This DIY Succulent Bar is a fun activity for a Valentine’s Day party or baby/bridal shower!

I designed this station for a Galentine get-together, but you can switch up the colors and decorative elements to match any party theme. You can also make these yourself (instead of at a party) and hand them out as cute Valentine’s Day gifts!

Station Organization

Here’s a peek at the setup… with the succulents and planters sitting “buffet style” on a side table and all of the potting materials on a separate table. I centered the potting materials so they could be easily accessed from both sides of the table:

I set out a variety of succulents (so the finished arrangements would look a little different from each other) and just one type of planter. The planters were super cute and priced well – just $4 each at Walmart when I bought them!

I put potting soil in rectangular planters (purchased at IKEA). Decorative rocks – or aquarium pebbles – were placed in small white planters and heart-shaped bowls. Some guests used the red and white decorative rocks, while others preferred having soil on top.

The finishing touch on each arrangement was a printable flag! I designed two styles of flags and hot-glued them to bamboo skewers. They added a fun detail and really helped to play up the theme.

The Printables

I pretty much ALWAYS use printables as design details… and even when they just state the obvious (see above), they still make everything look better!

To-Go Bags

I wanted to make the arrangements easy for guests to bring home (and avoid potential tipping over or spillage in their cars) – so gift bags were provided for the ride home. They had a wide enough bottom to fit the planters, and I personalized them with Large Labels from my website:

The Finishing Touch

I designed some printable flags with the phrases “succa for love” and “grow girl grow” for a cute finishing touch! The flags are part of my full Succulent Bar Love collection, BUT if they’re the only item you need, scroll to the bottom of this post for the FREE printable.

I found the small pink planters in the garden section at Walmart. The decorative red and white pebbles are actually aquarium rocks! I soaked and washed the rocks before using them in order to remove any excess salt.

Here’s a peek at the succulent flags coming out of my home printer. I used Staples brand Matte Photo Paper and just love how vibrant the colors turned out!

Gingerbread houses are such a fun way to celebrate Christmas! My Gingerbread Spice printable collection was the inspiration for this colorful little holiday get-together.

We’ve hosted a handful of gingerbread house decorating parties across the years, and one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that pre-built gingerbread houses will make your life – and everyone else’s – WAY, way easier! (Tip #1, btw)

Tip #2 – Make Your Own Icing

I bought the pre-built gingerbread houses for this party at Target. They came with a tube of icing, but we opted to make our own homemade gingerbread house icing instead.

The homemade icing tasted a lot better AND made it possible for the girls to be as generous as they wanted with the frosting. (We made a LOT!)

I scooped the icing into pastry bags and cinched off the top with a pastry bag tie to keep the icing from leaking out. You can also use rubber bands to cinch the bags as a backup, but pastry bag ties work best in my experience!

Tip #3 – Organized Place Settings

Make sure each guest has what they need by arranging it at their place setting. We had the following:

• Gingerbread house – on a cardboard base
• Pastry bag – with homemade icing
• Disposable plate – for stray candies and icing
• Napkin – for the mess!
• Place Card – from my Gingerbread Spice theme

Tip #4 – Decorations & Labels

It’s important to make the gingerbread house decorations easy for guests to access while they work. I like to line everything down the center of a long table and bookend the far sides of the table with the same treats on both sides.

For this party, I also placed some of the more unique & limited candies in the center of the table and highlighted them with fun labels from my Gingerbread Spice printable collection.

You can also use labels to give treats playful names that match the theme! In this case, candy canes became “North Poles” and coconut flakes became “Snow”.

Tip #5 – Lots of Decorating Time

The older my girls get, the longer they seem to spend on their gingerbread creations. So take your guests’ ages into consideration and then build in a little more time for decorating than you might think you need!

I was really surprised at how intricate these houses were, with patterned rooftops and “icicles” and creative doorways!

Tip #6 – Plan Fun Breaks

As kind of an add-on to Tip #5… it’s also a good idea to build in fun breaks! The girls took breaks from decorating their houses twice at this party and enjoyed some silly photo prop time and a hot cocoa station, too.

These festive hats were all from Target as well. We’ve gotten so much use out of all of them… but the turkey with Santa mittens seems to be the favorite!

