Choosing Winter Wear For Short Hair Dogs

Choosing Winter Wear For Short Hair Dogs

by: Jenny Gregorich

Keeping your dog happy and healthy is at the top of your list of priorities, especially when your dog has short hair. Buying winter wear for short haired dogs is generally recommended to keep your dog warm during the colder months. Many dogs enjoy the winter and enjoy a romp in the snow. This is why it’s so important to pick the right winter wear for your dog.

According to experts, you will need to consider a few things before choosing the right clothes for your dog. Many coats cause static electricity and may even cause your dog’s hair to mat. Experts recommended spraying your dog’s coat with hair moisturizer after bringing him in from the cold. This helps keep the hair from getting coarse, and should be done just before you bring him back into the house.

When it comes to winter wear for short haired dogs, bigger is sometimes better. Many short haired dogs are large, and can benefit from clothing that covers most of their body. You can buy weather proof coats, some of which are lined with fleece to ensure warmth. You can also buy turtleneck sweaters for certain breeds, such as Boxers and Bulldogs, experts say. The sad part about is that few people think about buying clothing for their dog.

Of course, choosing the right winter wear for short haired dogs does not have to be difficult. If you’re leery about getting store bought clothing for your dog, you can make clothes yourself. You may be able to purchase prints to do so. You can knit sweaters, boots and even capes. Each of these garments is designed to protect different parts of your dog’s body. If you have a small dog, it is especially critical to make sure it has clothing to keep it warm during the colder months.

When it comes to dog clothing, most people think of sweaters and coats, but it’s equally important to think about your dog’s lower extremities, such as his feet. If you have a small dog, his feet are more likely to get cold, so bear this in mind.

If your dog plays in the snow, you may want to buy a rain coat. This will ensure that moisture rolls off and doesn’t get your dog cold. One thing to remember is that many people buy the wrong clothes for their dog. If your dog often fits through small spaces, you may want to purchase clothing that is closer to the skin, to avoid tearing. Many sweaters pull and may be more appropriate for dogs that stick to open spaces and do not engage in a lot of roughhousing.

Whatever you do, remember that your dog will respond differently to different garments. This often depends on the breed of dog. A small dog may not be as pleased with boots are as larger dog may be. Also consider your dog’s personality. This will help you determine how he or she will respond to clothing.

You will also want to make sure that garments are open enough that your dog can use the facilities.

He Most Common Dog Skin Problems
by: Jennifer Gretson

A healthy animal will also have healthy skin. If dog skin problems occur, it generally indicates that the dog has an underlying condition. These conditions can be caused by multiple factors, including infections, pests, and allergies. Stress or metabolic disorders can also create problems. When a pets external appearance noticeably worsens in any way, medical help should be sought. Letting conditions become chronic can cause further damage to the health of a pet. In addition, some untreated conditions are contagious and can infest other animals. Some can even be passed to humans.

The symptoms of problems are very diverse. Key behaviors such as frantic scratching, frequent licking, or even chewing should not be ignored. Pets might also signal discomfort by rubbing up against furniture or carpets. When these behaviors are recognized, a closer look should be taken at the fur and skin of the animal.

If there are any scabs, scaly patches, bald spots, rashes or lesions, a veterinarian should be notified. Other reasons for concern include redness, blood, pus, swelling, lumps or discoloration. There are many different conditions that can cause these symptoms and they are best detected by a professional.

Pests may be the source of problems. The bites and droppings of fleas can create lingering irritation. Some pets may even be allergic to the saliva in a flea bite, making matters worse. In addition to this, certain flea control methods readily available on the market can be aggravating.

Different infections can plague the skins surface. These include fungal, bacterial or yeast type infections. Fungal infections can include ringworm. Ringworm can result in the presence of scaly patches, baldness and irritation. Ringworm is particularly troublesome as it can be passed to other animals as well as people if left untreated. Bacterial or yeast infections normally occur only after the skin is compromised, further exacerbating the original problem.

Allergies can affect skin as well. These may be aggravated by naturally occurring irritants from the outdoors or allergies to food. Outdoor allergies improve or worsen with the seasons, and depend on the circulating amounts of dust, pollen, grass, or mold. Foods that typically cause reactions contain chicken, beef, soy, corn or wheat based ingredients. Food additives, such as colorings, can also be aggravating.

Problems may also have a behavioral component. A dog living in a very loud environment may experience heightened levels of stress. As a result, it may lick and gnaw at itself. It can also perform the same behaviors simply if it is bored. This is one reason why daily exercise and attention are very important for pets.

Most of these issues are preventable. One method of prevention is using only dog appropriate products on a dog. A hypoallergenic diet ensures that pets receive a nutritious and healthy meal without any artificial or unnecessary ingredients. Dogs should live in a calm, clean and quiet environment to limit stress levels and discourage the proliferation of pests. A veterinarian can provide a series of suggestions on how to further prevent parasite infestation.

A well trained pet is a beloved pet; a pet the whole family will enjoy-as well as neighbors and visitors. Just like young children, and even some adults, your dog needs to know who is boss, and it needs to know the rules they are expected to follow.

It is easy, after shopping around for the perfect puppy or dog to share your house with, to allow your new pet to have free reign and unrestricted access to the whole house. Later, you most often find you have regrets because your adorable, gentle puppy has gone on a rampage and chewed up your shoes or furniture. Or, your newly acquired fur-ball has left scratch marks on the door or left those dreaded messes all over the carpet.

Although part of the fun of having a dog is watching it get into mischief and discovering an unending bundle of problems, you soon become disillusioned the more frequently you have to clean up after him or repair things he has destroyed. A dog truly needs to learn to behave when it is young. You will join the ranks of responsible dog owners as you set aside the required time and persistence to train your new pet.

Well-trained dogs are better and safer for you, your dog, and those around your dog. As you continue to read, you will find some basic training tips to help you and your dog develop a happy, healthy relationship.

Step 1: Establish Rules

Step one necessitates you create well defined rules for your pet. The sooner you begin training your dog to observe these rules the more successful you will be.

If you allow your puppy to jump up on your bed, you can certainly expect your full grown dog to do the same. If no jumping on the bed is one of your rules, you cannot let your puppy be on the bed-not even once, not ever. You must be consistent for the sake of your dog and yourself. It is never too early to train your dog to get into the habit of doing what you want and avoiding behavior you do not want.

If you do not live alone, it is important to get together with everyone in the household and go over or decide the "do's" and "don'ts" of training your dog. Establish definite rules for some of the following:

• Sleeping on or being on beds

• Sleeping on or being on couches or chairs (any furniture)

• Learning to fetch

• Walking beside you with or without a leash

• Barking at the door when someone knocks or rings the doorbell

• Biting (whether for fun or in anger)

• Going potty on the floor or carpet

• Licking

• Whining

• Chewing

• Digging

• Jumping up on people

Make sure everyone involved in teaching and training your dog understands and buys into enforcing the rules you establish for what the dog will be expected to follow.

Step 2: Maintain Consistency

Being consistent is a cardinal rule when training a pet. Once the rules have been established, consistency in enforcing them by all owners is extremely important.

If your dog intentionally or unintentionally breaks one of the rules, it is important to correct it immediately.

One of the best and most preferred methods of correction is a simple, but sharp intoned "NO!" Each time a correction is made; however, it is important to show your dog the proper or acceptable behavior. By correcting the bad behavior and demonstrating the correct behavior, the correct or proper actions are reinforced. This type of training will work with all your rules whether it is house training, chewing on toys instead of shoes, or other desirable behaviors.

Dogs will learn best and quickest when the rules are enforced consistently and without fail. One of the main reasons dogs do not learn to "behave" is that their owners fail to take the time and be consistent in their training. Remember, learn for yourself the proper techniques to train your dog and be consistent in applying them.

