarz, a strong MS advocate and someone who continues to overcome the challenges of living with MS, HOPE Trials will be able to reach many more people in the MS community across the country. Shelley has written for national publications such as Neurology Now offering valuable patient perspectives on living with multiple sclerosis.Shelley has met the challenges of MS head on and has authored several books helping others diagnosed with chronic conditions with practical tips on making life a little easier.Individuals living with MS can also find valuable information on over coming day-to-day struggles on Shelley’s websitehttp://www.meetinglifeschallenges.com.

Schwarz explains in her book Multiple Sclerosis 300 Tips for Making Life Easier the importance of being able to function cognitively.”When I was first diagnosed with MS, cognitive problems were thought to affect only a small number of people. Today, however, it is thought that between 43 and 65 percent of people who have MS have some cognitive problems. Problems with concentration, memory, processing information, or communications may be very frustrating.”

Patients with MS suffer from a decreased quality of life in many areas including memory, sleep, pain, mobility, muscle and speech difficulties. Although this is just some of the many exasperating symptoms of MS, the MS HOPE Trials study will be able to provide hope to people living with MS by improving their quality of life.

About Shelley Peterman Schwarz

Shelley Peterman Schwarz graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was a teacher of the hearing impaired in the Madison (WI) Metropolitan School District for 13 years. In 1979 Shelley learned that she had multiple sclerosis. Shelley is a motivational speaker and award-winning writer and author, her Tips for Making Life EasierTM have appeared in numerous publications including the Wisconsin State Journal, Mature Lifestyles, Arthritis Today, Neurology Now, and Inside MS. She appears monthly on the Noon News on WISC-TV, the CBS affiliate in Madison, WI.

Quincy Bioscience announces the launch ofHOPE Trials.com – a new portal aimed at making research studies of the jellyfish protein apoaequorin accessible for individuals with debilitating conditions. HOPE Trials is the research arm of Quincy Bioscience.

The mission of HOPE Trials is to improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from an array of debilitating conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease linked by a common cause ‚Äì a mismanagement of calcium at the cellular level. By bringing research studies into the homes of individuals living with neurodegenerative diseases, researchers are able to achieve larger numbers of participants and improve the quality of data gathered.

Quincy Bioscience research to date has shown the effectiveness of the jellyfish protein apoaequorin to improve cognitive function and other quality of life measures in generally healthy individuals. With the development of theHOPE Trials website and the implementation of clinically-validated rating scales, researchers at Quincy Bioscience will be able to gain better understanding on how this jellyfish protein may help improve the lives of those with neurological conditions.

Mark Underwood, co-founder and president, stresses the importance of both high quality and real world research, “HOPE Trials represents an innovation in research by delivering survey tools directly to participants. Two of the main reasons people choose not to take part in conventional clinical studies are the amount time and travel required. HOPE Trials greatly reduces these demands while gathering important data using the gold standard in research, randomized controlled trials.” explains Underwood.

Maximizing the use of the Internet and social media to help recruitment, HOPE Trials will access a larger demographic of people, and strengthen research. HOPE Trials has begun recruiting for the MS HOPE Trial. Interested parties can visitHOPE Trials.com to find out if they qualify to participate and learn more about future studies.
