info dump for my own future reference, an anyone else who might benefit. Many parts are uncertain and should be investigated for clean up. But it works, and I have other priorities. Apologies at the mess and hard to read order, but there are plenty of other nice walkthroughs that I followed for this. I recommend one of them instead as your base, and this just as a reference.

Now, how to do code blocks in this interface...? Alas, not in the base offering of Blogger... Yuck.

System: Debian trixie/sid mixed with many stable packages, as of 2025-06-14.

Desireable: A remote access method, such as tailscale or easily opened and secured ports.

Option selected: A more native python based, rather than the docker container option.

Install pipx and dependencies via package manager of choice.

Configure some settings files in the directory, especially environment variables.

Here is a dump of my files / scripts used. Adjustments are needed.

First section includes multiple files, which should be configured per your system needs.
My mother, Sally Abbey, died suddenly Tuesday in the morning.

She died from a stroke / heart attack.

I found her early Tuesday evening on the floor.
It seems it was very sudden, with minimal suffering.

We had visited Saturday, and she had a very nice, enjoyable day. She
seemed healthy as always.

Funeral arrangements are for visitation on Friday evening and Catholic
Mass on Saturday, at 11am at Kaul's of Roseville.

Details are on her online obituary.
Mom is with Jesus, and no longer missing Dad.

Apple is working to improve its maps offering by collecting camera and other data, as reported by The Verge on 6/10/2015.

One of the vans had been previously spotted in June in downtown Detroit, as shown on a map of Apple Map van sightings collected by Mac Rumors. The earliest listed was in 8/2014. The last update to the map was in 7/27/2015, so I will not bother submitting this sighting

The two new (as far as I know) items that the 12/10/2015 sighting adds

The van had "Apple Maps" written on the side. Early sightings, before Apple announced the project publicly, did not have this.

Apple has apparently finished focusing on downtown Detroit, and is now working on the suburban expressways. (The van changed from eastbound I-696 to westbound I-696.) They do not yet seem to be focused on residential areas in Detroit, unlike reported sightings in other metropolitan areas.

It was written in 2005, but I found it still useful.
However, the toolbar icon mentioned in that page was not found in Office 2010.

Below is another method for identifying the computer encoding number associated with a character one has but does not know.

In Windows 7, there is Private Character Editor (eudcedit.exe), which can be started from search box of Start menu. It requires administrative permissions to run.
Once opened,

Select an empty box to open a character editor.

Make sure in upper left, Character Set selected is Unicode

Select on the menu Edit, then Copy Character

Click in the Shape box to activate.

Paste in a single unknown character of interest from the Windows clipboard, and the numeric code should be listed above it in hexadecimal.

This was the easiest way I found to identify non-ASCII characters.

The two characters I was looking for were ° (0x00B0) and ℃ (0x2103).

To go from number to display of character to copy, charmap.exe is the program I recommend using.

She is usually OK, but once in a while gets lonely.

She had a doctor appointment on Thursday. Her blood sugar level was really good, at 95. In general, she seems healthy. Mom asked if there was anything that could be done to help her memory. (I think it is worse than it was a couple months ago, in some respects.) The doctor said she needs some people to talk to. Being alone too much is not helping her memory.

The social worker that is affiliated with the doctor had her second and last visit on Friday. She recommended, but did not require, assisted living for Mom. In other words, Mom and I would get benefit from some of the services, but there is not an urgent safety need for them. Mom is still adamant about not moving, although sometimes she is open to considering a senior apartment. She wants to stay in the same area, and not move closer to me, because she knows that area, and would feel like she would have to learn where all the stores are in a new area.

The social worker also gave some recommendations on home care / private duty care providers, a new louder phone, and on pill dispensers that are timed to help Mom remember to take her medicine. The pill dispenser comes with a monthly charge for a monitoring service, so that does not really sound like what we want.

The phone answering machine quit working about a week ago. I am not planning on replacing it because Mom had a lot of trouble with it anyway. Without one, the phone can keep ringing, giving her more time to hear it, and get to it.

Today Mom came and visited our house for the first time. She said she had a good time. We wanted to get her away for the day, because 45 years ago today, Mom and Dad were married.

So I would say things are going OK, but not great near term, and still a lot of uncertainly long term. I am glad Mom is safe and healthy.

Mom considered safe to stay at home alone.

A meeting at the house with a medical social worker today was uneventful and went well.
She was convinced that Mom is safe at home. She is going to help by making some recommendations for pill dispenser with alarm reminder, and phone ringer with flashing light. The nurse,
after her second visit, was less worried as well.