Step 3: Offer Positive Rewards

Another important lesson to learn when training your dog is that positive reinforcement works. When your pet does follow the rules, reward them for their good behavior. The most effective and humane type of dog training uses positive reinforcement more often than punishment or negative reinforcement to produce desired results. Negative reinforcement generally takes longer to produce results, and it sometimes causes your pet to be apprehensive or timid when you are around it.

Starting out with yummy edible treats is very common. As your dog learns and becomes more familiar with the rules, you will be able to shift to other forms of rewards such as praise or affectionate attention when they obey. As you are consistent in providing positive reinforcement, your pet will soon learn that it is in their best interest to follow the rules.

Dog training is not a difficult task, but it requires a lot of time, patience, and most of all consistency to produce the type of trained dog you are looking for. Most all pet owners who make the sacrifice to train their dog up-front find they have a dog both they, their household, and their guests enjoy being around.

How to Stop Your Dog Digging Problem

By Thomas Toleman

Dog Digging Problems--Learn Some Easy Solutions

Having a dog is wonderful. It can provide hours of fun and enjoyment; however, when your dog starts tearing up your landscape, frustration often sets in and sometimes damages that wonderful relationship.

If you have been around dogs for very long, you know one of the activities they enjoy is digging. Dogs are great diggers, but unless you have a designated area, and you have trained your dog to only dig in that certain area, they can tear up a nicely manicured yard quickly. One of the big dog digging problems is digging under fences to escape. If you have a problem with a digging dog, read on for a few tips that can help.

Take Them for a Walk

One reason dogs dig is because they are bored or lonely. If your dog starts to exhibit the desire to dig, take him for a walk. Even a short walk can take their mind off the desire to dig. Be careful; however, not to walk your dog if you catch him in the act of digging. Walking him to replace digging could reinforce his desire to dig by seeming like a reward for digging.

If you catch your dog digging, discourage the behavior with a voice command or another predetermined training technique. After the dog has stopped, remove them from the digging spot and try to gain their attention through a different activity. After some time has passed, you may then take your dog for a walk. Always try to discourage negative behavior and encourage positive behavior through reinforcement of good behavior.

Give Them a Toy

Another successful technique to stop your pet from digging is to provide them with a toy. As previously mentioned, one reason for digging is boredom. The more entertained your dog is the less of a tendency they have to dig. You can find a lot of all-purpose toys to purchase from your local store, or you can purchase toys specifically created for dogs from on-line specialty pet stores.

Whatever you decide to do, consider another tip which is to occasionally vary the toys your dog plays with. Purchase a new toy for your dog every month or so or just have a few toys you rotate around so your dog does not get bored of the same old toy. Providing new and interesting entertainment is a great way to help your dog keep his mind off the desire to dig.

Provide Then With Training

If these simple techniques do not work, you are going to have to bring out the big guns-you are going to have to actually spend the time it takes to train your dog not to dig. You can either do this yourself, or you can hire a dog trainer. Either method will require a cost. If you choose to train the dog yourself, you will need to learn specific dog training methods and take the time to consistently apply those methods to train your dog.

The most effective methods of training your pet involve positive reinforcement. Avoid negative reinforcement techniques as they are generally not as effective and can create tension or even cause injury to your pet. The cost involved with training your dog yourself is the required time and consistency it will take to complete the task. Be aware that consistency is one of the most important parts of a training program, and it will take time.

The other option in training your dog is to hire a dog trainer. This method of training will of-course cost you monetarily instead of costing you time. Fortunately, there are a lot of excellent professionals who train dogs for a living. If you have a dog you feel needs the professional touch, or even if you have tried yourself and now need help, the choice of a professional dog trainer is a good option.

When looking for a professional trainer, spend the time to get referrals and take the time to interview each candidate. You will want to make sure you hire a competent, dog-friendly trainer to work with your dog. Also make sure the trainer uses positive reinforcement as the foundation of their training program.

Choose a Method and Be Consistent

Having a dog that consistently digs in the yard can be stressful and lead to unhealthy situations for your dog if it is a behavior you wish to discourage. Sometimes digging problems can be solved easily by consistently walking your dog or providing interesting toys for it to play with. Other times, perhaps in more entrenched cases, you may need to hire a professional trainer to help. You may try all or just a few of these techniques, but as you provide the encouragement for your dog to stop the behavior of digging, you will create a happier, healthier environment for you and your dog.

Pet Meds that Could Make Life Easier for your Furry Friends

Pet Meds that Could Make Life Easier for your Furry Friends

by: Jake Parkhurst

Having an animal in your life can be a remarkably rewarding experience. When you take a dog or a cat into your home you are giving them a chance at a bright and loving future. But of course, you will get a lot out of this relationship as well.

There is nothing like walking in your front door and being greeted by a happy, slobbering puppy. Few things are more comforting than sitting on the couch and having your cat quietly crawl up into your lap.

But caring for an animal is a lot of hard work as well. Not only do you have to make sure that they are eating right, exercising and getting a lot of love and affection, but you have to do everything in your power to heal them when they are sick.

Animals get sick just like people do, but the problem is they can’t tell you their symptoms. That is why it is important to take your dog or cat straight to the vet whenever anything seems out of the ordinary. Here are a few pet medications that you might encounter the next time your special friend is feeling under the weather.

Novox (carpofen) Caplets

There are several different occasions when your veterinarian might prescribe your dog Novox caplets. For one, they might help to reduce pain after your dog has had orthopedic or soft tissue surgery. More commonly, however, your vet will recommend Novox for dogs that suffer from osteoarthritis.

Arthritis in dogs is becoming almost as common as it is in humans. Part of this is due to over-breeding, but the main reason is that because of advances in veterinary technology, dogs are simply living to an older age these days. This medication will help to reduce inflammation in the joints and can also help to reduce pain.

In many instances, your vet will recommend a glucosamine product in addition to anti-inflammatory medicine. The Novox will help to reduce pain at the moment, but the glucosamine will help prevent it from getting worse.

Cosequin Soft Chews

Human beings will often use a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement to help maintain full functionality in their joints. Veterinarians have now developed similar supplements designed specifically for dogs.

Cosequin is administered to provide cartilage support to pets who suffer from arthritis. Even if your dog doesn’t have arthritis, you can talk to your vet and see if a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement like Cosequin can help to prevent it from developing in the future.

Cosequin is convenient because you can administer the chewable tablet with food. The best way to get your pet to swallow it is to wrap it up in a piece of cheese and pretend you are giving them a special treat. Just make sure they swallow the medicine and don’t just eat the good stuff and spit out the pill.

Amitriptyline Tablets

It can be frightening when your cat starts exhibiting erratic behavior. Grooming is normal, but sometimes cats do it so excessively that they can hurt themselves. Other times you might catch them spraying urine around the house. And sometimes you can just tell that they are going through separation anxiety every time you walk out the door.

Cats go through mental problems just like human beings do. Amitriptyline is a drug that can treat many of these behavioral problems in your cat. Not only can it help to curb behavior issues, but your vet may also prescribe it to reduce chronic pain from a nerve injury or to treat inflammation from a urinary tract infection. As with any medication regiment, be sure to talk to your veterinarian first to see if these tablets are right for your cat.

Gabapentin Capsules and Tablets

The first time you see your pet go through a seizure can be a frightening experience. Living with an epileptic pet can also make you nervous all the time. What if you are at the dog park and your pup suffers a seizure? Will it freak out the other dogs and lead them to attack your pet?

Gabapentin is a medication that is designed to help control seizures in cats or dogs. Sometimes your vet may also prescribe this drug to reduce chronic pain from a recent surgery or due to arthritis. For seizure control, your vet will normally recommend that you administer the drug three times every day. However, if you are only using it for a pain reducer, then you might only have to give it to your dog or cat once or twice a day.

