Ask any iPhone owner for a wish-list of improvements and I guarantee "better battery life" will be at the top.

It just seems like there's never enough juice. That's in part because we use our phones all day, and in part because batteries just wear out over time.

That's one reason I recommend keeping a mobile charger close at hand. But there are other things you can to do squeeze more runtime from your iPhone battery.

1. Find the culprits

Some apps are particularly power-hungry. But how you can determine the worst offenders?

Tap Settings > Battery, then wait for the Battery Usage section to load. Now check to see which apps are consuming the most juice. You can toggle between readings for the last 24 hours and last 7 days.

On my iPhone, messaging is the killer: Groupme and Apple's own Messages app were responsible for a whopping 30 percent of battery usage over the past week. (Your mileage may vary; I message a lot.)

This info may be actionable and it may not. The two aforementioned apps, for example, are ones I need. But if you discover power-draining apps you don't use often (or at all), consider deleting them -- or at least switching to browser-based alternatives. Speaking of which...

2. Ditch the Facebook app

As if you needed another reason to say goodbye to Facebook, the social network's iOS app seems to consume more than its fair share of power. On my iPhone, it's currently responsible for 14 percent of the battery drain over the past week. Check your settings, as described above, and see if it's similarly power-hungry on your phone.

If so, and you're not ready to abandon the service altogether, there's another option: Delete the app and access Facebook in your mobile browser. You may lose a few amenities, but in return you'll keep access to the service with considerably less impact on your battery.

3. Stop auto-fetching email

Do you really need your phone to monitor your email accounts every second of every day? That's the basic definition of "push" email, a huge battery suck.

I'm not a big fan of "fetch," either, which checks for new mail at designated intervals. My thought: When I want to check for new messages, I fire up the Mail app and check for new messages. Anything else is not only a battery drain, but also a distraction.

Try turning both of these options off. To do so, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then tap Fetch New Data. Turn off Push, then scroll down to the Fetch section and choose Manually.

Remember: If someone needs to reach you in a hurry, they can always call or send a text message.

4. Turn down the brightness

The battery-usage page won't tell you this, but nothing sucks up juice like the screen. Fortunately, there's an easy fix: knock the brightness setting down to 50 percent.

By also turning off Wi-Fi, you cut off her connectivity access. You will get an error saying, “Siri not available. You are not connected to the internet.” But you don’t care about that error because you have already bypassed the iPhone lock screen.

Other privacy holes remain

Also still an issue: Anyone can use Siri to read your new/unread text messages, send text messages and see your most recent phone call.

To do that, again prompt Siri to wake up using a finger not associated with the phone's authentication. Then say, “Read messages,” and Siri will read any unread text messages from the lock screen. To do it, again prompt Siri to wake up using a finger not associated with the phone's authentication. Then say, “Read messages,” and Siri will read any unread text messages from the lock screen. Or say, “Post to Facebook,” and Siri will ask you what you want to post to Facebook.

We tested this with a staffer’s iPhone 7, with someone other than the iPhone owner giving the commands. Siri let the person right in.

First, pick a way to erase your device

You should be able to get your network to unlock your iPhone for you - often for free. In fact, you might even be able to unlock your iPhone yourself without ever needing to contact the original provider.

Is iPhone unlocking legal?

It's completely legal to unlock your iPhone if you've finished paying for your contract or you purchased it outright unsubsidised. However, if you're still in the process of paying for your contract it means you don't fully own the iPhone yet, so you're best to check with your carrier before unlocking it.

If you're not sure whether your iPhone is locked or not, we have a guide to help you find out. The issue usually occurs if you've purchased your iPhone second-hand or inherited one from a friend or family member who has updated to a newer model. If it's locked, you'll find that the iPhone isn't working on your mobile network, and that's because it's tied to a different network.

How to unlock your iPhone

Contact your provider and request an unlock using the contact details and online tools listed below.

If you've not got the original SIM, you'll need to reset the phone before it can be unlocked.

Power down the phone, then replace the old SIM card with a SIM from a different network.

Check that the iPhone is able to connect a phone call over the new network.

Contact your network provider

EE (including Orange and T-Mobile)

If you've had your EE, Orange, or T-Mobile account for at least six months and have paid all of your bills to date, EE will unlock your iphone for you.It'll cost you £8.99 if you're still within the contract, though, and it could take up to seven days, which is not ideal.

If you're a Pay as You Go customer and have enough credit to pay the £8.99 admin fee, EE will unlock your iPhone for you at that price.

However, if you're not an EE customer and you've got an iPhone that's locked to EE, you're going to need to do some digging and if you got it from eBay the chances are it's not going to be easy. You'll need to find out the original owner's name, EE phone number, and maybe some additional account information.

Of course, it's not always going to be possible to find out the information you need, in which case you might need to use a third-party unlocking service as described later in this article.
