2nd October: Abseil 101 feet down the outside of Leasowe Lighthouse. When you are at the top you can enjoy spectacular views across Leasowe Bay and the Irish Sea as well as across the Wirral. But before you take the plunge over the side take a moment to remember the brave crew of the lifeboat rowing out to the rescue of sailors in peril when 8 out of 10 lifeboat crew lost their lives 200 years ago and most importantly remember to smile as we will have a professional photographer to take your picture!

Sponsor forms and registration from Ian Davies 07525 129726 or email: Hoylake1810@Gmail.com

Abseiling times will be allocated 2 weeks before the event, minimum sponsorship £75

The Hoylake 1810 memorial fund has been set up to provide a permanent memorial to the 8 men who lost their lives while trying to save the lives of others on 22nd December 1810. For more information see this earlier post.

On Friday 30th August our allotment site was subjected to a vicious arson attack. 7 sheds, a greehouse, several fruit trees and fruit bushes were destroyed.

It does not look like the work of common or garden vandals. The fires appear to have been started on two separate plots right in the middle of the site and then it spread to others. One of the plotholders affected had a minor heart attack after the event and has given up his allotment.

So, did you happen to see anything unusual in the Sandringham Avenue area on that day? If you can provide any information please contact HoylakeAllotment@aol.com

Photo above is stock photography and not from the actual allotment site.

I’m still attempting to clear my email mountain(s) and in doing so I’ve just been viewing some great images kindly sent to me by Ian Davies (Hoylake RNLI). There are some great old photos of Hoylake and Meols that I’ll share with you all in due course but I thought I’d start by sharing this one with you.

It’s Trinity Road from years gone by – there isn’t a date so if you’d like to hazard a guess feel free. It could well date from around 1900. You can see the Parish Church in the background and of course houses hadn’t then been built on the lefthand side of the road (the view is looking up Trinity Road from near the promenade).

What was that building in the foreground where the men are standing? It’s a garage nowadays but I’m sure one of you have previously mentioned what it was used for? Was it something to do with a rope business??

Anyway, as always feel free to share your thoughts. Oh, due to a little gremlin in the system yesterday, it wasn’t possible to leave a comment on the recent Lifeboat Day post …so if you been itching to share your comments you can now. Sorry about that.

Many thanks to Ian Hazlehurst for his great photograph of the Spitfire flying over Hoylake this Bank Holiday Monday for the annual Lifeboat Day. A Hoylake man himself, you might know Ian from his Hoyle Blinds shop in Banks Road, West Kirby (formerly Hazlehurst’s Linen). Not a cloud in the sky on what was quite a lovely day in west Wirral!

Many people incorrectly presumed the Red Arrows would be appearing again, however the above Spitfire gave not one but two displays during the afternoon. Lovely to see such a graceful aeroplane that played such an important role in WW2, flying over the beach. Thanks to whoever organised it!

As I felt a little under the weather during the day I didn’t manage to walk along the promenade during the afternoon. I did however do the prom earlier in the day and I’d say that it looked pretty busy. But I’ve heard a few people say that this year’s event didn’t seem quite as busy as previous years. I’ve no idea if that’s actually correct and in fact as it’s a ticket-less, admission free event, I wonder how the visitor count is actually recorded?

Lifeboat Day does compete with other events, notably this year the Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool and the Wirral Food Festival at Claremont Farm in Bebington. The organising team behind Hoylake Lifeboat Day therefore need to put together a strong enough line up to entice visitors to come to Hoylake instead of going elsewhere.

I thought I’d give you the opportunity to offer your thoughts on what you’d personally like to see in Hoylake on Lifeboat Day. Maybe you think the day is just right, or maybe you’ve thought that it could be even better …well here’s your chance to say so!

By the way, I haven’t been asked by the organisers for your thoughts, but I’m sure they’ll be interested to hear them. Some topics to discuss could include:

the stalls along the promenade

the fairground rides and simulator rides

is the beach utilised enough – could there be more events on the beach?

although it’s free to attend is the event expensive after paying for an attraction/refreshments?

traffic management - parking problems and long traffic jams can be a problem

do local retailers in Market Street benefit from the increase in visitors

would live music be an attraction?

does Lifeboat Day indirectly promote Hoylake in regional media?

Those items are just off the top of my head to get you all thinking and I’m sure I’ve not even scratched the surface. Please feel free to have you say

Remember, if you’re commenting for the first time your comment won’t appear until I’ve checked that you’re not really another of those very annoying spammers from some far-flung place in the world.

Over to you!

If, like me, you’ve been on holiday during August then you may well have missed the jelly fish invasion.
If, like me, you’ve been on holiday during August then you may well have missed the jelly fish invasion. During the earlier part of August numerous Lion’s Mane jellyfish were found washed up on the beach. These stingers are the largest known species of jellyfish and are normally found in colder waters. My very limited research indicates that a sting from a Lion’s Mane is not known to be fatal and typically causes temporary pain and localised redness. I gather that they still sting you even when they’ve gone to jellyfish heaven.

I did take a walk out on the beach last week with the dog and we did manage to find and take a photo of one, but the above photo taken by Micheline Robinson is much better than mine.

For those of you who are reading this today …I hope you’re having a lovely, jinx-free Friday 13th! I scheduled this post the other day and today I’ll hopefully be sat on a lovely sunny beach in southern France

Many thanks to Carl Watson for today’s Friday Photo. Something a little different too but still very relevant to Hoylake. Carl says:

I wondered if anyone recognised any of these once young ladies? Taken about, I think, 1962, at a Hoylake Photo scociety “do”, on the stage of the town hall, if I remember right, with a borrowed dinghy as a prop, and a nice painted backdrop. I wasn’t a very good photographer in those days.

Do you recognise any of these three lovely ladies? Do you remember the actual photo shoot or other similar ones held at the old Town Hall? Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Mother" src="http://www.hoylakejunction.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/grave.jpg" alt="grave" width="282" height="102" />I stumbled upon the War Graves Photographic Project (official site) recently and considered it worth a mention. The aim is to undertake:

the immense task of recording, archiving and making available to the descendants, images of the graves or memorial listings of every service casualty since the outbreak of the First World War.

Whilst it appears that no photographs have yet been submitted you can view those buried at Hoylake Cemetery (Holy Trinity) by clicking this link. Of course you’ll be able to search for other local and national cemeteries. Do let me know if you subsequently contribute to this project.