The responsibilities that come with having a pet are well worth the rewards. When you do everything in your power to keep your dog or cat happy and healthy, they will be sure to repay you with unconditional love for years to come.

Does Your Family Really Want a Dog?

Does Your Family Really Want a Dog?
by: Brigitte Synesael

Look at that adorable little face! Can anything warm your heart as quickly and completely as the tiny soft body of a puppy... any puppy? Their little bodies nuzzle right up to you. Their little eyes melt your heart in a second. Who doesn't want a puppy? How wonderful they are; unconditional love, unlimited cuteness, too adorable for words.

This article was not intended to discourage you, but rather to help you prepare for this new addition and make sure this is the right decision for your family. There are several things to consider as your family discusses the possibility of getting a puppy.

1. The first thing is that every puppy becomes a dog within 1-2 years depending on the breed. You'll have up to 2 years of puppydom and up to another 13 or so years of adult dog. So don't think about how a puppy will affect the family. Think about how a DOG will affect the family; a much bigger, not quite so cute, likely not well-trained dog. So before you go looking for a puppy, spend some time with adult dogs of the breed you've chosen and see if you're still interested.

2. The second thing to consider is the expense of having a dog. Costs will vary depending on the size, the breed, and the health of the dog. There's the initial cost of your new pet. A truly responsible dog owner will NOT support puppy mills. Watch for future articles about puppy mills. It suffices to say that puppy mills exist only because people buy the puppies. No customers, no business, no more torturing and abusing dogs. So you'll either get your puppy from a reliable breeder or from a rescue shelter. There will be a cost associated regardless of which you choose. Most rescue shelters charge approximately $500 regardless of the breed. Rescue shelters are non-profit. This fee pays for food and vet bills to spay or neuter our furry friends. Occasionally dogs require surgery or other medical attention. You can see that this figure is by no means an absolute. The purchase price from a breeder will vary depending on the breed of dog and the breeder.

So many of the costs are dependent on the decisions you make. Will you use a dog crate for house training or when no one is home? What sources will you use for training; books, videos, training lessons, a combination of all three? Will you provide your pet with just a bowl on the floor or a water fountain which constantly circulates the water ensuring your dog has fresh water at all times. You could spend up to $2,000 in your first year for basic essentials; licence, collar, dog walking leash (perhaps a couple of different kinds), water bowl, food bowl, food, toys, dog bed, grooming equipment, dog crate, gates and fences for the yard, vet bills (puppies need check-ups, dental checks and vaccinations just like your children did), flea treatments, heart worm medication, some dogs require professional grooming every 6-8 weeks, any behaviour training supplies.

After the first year, depending on your dogs' health, you can expect to spend between $500 and $2,500 each year for basic maintenance; again this amount has a lot to do with the breed of dog you've chosen. This does not include additional carpet/furniture cleaning as a result of inevitable pet "accidents". There is also the cost of replacing "doggie chewed" items like children's toys, nic nacs, shoes, wallets, purses, pillows, bedding, and other items your dog naughtily entertained him/herself with. This also does not include medical emergencies like your dog eating chocolate, or aspirins, or other poisonous items, or any accidental injuries that may occur.

3. Next, examine your lifestyle. Dogs are incredibly social animals. Your dog, just like your children, will require large amounts of quality time. (No wonder people get their pets confused with their children. There are so many similarities.) It's irresponsible to bring a dog into your family and then leave him/her alone for 10 hours every day. Think about how many hours will your pooch be left alone each day? Remember to include after school or work activities like baseball, soccer, hockey, karate, ballet, tennis, overtime work hours, etc. in your "away" time.

How many people are in the family? What age are your children? Toddlers or smaller children may not be a good combination with a larger, more aggressive dog.

Puppies have little bladders and need to go out about every 1 to 2 hours; adult dogs at least 3 times a day. That's just a "potty" out.

Your dog will also need exercise. All dogs need exercise! Think in terms of 30 to 60 minutes each day for all dogs. Beyond that you need to take your specific pet into consideration for additional exercise needs. Ignoring this means that your dog will be bored and may start behaving badly. How much more exercise depends on the breed. Border Collies, Jack Russells, Doberman Pinschers, Labrador Retrievers, English Springer Spaniels, Boxers, Irish Setters, and Huskies, typically herding dogs to name a few require at least an hour of vigorous exercise at least twice each day.

Many dogs require mental stimulation in addition to the physical. This is playtime and training time and it's equally important as physical exercise. Time... time... time. If you can't commit to this for your dog, you will want to consider a breed that is less demanding. Shih Tzus, Pugs, Poodles, Basset Hounds, and Beagles require much less of an exercise commitment. Will your children be able to help you walk the dog each day? Will they be able to handle a large dog or perhaps a smaller dog would be more suited to your family? Or perhaps this isn't the right time for a dog.

I cannot impress upon you enough how important it is to seriously consider these points before making a decision. Think of this as important a decision as having a baby. You can't "try it out and see if it works". If it doesn't "oh well" and do away with it. It's not fair to you or your family, and it's not fair to the dog. Perhaps you're reading this and logically thinking "She's right. I don't have the time, or the money." But still your heart is yearning for a dog. There is a solution. Offer to babysit someone else's dog while they go away on vacation. If that works out well, try fostering a dog. Fostering means that you will care for a "rescued" dog until a forever home can be found. Because this is a temporary situation, once your "charge" is placed, you can choose not to take any more, if you decide that having a dog is not the right thing for your family. This is a great way to "test the waters"; to see if your family is truly ready for the responsibility of having a dog. You'll learn a lot about training and how to deal with dogs and at the same time you are offering a tremendous service to our wonderful canine companions.

Remember to hug your dog today.

There Are So Many Great Dog Life Vests On The Market Today

There Are So Many Great Dog Life Vests On The Market Today
by: Gina Sales

Spring is near! Warmer weather means enjoying the beautiful outdoors and water activities. For dog lovers who are lucky enough to own a boat or who are fortunate to be able to incorporate water with their active lifestyle, flotation life vests for us humans are a must. The same should apply for our four-legged family members. Some of the most common breeds such as Labs and Goldies were engineered to love the water, while other breeds like our two Shibas require a little persuasion. Regardless of what type of dog or dogs you own, if you love the water, your dogs will eventually love the water too.

Swimming comes natural for dogs - almost as natural as walking or running, and is a great form of exercise. Hydro-therapy has also been proven to greatly improve a dog's recovery from injury or anxiety, and you can't forget the resulting bond that is strengthened between you and your Pooch. Needless to say, the advantages of incorporating water into your dog's active lifestyle are well documented.

Your dog could be the Michael Phelps of the dog-swimming world, but you can never be too safe when it comes to water. Here are some suggestions : Never leave your dog unattended around water, and always have your dog wear a vest if you and your family are planning on enjoying the water for an extended period of time.

The properties and technology behind dog lover's favorite dog life vests such as the EzyDog Seadog Flotation Vest or the Kurgo Surf N Turf Life Vest are for the most part, similar. Quality construction incorporating high-buoyancy materials such as foam or rubber, water-repelling materials like neoprene or nylon, and multi-functioning features such as carry handles or D-Rings.

These flotation apparatus are also ergonomically designed to fit dogs of all sizes, and allow for full range of motion when walking, running, or swimming. It's easy to find the right size for your dog. Your Pooch is fitted correctly if the vest spans the entire length of the back from the base of neck to the base of the tail. The vest should also wrap completely around the chest and belly, or have at least three attachment points on the underside of the life vest, not only to keep your Pooch comfortable, but also to ensure a safe and secure attachment that prevents your Pooch from slipping through the jacket.

