Live From Home with David Berkeley, Zee Avi, and Christina Courtin.

Recently transplanted back to Atlanta from the tiny mountain village of Tralonca, Corsica (pop. 37—including David), David Berkeley story is the story of so many indie musicians: He first sang publicly at age 4 in the company of a traveling saleswoman. The New York Times’ Jon Pareles praised Berkeley’s “lustrous, melancholy voice.” He heard “shades of Tim Buckley and Nick Drake” in David’s music, a comparison also made by Rollingstone.com. Pareles went on to write, “as [Berkeley’s] melodies ascend to benedictions and consolations, the music shimmers and peals.” You may also have heard David recently on This American Life.

Zee Avi is just 23 but she’s an old soul. A huge talent in a petite frame bringing a universal message from the unlikely birthplace of Borneo, an ancient island east of Malaysia which remains an untouched, natural paradise, an apt description of her songs.

As anyone who’s caught one of Christina Courtin live performances can attest, the New York City–based musician decisively takes over whatever space she’s occupying, her long dark hair flying behind her as she paces the stage, her voice malleable and otherworldly, an irrepressible smile on her face throughout.

Tickets are $15, and guarantee admission but not seating. Wine, beer, and snacks will be available.

Rally Demanding Bloomberg Address AIDS, featuring Bill Thompson

Mayor Bloomberg recently turned down an invitation by AIDSVote.org, a coalition of New York City AIDS groups including Housing Works, to participate in an AIDS-focused mayoral forum. He refused to even fill out AIDSVote.org’s candidate questionnaire! Something every candidate for Comptroller and Public Advocate was willing to do.

Please join Bloomberg challenger Bill Thompson, representatives from Housing Works, the Women’s HIV Collaborative and dozens of people living with HIV/AIDS outside Bloomberg’s campaign headquarters to protest his refusal to state his positions on AIDS issues through the AIDSVote questionnaire. We will also take Bloomberg to task for failing to reform New York City’s outdated AIDS housing policies and attempts to cut HIV-prevention funding.

Thompson agreed to participate in the AIDSVote forum and filled out the candidate questionnaire, available at AIDSVote.org.

AIDS groups are particularly angry with the Mayor for failing to reform the City’s backward policy of letting people fall seriously ill before they qualify for AIDS housing. Legislation called HASA for All that would provide housing to all homeless New Yorkers living with HIV is before the City Council.

The AIDSVote questionnaire seeks answers from Bloomberg on a number of other issues including helping illegal immigrants access AIDS treatment and care, HIV prevention in prison’s and the city’s reliance on substandard SRO hotels to house homeless New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.

World AIDS Day Vigil

Critically lauded songwriter Ryan Adams will debut a new collection of his original paintings and mixed media collages at the Morrison Hotel Gallery’s Bowery space. Adams, best known for his output as a musician, has been quietly developing as a similarly gifted visual artist for years. Three weeks prior to the opening, Adams will become Morrison Hotel Gallery’s first artist in residence, creating additional canvases in the front of the gallery. Proceeds from the auction will go to benefit the Housing Works Bookstore, and the exhibition will be on display from September 24th to October 15th.

Equality to End AIDS March And Rally

As tens of thousands of LGBT Americans and their allies converge on Washington next month to march for equal rights, they also will remind the nation and the LGBT community that the AIDS epidemic is not over as well as remember the more than half a million Americans who have died from the disease.

The Equality To End AIDS rally and vigil will take place Saturday, October 10, the day before the massive National Equality March focused on LGBT rights. Equality To End AIDS will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 pm on the Ellipse (by the White House at 17th Street NW & Constitution Avenue NW) and feature an inspiring roster of speakers and performers (most of whom are HIV-positive), culminating in a candlelight vigil.

“The weekend is about achieving full equality for LGBT Americans. We need to use that political power to remind the country that the AIDS epidemic continues. A great many young people will attend the march; we need them to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS,” said Cleve Jones, the founder of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and one of the National Equality March organizers.

Speakers and entertainers at the rally will include singer/actress Sherri Lewis, Broadway actress and former Miss America Kate Shindle, members of the Diva League and Inner Light Ministries Choir, Rev. Kenneth Glasgow, San Francisco Human Rights Commission Chairperson Cecilia Chung, Shawn Decker’s Synthetic Division, poet Brandon Plain, gospel rap artist Desencé, singer/songwriter Dudley Sanders, POZ Magazine founder Sean Strub, Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson and Bishop Rainey Cheeks. Many of the speakers and performers are people living with HIV.

