With their tattoos, leather jackets, slicked-back hair and their beloved British motorbikes – BSAs, Triumphs, Nortons, and Royal Enfields – Rockers are the antithesis and the nemesis of the fastidiously groomed Mods. Elvis, James Dean and Marlon Brando made rocker style synonymous with rebellion sparking a global cult.
Friedrichs follows the British rocker tribe as its members congregate in parking lots, pubs, cafes, dance and pool halls, as well as huge gatherings at Jacks Hill and the Ace Café. Alternating between rich, vibrant colour and gritty black and white, these photographs capture a spirit of unapologetic defiance in clothing as well as attitude every bit as strong today as it was sixty years ago.

Trenchant and revealing commentary from Friedrichs’ subjects sheds light on the impulses, yearnings, and motivations of this enduring international rebel chic subculture.

2010 Travel photography workshops

Mali – International Africa festival, Würzburg

Photo Exhibition by Horst A. Friedrichs at the The International Africa Festival 2009 in Würzburg from April 16th to 13th June, 2009.

The photographer Horst A. Friedrichs traveled along the Niger river, the vital line of Mali. The result of this journey are the most impressive photos of light landscapes, that reveal a world where the past meets the present, and dreams meet reality.

His exhibition can be seen at the “Burse/Studentenwerk” in Würzburg from April 16th to 13th June, 2009. It will be opened by the Ambassador of the Republic of Mali. Read more about the exhibition on the The Africa festival website

Mali – A Journey Through a Magical Country

Toumani Diabaté, the master of the 21-string Kora-harp, invited photographer Horst A. Friedrichs and author Peter Pannke to learn the innermost truths about Mali.

As they traveled along the Niger river and through the desert towards Timbuktu, a fascinating panorama unfolded before them. They explored varied and impressive landscapes like the rocky, inaccessible Dogon land, the mud mosque in Djenne and the tropical forests of the south. Encountering a spectrum of local personalities like Toumani Diabaté, Malik Sidibé, dancers, fortune tellers and dream interpreters.