Dog life vests like the Doggles Flotation Jacket take it one step further by adding a flotation pillow that conveniently and securely attaches to the underside of your dog's neck, preventing your dog from dipping its head below the water surface.

If your pooch enjoys the water, keep them safe and get a dog life vest. There are great brands to choose from out there that are actually affordable, so finding one for your four-legged love one will be easy.

Puppy Mills - A Sad Reality

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Thu, 12 Jul 2012 15:12:00 +0000

Puppy Mills - A Sad Reality
by: Brigitte Synesael

What are they? Wikipedia describes them in this way: "A puppy mill, sometimes known as a puppy farm, is a commercial dog breeding facility that is operated with an emphasis upon profits above animal welfare and is often in substandard conditions regarding the well-being of dogs in their care."

Although accurate, it is an incredibly diplomatic way to describe the horrific conditions in which these dogs live. Correction, they don't live, they barely exist.

There are varying ideas of what exactly constitutes a "puppy mill". However, everyone will agree that the following is an accurate description and although extreme, an all too common a practice of puppy mills. Where to begin; there is so very much wrong with these places.

Puppy mills are run by people who breed dogs for profit. Now, there's nothing wrong with making money or even making a profit. The problem with these people is that they are beyond irresponsible and are actually cruel and negligent to these animals. Their greed is so intense that they will have anywhere from several dozen to hundreds of dogs and the health and welfare of the dogs is not just compromised, it's completely disregarded. From the first time a dog is able to get pregnant (as early as 6 months of age) she is bred to have puppies. Depending on the breed each female dog could have 2-4 litters every year. It's not healthy for them to do so, but these irresponsible millers will make every effort to capitalize on every breeding opportunity. They are interbred and bred with dogs that have health issues that will be passed on to the puppies. These female dogs will spend their entire lives pregnant. When they can no longer breed they are put to death; usually with a hammer to the head because euthanasia through a Veterinarian costs money.

Having so many dogs barking and yapping constantly is not in the millers' best interest. It could alert outsiders to the puppy mill site and is quite likely annoying to the millers who keep these poor animals in a tortured state. Many puppy mills "debark" some of the dogs. This requires that some of the vocal cords are clipped resulting in the bark becoming more of a whisper. That, in itself, is a controversial topic as scar tissue can develop in the dog's throat making it difficult for the dog to breathe. Personally I don't agree with this procedure at all. However, if this must be done, it is possible for a Veterinarian to do this through surgery using anaesthetics. A puppy mill, however, will not spend the money for this procedure. They perform it themselves by shoving a large, metal pipe down the dog's throat. Assuming they haven't killed the dog by missing, they will have ruptured the vocal cords. This is done with NO anaesthetics and I don't believe for a moment that it is pain free. There is no protection; and no medical attention afterward.

They are only fed barely enough food to keep them alive. The quality of the food is substandard; the cheapest the millers can get away with. Often the food consists of what was swept up from the floor of dog food manufacturers. There is so little nutritional value in this food that the dogs' teeth rot at very early ages. The dog dishes are never cleaned and maggots are often present in the food. The water bowls never have clean water and often contain urine and feces from the crates stacked above. There is no protection; and no medical attention afterward.

The dogs are kept in small cages, often too small for the dogs to move around. Often there are several dogs in on cage. If a fight takes place, there's nowhere to hide or get away from the attacker. There's no protection; and no medical attention afterwards. So open wounds are left open to get infected, and body parts that are bitten off or broken are left unattended.

Typically these are wire cages which are never cleaned, so the dogs have no choice but to sit in their own excrement causing their open wounds to be infected and often causing diseases. It's common for their paws to get stuck in the holes of the cages and their legs get badly cut or broken by the wire while they are on their own to free themselves. There is no protection; and no medical attention afterward.

The dogs are never removed from the cages, never free to roam about, never walk on the ground or the grass. They're never loved, or hugged, or petted, or brushed. Their coats are so badly matted they often need to be shaved right down to the skin. Severe matting causes very serious health issues; bacterial and fungal infections. Untreated mats become bigger and tighter. This pulls on the dogs' skin and is very painful. No air can get under the mat and any moisture can't dry. Shedding hair gets caught in the matting and ultimately rots. The dogs' skin becomes irritated and ulcerated. Fleas, ticks, and other parasites nest and breed in the dogs coat causing further skin infections. Severe matting is grounds for charges of animal cruelty. In a puppy mill there is no protection; and no medical attention.

The dogs and their cages may or may not be sheltered in a garage or broken down barn, but they are not protected from extreme temperatures. Many dogs suffer from exposure as there is no heat to keep them warm so they have to endure freezing temperatures in the winter time. The heat is so intense in the summer that many of the already weakened dogs suffer from heat stroke, and some of the delicate puppies literally fry to their death on the hot wire cages. In a puppy mill there is no protection; and no medical attention.

Because of the horrific conditions these dogs are forced to live in, the dogs end up with countless diseases which are passed on to their new litters. Some of the common conditions are hip dysplasia, kidney disease, respiratory disorders, eye problems (including retinal atrophy, glaucoma, and many others), deafness, heart disease, and many other serious health problems. It's common for puppy mill puppies to arrive in your home with fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, distemper, upper respiratory infections, mange, pneumonia, heartworm, and these just name a few. In a puppy mill there is no protection; and no medical attention.

When you buy a puppy, you may not be aware that it's from a puppy mill. You bring this adorable puppy home and you love him/her, and you play with him, and he/she very quickly owns your heart. A few months later your puppy get sick and you take him to the vet. Over the next few months you've spent thousands of dollars in an attempt to restore the health of your beloved new pet. Within too few months your beautiful new puppy has died because of a disease or genetic defect caused by the over breeding, inbreeding, and the unsanitary conditions at the puppy mill; and a part of your heart goes with him. Now you, too, have become a victim of the horrible, cruel conditions of the puppy mill.

How did that happen? How did you get a puppy mill puppy? You bought him from a reputable pet store. Or maybe you answered an ad in the paper, or bought him on kijiji or e-Bay. Or perhaps you were well aware, but you wanted to "rescue" this one puppy and believed you were doing the right thing. Unfortunately, by rescuing that one puppy you've supported and encouraged the entire puppy mill industry and confirmed to them that there is a market for them to continue torturing these animals. There is only one way to stop the greed of the puppy mill breeder. No customers. No customers equals no profits, and that's the only reason puppy mills exist. Most pet stores sell puppy mill dogs. Some know exactly where these puppies come from and lie about it, and others buy from a third party or broker and are lied to about it. Often the lineage papers are falsified to give the illusion of a pure bred dog. It is an educated guess that there are approximately 10,000 puppy mills in the United States alone. Because puppy mills try to stay in hiding, no one knows for certain. But it is estimated that 60 million puppies are born in puppy mills each year. This is much more than "just a problem". This is a catastrophe of pandemic proportions.

It would be fabulous to have enforceable government legislation to prevent puppy mills. That would help, but it will not eliminate them. There's only one thing that will truly put an end to them completely... an educated public. Only YOU have the power to truly stop them. Millions of dogs are put to sleep each year because of overcrowding. There is really no need to support puppy mills. There is an endless supply of good healthy dogs to adopt; many of them purebreds. Contact your local animal shelter or humane society. If you have your heart set on a puppy or a particular breed of pet, go to a legitimate, licensed breeder. You may have to wait a bit for the proper timing of the next litter, but it will absolutely be worth it. Legitimate breeders breed for the love of these animals; they are committed to improving the breed. Their dogs are well cared for, and the parents are screened for genetic diseases. To find a good breeder you can start by asking your local Veterinarian for a referral.

Here's a tip to ensuring you're dealing with a legitimate agency or breeder. A true, reliable breeder will never sell to a pet store. You will likely be asked to fill out an application and go through an interview process before you are given a dog. If someone just gives you a dog because you want one and have money; that should be a huge "red flag". Good breeders and shelters are interested in matching our canine friends with appropriate, responsible families that will treat the dog properly and give the dog a good home.

