GoDaddy is notorious for hiding the place where you can disable automatic renewals of domains once you are logged in (apart from littering the pages during purchase process with boatloads of useless craptastic options). One would expect to find this setting somewhere under MY ACCOUNT, perhaps under ‘Account Settings’ but that is not the case to be.

Below are the steps to turn off auto renewals of all or selected domains in your GoDaddy account (between each step you might want to take a coffee/bathroom break since that’s how long it takes for GoDaddy to serve pages):

Go to Domains -> My Domains

Click on My Account at the top right

Click on Payments & Renewing Items

Now select the domains you want to stop from renewing automatically. Thankfully there is a checkbox to select all the domains.

Now here’s the highlight. You have to actually click on Auto Renew button to be able to disable auto renewals! (kind of like how you click ‘Start’ button in Windows to shut it down)

You should see the selected domains and a radio button to disable auto renewal. Select this radio button and submit changes.

That’s it. You will get one email per domain confirming your renewal setting change.

GoDaddy should consider making their web pages lighter and letting users change auto renewal and other settings easily so simple tasks like these won’t be written about with a ‘How to’ title.

(Thanks to ‘nootrope’ in #wordpress channel of irc.freenode.net)

I was searching for ways to use my computer (running Windows XP) at times when I will be holding my 5-month old baby.

Then the thought occurred: What if we can speak to the computer and give commands like “click”, “next”, “explorer” etc? I scoured the net for hours and finally found a good free program called Shoot (portable, requires no installation). Before proceeding further, you might want to look at the video below for an idea on some of the voice activated actions we are going to achieve by the end of this tutorial.

Shoot will basically interpret your voice and look in a XML file for the corresponding phrase. When a match is found, it sends the associated key strokes for that command.

Here are the steps to launch programs and do basic tasks by speaking to your computer:

Download Shoot from here. As of today, the latest stable version is 1.6.4. Extract the contents of zip file to any folder.

Shoot is a .NET 1.1 application that is not compatible with .NET 2.0. So you will need to download a replacement file for ‘shoot.exe.config’. It can be downloaded from here (free registration needed). If you would rather not sign up just to download one single file, grab it from here (No. of hits: [drain file 1 hits]). Replace the existing ‘shoot.exe.config’ file with the replacement file.

Go inside ‘profiles’ folder, copy any existing xml file to a new file and rename it (like yourname.xml)

Open the xml file in your favorite text editor (I recommend notepad++ because it has syntax highlighting and provision for collapsible code blocks)

Modify the existing commands to your desired ones between <command-list>
<command-list>
and </command-list>. Specify the toggle switch (a key) to activate and deactivate Shoot in <push-to-talk> and </push-to-talk>. You might want to use the XML file I have put together. Download it from here (No. of hits: [drain file 2 hits]). The corresponding AutoHotKey file is here (No. of hits: [drain file 3 hits]).

Want to read more about Shoot’s XML syntax? Check this link out.

Now run shoot.exe. Ctrl+O and select your profile XML file. Ensure that Shoot is active (this icon should be at the bottom window corner: and not this: ). Now Shoot is ready to take your voice commands and put them into action.

Make Shoot even more powerful with AutoHotKey

You can really take Shoot to the next level by using AutoHotKey.

Here is the workflow: Shoot translates your voice into key presses and then AutoHotKey takes over and performs the corresponding action.

If you have downloaded my XML profile file, you might have noticed that I use keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+Alt+Shift+3, for example, to open Chrome. How does this work?

I have this in the profile XML file:

<command name="Chrome" phrase="chrome">
            <key type="CTRL ALT SHIFT 3" />
        </command>

and in the AutoHotKey file:

^!+3::
	IfWinExist ahk_class Chrome_XPFrame
	{
	    WinActivate
	}
	else
	{
	    Run "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"
	    WinWait ahk_class Chrome_XPFrame
	    WinActivate
	}
	Return

The above code will check to see if Chrome is already running. If it is, it will be made the active window. If not, it will be launched.

Tips & Observations

There’s a GUI for editing Shoot’s profile XML files called Shoot Profile Editor (No. of hits: [drain file 4 hits]). I used it initially to get a hang of the commands and how Shoot works but soon found that I am faster editing the XML file in notepad++ by hand. When the cursor is in ‘Key’ field of the profile editor, press F1 to bring up a keyboard diagram from which you can click on the key sequence to be set.

After making changes to your profile, Shoot has to be restarted.

You can start Shoot directly with your profile loaded by appending the relative/absolute path of the XML file after shoot.exe. With the XML file inside ‘profiles’ folder, this didn’t work for me when using Executor. So I placed the XML file where shoot.exe is and it works fine.

Conclusion

Shoot is a good free program to launch programs and controlling your browser via voice. While you may not find yourself using it 100%, it’s good to run it at the end of the day when you are tired of all the typing/clicking and would rather have a friendly chat with your computer Don’t hesitate to share how Shoot works for you by commenting below.

The delicious add-on for Firefox lets us select some text on a web page and click on a button to add the page to your online bookmarks at delicious.com. The selected text will then be auto populated in the NOTES field of the bookmarking form. We can achieve a similar functionality in Chrome (or for that matter, any browser with little tweaking).

This post is about a AutoHotKey script using which you can select text on a web page, press a customizable hotkey and submit the page to delicious with NOTES field pre-filled automatically. All you need to do is enter/select the tags and hit Return to submit the form.

Here are the steps:

Download and install AutoHotKey if you don’t have it already present on your computer.

Download this (for XP) or this (for Vista) small ChromeToDelicious.ahk file (the contained code can be found at the end of this post) and double click on it. You should see a H shaped icon in the system tray. Keep it running.

Log into your account at delicious.com.

That’s it!

Now whenever you want to bookmark a page (Example: http://chromespot.com/) to your delicious, highlight some relevant text on the page

and press one of the default hotkeys Ctrl+Shift+B or Ctrl+Shift+D (you can change these by editing the script and reloading it) and a window pop up like this will appear:

The code:

Google Chrome does not yet offer customizable keyboard shortcuts. In the mean time, we can use AutoHotKey for setting keyboard shortcuts to common tasks like switching to previous and next tabs, going back and forward in the history, closing and un-doing last closed tab.

Update #1: Added code for opening a new tab by pressing CAPS key. This works even if Chrome is not open or not the current active application. If you want CAPS lock to work again, simply press Shift+CAPS. i.e., Shift+CAPS toggles between default functionality of the CAPS lock and tab opening in Chrome.

Update #2: Added Windows key modifier to single keys a, s, z, x, and c

Update # 3: Added shortcuts for paste and go. Details here.

This is what we are going to set:

Key

Action

Win+a or F1

Switch to previous tab

Win+s or F2

Switch to next tab

Win+z

Go back

Win+x

Go forward

Win+c or F4

Close current tab

Win+v

Paste and go

Win+Alt+v

Paste and go in a new tab

F12

Undo last tab

CAPS

Switch to Chrome and create a new tab (If Chrome isn’t already running, it opens Chrome first)

and the steps to follow are:

Download AutoHotKey and install it if you don’t have it already.

Save this (or this for Vista) small ChromeShortcuts.ahk file (the contained code can be found at the bottom of this post) and place it anywhere in your computer. Double click this .ahk file.

That’s it. Now you can use all the shortcuts mentioned in the above table while using Google Chrome.

Note: You should remove
--no-sandbox
from line 33 of the .ahk file if your Chrome has no problems in displaying web pages.

Contents of the ChromeShortcuts.ahk file:
