our friend leo: week forty-eight

so i asked our friend leo chen one day, if his name is short for anything or is it just leo? he said….just leo. it got me thinking where that name came from. then we just started making up origins of the name. and started calling him permutations of leo.

at this point, we have enough for 52 weeks…a whole year! but some of them are not as good as others…so the door is still open. if you see one that is lame and you had a better one…then shame on you slacker! get it in before we unleash not as good ones!

we’ve been traveling so i thought i would share a few places that we like to eat at not in nyc. again, not necessarily the best or whatever superlative…just places we go to regularly when we are in your town.

the really nice thing about the u2 tour this time around is that you do not have to line up all day for a good spot. you may not have had to do that in previous tours either but front row was more paramount. for the 360 tour, sight lines were actually better further in the pit so this allowed us to sleep in, get some brunch with good friends, go to church and then casually get into the pit that night.

for brunch, we went to treat…an american brunch place with indian influences and flair. with an outdoor dining room to add to the magic of the weekend.

now….i forget what everything is but it was super tasty and i would come back again! but let’s try it…..green eggs and ham(yes! they have this here), a side of chicken sausages, savory pancakes with leeks, one of the indian egg specialties, mark’s make your own omelet, a pancake, masala french toast….anything else, i’ll need the help of my dining mates to identify!

of course, i remember what i got….the steak benedict for 10.95! take that, ny prices!

we would never have found this place without our chicago cbc’rs! look forward to seeing them during the holidays soon.

at the stadium: u2360 boston

i got to go to boston 2 on my sabbath which turned out to be a pretty good show! boston 2 is distinctive because it was the only show so far that opened with magnificent and not breathe….in fact, breathe disappears from the set entirely. your blue room showed up again to a stunned crowd. only me and 4 other diehards enjoy it. i did get to hear stay! which is partly what i was hoping for. the show has more hits and familiar tunes tonite which i am happy about because…..

its a show that i got to go with my brother in law, trent, my sister anita and efc folks now residing in the boston burbs. my family is not as fanatical as i am so less your blue room-y and more mysterious ways-y worked for them. the shows are never just about the shows and reuniting with family and dear friends makes the show for me.

the crowd responds well to the band and we all have a great, great time. it is also snow patrol’s last opening gig for the band so there is a celebratory, wistful tone to the evening.

our seats are slightly off to the side, swinging toward the back of the show so for the first time, i get to see the full stage and light show. pretty impressive. though i am further away than i was in chicago….the setlist, the 360 screen and stage still make for an intimate experience. and you can’t beat the price….these were $50 seats which surprised me since comparable tickets at other venues ran for $100 plus. though for the same price, ga’s could have been bought but trent likes his personal space and doesn’t like to stand the whole time.

now the downside…..the drive to the stadium and the exodus from the parking lot was frightful. where were the attendants who collected our $45 for parking? you heard right…$45 for parking! then they split leaving the masses to navigate for hours out of the lot. it made me think twice about coming back to gillette again….but i won’t have to make that choice as boston does not get a third show….because boston did not show up! tons of seats were available and conveyed to the band-we don’t need another 360 show. you only have yourselves to blame, boston.

meanwhile, sold out chicago and new york will get another 360 appearance in 2010(maybe even two more).

Yanks manager Girardi discusses Eastchester traffic-crash stop on WFAN

Yankees Manager Joe Girardi had just won the World Series, but said today “the most important thing we can do in life” is help others, referring to his post-game traffic stop when he helped a woman who had crashed on the Cross County Parkway in Eastchester.

“I think the most important thing is that, obviously, there’s a lot of joy in what we do, but we can’t forget to be human beings when we help others out,”?he told Mike Francesa this afternoon on WFAN radio.

Girardi was driving home to Purchase with his wife when he saw that another driver, 27-year-old Marie Henry of Stratford, Conn., had lost control of her car and crashed into a wall.

“Fortunately, I was in the right lane,” he explained. “In the left lane, it was coming around the bend, a lady had run into a concrete barrier. Her SUV looked horrible, so I pulled off to the right.”

Girardi said his wife called police as he ran across the roadway.

“As bad as the car looked, I?was really concerned,”?he said. “When I got there, she was on the phone, talking to police, and she only had a little cut. She couldn’t open her door. And I was like, ‘You need to get out of this car because if someone comes around the bend, they’re going to hit the back of your car.’ And I just kept talking to her.”

Police arrived about three minutes later, he said, “and, fortunately, she was OK.”

Francesa mentioned how strange this all must have been for the woman, who had just been aided by the manager who was coming home from achieving one of the biggest feats in sports.

“When she found out you had just won the World Series, I’m sure she was quite surprised, huh?” Francesa asked, laughing.

It turns out she had no idea who he was.

“She didn’t find out from me,” Girardi said. “Once the police got there, I?ran across the street, got back in my car and took my family home.”