You should always be welcome to visit the home where your potential new dog was born and raised to date. If, for any reason, you are refused this request, you are likely dealing with a puppy mill. Don't get scammed by a puppy mill. Some ads over the internet or in the newspaper may offer "free to a good home" dog. Then they charge $300-$500 for shipping and possibly bogus medical attention (check-ups or shots for example). Don't fall for it! For more information about puppy mills visit the ASPCA (the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) http://www.aspca.org or the CFHS (Canadian Federation of Humane Societies) http://www.cfhs.ca.

So choose your pets wisely and remember to hug them today.

How Much Food Should I Give My Dog?

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Thu, 12 Jul 2012 15:06:00 +0000

How Much Food Should I Give My Dog?
by: Brigitte Synesael

You would think that feeding your dog would be the easiest part of your responsibilities as a dog owner. Wrong again! You'll need to make some decisions and that means you may have to do some homework.

First of all are we talking about a puppy or and adult dog? That will make a difference as to the amount of dog food required. When thinking in terms of food, puppies are typically considered adults at the age of 1 year at which time you would switch to adult food. If there's any doubt or concern about this, or if you just want to be safe, consult your Vet. Your Vet is a fabulous resource for any questions you may have and it's always a great idea to consult with him/her on anything concerning your precious pet.

For obvious reasons, the proper feeding of your dog is extremely important. Over feed and you put your pet at risk for obesity and serious health issues. Under feed and you end up causing a problem dog that chews on toys, books, etc. and steals food off the counter or table and is constantly into the garbage. (Find Product)

How often should you feed your dog?

Next decision... regular scheduled feeding or free feeding. Free feeding means that you keep food in the puppies bowl all the time and he/she eats whenever their hungry. There are different schools of thought regarding free feeding. Some Veterinarians feel this is the best option for your puppy because they're growing quickly and may require more food one day than another. Others suggest feeding your puppy about 4 times each day.

My personal vote goes with the later. Here's why... Free feeding your dog can be difficult if you have other pets (trying to keep the other pets away from it). Then, when your puppy becomes an adult, one short year later, you'll need to retrain your dog to eat only once or twice each day. If you continue to free feed your dog throughout adulthood, you are setting the stage for an overweight dog and likely serious health issues. (Find Product)

Having said all of this, my recommendation would be to feed your puppy 4-6 times each day. They're little and have lots of energy. They need to eat often to fuel their little bodies and mature properly. Maintain a regular time schedule for feeding, and leave the food available for 15-20 minutes. Then take it away. If your puppy is hungry he'll eat, if not he'll have another opportunity in a few hours. Upon adulthood reduce the feedings to 1-2 times each day.

You'll notice that there are no absolute answers to the number of times each day to feed your dog. That's because there are so many variables involved in determining the answer; age, size, breed, how much exercise does your dog get, is your dog underweight now or overweight, how many treats does he/she get each day. Each of these points need to be considered before deciding how often to feed your pet. I absolutely recommend that you consult with... guess who? Say it with me... your Veterinarian! He/she can help you set up the perfect schedule for your pet. (Find Product)

What about that People food thing? Okay? Or not so okay?

The answer is... not so okay. Truth be told, in moderation, some people food is harmless. However there are some foods that can be very harmful to your pet. For instance it isn't a good idea to trim the fat off your meat and feed it to your dog. This kind of fat overload can give your dog pancreatitis which causes chronic abdominal pains.

Ham & bacon are too salty and contain too much fat. This can cause your pet to have pancreatitis and, in some breeds, could ultimately result in bloat. Bloat is a potentially life-threatening condition arising from your dog drinking too much water from the salty food.

Large amounts of liver can cause vitamin A toxicity. This is serious because it affects the muscles and can cause deformed bones. Because vitamin A also has an impact on the metabolism, severe weight loss and anorexia is also a concern. (Find Product)

Any dairy products like butter, cheese, and milk are harmful to your dog. They weren't designed to eat these types of food so their bodies can't digest them properly. The consumption of these products could cause bloating and diarrhea in your pet.

Bones, particularly small bones from chicken and fish can get lodged in your pets' throat which can cause choking. Bones can also cause splinter and tear a dog's internal organs.

Cat food is much higher in fats and protein than dog food. Just like baby food, dog and cat food is designed with the specific needs of each animal in mind. The extra fat is not healthy for your dog and eating cat food instead of dog food means that your pet is missing essential nutrients for his/her health. That's why it's called Dog Food and Cat Food, not Pet Food. (Find Product)

Chocolate and caffeine are toxic to dogs and negatively affects their heart and nervous system. Chocolate can cause seizures, coma and ultimately death. One 1 ounce of baking chocolate can poison a 10-pound dog. There are different kinds of chocolate some not as toxic as others. But let's face it... does it matter? None of them are good for your pooch, so a BIG no on this treat.

Of course there's the obvious... drugs and alcohol are absolute no no's. You might find it comical to watch a tipsy dog, but I'm sure that you will not see the humour in knowing that the alcohol you gave him put your precious pet into a coma and possibly resulted in his death. (Find Product)

There are many other people foods that can cause serious health issues for your dog. There is enough evidence that many foods are harmful for your pooch that the simplest solution is to just NOT feed your dog people food at all. Another bonus to this solution is that you will not have a dog that begs for food while you eat at the table. There are so many treats that have been designed especially for your pet that it really just makes sense to stick to those. What should you feed your dog?

Which is the best for your dog, dry food or canned food? That's the great debate. There are pros and cons to both, so... let's make a list:

Dry Dog Food Pros

Helps keep dogs teeth clean from tartar

More nutritious

Dogs have better breath

Easier to store

Easier to handle

More cost effective

Less likely to spoil

Wet Dog Food Pros

More proteins included

Contains fewer preservatives

Contains less grain and more moisture keeps a dog hydrated and benefits the urinary tract

Is very flavourful, often the preferred taste for dogs

May be better if your dog has certain health issues

Dry Dog Food Cons

Not all dry foods are quality foods

Usually has more preservatives

Wet Dog Food Cons

Sticks on dogs teeth causing tooth problems

Requires more dental treatments

Gives dogs bad breath

More expensive

Less healthy because it contains a higher fat content and more water

Once opened canned food can spoil quickly

Now that we've gone over the list of pros and cons, let me say that absolutely nothing is carved in stone. Your dog may have a health issue that requires him to eat canned instead of dry. For example, dogs that have lost their chewing teeth or have dental disease may not be able to chew dry dog food, and may only be able to eat canned food. I fostered a dog once that would only eat her dry dog food with 2 tablespoons of canned food mixed in. (Find Product)

You will find that some experts promote canned food for puppies and switch to dry food for adult dogs. The obstacle with this is that it's difficult to make the switch.

You may have a dog that is a really picky eater or one that gulps his food with the speed of light and then throws up. These dogs need your help. Work out a plan with your Vet. This article was not meant to have all the answers. It was intended to give you some things to think about. It's not as simple as "grab a bag of dog food from the store" and we're good to go. As a responsible pet parent, you've got some things to think about. Now, talk to your Vet, ask your questions (be sure to ask for the rationale behind the thought), and together build your strategy.

Above all else, remember to hug your pet today.

Is My Dog's Breath Supposed To Stink?

