Techie Tuesday: How-To Add a Pinterest Pin Button to your Images

I don't know if you've noticed, but you can now hover over any image on The How-To Gal and a Pinterest button will pop-up.

If you click that (P) button, you can automatically pin the image to your Pinterest account. Pretty cool, right? It is really easy to install to your own blog, too. I used the tutorial at BloggerSentral and it is so simple to understand and recreate, I'm sending you their way.

Yarn Wrapped "H"

Awhile ago I posted about an ombre flower letter for my daughter's room. I wanted to do something similar for my new baby boy's nursery. I updated an old oval frame and I added a yarn wrapped letter to fill the empty space.

Didn't have my camera, so these are all iPhone pics, sorry.

I found some super bulky yarn at JoAnns that was clearance priced for $2.97. The gray was spot on, so I grabbed two skeins. Once I got home, I started wrapping a chip letterboard I already had.

You really don't need to used a whole ton of glue. I made a thin line with my hot glue gun and it was enough.

Make sure to keep the same tension while wrapping so the look is uniform.

After the letter was covered, I glued on some sticky velcro I had leftover from another project and stuck it to the wall.

The frame happily surrounds the H and the texture the yarn brings into the space is fabulous.

Antlers in Home Decor

I've been thinking about antlers in home decor A LOT lately. And I'll tell you why. When we moved into our new home, guess what I found hanging in the tree outside:

This bad boy.
Seriously, the biggest antler I've ever laid eyes on.

But what do I do with it? Do I sell it? Put it in my house? Trash it?

My cousin Sandra loves antlers in decor. Did you read her post a few days ago?

And she's not the only one! There are tons of people taking what once was considered "hunting lodge" decor and modernizing it.

Pop of Color: Red

All the beautiful, vibrant colors outside made me feel my nursery needed some pops of color, too. Orangey red went perfect with the palette.

The original color of this squirrel was a nasty tan. I sprayed it with Rustoleum Fire Safety Red and the difference is crazy awesome. Don't you think?

I noticed that the overspray from my high-gloss spray paint turned sections dull that were once shiny. To fix the problem I sprayed a final coat all over the piece.By spraying everywhere one more time while it was all wet it eliminates those dull, textured spots.

Even the curtains got a makeover! I purchased the pom pom trim at JoAnn's with a 50 percent off coupon.

I have two frames that received the same treatment as the squirrel and his nut. Eventually, they will get a saying or picture inside.

Finding inspiration from my backyard. Springtime is lovely.

Mother's Day DIY Idea: Freestanding Photo Gallery AND a Giveaway!

Reaching into the archives to share one of my most favorite projects, the freestanding photo gallery. It's a really easy project with a huge impact. AND it makes a fantastic Mother's Day gift. hint. hint.

Here's what you need:

Paint or stain
Paint brush
Mod Podge
1 inch hinges- I used 6 hinges
Drill/Screwdriver

Step One: Go to your local hardware store, and purchase a board with a width and thickness you like. I chose 3'x 10"x 1" and had them cut it into 5 10" x 10" pieces.

Step Two: I stained the wood pieces except for the middle area on the front.

Step Three: Once your boards are dry, begin the mod podge process. Put a thin layer of mod podge on the board and on the back of the photo.

Step Four: Place the photo onto the board in the center. Be sure to smooth out the bubbles as best you can.

Step Five: Once the photo is dry, apply another coat of mod podge on top. Smooth out any bubbles.

Step Six: Once the pictures are dry, flip over and mark where you need your holes drilled. I measured 1 3/4 inches from the top and bottom.

Step Seven: Install your hinges with your screwdriver or drill.

Step Eight: Connect all of your wood pieces.
Side note on the hinge installation: I installed my hinges in an "innie" direction so that the bulk of the hinge hid between my boards. Whichever way you choose, try to do it uniformly so all the hinges look the same from the back.

And there you have it!

Did you know searching for antlers that elk and deer have shed is a hobby? If you are against hunting and love the rustic vibe antlers provide, find someone in your area who collects them. Craigslist would be a great source to look.

