2nd Day in St. Petersburg, Russia

Our first day was spent discovering the main attractions, as we were amazed at the beauty from a city that has only recently come out from an oppressive government. The places were simply incredible in both size and design. The Hermitage now is one of the largest galleries of fine art in the world. Moving on, we met our wonderful guide Miyrna every day and she whisked us on a three day tour of the palaces, cathedrals and sites of the city. The most amazing of our days was the Peterhof Palace with its waterfalls and water shows which is an engineering marvel of its time (17th century)
St. Petersburg, Russia

As said, we were very disheartened to see the ruin that was left by the invaders of WWII and the total disregard for the precious masterpieces and property of the Russian people. Catherine's summer palace was immense and the overall feeling that you get from this visit is that this is a very rich country. Until you move beyond the main roads and the tourist areas. As we went to our last stop for the day, I asked our driver, Vladimir, to take us down a typical street off of the highway. We randomly chose a street and found old barn style houses, unkempt yards and a much different view of the area. While the country is a place of wealth and beauty, it still seems to be made up clearly of the haves and the have-nots. All in all, the impressiveness of the place is such that it deserves a visit by any curious traveler.
St. Petersburg, Russia

St. Petersburg, Russia - Formerly known as Lenningrad is only a few hundred kilometers from Moscow, but for all purposes, it could be a different country. The people are uch more eager to help with any questions and there are even the occasional smiles that you will see. Somehow, this city seems to have a better mood than its sister city. Both have had to endure a great deal of punishment from warlords over history, but St. Petersburg has done so with a great outlook and much forgiveness. Getting around was much easier than in Moscow as there was some sense put into the street planning. Walking down the main road (Nevsky Prospect) is all you really need for entertainment in any night. The restaurants, stores and other activities are plentiful. Within a few short blocks, we were able to see the heart of the city as there are amazing Cathedrals (St Isaaccs, Church of the Spilt blood) as well as fold shows, and museums.
Moscow, Russia

What is it that seems odd here? It is like everyone is scared of something. Something that invisible... It took us a while to realize that even thought it is beautiful here and there is significant signs of westernization, that only a few short years ago this was a communist country. It was truly behind a curtain. Now, the remnants of the KGB and their harsh ways still hide within each of the citizens of this country. Concerned to talk with anyone, they are closes, unemotional. Who can blame them. Read some of the history and the struggle they went through over the past 25 years and it will surely is easy to understand their fears. Even so. nothing can take away the beauty of their architecture and their will to survive.
Moscow, Russia

Moscow is beautiful. It is a city that was reborn only 15 years ago following the fall of communism. The brightly colored buildings are just gorgeous and it is amazing how many upscale stores, restaurants and hotels there are. Red Square is, by far, one the most important world stops for any traveler. In the area, aside from the cathedrals and the Kremlin, there is gum, the famous and rather huge mall that covers several city blocks. The underground shopping mall is also a site along with the state's diamond collection and the well maintained metro system. Ride the circle line to see a different and ornately designed station at every stop. We meandered through the very hard to navigate street with and without our guide and found a few tasty treats for lunch and dinner. One word of caution WATCH OUT, it is expensive here. With the dollar being so low in value combined with the fact that Moscow is now the most expensive cities in the world, don't be surprised to see coffee for $12 a cup and simple souvenirs for $15-20. These are the same chatchkies you will find for $3 anywhere else. Also, if you plan on getting around Moscow by taxi... don't. Most taxi driver are more content to sit in their car either sleeping or reading the daily paper than they are having a fare. Several taxis that our guide asked for a ride, flatly declined. All in all, aside from the huge language barrier and the fact that I get the sneaky feeling that most Moscowians do not like westerners (or just me) this is a cool place!
