Our 2013 Annual Conference is March 6/7 at the Albatross Hotel in Gander. CLICK HERE for more information including the agenda and online registration.

Noon start on Wednesday March 6 and wrap up by 4:30pm the following day Thursday March 7. Workshops will include "Food Safety: CanadaGAP" as well as "Social Media Strategies and Practices".

Gander Markets In The Works

The following reported on VOCM today: "Ottawa has come up with more than a $100,000 for the establishment of three new markets in Gander. The open air facilities will provide fresh farm produce, baked goods and locally made arts and crafts and will be located in the Elizabeth Drive Shopping Centre.

The federal minister of intergovernmental affairs, Peter Penashue, announced the funds, saying such open air markets bring communities together and often become part of the social, cultural and economic fabric of a region, in addition to creating business opportunities and jobs."

Open Farm Day Is Back

Open Farm Day will be returning to our province on September 18th, 2011.

Open Farm Day is an Atlantic province-wide initiative designed to raise awareness of the agriculture industry in this region. The event provides the general public with an opportunity to visit local farms to discover where their food comes from, meet the people who produce it, and enjoy a family fun-filled day on the farm, whether it be taking a tour on a hay wagon, eating local sweet corn, riding a horse or harvesting fresh vegetables. In addition, Open Farm Day provides farmers with an opportunity to meet consumers and educate them on producing fresh, quality food as well as increase sales and the potential of gaining long-term customers.

Registration is now open to become a Host Farm at this year’s Open Farm Day. Deadline is July 15th, 2011 to register in order to be listed and highlighted in a map that will be distributed amongst all Sobeys stores in the province and at agricultural festivals and events leading up to the event.

Our 2011 Conference "Researching Our Crops - Developing Our Industry" came to a successful conclusion Thursday with more than 100 attendees enjoying 2 days of informative presentations and networking.

Producers also took the opportunity to gather for their AGM which saw the election of incumbent board members to a further 2-year term. Congratulations to President Melvin Rideout, Vice-President Elaine Wells, and Directors at Large Paul Lomond and Mary Lester.

Plans are already underway for our 2012 conference again at the Albatross in Gander so pencil in the tentative dates of March 7th & 8th 2012.