To be honest, that is not how I came across these antlers. My husband enjoys hunting and these are his trophies. Before you start judging, we process all the meat he obtains and eat it so it is not just for sport.

A few weeks ago I received a package from Cricut in the mail with a couple of white t-shirts and some of their new iron-on vinyl. The challenge? Create something wearable. I decided to make something for each member of my little family with the supplies (more projects to come!) I thought my husband's look would be the hardest, but it turned out to be the easiest.

Isn't he dashing? I'm one lucky gal.

I initially cut out a large bike from the iron-on material for the shirt's design. But when I laid it out on the shirt, it was too literal for me. The pieces cut out of the bike were far more interesting.

So I threw caution to the wind and ironed on the negative space pieces. I love the results.

Best of all, the hubby loves it, too.

$5 Doormat to Statement Rug

Do you ever see something beautiful and think, "I could make that!" I do. It is a blessing and a curse. Sometimes, once a project is complete, I look back at the hours spent and think, "I should have just bought it!"

This was not one of those projects. From start (buying the before rug) to finish (putting it in front of my door) the project took me an hour and a half.

You see, about a month ago I was inspired by one of Nate Berkus' beautiful arrowhead rug at Target. But for $30, I figured I could make one of my own for less.

And I did. I picked up a $5 black rug from Wal-Mart and got to work.

Step One: I cut my triangles out of Cricut's new iron-on vinyl in gray.

Step Two: Measured my rug to see where best to put my three rows of triangles.

Step Three: Marked three lines down the rug with white crayon.

Step Four: Arranged the points of my triangles on the line drawn and ironed in place.
Helpful Hint- When ironing Cricut's iron-on vinyl onto carpet, you need to hold the iron in place for at least a minute (instructions say 30 sec) because it is such a heavy material. In fact, once the triangles were stuck pretty well to the carpet, I peeled off the outer lining and ironed the triangles again with a towel over the top. This adhered the vinyl right down into the threads of the carpet.

Lovely! It isn't a perfect match to the inspiration, but I think I like it better. Bigger triangles, more personality AND I made it for $5. Go me!

Color Indecision and Inspiration

My mind has been focused on color lately. Wall color, carpet color, tile color, paint color, door color...the list goes on and on. Color inspiration is essential when renovating or redoing a home.

To aid in my color search I browse online, a lot. Hey, what else is there to do when the kids are asleep? Clean? Psh. My favorite haunts to find beautifully decorated rooms are places like Houzz.com, Pinterest and HGTV.com. But really, color inspiration is easy to find. From Pantone's color of the year (Emerald) to Blue sapphire engagement rings to beautiful gray couches, inspiration is everywhere.

Loving emerald right now. Truth be told, I love it in fashion more than home decor.

Gray couches. Swoon. Maybe I'll get one for my birthday? :)

After all of my searching and research, I finally settled on a gray-tone for the walls. Remember my inspiration board? I think gray will be beautiful canvas for the bright blues, greens and golds I want in the room.

The only issue is that there are four million different shades of gray. I'm serious. Don't believe me? I went through four different color books and had nightmares about color names like sweatshirt, elephant, concrete, charleston and silver bullet. With the help of an awesome sales guy at Kwal paint, I am now the proud owner of six colors of gray paint cans. Yes, I narrowed it down to six. And each of them is painted on my entry room wall:

Yeah, I guess I'm a little indecisive. Who wouldn't be when it comes to picking the color for your entire house to be painted? We finally decided on a color of gray though. See that large patch in the bottom left corner? It's called "Silver Lining" from Kwal paint. Depending on the lighting, time of day and angle you look at it, the color changes. I love it.

My contractor is almost finished painting the basement and I should have pictures to show the end of next week! Eek! So excited.

Homemade Laundry Soap

While visiting my parents, I noticed my Mom wasn't using her normal Tide to do laundry. I asked about the new concoction and decided to give it a try. It was a recipe she got from my sister and all three of us have been impressed by how well it works and how inexpensive it is compared to normal detergent.

Ingredients Needed:

1 bar of Fels-Naptha
2 cups Borax
2 cups Super Washing Soda

Shred your bar of Fels-Naptha. My daughter wanted some "cheese" and I had to convince her that she wouldn't like the taste.

