Shakespeare leaner in '09

The 2009 Virginia Shakespeare festival that opens Wednesday will be a little leaner than in past seasons. Producing Artistic Director Christopher Owens told me his $260,000 budget is about $20,000 less than last year. The reduction reflects the tough economic times, he says, as he's anticipating about a 15 to 20 percent drop in donations and grants this season.

Symphony to pay tribute to films' musical scores

Associate Conductor Matthew Kraemer is planning a salute to film music for the Virginia Symphony's free outdoor concerts coming up this week. The popular outings take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday in City Center, Newport News, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday on the lawn of Walter Reed Hospital off Route 17 in Gloucester.

In a recent speech to the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads, economist James Koch offered a somewhat gloomy forecast on how the arts are faring in these tough economic times. His overview takes on a painful reality when I read daily reports about companies across the country that have canceled productions, or worse, been forced out of business.
