Rocky is home! I have the fan on him to keep the flies off of his parts. Right now, he is standing very far back from all humans. Poor guy.

Rocky was in surgery for several hours.  The surgeon removed  7″ of his penis (not simply the tissue involved) because he wanted to make sure all of the non-pigmented (pink) skin was eliminated.  Pink skin is more conducive to this type of cancer.

DR made sure to create a clear and open path for his urine.   I was warned that there would be blood in his urine for at least a week.  (And dried blood on his legs because he won’t allow me to touch anything back there…).

They also removed Rocky’s left eye.  This was a surprise to me because I was told that there was no eyeball in that sunken socket.  But, there was.  The eyeball had shrunk to about 10% of the original size, but it was in there… and “very scarred” he said.  The surgeon felt that Rocky must have gone through a barbed wire fence and cut his eyeball and also damaged his right eye (but clearly not as traumatic as the left eye).

After the eye removal, they sewed up the socket.  It looks very, very swollen and painful.  However, the DR said that Rocky will feel much better in a few weeks.  In his view, the penis cancer and the remnant of the left eye were constant dull aches for this little guy.  So he should be a “new pony” in a few weeks.

Rocky has 6 days to recover in the hospital and then another 2+ weeks to recover at home in a large stall.

This picture below is Rocky in his hospital stall.  He is so mad.  So, so angry.  I visited him and he would not acknowledge me.  This was his way of letting me know his feelings.  Of course, as I was leaving, he ran up to me… but for the rest of the time, he made it known that he was not happy.  Luckily, they have him on pain killers and antibiotics… but I am sure the techs poking and prodding to make sure everything is OK – hurts.

Here he is… after surgery in his hospital stall.   All went well but he is not very happy. Poor Guy.

To refresh memories, I adopted Rocky from All Seated in a Barn.  They found him in a meat auction in Texas.

When he arrived here, he was missing his left eye and was fairly blind in his other eye.  We didn’t know that he had penis cancer, actually, we don’t know when the cancer started….

This is Rocky when he arrived. His left eye is missing. His right eye has had a traumatic injury as well to his pupil. Rocky is basically blind although I think he sees shadows.

ROCKY’S BAD WEEK.

Rocky was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (skin cancer) of the penis.  The vet who diagnosed him sent pics of the issue to the specialist surgeon at Loomis Basin Equine hospital while we were in his stall… and the specialist said that he needed to remove all the non-pigmented skin – approximately 7″ – (partial phallectomy), or else the cancer could come back.   Ugh.  Poor Rocky!   THEN…while the vet had Rocky sedated, she checked his missing eye and realized that the eye was still in there, but shrunken.  It needed to be removed and the eyelids sutured shut.

Poor Rocky.  This was going to be very painful.  And it needed to happen fast because we didn’t know how long he had the penis cancer…  it could have grown really quickly.  He needed it gone.  I was anxious about it all but the specialist assured me that not only are these partial phallectomies highly successful, so are eye removals –  Rocky should recover well.  He said that this pony would be “a different guy” after he recovered because these two illnesses were probably quite painful.

So I made the double surgery appointment.

This cauliflower looking cancerous tumor has a tiny necrotic spot (the black area) which is what I was smelling… It took a vet to IV sedate him in order to inspect his sheath and notice this… It is skin cancer that is somewhat common on non-pigmented (pink) skin. The surgeon needs to remove the penis up to the dark skin (arrow). Poor guy.

ROCKY’S STORY

I have no history on Rocky other than he was found by ASIAB in a Texas kill pen (meat market).   He needed a soft landing and I wanted to give this one-eyed, rather strong-minded Shetland, a home.

Rocky has 3 brands on his tiny body… so I am pretty sure he was passed around a few times, which may have led to his traumatic head injury which ruined one eye and injured the other – his “good” eye has an oblong pupil, like a cat.  He can’t see clearly – only shadows.  I sure wish I knew what happened to him.

We have no idea when the skin cancer started.  I had noticed a smell around him after he urinated… and more flies than normal around there… so I called the vet.  I thought his sheath needed to be cleaned and I knew I couldn’t do it myself.

I gave Rocky some sedative gel and he was actually good for his sheath cleaning.  But… the vet took a big breath and she said, “it’s cancer”.  Immediately she took a pic and sent it off to the specialist.

Rocky is at the equine hospital.  I’m hoping and praying for a great outcome for this little guy who has obviously had a hard start.  But, this could make his life a whole lot better from now on.