Tip #7 – Photo Keepsakes

After all this creative work, there should definitely be some long-lasting evidence. (Something that lives on long after the houses are eaten, at least!)

I took photos of each gingerbread house with the artist’s place card next to it and texted it to their moms. It’s fun to look back on these photos and remember what everyone designed!

If you’re throwing a camping-themed baby shower or birthday party, these cute & easy Mudcloth-Inspired Risers are great for elevating themed signs, party decor, and more!

The risers are embellished with simple mudcloth pattern elements on the sides + patterned paper on top.

I created a few of them to add height to this Camping Baby Shower Lantern Centerpiece (pictured below) and used extras to prop up additional signs throughout the party.

Mudcloth-Inspired Riser Stands

***

Riser Stand Materials:

• Wood Cube Container (6″ to 8″)
• Craft Paint
• Small Paint Brush
• Painter’s Tape (optional)
• Patterned Paper

Instructions:

1. Flip the wood container upside down so the flat side is on top.
2. Mark off the area you want to decorate with painter’s tape.
3. Paint a simple pattern of Xs and dots across one side. It doesn’t have to be perfect at all! Paint the Xs first in white, then use an accent color for the dots.
4. When the paint is dry, remove the tape.
5. Cut a piece of patterned paper to line the top of the container. Use a small dab of hot glue to secure it.

This is one of my three centerpiece designs for a camping-themed baby shower event I did with Operation Shower. Learn how to make it below!

BTW, you can also simplify this centerpiece by only using some of the elements. For example, just the lantern & themed sign + a few pinecones sprinkled would still be super cute! The DIY Mudcloth-Inspired Riser and extra embellishments are optional.

Camping Baby Shower Lantern Centerpiece

***

Materials:

• Red Lantern
• Printable Flames (+ Optional Back Side)
• Scissors
• 3D Adhesive Dots
• 1/4” Wood Balls
• Hot Glue Gun
• Twine
• Baker’s Twine
• Pacifier

Instructions:

1. Print the paper flames on card stock and cut them out.
2. Remove the glass portion of the lamp and set it aside.
3. Place a 3D adhesive dot (or a little dab of hot glue) down at the base and use it to attach the flame.
4. Slide the glass lantern piece over the paper flame and back into place.
5. Embellish the lantern with wood balls or beads. Use the tiniest bits of hot glue to hold them in place, and take extra care not to burn your fingers!
6. Wrap twine around the bottom of the lantern a few times, then tie it off and trim. Add a 2nd layer of baker’s twine for added detail.
7. Hang a pacifier on the lantern, and it’s done!

Embellished Frame & Sign

Materials:

• 4×6 Sign from Little Camper Collection
• Adhesive Dots
• Wooden/Chalkboard Frame
• Felt Balls & Hot Glue (optional)
• Small Metal Container* (used as riser – optional)

*The small metal container is available at Hobby Lobby as a single item inside the store or as part of a 3-piece set when ordered online. They’re 50% off quite often, so keep an eye out for sales!

Instructions:

1. Use adhesive dots to attach the 4×6 sign to the center of the wood frame.
2. Embellish the top of the frame with small felt balls in matching colors (optional). I used tiny dabs of hot glue to attach them.

When my daughter asked for a camping birthday party, this candy station was one of the first things I designed!

I immediately got stuck on the idea of featuring colorful balloon letters and toy bugs in unexpected colors and ran with things from there… the result was a bright and playful indoor campout!

Colorful Camping Party Candy Buffet

Read on for full details on how to recreate this fun candy station at your own camping party. You can also find all of the camping party printables in my store!

BUG OUT! Backdrop

I spray-painted 16″ letter balloons for the candy table backdrop and hung them on mosquito net fabric. I absolutely love how bright & colorful this BUG OUT backdrop turned out!!

The balloon letters took 2-3 coats of spray paint each, and I only painted the front. If I did this design over again, I would attach little mosquitos or toy bugs all over the mosquito netting. It’s the one thing I feel like the backdrop is missing.

Colorful Bugs

We definitely needed some bugs crawling around on this buffet! I bought some large toy bugs and painted them in colors that matched the party.