Combine the three ingredients. Make sure to mix very well.

Put it in a container and you are done.

Pretty simple, right? It doesn't sud up like normal washing detergent but I felt it cleaned just as well and it only takes one tablespoon per a load. I'm always an over user when it comes to detergent though, so I use two tablespoons and with whites throw in some bleach.

Why Hello There!

Happy Monday everyone! I'm especially chipper today because of a happy new project I finished this weekend.

My front door has a glass insert and it just doesn't feel wreath-friendly. I wanted to create something that welcomed you to our home that could be used all year long, but that could be attached to a stucco wall. The wheels inside my crafty brain turned for quite awhile and I eventually ended up with this:

You may think I'm crazy, but you know I love me some string art. I think my new "Hello" sign is the perfect solution to welcome guests. Want to make one of your own?

What You Need: (I had all of these supplies on hand, so this project was FREE for me!)

Plywood
Paint
Hammer and Nails
Traceable Letters
Yarn
Screws and Hanging Wire
Clear Coat Spray

Step One: Paint your plywood.

Step Two: Measure the size of the plywood and the distance you want between each letter.

Step Three: Trace your letters.

Step Four: Hammer nails around your traced letters. Be sure to evenly space your nails.

Step Five: Begin wrapping. Knot your yarn around a bottom nail and wrap around all of the edges of the letters. I wrapped the edge of my letters five times before starting on my criss cross pattern.
P.S. If using the word "Hello" make sure you don't run out of string like I did at "HELL" and then let it sit unfinished in your front room for a few days. It is a great conversation starter, but not the best way to welcome guests :)

Step Six: Spray the entire thing with a protective coat of clear coat spray to guard it from the elements. I mean, it is yarn so it won't be 100% waterproof, but the clear coat should help.

Step Seven: Use a picture hanging kit or screws and hanging wire to mount your board to the wall.

Next project is that hideous orange door. I'm thinking a nice, cool black.

My husband thought I was nuts when I first told him my plans, but now he agrees it is pretty freaking awesome. What's your vote? Crazy awesome or just plain crazy?

Kid's Nook with Cricut Iron-On Vinyl

If you've been watching my Dream Home board on Pinterest, you'll see that I have several different pins of under-the-stairs play areas saved.

In our basement remodel, we've converted the under-the-stairs area into a tiny playroom for little E. Right now it looks like a mess, but I've been experimenting with decor ideas while the paint dries and carpet is installed. Of course, this is just a mock setup, but I pretty happy with the direction it's taking:

Cricut just release some seriously amazing iron-on vinyl and I used their hot pink color to make a few pieces for the nook. I'm hoping to use more hot pink and light blue in the space. Maybe in organizational bins?

I used the Mini Sampler Cartridge (standard quilt) to create the pillow.

I used Sandra's DIY pillow tutorial for a quick and easy accent for her miniature leather chair.

Then with the extra pieces cut out from all of the circles, I made some embroidery hoop art.

I'll be honest, I like the flower art better than the pillow! It just feels so fresh and fun.

And I can't tell you how easy Cricut's iron-on vinyl is to work with. Remember all that time I spent cutting, peeling contact paper and painting for projects like this in the past? I LOVE this new solution and see many more projects in the future.

Wood Shim Sunburst Mirror

My latest Pinterest-inspired project was this lovely mirror by Kristen from K Sarah Designs:

It has honestly been a long time coming. I started this project at the beginning of February and am just now finishing it up. If you follow me on Instagram, you're probably tired of the teasers:

I followed Kristen's tutorial, but changed the design of the spikes a little. I also skipped the primer step and went with two coats of Krylon Dual in metallic gold instead.

She's finally done! Swoon, I'm in love!

And although my craft room isn't even near completion, I hung the sunburst mirror above my tiny workspace until she can move to a more permanent home.

She really is beautiful. A lot of work, but worth it. Kind of like me! What do you think?

Mid Century Modern Clock Makeover

I have been scouring all my favorite haunts for a clock in my nursery and almost passed this one by at the thrift shop. Maybe it was the weird Star Trek hand that threw off my vision. After a second glance, I knew it had the mid century potential I wanted and would only take a few tweaks to fix.