The social worker seemed surprised that the hired help from before, the private duty care, would not want to work in the house with the current level of clutter. Of course, Aunt Luise cleaned up a lot since then, and the social worker did not look into Dad's old room which is still quite a bit cluttered. However, she has hopes that a firm she will recommend will work with the current situation, and do light housekeeping such as some vacuuming, ignoring the areas that are too cluttered to be anything other than storage.

Mom's cold that she got around 11/1/2014 seemed to be about the same or maybe slightly worse, so a doctor appointment was scheduled for today.

The doctor appointment today went OK. Mom's sugar was very high, so Mom got a stern reprimand to consistently take her pills. She had forgotten this morning. (I was unsure if she had forgotten, or had incorrectly taken the pills from the wrong day, so I did not push her to take them when I arrived.)

It did not help matters that Mom claimed she had not been taking pills for months... Her memory was really mixed up at that point. I reassured the doctor that Jodi had been setting them up and that Mom
had been taking them, but less consistently than we would like....

Mom also got to be a pin-cushion. Blood drawn successfully on the 4th attempt, sugar adjustment shot in the belly, flu shot, another shot, and a B12 shot. Mom's attitude was good through that.

Doctor Chen said he would arrange for a nurse to occasionally visit Mom to check up on her.
Doctor also said that he wants to see her in a month, to make sure how she is doing. He seems worried about her living by herself, mainly if she cannot remember to take her pills.

The cold was looked at, including X-rays, but seemed to be OK from his perspective.

So good news that the cold is not serious, and good news that a visiting nurse might be coming to help keep an eye on things.

Mom not great, but OK, I am fine

I am doing OK, keeping too busy to really be affected by much.

However, I want to share some areas that I think we can learn from my father, Harold Abbey.

Dad loved Mom deeply. Many of the health care workers got to see love expressed in ways that were not possible when they were both healthy. When Mom was near death due to a stroke a year ago, Dad said that he wanted to hear Mom yell at him, because then he would know she was OK. Dad cried out desperately to God to save her, and God in His mercy did. So He got his desire to be yelled at. Even in much of their bickering, you could tell that Mom and Dad deeply loved each other. When Dad was ill himself, he fought the best he could because he worried about Mom, and wanted to care for her. Even his cheapness reflected love. He loves God, and wanted to not waste God's money, and he loved Mom, and feared that she would not have enough during retirement years.

Dad was tight with his money for himself, but was generous as he felt he could be with others. He knew however that money alone often can only make underlying issues worse, so he tried to be careful.
Dad would have spoiled me badly, but he did not have it to give. He told me he was glad he did not have it, because he knew it would not be good for me.
Dad hated to see anything go to waste. He felt he should not throw away items that God had given to him to take care of.
Even the items in the dumpster at the Hudson's department store, such as cabinets, lumber, light fixtures, and much else was salvaged. It has blessed many of the family and friends.
Dad worried greatly about doing right by everyone, including his family. As example, I had made it clear that I would not get enough use out of Grandma O'Hare's cottage to make it worthwhile. My Dad became a friend of Sean O'Hare a few years ago. Sean's father helped build the cottage, so my Dad and Mom decided that keeping it in the family by letting Sean have it would be good. However, Dad asked me repeatedly before, during, and after signing it over if it was OK, and even long after he would apologize and explain that he thought I was not interested in it. I reassured him each time that I was very glad it is now Cousin Sean's.
He worried about making trouble for the doctors he was seeing. He repeatedly said to his chemotherapy nurse that he was sorry for being a bother.

Dad took promises very seriously. He was slow to promise, considering if there was any way he might not be able to do what he said. Once promised, he followed through. The promise that most affected my life was one that I did not learn of till my late teens. Dad and Mom are both Christians, trusting Jesus's death to allow erasing their many mistakes. Dad attended a baptist church, Mom a Catholic one, when they were dating. To marry a Catholic, Dad had to promise to not interfere with the Catholic upbringing of any children resulting from the marriage. They were married in 1969. I did not arrive till six years later. Dad strongly wanted me to know about Jesus. However, he took his promise to mean that he could not occupy my Sunday mornings with non-Catholic church services. Without Dad's leading, Mom rarely took me to church either. So my spiritual upbringing was from Dad and the TV and radio preachers that he made sure I was exposed to, such as Dr. D. James Kennedy. While not ideal, my Dad did his best while keeping the promise.
This also applied to meeting times. He was usually at least 5 minutes early to any appointment. If he was sick or unable to make some appointment, he worried greatly about it.
Because of Dad, I have learned that a man's word, his reputation, is valuable, and possible to be valued.

Dad never claimed to be smart, but he could study things and do okay, and he knew to ask for help figuring out things. Sean felt like he could ask advice, and Dad would do his best to give good advice to him. At an early age, he taught me to teach myself. When I would come to a new word while reading, rather than teaching me directly the meanings, he taught me to use a dictionary. That method has helped my whole life, long after I started reading items outside Dad's vocabulary.