My daughter and her friend loved helping with these, which was definitely an added bonus! We used acrylic craft paint and started by giving them all a base coat of white before adding the bright colors.

Creative Candy Jars & Labels

I used the acrylic candy jars to hold the treats and decorated them with twine & printable labels from my Camp Out party collection. Candy is just candy until you give it a fun name! Using printables to label the sweets made all the difference here…

Even though bugs were a big part of the decor on this candy buffet, I used all different kinds of camping-themed words to come up with fun names for the sweets.

Here’s the full list of candies & names:

• Blue Gummy Bears = WILD BEARS
• Gummy Worms = FISHING BAIT
• Red & Yellow Rock Candy = CAMPFIRE FLAMES
• Banana Gummies = BANANA SLUGS
• White Sixlets = SPOTTED OWL EGGS
• Whoppers = BIG FOOT DOO-DOO (I misspelled this one at our party )
• Pink Butter Mints = LADYBIRD BEETLES (a.k.a. LADYBUGS)
• Heart Shaped Marshmallows = LOVE BUGS
• Smarties = CATERPILLARS

These are just some initial ideas… you can serve your own favorite treats and edit the text on the labels to say anything you want!

Bug Jar Party Favors

There’s always leftover candy on candy buffets, so I added little acrylic “Bug Jars” that the guests could use to collect some treats to take home. These also doubled as a party favor, so it was a win-win!

The bug jars are sitting on a triangle-shaped wall shelf that I picked up at Marshalls for under $15. I almost always use inexpensive wall shelves to add height to candy and dessert buffets. It’s one of my favorite party styling tricks!

Decorating spooky cupcakes is always a fun way to celebrate Halloween! It works great as an activity for any Halloween party, playdate, or family night in.

For this Witch Cauldron Cupcakes activity, kids can create their idea of what a witch cauldron would be filled with while brewing (the potion ingredients) OR what crazy concoction that potion would create. For example…

Setting Up the Station

I did this cupcake station at a Hocus Pocus movie night for my kids and a few of their friends. I wanted to have another activity besides the movie… especially since they seem to have a problem sitting through an entire movie when they’re together at this age.

They definitely seemed to enjoy it – and it was fun to see their random creations!

I set the ingredients in the center of the table, with plates of cupcakes on either side. The cupcakes were devil’s food cake chocolate with green frosting (to represent the cauldron brew).

Each place setting had a paper plate, napkin, and mini bowl (for gathering multiple ingredients to bring to their place setting).

For cupcake decoration options, we had:

• Halloween Peeps (ghosts & Frankenstein monsters)
• Gummy Skulls
• Gummy Body Parts & Gummy Fangs (mixed together)
• Sprinkles Mix 1 – Gold & White
• Sprinkles Mix 2 – Purple/Green/Black
• Icing Candy Eyeballs
• Icing Candy Skulls (tiny)
• Icing Candy Halloween Mix (tiny bats, ghosts, etc.)

• Twizzlers Pull-Apart Licorice*

*The licorice wasn’t supposed to be an ingredient originally – but the girls kept grabbing it from the candy buffet to use as a decoration, so I’d recommend including it in your station!!

Styling the Station

Most of the ingredients were placed in bowls or containers, except for the smaller nonpareils and icing candies, which stayed in their original cylinders. I used a couple of acrylic candy containers, two ramekins, and a 3-part container that’s actually an acrylic kitchen drawer organizer for the rest of the items.

As usual, adding a themed sign and labels made all the difference in the styling!!

The printable candy labels are part of my full Hocus Pocus Halloween Party Theme. They’re also available as a mini Halloween Treats Set with just the labels and two signs.

I customized the names of the candy labels on my website with fun names like “Potion Bubbles” and “Toil and Trouble” for the two sprinkle mixes.

Cupcake Concoctions

Once the station is set up, you can just let the kids have fun with it!! Here’s a peek at some of their creations…

The gummy fingers seemed to work really well as “tongues” and “noses” for creepy creatures.

Gummy eyes and gummy fangs were definitely favorites as well!