The cops were impressed.

“The guy wins the World Series, what does he do? He stops to help,” said Westchester County Police Officer Kathleen Cristiano, who was among the first to arrive at the accident scene. “It was totally surreal.”

The driver was stunned by the accident, but otherwise uninjured, police said.

The crash happened at 2:25 a.m. today in the eastbound lanes along a long blind curve where the Cross County meets the Hutchinson River Parkway near the New Rochelle Road exit, police said.

Police were conducting a nearby sobriety checkpoint on the parkway. In fact, about 15 minutes earlier, Girardi had passed through the checkpoint.

Cristiano, who was working the checkpoint, congratulated him on his first win as a manager and waved him through. He hadn’t been the only Yankee to pass by the checkpoint. Pitcher Andy Pettitte, who lives in Harrison, also passed through earlier.

“He came through with a smile,” Cristiano said.

Cristiano, a self-described huge Yankees fan, said she hadn’t expected to see either one of them again. But, then, a 911 call came through about a car accident a short distance away, and he cops suspended the checkpoint to respond to the crash. As she came upon the accident scene, in an area where the parkway’s two lanes turn into three and cars speed by the curve that takes them to the Hutch, Cristiano spotted Girardi.

“He was jumping up and down, trying to flag me down,” she said. “You don’t expect him standing by a car accident, trying to help.”

Cristiano said that, by the time she arrived, Henry was able to get out of the crashed vehicle and declined to be taken to the hospital.

Girardi, dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, then told them he “had to get going.”

Cristiano and Henry both thanked him and watched as he ran across traffic again to reach his car.

“The driver didn’t know it was him until after I told her,” Cristiano said.

The area is notorious for its blind spots, and Girardi, who had parked on the right side of the parkway, and then run across traffic to get to the injured motorist, put his life at risk, police said.

“He could have gotten killed,” county Sgt. Thomas McGurn said, adding that responding police units take extra precaution in that area because of the blind curve and speeding cars. “Traffic goes by at 80 mph.”

we went early to wait on line at the semi-world famous hot doug’s that features hot dogs….

what???? you say….wait in line? do you ever do anything that does not involve lining up? you ask. and for hot dogs???

the wait aint that bad when you are with good friends. we got there pretty early to avoid the hour(s) long usual wait but moved to the back of the line to avoid the dirty looks that came with our large group of cohorts coming in late. we gave up being #3 in line but the spot we got wasn’t too bad as the line had not grown too much anyway from when we got there. it was worth it to avoid some race wars between the asians and the others.

and we are not talking hot dogs….we are talking hot dogs. look at this menu…..this is for pros.

and this one! this is nuts! crazy and amazing!

here are more menu items…..

let me see if i can get this right….theresa and i tried the ribeye hotdog(amazing!!!! my favorite), the spicy beef hot link with coca cola bbq sauce(another superb dog), a classic chicago dog, the dave kingman(chicken hot dog)- both of these were for fun but still very, very good, saucisson alsacienne(luxurious)and one more i cannot identify. and of course the duck fat fries.

the theresa conclusion….we are coming back next time we are in chicago.

tis the season…..for concert dvd releases

thanksgiving is on the horizon and bands tend to release packages for holiday gifting.

i’m excited about the killers’ first concert on dvd. here’s a preview…

looks like an amazing audience and concert!

the holiday goodies don’t end here….the killers also do a yearly christmas tune for project red and their fans.

looking forward to the late magical fall and early winter! fake christmas is on its way.

at the stadium: best game ever(for me)

i did not get world series tickets but i did get one game in the bronx for the alcs…game 2! my final game of the year.

not a bad run in 2009….a preseason game with the cubs, opening day, the first win at the stadium, a red sox game, some wins, a lot of rainy losses and a brawl. grateful theresa encouraged me to get these seats.

for the playoffs, i got bleachers in the same general area for $11 each! there are cheap seats at stadium!

the game was in doubt the whole day and night…even throughout the game. it was brutally cold with the threat of torrential rains. kenny and i dressed in multiple layers with rain and cold gear. i had on long underwear, sweaters, my winter jacket, a neck warmer, gloves and hats. note…hat plural.

they were gouging at the stadium with $10 hot chocolate in the stands. and they were selling out. however when we went to the restroom, we found a stand with a more reasonable $4 chocolate. it was a handwarmer and later, a body warmer.

it was a great, tight game throughout….but looked bleak late when the angels took the lead. but it was arod’s night as he blasted a tying run to send the game into extra innings. it got colder and rainier. back and forth threats….great playoff baseball.

finally jerry hairston and angel errors sent the fans into delirium. including us!

we were sitting in different parts of the stadium but met up to celebrate one of the best games ever at the new stadium. certainly my best game.

looking forward to some more great baseball!
