9 марта считается всемирным днём ди-джея (World DJ Day) — именно этот день является официальным праздником dj-ев всего мира.Начиная с 2002 года в рамках Всемирного дня ди-джея, 9 марта, по всему миру проходит благотворительная акция в помощь детским организациям.

Эту традицию DJ-благотворительности поддерживают известные средства массовой информации,такие как — MTV, Radio 1, Galaxy, Mixmag, DJ, Muzik,Hello, Face, Loaded и FHM, а также известные dj-ии,звезды мировой танцевальной сцены — Pete Tong, Danny Tenaglia, Sasha, Dave Seaman, Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, Carl Cox, Seb Fontaine, Sister Bliss и другие.

Первый раз слово диск-жокей (англ. disc jockey) прозвучало в 1934 г. от комментатора Уолтера Винчелла (англ. Walter Winchell). Он применил этот термин по отношению к радиоведущему Мартину Блоку (англ. Martin Block), первому диджею, который становится впоследствии звездой. Позже это словосочетание сократят до привычной нам аббревиатуры DJ, от которой появится новое производное словосочетание диджеинг, то есть работа диджея.

В 40-х годах радио оказывает влияние на клубы, виниловые диски постепенно вытесняют из клубов и танц-площадок живых музыкантов. К тому времени в барах США уже давно используются музыкальные автоматы проигрывающие пластинки, но техника не способна понять желание танцующей публики слышать только нужные им песни, поэтому для того чтобы вести вечер в ночном клубе требовался человек, который будет проигрывать диски. Так закрепилась вакансия диск-жокея в ночных клубах.

Later this word-combination will reduce to abbreviation DJ habitual to us from which there will be a new derivative word-combination, that is work of the DJ.

In the forties radio influences clubs, vinyl disks gradually supersede from clubs and tants-platforms of live musicians. By then in bars of the USA musical automatic machines playing records for a long time already are used, but the technics is not capable to understand desire of dancing public to hear only songs necessary to them, therefore to conduct evening in night club was required the person who will lose disks. So vacancy of the DJ in night clubs was fixed.
