The first “real” baritone I ever heard was Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He had a quality to his voice that I had never heard before (or since, for that matter). He had a powerful element to his voice; however, he was always able to keep it light. Unfortunately, he’s gone.

DFD was known for singing Schubert. This recording is one of the deepest cuts of the Schubert lieder and it’s the only song for which Schubert also wrote the text. Fittingly the translation means “Farewell”. Of all of Schubert’s great and important songs, this 1:47 is my favorite.

Here Ye, Hear Ye

The controversial musician T.I. has released his first single after being released from prison.¹ Here Ye, Hear Ye features a backing-track by The Neptunes’s Pharrell Williams. Williams is featured on the first verse of the track (operating under the name Sk8brd).

Speaking of verses, that’s all there is. No choruses, no instrumental breakdowns, none of it. It’s hard to even call them verses. The segments are very long and contain neither the musical or literary hooks that normally define the verses.

The song is 706 words of pure poetry more-or-less aligned to an electronic, nostalgic, synthesizer beat. The only repeated line comes at the very end and is the most poignent:

If wishes had wings, they’d all make it to heaven and we’d all be kings.

T.I.’s flow is impeccable. If he can manage to stay ou of prison and stop getting in gun-fights he has the talent to make a lot of art-music like this.

Michael Winslow (the guy from Police Academy) performs Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love.

I literally have no idea how he is capable of making these sounds. It’s beyond my comprehension. A YouTube comment (of all things) sums it up best:

MIX is a work created at RECYCLART in Brussels as a part of impactsessions.¹ It is “scored” for eight washing machines and lasts two hours and forty six minutes.

As the composers say, it is recommended that you listen in front of your own washing machine.

Contrary to what you might think, it’s not a joke. I found it very interesting and somewhat relaxing. That might be because my washing machine is front loading and the gentile revolution of my soapy clothes is mesmerizing.

If you won’t listen to it in front of your washing machine because you feel like a weirdo, you can listen to it in front of my washing machine.²

“Quintetto” is an installation based on the study of casual movement of objects or living creatures used as input for the production of sounds. The basic concept is to reveal what we call “invisible concerts” of everyday life. The vertical movements of the 5 fishes in the aquariums is captured by a videocamera, that translates (through a computer software) their movements in digital sound signals. We’ll have 5 different musical instruments creating a totally unexpected live concert.

The installation was born with the collaboration of the Aesop studio. In 2009 Quintetto wins the third prize at the “International contemporary art prize-Celesteprize” – Berlin.

So cool.

I heard Jakub Ciupinski‘s Morning Tale this morning on WQXR’s (awesome) Q2 Radio. I was immediately struck by the subtle use of electronics. The electronics are like another instrument that accompanies the piano.

Then the second movement started and I fell in love.
