TRAI Banned Porting After SIM Card Swap

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has changed the rules and to disallow telecom subscribers to port out of their current network provider if they have “swapped” their SIM card for any reasons like after loss or damage of a previous card, within the past seven days. The move is part of several anti-spam measures the TRAI has taken, even as fraudulent and spam calls surge as a concern.

The regulations prohibit telecom operators to issue a “unique porting code” (UPC) which is the first step of changing providers using mobile number portability. This amendment would “result in preventing [the] porting of mobile connections soon after SIM swapping/ replacement, by fraudsters in the name of new subscribers,” the TRAI said in an explanatory memorandum.

The TRAI has also recommended to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) a feature that would display the legally registered name of every caller on recipients’ handsets. The DoT has launched Chakshu, its own portal for reporting “suspected fraud communication”.

The DoT had asked the TRAI to examine a suggestion that telecom firms be required to match the identity of subscribers when they port out from one operator to another.

Currently, mere possession of an unblocked SIM is considered sufficient, and know-your-customer processes are done afresh, a policy that benefits minors (who legally cannot get SIM cards in their names), or other dependents whose SIMs aren’t registered in their names. The TRAI said that this suggestion — of double-checking KYC during porting — will be “examined separately”.

TRAI Makes Callers Identity (CNAP) Mandatory for Telecoms in India. The recommended CNAP model will see phone calls in India show the name on which a number was registered with a telecom operator when a phone call is received. It will be similar to calling app Truecaller. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has released the final set of recommendations to introduce caller identification (caller ID) as a default feature across domestic telecommunications networks, nearly two years after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)’s initial proposal for the same.

The final set of recommendations proposed that all telcos “should provide Calling Name Presentation (CNAP)" as a “supplementary service" to customers “upon their request." The recommended CNAP model will see phone calls in India show the name on which a number was registered with a telecom operator when a phone call is received.

With the launch, Reliance Jio has now become the first and the only operator in Madhya Pradesh to launch 5G services across all prominent large cities of MP including the capital city, Bhopal, and Indore, an official statement claimed.

Almost all the telecom service providers are now supporting eSIM. Follow the below steps to activate the eSIM on Airtel Network whether 4G or 5G.

For converting your physical SIM to eSIM

1. Send a SMS as eSIM<>registered email id to 121

2. You will receive a SMS from 121, confirming initiation of the process. You would need to reply back with "1" to confirm the eSIM change request within 60 sec.

NOTE : If your email id is invalid, you will receive a SMS from 121, asking you to re-initiate the process with the correct email id, will also guide you on how to update the email id.

3. Post receiving the confirmation sent by you for step"2", you will receive another SMS from 121 asking you to provide a consent over a call, failing which the SIM change request will get cancelled.

4. After providing your consent on the call, you will receive a final SMS from 121, regarding the QR Code which you will receive on your registered email id.

After the Step 1 is complete, you would receive a QR Code on your registered email id. The eSIM activation would take around 2 hours, please scan the QR Code immediately upon receipt. Your existing SIM will continue to work during this period.

5G Spectrum Auction - Reliance Jio Bids for Rs 1.45 Lacs Crore

Jio Free Domestic Voice Calls from January 1

Telecom operator Reliance Jio has announced the free domestic Voice calls from 1st Jan 2021. Off-net domestic voice calls will be free for all its users countrywide. Earlier, the interconnect usage charges (IUC) had been eliminated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) as part of the Bill.

"Honouring its commitment to revert off-net domestic voice-call charges to zero, as soon as IUC charges are abolished, Jio will once again make all off-net domestic voice calls free, starting 1st January 2021," Reliance Jio said in a statement. They also added that Jio stands firm on its commitment to make the common Indian the beneficiary of advanced technologies like VoLTE.

Reliance Jio had earlier started charging 6 paise per minute for off-net calls to its customers from October 2019 after TRAI extended the timeline for implementation of IUC regime in September 2019 to January 1, 2021.

It is expected that Jio will slightly modify its plans in the coming days in accordance with the removal of its IUC charges. Reliance Jio may also lose out on the revenue from IUC as it has the largest subscriber base and the majority of the calls originate from its network.

The major beneficiary of latest TRAI order are Airtel and Vi as theyhave a smaller subscriber base when compared to Jio will likely gain from this. Airtel records 3.8 million new subscribers in September – more than twice that of Reliance Jio’s additions

Xiaomi is all set to launch their much awaiting Laptops in Indian Market - It is already launched in china a long back. Recently, the Chinese firm has posted a teaser on Twitter suggesting it is bringing its laptops to India.

The teaser doesn't reveal anything about the Laptop specifications and no ideas whether Xiaomi is planning to bring its RedmiBook to India, or if the brand will launch the Mi Notebook series in the country.