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Thu, 12 Jul 2012 14:54:00 +0000

Is My Dog's Breath Supposed To Stink?
by: Brigitte Synesael

Well, I wouldn't expect any dog to have "minty fresh" breath, but it shouldn't smell so bad that you can't be near your canine friend. There could be several reasons for your dogs' bad breath including a broken, decayed or abscessed tooth, mouth tumors, periodontal disease, gingivitis, diabetes, sinus infections, and inflammation of the gums, kidney disease, and gastrointestinal problems. This is not an exhaustive list, but you can clearly see that it's not as simple as "fixing your dogs' bad breath". You'll have to

become a bit of a detective. We'll start with some trial and error. (Find Product)

If the bad breath is temporary, then it's quite likely just something your dog has consumed. Pay attention to what your dog eats (and gets in to). Some canned food will result in foul smelling breath. Raw meat can have the same results. A naughty dog that dines on the garbage regularly will also cause bad breath. If any of these are possibilities, then I suggest you find a way to keep you pooch out of the garbage and/or change his/her dog food to see if that makes a difference. If it is just bad breath from something your favourite friend has eaten, you can squeeze a drop or two of lemon into his water.

If you've ruled out anything consumed, it's time to consider a possible health issue. The most common cause of foul breath in your canine is periodontal disease. Just like people, food particles get stuck in between your dogs' teeth. Decomposed food causes bacteria and this combination results in plaque. This is no different than in humans. Plaque appears as a yellowish, brownish film on the dog's teeth. As with humans, untreated plaque will develop gingivitis and will ultimately progress into periodontal disease. All dogs need their teeth brushed. Brushing their teeth is the best way to proactively prevent this health issue and it is also one of the best ways to resolve it while it's in the early stages. (Find Product)

You can purchase toothbrushes especially for dogs, or you can use a soft bristle toothbrush. You may also want to consider a finger brush; a rubber cap with rubber bristles that goes over your finger. Some dogs aren't comfortable with the toothbrush and you may have better luck with the finger brush. If you start brushing your dogs' teeth when he/she is a puppy, there shouldn't be any problems with it as an adult dog. Even if you're starting with an older dog start by letting him/her sniff and lick the toothpaste. Make this a positive experience. Lots of praise and be very gentle. You may not get all the teeth brushed the first time. It's more important for both of you to have fun with it.

As for toothpaste... do not use people toothpaste. It shouldn't be swallowed and dogs don't like the taste. You can buy toothpaste for dogs or make your own.

Mix:

6 tsps. baking soda

2 dashes of salt

4 tsp. glycerine

2 tsps. either beef or chicken broth

You can try 2 tsps. of peppermint extract for the "minty fresh" breath, but no guarantee that you dog will like it. If there is evidence of swelling of the gums or gingivitis, adding a little crushed sage may help with the swelling. (Find Product)

It's important that you provide your pet with chewing opportunities. Dental chews can be purchased and will help to prevent tartar and plaque build-up. Bones, rawhide, dried pig's ears etc. are a great way to avoid plaque build-up. Be careful of the bones you choose; heavy shin and shank bones are best. Do NOT give your dog chicken bones. You can also take your dog into the Vet on a regular basis for a thorough teeth cleaning. It's also possible that there is an abscessed or decayed tooth that may need to be extracted. The only solution to this is a visit to the Vet. In fact, as we have already discussed, there are several health issues that could be the cause of your dogs' bad breath. Each of these would have to be diagnosed and treated by your Vet. During this time you should keep a close eye on your pet for anything out of the ordinary. Watch for symptoms like abnormal drooling, blood or other discharge from the mouth. Is your pet sneezing or is there a discharge coming from his nose? Is he pawing at his mouth? Is he having difficulty eating or not wanting to eat? Do you notice any swelling in his face?

Also check out what's happening at the rear. Is your dog constipated or does he have diarrhea? Is he passing gas? Bad odour from both ends... big trouble! Is he scratching himself? Does he eat grass but not his food? Is he vomiting? Anything you notice should be brought to the attention of his Vet. (Find Product)

The important thing is to remember is that there could very well be a serious health issue involved, and your dog doesn't have any other way to tell you or to ask for your help. If your pets' bad breath is not resolved, take him to his Vet.

Remember to hug your pet today.

Mind Stimulation for Your Dog

Mind Stimulation for Your Dog

by: Brigitte Synesael

Do you come home from work and find your garbage strewn all over the house? Are there holes dug all over the yard? Do you find chew marks on your furniture? Has the stuffing been pulled out of your couch? Are all of these and other naughty things being done by your lovable pet pooch? The cause is simple. Your pet is bored!

Now a more challenging question; what do you do about it? All dogs need to do more than eat, sleep and love you. All dogs need exercise to start with. A walk isn't just about having a pee or a poop. A walk is a fabulous way to build a strong bond between you and your dog, and an opportunity to demonstrate to your pet that YOU are the leader. As Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer, would say, "YOU need to be the Pack Leader". Remember that when you walk your dog, you should be the first one out of the house, the first one back into the house, and your dog should walk beside you or slightly behind you. (Find Product)

I know that we all love our dogs and often think of them as our children... our babies. Truth be told, in order to provide your pet with what he/she truly needs it is important that you think of your dog first as a dog, and then consider the characteristics of the breed. Then you need to remember that your pet is also an individual.

Some breeds need more physical exercise than others. Some need more exercise than others. Herding dogs, as an example, were bred to herd or move livestock. This "job" requires intelligence and an enormous amount of running and endurance. There are dozens of breeds belonging to the "herding" family of dogs including the various types of Sheep dogs and Shepherd dogs, Collies, and Giant Schnauzers to name a few. Other breeds like Jack Russell Terriers, Shelties, and sporting dogs, although not herding breeds, are high energy breeds; requiring more exercise than some lower energy breeds. Think in terms of a 5 mile RUN (not walk) each day as a guide. Also, you can ride a bike or roller blade while your pet keeps up beside you. (Find Product)

On the other side of the spectrum; Poodles, Terriers, Shih Tzus, Schnauzers, Bull Dogs, and Pugs, for example have a much lower demand for exercise. Understand that these dogs still need to be walked, at least once each day for at least one hour.

You'll know if your dog is getting enough exercise based on its' behaviour and weight. If your dog is gaining weight you're either feeding him way too much, offering too many treats, or not giving him enough exercise. If your dogs' weight is fine and he's behaving, then the exercise that you're giving him is likely sufficient. Remember, too, that older dogs will need less exercise than puppies. If there is any question or concern, get advice from your Vet.

One thing to note about walks is that you do NOT want the walk to be about your dogs' bathroom duties. Dogs absolutely LOVE their walks. If the walk is over immediately after the dog does his "business", he will try to hold it so the walk will last longer. In fact he may wait until you give up and go home, then do his business in the house. It will work better for you if you wait for the dog to "potty", and then reward that behaviour with a one hour walk. (Find Product)

If you have some reason that you're not able to provide your dog with the kind of walks he requires, there are a couple of things you can do. For high energy dogs you can put a back pack on them filled with water bottles. The extra weight will add more of a challenge on their walk and tire them out quicker. You can also consider purchasing a treadmill. There are treadmills designed specifically for dogs that can also accommodate the speed that your canine companion needs. When using this type of device please do NOT leave your pet unattended. Any number of accidents can occur if no one is watching. Besides, you can still use the "pack leader" attitude and strengthen your bond while your dog is on the treadmill.

Now that covers the dog walking part of this segment. Here's another newsflash. Dogs also need to be mentally stimulated. Again, the amount of stimulation necessary is dependent on the breed and the individual dog. If there's any question or concern, remember your Vet is an excellent resource and can guide you appropriately. (Find Product)

Mental stimulation can take numerous forms. Rough housing with your pet can help to stimulate them mentally; as does training. Once they're completely "behaviour" trained, you can work on fun tricks. Playing catch or fetch is also helpful. These activities can be fun for both of you, enhance the bond between you, and keep your pets mind active. You can also consider agility training for all the same reasons. NOTE that before you begin any serious, intense regimen you should consult your pets' Veterinarian. Some agility drills can be harmful for your dog under certain conditions; like dogs suffering from arthritis, hip or joint problems, or young pups. Agility drills involving a lot of jumping can be too stressful for young developing joints. Intense weaves are another obstacle you'll want to be careful of when training your puppy.