Cupcakes To-Go

I found some 4-compartment cupcake containers on Amazon that were the perfect solution for transporting these home!

Each container was personalized with a name, using the same printable labels that I used for the decorating station and candy names.

Want a creative candy buffet at your next event but feeling unsure of how to make it happen?

You’re in the right place!

In this post, I’ll share the 8 steps I take to create (medium-sized) candy buffets myself, using my daughter’s Rock Star-themed birthday set-up as an example. You can use these same steps with ANY party theme and occasion you want, though!

A Note on Candy Buffet Sizes

Back in the day, when candy buffets first started getting popular, this Rock Star buffet would be considered more of a small or mini set-up! At that time it was ALLLLL about big glass apothecary jars and “the grander, the better” layouts.

Of course, this also translated to pretty dang expensive, with styled candy buffets EASILY running $1000 or more. The cost of all that bulk candy really adds up!

These days I’m usually creating candy buffets for kids’ birthdays or holiday parties – and things have definitely changed! I typically focus on a smaller, simple set-up with shatterproof containers and LOTS of creativity.

8 Steps for a Creative Candy Buffet

STEP #1.

Decide on the treats you want to include + give them fun, themed names whenever possible.

You’ll need 8 to 12 types of treats for a medium-sized candy buffet.

For the Rock Star theme, I used these candies & names:

• Pop Rocks = ROCK FEST
• Twizzlers Pull’n’Peel = TWISTED SISTERS
• Banana Gummies = WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE
• Airheads = GROUPIES or HEADBANGERS
• Tattoo Fruit Rollups = TONGUE TATTOOS
• Rolos = ROCK AND ROLOS
• Gummi Bears = SWEET CHILD O’ MINE
• Abba-Zabba = AB/ZB (a play on AC/DC)
• Whoppers = ROLLING STONES
• Jelly Bellies = JELLY BELLY BEATS (served in mason jar “drums”)
• Slime Lickers = TONGUE PAINTERS
• Rock Candy Sticks = *MOHAWKS* (displayed in styrofoam mannequin heads)

STEP #2.

Set out the (empty) containers for everything and figure out a good arrangement for your table. Use risers – like floating wall shelves and dessert stands – to add height to the layout.

STEP #3.

Decide which candy/treats to put in what containers, taking the colors and sizes of the treats into account. (See above how the treats that are all-yellow or multi-color treats are spread out evenly instead of bunched together.)

STEP #4.

Typeset the candy labels (using the Design Hero Customizer on my website).

STEP #5.

Print and cut out the candy labels, as well as the dessert table sign and any other printables you plan to use.

STEP #6.

Embellish the candy containers with decorative trims and labels, using hot glue or glue dots to secure them. (I bought these rock-star-themed trims at JoAnn.)

STEP #7.

Add the sign(s) and accent decor to your table.

In this case, that meant I needed to create the rocker mannequin heads/stands + turn the mason jars into little “drums” to hold the jelly beans.

I’ll share a detailed DIY of the rock star mannequin heads and stands later. For now, here’s a little behind-the-scenes. :)

I bought the styrofoam mannequin heads at Michaels and the rock band sticker pack on Amazon.

STEP #8.

Now for the final details! Add mini scoops/tongs (if needed for unwrapped treats) and set out little favor bags or treat containers for your guests to use.

There can be other details to consider, of course – one of them being a backdrop. Backdrops aren’t always needed, though… it really depends on where your buffet is set up.

I used a simple silver foil curtain as a backdrop here, and WISH that I would’ve added some oversized black letter balloons to spell out YUM or ROCK at the top of it, but didn’t think of that detail in time to make it happen. It happens.

I’m still happy with how it turned out… and my daughter absolutely LOVED it, which is the most important thing! She’s really into music, and it really felt like “her”.

Let’s Disco, BABY!!!

This Disco-Themed Baby Shower took place on the annual girls’ trip with my college friends. Since we all live in different places, it was the only baby shower for Alieh that all of us could make it to. It was also a SURPRISE!

Alieh has always loved disco style, sequins, and all things sparkly. That’s why we chose this theme for her baby shower, and I had so much fun designing it!

DIY Disco Ball Baby Rattles

These cute little “baby rattles” were one of my favorite design elements!

