While Apple seemingly can do no wrong, rolling out iPads and iPhones, Google isn’t feeling as lucky. It’s facing antitrust regulators in Europe, censors in China and copyright and privacy hawks around the globe. Even Nicolas Sarkozy has gotten into the act, nudging Google’s European base in Ireland to pay French taxes to operate in France”

“the latest incarnation of the AdBlock extension for Chrome is using this “beforeload” event to not only hide ads from the user but prevent them from downloading entirely.

This brings the Chrome AdBlock extension in line with its namesake, the popular AdBlock Plus add-on for Firefox.”

The so-called “shadow tests” replicate how keywords will perform when Yahoo’s advertisers are plugged into Microsoft’s adCenter system, which will soon power the paid search businesses of both companies. The test results will help determine whether Yahoo and Microsoft can flip the switch on their unusual partnership this fall, as they hope.

“The next couple of weeks are going to be critical,” said David Karnstedt, who runs search engine marketer Efficient Frontier”

Paul Sharma is a well-known writer for the Wall Street Journal and he has recently commented on one of its main topics of discussions: “Advertising in the New Online World”

“I caught up with Doug Knopper, CEO of U.S.-based ad inventory management company FreeWheel, to discuss how advertising will be produced and consumed in the new online video world.

The company’s services allow the management of ad sales rights, ad inventory, deciding where an ad will be shown (pre-roll, mid-roll, post-roll or overlay banners), and work out revenue sharing.

The online ad world is growing strongly, with research house eMarketer forecasting the U.S. market will grow from $1 billion this year to $7 billion in 2014. But if all screens (TV, PC and mobile etc.) are taken into account, which makes sense as we move into a converged world, the global ad spend is expected to be in the region of $200 billion by 2014.”

That was the headline of WJS newspaper for yesterday.

“Google Inc. (GOOG) is expected to report sharp gains in second-quarter profit and sales after the market’s close Thursday, as the Internet search giant is seen benefiting from a sustained pickup in online advertising.

For the period ended in June, analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expect Google to post earnings of $6.51 a share, excluding special items, and $4.99 billion in net revenue.

That compares to earnings excluding items of $5.36 a share, and $4.07 billion in net revenue during the same period last year.

Wall Street is generally banking on a continued uptick in online advertising during the quarter, which should benefit Google as the leading provider of relatively affordable online-search advertisements.”

“Newspaper companies are a dying breed, and one consistent scapegoat for their demise is the rise of blogs and online news sites.

In October 2009, Tom Curly, CEO of the Associated Press news service, said blogs were directing large amounts of revenue away from original content creators.

At the same time, Rupert Murdoch sneered at bloggers, saying they would cause the “content creators” like his company News Corp., parent of the Wall Street Journal and New York Post, “to pay the ultimate price” if they were not held in check.”

Advertisers are changing the way they used to “spy” on potential customers:

“They check Web browser cookies to see what sites you visit. They use your computer’s IP address to learn where you live. They may see your Facebook groups. They can get a large amount of data from a variety of sources.

Advertisers aren’t bad. They’re just trying to sell products. If advertisers didn’t exist, many of your favorite sites would fold. At the very least, they would need to charge for access. And by targeting you, advertising campaigns are more effective.

Still, many people are uncomfortable with ad tracking. They don’t know what information advertisers have gathered or from where. They may feel that tracking is a privacy invasion.”
