Movie Review - Chillar Party

It’s a single filmi formula that has traditionally been failsafe. Herd a bunch of frisky and fancy-free youngsters together, throw them into an emotional whirligig that pushes them to raise the banner of revolt against insensitive adults and permit the ensuing tussle do the rest. It makes for good, unadulterated fun.

Right up your street? Then Chillar Party is often a must-watch for you. It squeezes inside a quiet message even as it portrays the world purely during the gawky-eyed issue of view of children. The film strikes a perfect balance among the a couple of poles of the script. Well, almost.

Written and directed by the duo of Vikas Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari and bankrolled by UTV Spotboy, Chillar Party got superstar Salman Khan so excited that he came on board as co-producer well following the film had got off the starting blocks. Excellent judgment – Chillar Party is indeed a film worth backing every which way.

It moves during the light-hearted on the thought-provoking and during the rib-tickling on the tear-jerking without losing its equilibrium.

As Chillar Party opens, we are introduced a single by a single on the feisty gang of innocents around whom the plot revolves. It is possibly as adorable a gallery of characters as any you'll ever encounter inside a Bollywood movie.

The child actors are outright naturals. Don’t be surprised if quite a few of these names crop up on film credits for years to come.

The Chillar Party boys live in Chandan Nagar colony, a residential complex which is shaken up somewhat as soon as Fatka, a spunky boy who washes cars to your living, arrives in their midst with a canine companion, Bhidu.

Fatka and his dog are outsiders in a lot more methods than a single – they belong on the wrong side of the social divide – but following the very first run-ins of the boys of Chandan Nagar, he and his pooch are accepted as an integral component of the chillar party.

But, particularly for the dog, life isn’t incredibly as effortless as it may appear to these small pranksters: a mean-minded politician decides how the locality is in require of becoming swept clean of stray mutts and Bhidu is immediately targeted. The boys swing into action and launch a ‘save Bhidu’ battle during the face of grave odds.

If Chillar Party works for the most component as an entertainer, it is primarily as it manages to hold a tight leash on its narrative flow and the antics of the children. Simplicity has its uses and should you know exactly how to milk it for the advantage, you’ve got a winner on your hands.

Is Chillar Party, then, a perfect children’s film? Saying that would be a bit of the stretch. The characters are less nuanced folks than recognisable types, etched out and christened on the basis of their defining traits.

So what we have is often a boy referred to as Second Hand who struts around in borrowed clothes and another (he answers on the name of Shaolin) that dreams of being a martial arts movie star a la Jackie Chan. A know-all – he is referred to as Encyclopaedia – has his distinct opposite during the gang’s incorrigible simpleton, Mottu alias Silencer. During the world in accordance with Chillar Party, boys will be boys!

Through the entire first half, the writer-director duo holds the proceedings at a level which is totally in sync of the unpretentious spirit of the film. During the run-up on the climax, however, the film comes precariously around tying itself up in knots as the child-like aura it builds up begins to teeter on the edge of childishness. Mercifully, it stays on its feet and doesn’t topple over. For that alone the film deserves at least three stars.

It is common for actors to borrow jewellery in exchange for the brand’s promotion. They are, however, required to carry a certificate stating the jewels are not for trading purposes and will be brought back. Like Lamba, Sharma was not carrying the certificate, the officer said.

Anushka Sharma was carrying gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 35 lakh and watches worth Rs 10 lakh. “She said some 5-6 jewellers had given their jewels to her. One of them is Nutandas Jewellers,” the officer added.

Two Sundays ago, actor Shah Rukh Khan bared his heart in a solo appearance on Koffee With Karan Season 3, a celebrity chat show on TV, anchored by producer-director-fashion designer Karan Johar. But SRK’s statements like, “If things are not great between Salman and me, I think it’s my fault,” haven’t gone down to well with his friend-turned-foe Salman Khan.

“Shah Rukh and I can’t patch up. If he was really sorry or felt that whatever happened was his fault, he could have always walked up to my house, knocked on my door and said whatever he had to say. He could have even called or messaged me in private. But it’s no point going on national television and making statements. It was too dramatic,” says Salman. “After this, I don’t ever want to patch up with him. Period.”

SRK-SalmanThe actors first had a face-off of sorts on the sets of SRK’s Chalte Chalte, after which Aishwarya Rai, Salman’s then girlfriend, was replaced with Rani Mukherji. The two subsequently made up at common friend Farah Khan’s wedding.

Their next verbal duel happened two years ago, at actor Katrina Kaif’s birthday party at a Bandra nightspot with almost the entire industry on the guest list. Ever since, the Khans haven’t spoken to or worked with each other.

In one of the chat show segments on Star World, Johar even asked Shah Rukh if he’d pick up the phone if it flashed “Salman Khan calling”, to which Khan said yes, but only if he was near the phone. Given their current relationship status, would Salman call Shah Rukh? “Even if he wants or doesn’t want to pick up the phone, I don’t think I’m ever going to call him,” retorts Salman. “After his tear-jerking drama on TV, which I guess was more for eyeballs, TRPs and sympathy than anything else. There’s no way I will ever call him.”