To make them, I used a small disco ball ornament, a wooden craft dowel (painted gold), and silver styrofoam vase filler balls. The dowel was inserted in both styrofoam pieces and hot glued to secure.

Tip: Craft wire cutters make it easy to cut the dowel into small pieces.

Poppin’ Bottles Drink Station

I love the play on words with “Poppin’ Bottles” – because it works for champagne OR baby bottles!  It’s perfect for a bubbly bar, but you can really use it with any drinks you’d like to serve.

Disco Mama & Disco Babe Cups

This was a smaller baby shower, so I was able to make personalized disco-themed tumblers for everyone. (I used my Cricut, black vinyl, and these cups.) Alieh’s tumbler read “DISCO MAMA” while everyone else’s read “DISCO BABE”.

I also made disco drink stirrers out of gold party straws + tiny disco balls! More of the tiny disco balls and vase filler balls were used as table scatter.

Disco Ball Balloons

Mylar disco ball balloons were a no-brainer for the decor! They were inexpensive and made a big impact on the space. We hung them on the photo backdrop, from the ceiling, and even scattered extras around the floor.

We also had a real disco ball that shined on the gift/cake table. I designed some signs to match (both part of the printable collection) and displayed a disco-themed onesie next to the cake.

Disco Baby Shower Cake Topper

We ordered a plain white cake from a local bakery and added the party on top!

The gold acrylic “oh baby” topper was from Etsy. I hot glued it to a craft dowel rod to add more height, then inserted it the rod into the cake and piled assorted sizes of disco balls around it.

A few of the smaller disco balls were also hot glued to the dowel rod to help keep everything in place.

Disco Baby Photo Backdrop

The photo backdrop was made from light champagne gold fringe curtains + silver DISCO BABY letter balloons. It made for such fun pics!

The themed attire helped with the fun pics too!!

Using our group text thread for this trip, a couple of people suggested we dress in “sparkly, disco-style metallics” the first night under the guise of it being just for fun. This is how we made sure that Alieh would have a themed outfit for her own baby shower.

Donut Bars are such a fun activity idea for everything from birthday parties & holidays to a baby or bridal shower brunch. Remember – adults love donuts too!

You’ll Need:

• Donuts (glazed or unfrosted)
• Frosting/Glaze
• Assorted Toppings
• Donut Holders* or Trays

The Frosting/Glaze

While you can use buttercream frosting for donuts, a donut glaze is really ideal. It’s not hard to make, either! I used a recipe with just 3 ingredients: butter, light corn syrup, and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Chips.

This was my first time making chocolate donut glaze, and I was surprised at how well it turned out! Guests were able to easily dunk their donuts and get a nice, smooth coating. The vanilla glaze was easy as well!

Donut Bar Toppings

For the toppings, I wanted a mix of chocolatey options + colorful ones that matched the decor. Sprinkles and cereal were an easy solution for bringing in the color!

There’s no set number of toppings that you have to have… it’s all up to personal preference.

I ended up setting out 7 options and designed some cute labels for them. The toppings included:

1. “Sunshine” Sprinkles (yellow & white)
2. Hershey’s Cinnamon Chips
3. Rainbow Sprinkles
4. Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Chips
5. Krispy Cocoa Cereal (generic brand)
6. “Colorful” Cereal O’s (generic brand)
7. Heath Bar Toffee Bits

The rainbow sprinkles mix was my fav!! The colors were so vibrant and it made for the prettiest donuts!

Table Layout

I chose to set the toppings up in the center of the station and bookend it with donuts so that it would have a symmetrical look AND so that guests could start from either side.

Inexpensive wire crates (that I found at Marshalls) were used to add height & functionality. I flipped one of them upside down and used it as a stand for the donut bar sign (+ stuck some colorful balloons under it, too!). The other crate held the plates and napkins.

I mentioned above that you can use glazed OR unfrosted donuts for your donut bar. My personal vote is to go with glazed, though… it’s just another layer of tasty!

Here are a couple BTS pics of the party prep. I printed & cut out the sign at home… and had a very hard time not eating all the Heath Bar Toffee Bits while filling the topping bowls!