The first thing to go was the spaceship. I just clipped off the edges and then sanded down the sides with a nail file. Originally, I was planning on taping everything off or freehand painting the dials, but upon further inspection realized I could just pop them off--even better.

To remember what went where, I stuck each piece into cardboard with the original layout. The only white Dual spray paint I had was flat, so I used it to prime and then went over it with some white gloss I had from Rustoleum.

After the paint dried, I reattached the hardware and hung the beauty up. At a total cost of six bucks and minimal time, this was a rewarding project that reminded me why I love doing DIY.

Eclectic design is what I am always drawn to and makes me happy. The retro modern look of this clock mixed with some of the other vintage items works perfect in my nursery!

App Review: Book of Mormon Touch

Every weekend I ~~dread~~ look forward to Sundays and the prospect of keeping my 3 1/2 year old quiet during three hours of church. I usually resort to snacks, threats and bribery to keep her quiet, but most recently I let her play with the Book of Mormon Touch app. I love going to church now because I can actually sit and listen to the speakers without worrying that my little girl isn't paying attention, making too much noise, etc. I like it so much, I had to share it with all of you.

For those of you who aren't familiar with The Book of Mormon or the LDS Church, click HERE for more information.

Book of Mormon Touch is a kid-friendly app that covers four different stories in the Book of Mormon (more content and stories is coming soon). You can choose from three different ways to enjoy the scriptures: Story Mode, Sticker Story or Build-a-Scene.

In Story Mode, the reader is led through each story with fun graphics and easy-to-read content. My daughter's favorite part was clicking on each character to find surprise word bubbles. If your child isn't old enough to read, you will need to read it to them (narration coming soon). We read the stories at home before church so E knew the stories and could scroll through them silently at church.

Once you know the stories, you can switch to Sticker Mode. In Sticker Mode, the user can drag each character's "sticker" and place it onto the story board. This was E's favorite game. She loved matching the sticker shapes to the people and seeing them click into place. Once you've complete the scene, the story line pops open below.

The last option is Build-a-Scene where the user can create their own stories with all of the different Book of Mormon characters and a TON of other images and backgrounds. When your child is done creating a scene you can share it on Facebook or via email. The above image is one that my little E created. Apparently even Book of Mormon characters like to have fiestas...in space!

Easy DIY Pillows

Remember this post when I mentioned the fabulous rug I was getting for my nursery? Well, I may or may not have splurged and purchased a new rug for our living room as well! It arrived a little more navy than the charcoal it stated. The color was still great, but because it didn't have as much of the gray tones, the rug didn't seem balanced in the space. I knew I needed some throw pillows too pull it all together, but it was the hardest color too match.

Fate smiled on me while I was in my local fabric store-mom and pop material stores that have been around for a long time are always my favorite. They put places like Hobby Lobby and JoAnn's to shame. Anyway, I saw this bolt and about died. It was the linen type of material that I was wanting and seemed to be a good color match. The best part was the price. It was clearanced out at $1.49 a yard! I felt like I couldn't go wrong for ten yards under fifteen bucks. I took a chance and purchased it all. The color was spot on!

Buy $6.99 pillow inserts from Ikea, follow the steps above and you will have pillows in no time and a finished project.

In the end, I am actually glad the rug had more blue tones than gray.

Techie Tuesday: How-To Switch from Google Reader to Bloglovin'

I'm sure you've all heard the news about Google Reader's slow clap into non-existence. Sad, right? Why Google?? Why?

If you're feeling overwhelmed about how to still follow all of you favorite blogs (including this one!!), never fear, The How-To Gal is here!

I love reading all of my blogs in one location or through email and think Bloglovin' is a great solution to Google Reader's demise. I've been using it for awhile and really like it. Today I've created a techie tutorial to show you how easy it is to transfer all of your Google Reader information onto Bloglovin'.

Step One: Be sure you're signed into the Google account you use to read all of your blogs.

Step Two: Go to Bloglovin.com and create an account. They make it really easy to simply connect via your Facebook account or you can sign up with an email address.