Dad liked trees, and the birds and wildlife that comes with them, and he also liked that the shade reduced the frequency of grass cutting. He took grandpa's orchard and turned it into a forest of over 100 trees large and small on a third of an acre of land. When I was in elementary school, that came in somewhat handy this time of year, because the house looked very spooky to other kids my age. That significantly reduced the number of pranks pulled.
Dad cared about the trees, about the salvaged junk, about his pets, but much much more he cared about the people God put around him, strangers, friends, and family. He cared even more about me, and even more about Mom. All of this was because he cared most about God, and did his best to serve Christ, his savior.
Now Dad is serving his, and our, God with no fear of doing so in less than the best way possible.
I pray we continue to learn from the parts of his life that were a good example for us.
Thanks.

<georss:box>42.498169878492938 -82.938301510314943 42.50402287849294 -82.92821651031494</georss:box>

Funeral times Friday after 4, Saturday 10:30

Funeral details have been arranged.
Friday, 10/31/2014, visitation and viewing at 3:30pm for immediate family.
Friday, 10/31/2014, viewing anytime from 4:00pm till 9:00pm for the public.
Saturday, 11/1/2014, All Saints Day, viewing from 10:00am to 11:00am
Saturday, 11/1/2014, 11:00am funeral service, followed by grave-side service.

Visitation and funeral service is at Kaul Funeral Home, 27830 Gratiot; Roseville, MI 48066.
The grave is at Cadillac Memorial Gardens, East, across a pathway from Dad's parents, brother, and other relatives.

It was somewhat amusing arranging the funeral with Mom. The funeral home manager walked us through the process with much patience and understanding. He started us off with a price list and pointed us toward a mid-price package. Mom let her sticker shock be very well known that even that lower price option was way more than she expected. After that initial price offer, I was more than willing to enjoy the round about in circles that went on while I was half working on some other items related to the funeral. For example, I think Mom asked 3 times about what a OBC was (outer burial container), which she knew as a vault, the studier box that holds the coffin in the ground. Dad had already purchased those, so that was not even a relevant part of the discussion, but was listed on one of the price lists.

We ended up with working up from the base package. So things that make it pretty or memorable were skipped, such as a package of flower arrangements, or a necklace with a pendant with a thumbprint of Dad.
We hope that all visitors will not be distracted from the relationships and memories because these extra trimmings are missing.

By the way, Jodi and I got to see pictures of the very cheapest (still not cheap in my opinion) caskets made of cardboard. I made it clear to Jodi that I want the 2nd cheapest, which does not look exactly like a cardboard box, but, in Jodi's phrase, looks a bit like a matchbox.

Mom is having some rough times, but some joyful times with family as well.

Fyi flowers option

From funeral home:

Mom, Sally Abbey, misses him greatly already.

Dad no longer needs medication to be free from physical pain.
He died.

I know some of you may have heard or read already, because of the
calls, visits, and writings of condolence and support. Thank you.

My father passed from life to death to second life around 3pm today, 10/28/2014.
He had been resting peacefully, with the aid of medicine, the last couple days.
Hospice was a great help with taking care of all the details.

I am glad Uncle Chuck and Aunt Luise were there to help physically and
emotionally, and are staying with Mom to help during this time.

Mom is okay, but not good. She seems very drained at times, and at a
bit of a loss how to live without her husband of 44 years. She had
her first good rest last night, and I have strong hopes that the long,
stressful day today will result in good rest tonight. We will be
meeting with the funeral home tomorrow, so that will be a hard time on
her I suspect.

Dad's strong belief of the gift of his King, the Lord Christ, for his
post-death existence gives me great comfort.

Funeral details are not yet arranged, but we are planning a Friday
evening visitation and a funeral on Saturday at Kaul Funeral Home, 27830 Gratiot; Roseville, MI 48066.

Details should be posted at the funeral home web site once they are
known. I will probably also copy them here.

May God continue to show himself a sustainer to my Mom through these difficult days.

Harold Abbey with Jesus now

Mom called around 3:12 pm to let me know Dad is dead. Funeral details are not yet known, but plans are for Kaul Funeral Home of Roseville.

Hospice has been a great help to Dad, Mom and me.

Uncle Chuck and Aunt Luise came to visit a few days starting this evening and already have been a great help.

Dad is very non-responsive now and very thin looking. He has not been taking liquids for the last day.
So it looks to be soon that he will get to see Jesus.

Mom seems very OK when talking to others and distracted. She seems very sad when she thinks about Dad, but seems healthy about it.