Swimming is a great activity for your dog. Most dogs enjoy it; it's good exercise and builds strength. You can have a lot of fun with your dog while swimming. It can also be easier on the joints of an older dog. Again, please check with your best resource, your Vet to make sure this is a good activity for your specific dog. There may be a health issue that would be aggravated by a particular activity. I know, like any good parent, you want what's best for your pet. (Find Product)

Is puppy training absolutely necessary?

As anyone who owns a dog will know, if you train a dog early enough it will save you time and money in the long run, not to mention it adding a few years to your life by avoiding unnecessary stress. A dog can be almost as time consuming as having a child. Puppy training is a must for anyone, unless you want to be chasing your dog down the road or changing your carpets on a yearly basis, you won't think twice about it. You and your dog will benefit from puppy training and the household in general will be a lot better off. Find Product

Can't I just do the puppy training myself?

Many people make the mistake of thinking they can do the puppy training themselves. It is not impossible of course, however most people would benefit from taking the dog to the professionals for the puppy training. It isn't just the dog that needs training; it is also the dog owner. The professionals know exactly what they are doing and have seen every scenario there is. Like humans, each dog is an individual, and the dog trainers can mould each training session to each dogs needs. Find Product

Bringing a new puppy into your home?

by: Ramk

Bringing a new puppy into your home?

Puppies will grow up very quickly. Know how to train them right and they will become a good natured and well-mannered adult dog.

Before You Search For A Puppy

Before you get a new puppy, make sure you know exactly what kind of puppy to look for and how to raise and train him. Find Product

Deciding Which Type of Puppy

The breed, type, size, activity level, hair color, hair length, and gender of your prospective puppy are personal choices and best left entirely up to you and your family. You will probably have read lots of well-meaning advice from pet professionals that advise you, for example, not to get certain breeds if you have children, not to get large dogs if you live in an apartment, and not to get active dogs in the city. In reality, all breeds and types of dogs can be wonderful or problematic with children. It very much depends on whether or not the puppy was trained how to act around children and the children were taught how to act around the puppy. Because of their lower activity levels, large dogs adapt more quickly to apartment living than little dogs. Big dogs just take up more space. And active dogs can live in cities just as active people live in cities. In fact, city dogs tend to be walked and exercised more than suburban dogs. In the long run, it will be you who will be living with your puppy and teaching it to adjust to your lifestyle and living arrangement. Find Product

Selecting Your Individual Puppy

It is vital however, in your puppy search that you know how to evaluate whether your prospective puppy is physically and mentally healthy. Research your prospective puppy's lineage to confirm that his grandparents and great-grandparents all lived to a ripe old age, and to check how many of his doggy family suffered from breed-specific problems. Long life is the best indicator of overall physical and behavioral health and the best predictor that your puppy will have a long life expectancy. Research well and most of all, please take your decision to get a puppy seriously. Each year, several million dogs are abandoned, given to shelters and euthanized, almost entirely because easily preventable and utterly predictable puppy problems were allowed to develop into much more difficult to resolve adult behavior, training and temperament problems. Train your new puppy and you will have a well behaved, loveable, forever family member!Find Product

How to Shake the Winter Blues and Make Some Extra Money by Pet Sitting

by: Robert W. Benjamin

The snowy days of winter, what does it mean for you? To most folks winter means a time of slippery sidewalks, nasty roads, flu season, and something that can be much worse for others, the Winter Blues. The winter blues does not generally happen to someone who is busy all day with things to do in the winter, because they keep active and energetic, as night time approaches, they relax and go to sleep. Now, since you have enough extra time on your hands in the winter, that it causes you to get the winter blues, lets discover a great little activity that can help fight against it and earn you some money too. Find product

You must live in either a house or an apartment, and if you live in an apartment you can still do the activity I am going to talk about, but you probably won't have the same options as a homeowner has. Almost everyone sooner or later dreams of starting a home based business to make some extra money, or to be able to work part time doing something they love. There is one business that anyone can start with no upfront money needed, all that is required is patience and kindness, and this is the business of Pet Sitting.

In the cold of winter, folks still need to go to work, or on trips, and at these times, pets need to be left in someone's care, and this is where they need the services of a ' Pet Sitter '. There are two ways you can operate your own pet sitting business, if you own your own residence, you can watch pets inside your home, having the pet owners drop off their pets at your residence. This puts you more at ease, and you have more time to devote directly to your home duties as well as the pet sitting business, since you don't have to spend time traveling to the pet owners residence. If you have an apartment, you may not be allowed to have pets, and in this case you would have to watch the pets at the owners residence. Simply hang some signs on store bulletin boards and place a little ad under the 'Services' or 'Pet' listings in you local Newspaper classifieds to let folks know that you want a job pet sitting. Make sure you have some knowledge of the pets you will be sitting, for instance read and learn about them all you can, dogs and cats are pretty easy, birds are harder, but snakes and lizards or turtles may be totally unique and could even pose a danger to you, if your not familiar with them. Pets need sleep and rest time, they need activity or exercise, they need food, water and warmth, some even require medication at certain times of the day, but all pets need patience and love. Make sure you have emergency telephone numbers, so you can call the owners veterinarian or pet clinic in case you have too, and you may also need to get in contact with the pets owner, so don't forget the telephone number where they can be reached at. Now, when winter comes and you have nothing to do, keep busy with pet sitting and earn some extra money, while you help shake the winter blues. Find product

You and Your Dog’s Weight

You and Your Dog’s Weight

by: Porch Potty

Weight problems are not uncommon in our canine companions, and dog owners usually find it difficult to keep their overweight pets in shape. Modern feeding methods can sometimes add extra weight, as well as the many misconceptions owners have about how much and how often they should feed their dogs.

First, you have to consider how much food your pet actually requires. To fully comprehend our canine friends’ needs, we have to look at how wild dogs survive and what they eat. Find Product

In the wild, dogs live on rabbits, rodents, berries, and by scavenging. They only eat once a day on average, sometimes two to three days between meals. Domestic dogs’ systems are built on this same pattern of eating.

If we feed our dogs every day, they will store fat for lean times. However, if there is no lean time, they will only get fatter and fatter. Hence, feeding them two to three times a day will lead to obesity.

An adult dog needs only one average size meal per day, and ideally should completely abstain from food one day per week to help burn excess fat. Canines should not be given sweets as these will only increase their risk of obesity. Find Product

Grown dogs should not be given cow’s milk, as it is far too rich and can cause gastric issues. However, if you would still like to give your dog some milk, go for the special brands of dog milk, which can be bought at supermarkets. If your pet is overweight, be aware of how much you give him.

Several folks believe that desexing causes obesity in dogs. This is not completely true, since it is only the animal’s interest in food that increases after desexing. Owners of desexed canines should keep their pets’ food intake the same as before. Instead, you can offer raw bones, which will satisfy even the hungriest dog without adding any fat.

Various brands of diet dog food, which can help your pooch lose weight, are also available. Bear in mind that dogs that are the right weight tend to live longer and have a more active and enjoyable life.Find Product

The positives and negatives of re-homing a rescue dog.

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Sat, 07 Jul 2012 08:21:00 +0000

The positives and negatives of re-homing a rescue dog.

by: Nicolette Craig

Before you commit to spending hundreds of pounds on a pedigree puppy, take the time to consider an alternative- re-homing a rescue dog.

Every year around 100,000 dogs are abandoned in the UK. Contrary to popular belief, very few of these dogs are ‘problem dogs’. Most have been abandoned due to their families moving, new babys, death of an owner and other domestic problems- none of which are the dogs fault.