Join in a day-long interactive, interdisciplinary meeting bringing together researchers, providers, policy makers, advocates, consumers, and other stake
holders, to increase understanding of the scientific evidence documenting the impact and cost-effectiveness of housing for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and other chronic health conditions

The all day conference will include:

• Presentation of cutting edge national and local research on housing as a cost-effective structural intervention for HIV prevention and healthcare;
• Discussion of local HIV/AIDS housing need and existing models of care and program service applications that support improved individual and community health outcomes;
• Round-table consultations on: conducting research in resource limited settings; designing assessment tools to measure housing and health outcomes; incorporating cost analyses in evaluation studies; interpreting research results to improve program practice;
• Interdisciplinary exchange and cross-systems action strategies around local, state and regional application of research findings to affect needed policy changes

Who should participate:
• Local housing and homeless service providers, especially providers of HIV-specific services;
• State and local public health departments and other government officials;
• State and local agencies responsible for administering housing, public assistance, health, mental health,

“Early American Prints,” a Live Auction with Kathleen Guzman

On October 7, Housing Works Auctions will host “Early American Prints,” a live charity auction of 60 fine prints from 19th century America, including dozens by legendary engravers Currier & Ives. Housing Works volunteer and celebrity appraiser Kathleen Guzman will serve as auctioneer. The estimated value of the prints ranges from $100 to $1,500.

Guzman will also host a VIP cocktail party at 6pm for one hour before the 7pm live auction begins, where she, as well as other experts who have frequently appeared on Antiques Roadshow (Daile Kaplan, Nicholas Lowry of Swann Galleries, Eric Silver of Lillian Nassau, and Joyce Jonas, jewelry appraiser) will mingle with guests. The VIP event is $50 (the live auction is free).

AIDSVote 2009 Forum: Public Advocate and Comptroller

What will Bill de Blasio do to help undocumented immigrants living with HIV? What will David Yassky do to make sure more people get tested for HIV? Find out the answers to these and other questions as candidates in the 2009 election for New York City Comptroller and Public Advocate participate in a community forum focused on AIDS issues facing New York City on Tuesday, September 1 from 4pm to 6pm (venue to be announced later this week).

All of the City Comptroller candidates have confirmed their attendance (Melinda Katz, John Liu, Joe Mendola, David Weperin, and David Yassky). Confirmed Public Advocate candidates include Bill de Blasio, Eric Gioia, Norman Siegel and Alex Zablocki.

The forum is sponsored by AIDSVote 2009, a coalition of people living with HIV/AIDS and Gay Men’s Health Crisis, Housing Works, Lower East Side Harm Reduction, the New York City AIDS Housing Network, VIllage Care and other harm reduction service providers.

New York City remains the epicenter of the AIDS epidemic in the United States. New York City has more people living with the disease—104,000 residents—than any other city in the nation. With thousands more New Yorkers diagnosed with HIV each year, the city’s elected officials will face tough challenges regarding the lack of adequate AIDS housing, HIV testing, HIV in prisons, syringe exchange, care for undocumented immigrants and much more.

In order to find out where the Comptroller and Public Advocate candidates stand on these and other issues, AIDSVote 2009 sent questionnaires to the candidates. Highlights from those questionnaires are available online at www.housingworks.org/aidsvote.

AIDSVote 2009 will host a similar mayoral race forum before the general election in November. Details on that forum will be available later in the year.

Buffalo To British Columbia, Aids Activists Rally This Sunday To Support Lifting U.S. HIV Ban

WHAT: Coordinated rallies in U.S./Canadian border towns in support of lifting the despicable U.S. ban on HIV-positive immigrants and visitors. HIV-positive U.S. residents will cross from Canada to the U.S to emphasize the discriminatory nature of the ban.

WHY: The Obama administration has proposed lifting the two-decades-old ban on people living with HIV entering the U.S. Earlier this summer, up to 60 Canadians living with HIV planning to attend an AIDS conference in Washington, D.C. were barred from entering the U.S. because of the ban. The U.S. is very close to lifting this ban; national and international voices are needed to ensure that this is done.

WHERE:Peace Arch Park, Surrey, British, Columbia, the last stop before the Canadian U.S. border AND Veteran’s Way, Fort Erie Ontario, by the Peace Bridge

WHEN: The Surrey, BC event takes place August 16 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.
The Buffalo event takes place on Aug. 16 from 2:30 pm to 3:15 pm.

WHO: Hundreds of people living with HIV and their supporters from Canada and the U.S. Speakers at the Surrey, BC event include Surrey Mayor Barinder Rasode and Vancouver Centre Member of Parliament Dr. Hedy Fry. Speakers at the Fort Erie event include representatives from local AIDS Service Organizations from both Canada and the United States.