Step Three: Once your account is created, it will take you to Bloglovin's feed page. Up in the upper right hand corner, you'll see a drop down menu entitled "Account." Click on "Settings."

Step Four: In account settings, scroll down to the bottom. Under "Other" you'll see the option to "Import Blogs." Click that button.

Step Five: Choose to Import from Google Reader

Step Six: Google will pop up asking your permission for Bloglovin' to access your reader feed. Click "Allow Access."

Step Seven: Bloglovin' will then begin importing all of your saved blogs.

And that's it! All of your favorite blogs are now safely stored in your Bloglovin' feed. You can then go back to settings and choose how you would like to receive updates (daily, by email, etc).

It's the Little Things: Updating Brass Fixtures

You all know I love brass home decor, but I don't love brass fixtures, especially lights. The outside of my home had the grossest brass light fixtures. I mean gross. BUT, I really loved their shape. So I took a trick from my own book and spray painted them like I did the lights at my previous home. I think the final result is pretty fantastic. What do you think?

I know, I know...I need a clear light bulb...but I was so excited to show you how the lights looked with a new coat of paint, I couldn't wait :)

Step One: Dismantle your light fixture. I took mine off the wall as much as I could and left the part connected to the wires there. I'm no electrician! Did n't want to mess with that.

Step Two: Tape around the fixture remaining on the wall

Step Three: Spray paint the pieces. I used Rustoleum's Hammered Metal spray paint in brown.

Step Four: Remove the tape and put your lights back together!

And, because there was more paint and I wanted everything to match, I sprayed my numbers, too. Because the numbers were screwed onto the wall, I simply removed them, sprayed them and reattached them when dry.

Pretty awesome what a few coats of paint will do, right?

Making Any House a Home and Some DIY Resources

Your home is your haven—a place where you can get away from it all. You want it to be cozy and comfortable and fun to live in, while reflecting your personality and values. It would be great if you could find a home that was already all of that but, unfortunately, more often than not, you need to take the reins and make your home what you want it to be. On our home search, we ran into this exact dilemma None of the houses we looked at were "perfect," but there were elements in each that could be made perfect. It's just a matter of picking a house and making it yours. We hired a contractor to finish the basement of our new house, but there are lots of things you can do to personalize your home that do not require the help of a professional (or a lot of money).

Your Color Scheme

You could hire a professional to paint your home, but you can totally paintit yourself? Sure the painting process can be time consuming, but it can also be fun! Get your friends involved and have a painting party. For the price of a few gallons of paint and some pizza for your friends, you can have a home with bones that reflect the atmosphere you want. Watch Lowe's and Home Depot, they often run sales on paint gallons. I would also recommend hitting up local paint stores, like Kwal Paint or Sherwin Williams for mistinted buckets. Helpful Hint: Don’t do the whole house at once! Go one room at a time. Do the smaller rooms yourself and invite your friends over for the larger. This way you don’t get completely burnt out on the project before it’s finished and you won’t use up your friends’ good will in one fell swoop.

Your Windows
Do you remember that scene in First Wives’ Club when Bronson Pinchot’s character says that the windows are the eyes to the apartment ? It’s true. Your windows (and window treatments) say a lot about the home in which you live. Why would you settle for whatever curtains or blinds came with the place? You can buy blinds that are better suited to your decorating scheme (vertical, wide slatted blinds are a good idea if you have pets) and make curtains yourself.

DIY Flooring

A new floor can be an instant update in any room. Why not try your hand at putting in new flooring yourself? While you might want to hire a professional if you want to put in carpet (power stretching carpet is a MUST), putting in hardwoods is actually pretty painless. You can buy bamboo flooring, cork flooring or a variety of laminates that come in pieces that snap together. When you’re done you’ll have beautiful floors and be able to take pride in knowing that you “built them” yourself.

Beyond these basic themes, there are lots of DIY projects that will help make your home more “you.” You know I love to make over thrifty finds and paint furniture to add my personal touch. You can even make your own throw rugs and accent pieces. Have you seen Mandy's tutorial on how to merge two rugs into one?
