2010 Travel photography workshops

Mali – International Africa festival, Würzburg

Photo Exhibition by Horst A. Friedrichs at the The International Africa Festival 2009 in Würzburg from April 16th to 13th June, 2009.

The photographer Horst A. Friedrichs traveled along the Niger river, the vital line of Mali. The result of this journey are the most impressive photos of light landscapes, that reveal a world where the past meets the present, and dreams meet reality.

His exhibition can be seen at the “Burse/Studentenwerk” in Würzburg from April 16th to 13th June, 2009. It will be opened by the Ambassador of the Republic of Mali.

Toumani Diabaté, the master of the 21-string Kora-harp, invited photographer Horst A. Friedrichs and author Peter Pannke to learn the innermost truths about Mali.

As they traveled along the Niger river and through the desert towards Timbuktu, a fascinating panorama unfolded before them. I won a Lead award!

I won a Gold Award in the documentary photography category of this year’s Lead Awards (the German magazine Oscars). The prize was given for an article in Geo magazine, No. 3; “One Hundred Years of Solitude”. The article uses images from my book Doña Maria and Her Dreams.

Troubadours of Allah – Sufi Music in the Indus Valley

Encounter the Troubadours of Allah in this stunning photographic book that explores the traditions of Sufi musicians on their quest for truth and spiritual union with the divine.

Originating in the 13th Century, the term Sufi is an honorary title in the Islamic world and is awarded to individuals who endeavor to achieve further spiritual development for themselves and others in promoting a message of brotherhood and unity for humankind.
Taken by the acclaimed German photojournalist Horst A. Friedrichs over a period of two years, the spectacular collection of images were shot in the Indus Valley, Sindh, – the southern most province of Pakistan – where there are many holy shrines to Sufi saints.

Horst Friedrichs’ photographic portrayal of Sufi musicians in India goes beneath the surface that most geographically based photography books only skim, to capture the essence of music within the culture and faces of its devotees.
