In celebration of Armistice Day, Horse I Ching is on sale for $0.99 from Friday 11/11/11 to 11/18/11.

At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month, World War I came to an end. It was the ‘War to end all wars’, and saw the rise of mechanized warfare. It was also the last war where the main motive power was horses.

Two of the Horse I Ching horses help tell the tale of War Horse.

This Christmas, Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the Michael Morpurgo book, War Horse, will be in theaters nationwide. War Horse tells the tale of heroic people and horses who suffered through World War I.

We are honored that the artist Ali Bannister chose to sketch two of our horses, Beau and Reba. These sketches are now on display in London as part of the National Army Museum’s War Horse: Fact & Fiction, exhibition.

One of the sketches is included in the War Horse movie as the artwork of the character Captain James Nichols, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston. We are thrilled that a sketch of our horse Beau appears in the film to help tell this tale.

We are excited to announce that Alise Lameroux, author of “The Horse I Ching” will be sharing more of her writing here on this blog. The next several posts will the threads of a recent “braided essay” that she wrote. Enjoy!

The Horse Messenger

She opens her eyes,
as the god-like force,
pulls the massive rippling curtains apart,
lively notes of music dance through her ears,
adventure, dreams, drama.

Saturday morning was special. If a kid had 2 Williams Bread wrappers in hand, free admission to McDonald Theater could be acquired. Inside love awaited. He was probably her first love.

Weekly, they would spend an hour and a half together in undisturbed fixation. His skin was light in color, with long flowing whitish blond hair; his body muscularly commanding attention; every step he took powerful yet graceful; his behavior perfect. Larger than life, he was dependable, always ready for action and adventure, always the winner. His name was “Trigger” and every Saturday morning he could be seen on the big screen chasing bad guys and conquering the world with his partner, Roy Rogers. The connection was mesmerizing, the lifestyle captivating.

It’s hard to believe his fate was to be stuffed and preserved forever by a taxidermist. Statically confined to one stationary stance forever. A game show hosts on television asks guest to guess Trigger’s current stuffed value in order to win a prize. Whatever the answer, it is not enough. How can a value be placed on inspiration or the dawning of passion? The answer should be a MasterCard ad, priceless.

Lilac beams of sunshine break the horizon whispering morning’s arrival; celebrities appear with small, well-dressed dogs in Weatherbeeta coats; daily racing forms shuffle among cups of coffee, bacon, and eggs; Frank Sinatra sings of New York providing ambience for men at work; a man vacuums bleachers while another drinks coffee and talks on his cell phone; the smell of money and expectation permeates the air; in the distance, thunder rhythmically approaches, attention shifts, heads move to the left then to the right in coordinated swivels; power beyond our capacity to understand arrives saddled with promise, then streaks by, and disappears around the bend; hopes rise with dreams of fortune; cell phones hum, empty coffee cups in need of refilling wait at the counter for seconds.
