1. A five-year-old girl was among eight bodies found inside the crippled Costa Concordia cruise ship. Dayana Arlotti, from Rimini, whose father William Arlotti is also missing, is the youngest person who died in the disaster.

2. Dayana was on the Mediterranean cruise with her Italian father and his girlfriend. The girlfriend survived, while the father, Williams Arlotti, was among the missing.

3. The bodies were found by Italian fire service divers on the fourth deck of the giant ship, which was at the start of a week-long cruise of the Mediterranean when it ran aground on Giglio island, off the coast of Tuscany, on Jan 13.

4. The first four bodies were found in the morning, with another four located in the flooded hull later in the day. It was not known whether they were passengers or crew members.

5. Italy's national civil protection agency, which is monitoring the operation off a Tuscan island, said four of the bodies had been recovered - those of a woman, a girl, a man and a person whose sex could not immediately be determined. Because of worsening weather, she divers were unable to immediately remove the other four bodies.

6. The discovery of the bodies brought the confirmed death toll to 25, with at least seven people still missing.

7. Helicopters lowered the divers onto the above-water section of the Concordia. They then scrambled down the side and swam through openings into the wreckage.

Tom Daley did enough to progress to the platform synchro final at the FINA World Cup on his return to competition following his public feud with British Swimming performance director Alexei Evangulov. Daley and experienced team-mate Peter Waterfield showed signs of rustiness in their first competition since finishing sixth at last July's World Championships as they relied on an impressive last dive to win through to the 12-team final.

2. "It wasn't our best performance by any means," Daley said. "But the thought that we dived like that and finished sixth and qualified for the final is comforting. "We know that we have to step it up a lot in the final."

3. The pair had been 10th going into their final dive before attracting their best score for their back two-and-a-half somersault two-and-a-half twist. "We had to make sure we pulled it out of the bag," Daley said "It was our best scoring dive. Going into the last dive and you hear the crowd roaring like that it does give you an extra adrenaline buzz to do it well."

4. British Swimming performance director Alexei Evangulov warned Daley last week that he faced missing an Olympic medal if he did not cut down his media commitments, while the Russian also claimed the former world champion's Chinese rivals trained "three times harder".

5. Evangulov added that the British public had unrealistic expectations of Daley's gold medal prospects at the Olympics and that he was not the best diver in the world.

1. The first British seaside pier opened on the Isle of Wight in 1814, and by the end of the century, there were over 100 adorning coastal resorts around the country. 1. "Everyone in Mumbai is in a state of acceleration - there is something real here,” says well-known Indian photojournalist Pablo Bartholomew. He is holding an exhibition of black-and-white photographs of Mumbai, formerly called Bombay, taken in the 1970s and '80s. The show is being held in Delhi's PHOTOINK gallery.

2. “I am attracted to people who have a kind of outsider element to them,” says Bartholomew. The pictures in grainy black and white capture the many moods of the city and its people.

3. Bartholomew came to Mumbai in 1976 to "escape his troubled teenage past". “The city has always been an economic refugee’s haven. I too came to Bombay as a refugee to find myself both economically and in my work."

4. "Often I'd wandered aimlessly through the streets hoping to discover its many parts, bit by bit, day by day, month by month, always amazed by the infinite visual joy in each discovery of this place that came to be called home," says Bartholomew.

5. His images show, says Bartholomew, "my outside world in the streets and subcultures of opium dens, red light area, street kids and the city as it was then".

6. "Having escaped bureaucratic Delhi, leaving behind my troubled teenage life, I found acceptance in this city not for whose son I was but for my skills and talents and of what use they could be to others. This propelled me to try to find myself both economically and in my work," says Bartholomew.

7. Bartholomew says the show is a manifestation of his association with the "city and its people, known and unknown".

8. "I look back with warmth and gratitude at what the city offered me. It was with a grudging reluctance that I left the city in the mid ’80s; the death of my father and trouble brewing in the north of the country beckoned me as I entered the world of journalism," says Bartholomew.

9. Bartholomew says his departure from Mumbai "marked the end of the documentary phase of my work as I started to work as a journalist and had to turn to colour, abandoning the world of black and white". The show features more than 100 photographs.

10. Mumbai is India's richest city, but more than half of its people live in slums and on the streets.

11. On display are portraits of ordinary people going about their daily work as well as marginal characters like drug addicts and eunuchs.

12. Here, film extras, who Bartholomew encountered while working as a photographer in Bollywood, take a break in between the shots.

14. "It is a real city, a hard, intense place," says Bartholomew of Mumbai. "It had a democratic way that it treated many people of different faith, colour, belief; outsiders were absorbed in as long as they had something to offer the city."

1. Thick ice covering the River Danube began to break up on Sunday, bringing chaos to one of Europe's busiest waterways.

2. Boats were damaged, as were structures on pontoons. One boat owner said that out of about 100 boats moored at the Kapetanija marina, "only a handful" escaped unscathed.

3. Several floating restaurants were beached on river banks after the ice snapped anchor lines.

8. Others just stopped to look at the effects of the coldest weather in Serbia for many years. Ice more than 30cm (11in) thick in places broke up over the weekend as temperatures rose.

Revellers partied into Tuesday morning at Rio's colorful Carnival parade on the second night of the "greatest show on earth," with exquisitely decorated floats and lavishly - if skimpily - costumed performers. The night processions at Rio's renovated Sambadrome marked the high point of the pre-Lent festival, a national holiday that has brought the nation of 191 million people to a near-standstill. Sao Clemente, the first of six top samba schools to take centre stage at the Sambadrome, drew inspiration from a selection of popular Broadway musicals such as "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Cabaret". The school, known for its irreverence, had a float displaying a reclining Statue of Liberty in bikini and sandals holding an ice cream.

1. The Battle of the Oranges is a carnival and festival held annually in the Northern Italian city of Ivrea.

2. It includes a tradition of throwing of oranges between organised groups.

3. Dressed up as kings' guards, a group of men ride in a horse-drawn carriage and pelt 'foot soldiers' with oranges as thousands of people gather to re-enact a Middle Age battle when the townsfolk of Ivrea overthrew an evil king.

4. In a strange twist, instead of swords and cross bows, these days the weapons of choice are oranges.