There are many benefits to rescue dogs. Most are older than six months old so they have been house trained and no longer chew everything in sight and some have even been trained. Many rescue centres also insist that their dogs are neutered and vaccinated before they leave the home so this is another worry taken off your mind.

Things you should consider:

Most rescue homes will want to do a home check before they let you take a dog. Gone are the days when they would let you take a dog as long as you could prove that you had a dog bed and a can of dog food. You must be able to prove that you are able to exercise your dog regularly, have an adequate home and garden and will want to see if you have any other pets. They will also take into consideration the character of the dog and whether it fits in with your lifestyle- there is no point in adopting a dog that hates children if you have three kids for example.

Some dogs may well have been abused or mistreated. As such they may have abandonment issues, may be nervous, aggressive or have medical issues. As a potential owner you must be willing and able to deal with these problems and be prepared to give your dog a lot of love and patience.

The reward for dealing with this initial bureaucracy is often the most fun, beautiful, happy, healthy dog that you could ever wish for, plus the warm glow of knowing that you have given an unwanted dog a new home.

For more information about rescue centres either ask your local pet supplies store or contact one of the main rescue centres such as The Dogs Trust, The RSPCA or the Blue Cross.

Finally, if you are stuck on having a particular breed of dog, why not consider looking at pedigree rescue sites. Most breeds have them (a list of some of them can be seen on ‘The dog rescue pages’) and they can provide you with a wealth of breed specific information as well as a gorgeous new pet. Find Product

Is Your Dog Safe In An Auto Accident?

by: Lori Kniff

This is the story how Toby met a policeman.

One day, my car was rear ended at a very busy intersection near my home. The other driver was a very young man, only sixteen years old. He was very sweet, and had genuine tears for fear he had hurt me. As a matter of fact, he had reason to cry because he had knocked me a full two car lengths ahead, and his 1971 VW Classic Rabbit, well, it would have to be picked up in paper sacks! The back end of my nearly new Honda laid in the middle of the street, also in pitiful pieces. He had no insurance.

I was shaking and crying when I called 911. I’m ashamed to say that when they answered, I could only tell them where I was, but I had difficulty telling them my name. They asked me to spell it, and I couldn’t even say my difficult name, let alone spell it. I think that’s why they sent an ambulance. I then handed my cell to my new friend so he could call his mother.

The ambulance got there first. They were giving me oxygen and doing the usual agenda when the law arrived. I was all right, and I knew it by this time, but the medics were making sure and they asked me to stay where I was and let the law “do their job”. So I stayed where I was.

The policeman was a tall, big man, with a ‘no nonsense’ kind of a face; all business. He was the kind that you would hoped to heaven would be on your side. He asked me for my driver’s license and proof of insurance. I started stammering, again, but managed to tell him that they were in my purse in the front seat of my car. Then I managed to tell him that I had two dogs in there, and when I left them they were fairly calm, but I didn’t know how they were now. I couldn’t guarantee it.

“How big are they?”

“Well, the fat one is 23 pounds, and will possible lick your hand, if he is not too upset. The other dog weighs 10 pounds, and is not friendly.”

He snickered. I could hear him snicker!

As he turned away, he said, “No problem”.

I then went back to the business at hand, letting the law “do their job”.

Soon after, the ambulance driver tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Look over there!”

He was pointing in the direction of my car.

The officer had a very, very long stick in his hand and was trying to get my purse out of the front seat. My little dog, Toby, was up on the back of the seat, just waiting for him to make his fatal move. Her little ears were laid back, her hackles were raised and she was crouched ready to spring. Her teeth were bared and she was growling so loud I could hear her as far away as I was sitting.

My little spotted heathen had waited her whole life long for an opportunity like this!

But that wasn’t the only reason the policeman’s face was red. He was embarrassed. As people will do, a crowd gathered to watch this show, and they were enjoying it immensely!! They were stopping to watch. Several were telling Toby, “Stick to your guns, little dog!” Some were asking the law if he was going to arrest her, and one man driving by, hung out his car window and shouted, “CALL FOR A BACK UP!”

Soon after, the policeman walked over to me and asked, “Lady, how much did you say that dog weighs?”

“She weighs 10 pounds. Did she bite you?”

“Yes she did, in two places!” He showed me his hand and forearm. It looked ugly! It really did. Of course, I told him how sorry I was, in all sincerity.

“Has she had her shots?”

I felt PANIC, but I told him the name of our veterinarian, and that she had just received all of her shots. Fortunately, that was the truth, and she also had her two year license. Thank the Lord, we were legal.

On our way home, I bought Toby a pork chop.

A few days later, I received a letter in the mail from the County Health Department, informing me that they had checked Toby for a previous record and had found her ‘clean’. At the bottom of the page, someone had drawn a smiley face and had written, “Have a nice day”. I was so relieved. I bought Toby another pork chop.

I’m getting old, and Toby is getting old too. I have visions in my mind of Toby and me growing old together, with me going on welfare trying to keep Toby in pork chops. I see her growling at every squad car she sees. I know she will never forget THAT policeman.

But she and I will be very happy together, I don’t have a doubt. Find product

Learn how to Put an end to The Causes of Aggressive Behavior in Dogs

by: Gary Diaz

Dog aggression can begin as young as about six weeks of age, a crucial age when a puppy should be socialized to many other dogs and supplied the necessary training that keeps them from biting on other people. This phase of socialization will last till the puppy turns fourteen weeks of age and can increase further beyond that.

This indicates a number of things. First, do not take a pup outside of its litter prior to 8 weeks of age. Never use severe discipline with the new puppy in between 8 and 10 weeks and be sure the puppy is very softly dealt with in that time frame. Hitting, yelling and other hard punitive measures at a young age can easily breed aggressive behavior within dogs as time passes.

Your pet will need to have been properly socialized together with people and also other dogs as soon as your dog got to fourteen weeks to stop any future aggression problems.

Actual aggression can be brought about from several factors. Inheritance along with genes are certainly reasons - some breeds can certainly be far more aggressive than the others - however it's in no way a hard fast rule. Additionally, dogs which have never been neutered or spayed tend to be at risk from aggressive behaviors.

By far, however, the key factor in creating aggressive tendencies in dogs is environment. A dog that has terrible living conditions, harsh owners, zero socializing, or that's terrified or assaulted by a different dog is far more likely to be aggressive as it ages.

Aggression can build from the need to create a pack pecking order. Biting, posturing, along with other aggressive tendencies in many cases are the effect of a dog testing to get dominance. You will need to create dominance at a young age and maintain that role throughout the dog's adolescence to ensure it won't get a chance to take control over the family unit.Find Product

Curtailing and Managing Aggressive Behavior in Pet dogs

When your pet dog exhibits aggressive behavior after 14 months old, when it has hit sexual maturity, particularly after it has been nuetered altered, make sure you address the case right away. First, ensure you established yourself as the pack leader. Don't reward the dog for aggressive behavior, even if it is fearful (particularly in this case).

Train your pet to respond to your instructions, control feeding and walking time, and make certain the dog has got a strong alpha dog inside your home. When you defer towards dog or allow it to take liberties at home, it is going to present stronger aggression toward others.

In case your pet dog is defensive-aggressive, it's possibly that they strike out at a person in fear. These dogs might possibly not have been adequately socialized. Keep them faraway from young children (which they may see as direct threats) and attend a dog training program or behaviorist who can gradually adapt your pet to a social atmosphere.

Aggressive behavior in your dog has become a concern that a great many puppy owners have, but it could in fact be managed, even as the dog gets older. If your aggression ever advances to violence, consider employing a skilled professional to intercede before somebody gets harmed and your pet dog will be held accountable.Find product