Salman is also expected to appear on Koffee With Karan 3, but not before reportedly asking Johar to cough up Rs 50 lakh as fee for sipping coffee on the show.

“Arrey, I asked Karan to donate a decent amount to my Being Human charity,” Salman says, with a wink. “Whatever I’ve quoted is a miniscule amount for a big guy like him. Once he does that, I’ll shoot for the show.”

Actor-producer and show host Karan Johar broke down when most effective buddy Shah Rukh Khan spoke about his former close friends Farah Khan and Salman Khan.

Karan was moved to tears when SRK mentioned that he can't often tell people that he loves them.

Further on, the source adds, "He (SRK) says, 'I consider it is understood that I love them if I have told them once... I can't preserve repeating it... I have a difficulty saying 'I love you' twice and thrice and preserve repeating the words... Even in my films I can't preserve saying 'I love you!'.'

A source told Mumbai Mirror, "Aamir has shaved his head, but not completely. It’s basically a glimpse which resembles the 1 he had in Ghajini."

The actor shaved off his hair on November 8. “The shaving happened on November 8. It was done at his residence. Obviously, nobody else was present except a brand new hairdresser and Aamir’s family," continues the source.

The actor will permit his hair to grow, and would then zero over a glimpse that he demands for Reema Kagti's suspense drama. “Now, Aamir will growing his hair all more than again. And he shall settle over a crop which he feels would greatest suit him.”

Princess of Travancore in Hisss

Actress Mallika Sherawat's forthcoming film Hisss has been making quite a buzz and the latest is that Lakshmi Bai, the erstwhile princess of Travancore, will make an appearance in the movie.

"Akka" as she is affectionately called by close friends and family, met Hisss diector Jennifer Lynch through family friend Govind Menon, who is producing the film.

When Lynch was casting for the role of Divya Dutta's mother, she offered the role to Lakshmi Bai who initially refused. But after much convincing and cajoling, she finally agreed to be part of the film.

"Akka is a natural storyteller. Her intelligence and grace are matched only by her incredible instinct about people and their character. It was an honour to be her director," Lynch said in a statement.

"Akka will provide a healthy amount of comic relief in the film, and her character's storyline is crucial to the plot."

The opportunity came with 'Robot'. This is not an easy film to make and is technically way ahead." The actress plays a young student Sanaa in the film and described her character as a livewire.

"So far, I have done character driven roles and not been part of conventional commercial genre for a long time. Sanaa
is not a difficult character. It is what leading ladies in an entertainer do. In my case, such roles have been rare," said the actress.

"But, Shankar has given her grain, roots. She is a student who is doing further studies in medicine. There is degree of logic why she is in the film. Shankar has taken entertainment to the next level," she added.

Aishwarya said since she started out in movies, she has never done roles of a conventional newcomer. "I experienced different genres of films with Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Rahul Rawail, Mansoor Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the initial years," she recalled.

When asked about her experience working in Tamil movies, Ash said she had done 'Iruvar' and 'Jeans' in Tamil before 'Ravanan' and now 'Endhiran'.

"There is a misconception that people do movies down south because they don't get work here. But, I am an open
minded actor. I sign movies for the characters that are offered to me," she said.

According to her, Shankar is a visionary whose movies are highly entertaining for the common man. "He re-defines magnificence and is willing to push creative boundaries. I respect filmmakers and the kind of movies they make and Shankar has proved himself as a director and Rajni sir is a legend," she said.

Aishwarya said she looks at the film being offered to her in totality and not just her character. "My part is
important of course. But it is the director and the entire team that make the experience of filmmaking very exciting. I
feel that there is pleasure in working as a team," she added.

Having worked in four Tamil movies, the former Miss World said she was far more comfortable in Tamil language now.

Dhobi Community File a Case against Dhobi Ghat

Aamir Khan and his wife, Kiran Rao, were in a very joyous mood when they went to participate in the Toronto International Film Festival a few days back, and they returned with much applause too for Rao’s directorial debut Dhobi Ghat. The film had its international premiere at this festival.

However, Rao needs to fight a legal case now for the title of her movie Dhobi Ghat. Vinod Kumar Kanojia, the chairman of Hindustan Kanojia Organisation of Dhobis, has claimed that the title of the movie was a sign for making caste division in the dhobi community. He has appealed to the Delhi High Court asking for a change of the title before film releases in theaters.

Kanojia also requested the censor board to assess the film’s title in order to avoid caste division in society. In his petition, Kanojia stated that the movie could have opted for some other title but they have chosen the title to hurt the feelings of the dhobi community. He added that the community was notified as the scheduled caste in the Indian Constitution and it is a punishable offence to call any person by its community name. He further mentioned that the fundamental right of the community is violated by the film’s title and the court must restrain it.

Dhobi Ghat has received high accolades in the recently held Toronto International Film festival and all parties involved would like a resolution to this matter at the earliest. The case is likely to be heard in court on Wednesday. Kanojia alleged that the director and producer of the movie have used the name of the caste just to earn money and it is a very minor and dirty thinking. He said that no one has the right to sell the name of any caste.
