Here’s a rare photo kindly sent in by Paul Doleman. Taken in 1931 the image captures the resurfacing of Market Street with what I presume are some steam-powered contraptions? Can you hazard a guess as to what those machines did?

The most recent, significant, road works to Market Street were completed just prior to the 2006 Open Golf Championships. There was some criticism of the cobbled pavements at the time, but some six years on I wonder if residents and shoppers have got used to the surface?

The Liverpool Orange Lodge marched through Hoylake on Bank Holiday Monday. The march takes a route of along Birkenhead Road from St John’s Church in Meols, along Market Street, down Kings Gap and along North Parade to the lifeboat station. Due to the road works at Kings Gap the marchers had to follow the diversion of course.

As I mentioned last year, Kings Gap is so called because King William III of England (wikipedia) set sail from the Hoylake shoreline in 1690 with a 10,000 strong army to take part in the Battle of the Boyne (wikipedia). You can read more about what an Orange Order is on this wikipedia page.

J Paterson (nee Gregory) writes:

My late fathers sister and family lived at 13 Chapel Rd. My brother lived with them for some of the war and attended the infants school for a short time. They were John and Lena Roberts, John junior and Helen. John senior had a greengrocers shop somewhere near and I used to help some times in my school holidays-this would be about 1957. My family lived in Croydon I have tried on many occasions to find out by writing if my cousin still lives there, and have even travelled on one occasion from my home in (Croydon) South London. I found the graves of Lena and John Roberts in the local graveyard and went to no 13 Chapel Road but was unable to get a reply. I would like to trace Helen Roberts who emigrated to New Zealand in the 60s but have no idea how as don’t know her married name. Any information welcome! My father had a large family and step family with whom he was estranged.

A week or so ago, local business owner Chris Clare asked for photos of the building that is now his office on the corner of Wood Street/Market Street. Syd Bird came up with a couple of photos, the first of which from the 1920s shows a busy Market Street (been to the pub fellas?).

Below is the same location in the 1960s. Not the most attractive of shop fronts is it? You can read the background to Liverpool Savings Bank here and I also stumbled upon this blog about Bold Street that also discusses the bank.

The Woolcraft shop next door must have been going for years as I can remember it being there in the 1980s I reckon. If you’ve got any other photos of this block of shops feel free to send them in.
