Recently, I saw someone I hadn’t seen in awhile. He was not a smart boy, in fact his main way through school was being a jock. I’m sure the only A’s he got was for gym class. This boy is now a man with a PhD and by all means, is very successful. He’s married, has a child, a beautiful home and may even be the top doctor in his city.

You know what? This just goes to show, if you want to do something you can. You will learn it if you want to. As Dianne points out in the article, trust in God as you prepare your child for life after school.

Nearly ten years ago, I was struck with an incredible illness. Overnight, I was unable to get out of bed. I couldn’t run errands, clean my house, or school my children. I was absolutely dependent on other people.

I don’t know what I would have done without the friends and family that cared for me and my family while I regained my strength and literally got back on my feet. I will never forget the sacrifices they made and the kindness that other people showed me. I try to repay those blessings as often as I can. When I do, there are a few things that I keep in mind when ministering to a sick friend.

1. Be patient.

I literally went from feeling great to not being able to get out of bed in a matter of days. Until that point in my life, I had always been very independent which made it difficult for me to accept help from others.

I remember a friend coming to clean my house and instead of allowing her to work, I followed her from room to room trying to help. Finally, I collapsed on the couch and fell asleep, much to her relief!

2. Meals are wonderful while your friend is in the hospital and when she first arrives home, but the recovery process can take weeks and sometimes months, or longer. Don’t forget them just because they seem to be doing better. When I started to improve, I wanted to use every ounce of energy holding my children and reading books to them on the couch. I didn’t want to use my new found oomph to cook meals. Needless to say, we ate a lot of takeout during that time- my waist still hasn’t recovered.

3. I loved visitors but not if they stopped by unannounced. Don’t forget to visit, but keep your visits brief. I know it’s difficult to visit a sick person but I’ll never forget the friend that would sit by my bed and talk to me while her husband visited with my husband in the other room.

4. I was grateful to my friends for including my children in a co-op, field trip, trip to the park and even for homeschooling them when I couldn’t.

Once my husband was sure that I wasn’t going to die, he went back to work. We couldn’t afford for him to take off more time, but that left the kids unattended much of the day. As much as I hated it, there were times that the television and computer became their babysitter and substitute teacher. Thank goodness for the History Channel and all the various computer programs for homeschoolers!

I was grateful that friends regularly asked my kids to join them for the day. It allowed me to rest guilt-free and gave the kids a taste of normalcy.

5. Phone calls are wonderful, but don’t forget that your friend may not have the strength emotionally, or physically to handle many. Keep your conversations brief. And for heavens’ sake, if you call and leave a message and your call is not returned, do not get offended! Greeting cards are a wonderful alternative to phone calls and will let your friend know that you are thinking of them.

6. Don’t forget to pray for your friend and her family.

7. Your friends’ illness puts a strain on the rest of the family. Do you feel led to help the family? There are so many needs and if your friend
is anything like me, she won’t feel comfortable asking for help. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Do a load of laundry for the family.

Clean the house.

Help the kids with their school work or do a fun activity, like an art project or science experiment.

Keep the kids overnight.

Treat the kids to ice cream.

Read to the kids.

Play a game with the kids.

Walk the family dog.

Take the kids for a walk.

Run errands for the family.

Drive your friend to doctor appointments so her husband doesn’t have to miss work.

Make copies of worksheets needed for school.

Drop-off or pick- up books at the library.

Buy your friend cute PJ’s to lounge in.

Take your friend to get her hair done if she feels up to it, if not, fix her hair at home.

8. Finally, lend a listening ear. If your friend needs to talk, listen and remember that they have good days and bad days.

When I was recovering, I bounced back and forth between being grateful that I could walk outside in the fresh air, to being upset that I didn’t have the energy to walk the five miles that I had before my illness. Let them vent. It’s normal.

Finally, remember that your friend may have gotten sick overnight, but chances are the road to recovery is not as swift. A life threatening illness is very stressful and not easily forgotten. I may look and talk like the same person I’ve always been, but my life is forever changed.

What are some ways that you have ministered to a friend in need?

If you have boys at home, you probably already know that most boys are experiential, hands-on learners. Most boys have little patience for worksheets; they much prefer real-life learning. So why not make your home (and homeschool) boy-friendly?

Here , then, is my list of the 10 Essential Supplies for Homeschooling Boys:

1. Blocks. A good set of wooden, unit-based blocks can be expensive, but they’re oh-s0-worth it! A set of blocks will inspire your sons’ imaginations for years. (My 30-yr-old brothers still have block building contests with my sons.) They also lay a firm foundation for the study of math and geometry.

2. Tools. Every boy should have access to a hammer, nails, scrap wood and tape measure. Also useful: screwdrivers, screws, wrenches, sandpaper and safety goggles. Working with tools is a great way for young boys to develop fine motor skills (try handing your preschooler a large bolt and some nuts). It’s also another way to bring math into the real world. The tools can be used to take apart old appliances too, which can lead to all sorts of interesting mechanical and electrical investigations.

3. Playdough. Whether you make your own or buy it in a can, playdough provides infinite hours of educational fun. Your boys can experiment with color mixing (science) or create various shapes to see if they’ll float in water (more science!). They can practice writing in playdough or craft letters (language arts). They can create sculptures (art) or “bullets” (yes, my boys did this once, but it was a fine bit of imaginative play!). My boys once even spent a whole morning making and “selling” playdough food (math, language arts). Working with playdough is a great way to strengthen the small muscles of the hands too. (You know, the ones that are important for writing).

4. Maps and globes. Want your boys to learn with almost minimal input from you? Hang a map in your bathroom. You’d be surprised what your sons learn! My boys have a pretty good grasp of geography –and have learned to read some pretty complex words — from the world map that hangs in our downstairs bathroom.

5. Cardboard boxes. In the hands of a young boy, a cardboard box can become anything. We once used a bunch of old boxes to play a real-world version of the Oregon Trail computer game. We’d been reading about the Oregon Trail, and the boys loved the game. So we pulled a bunch of boxes down from the attic, labeled them with prices and titles (“Salt Pork,” “Flour”) and has the boys “pack the wagon.” We’ve also used cardboard boxes to build solar ovens and boats.

6. Playing cards. Almost all of my boys learned their numbers by playing the classic card game, War. A simple deck of playing cards can be used to reinforce basic math skills as well. When the boys got older, War got harder. We’d each play two cards; whichever player’s cards added up to a higher number won the hand. Card games also teach critical thinking, memory and basic statistics. Some boys love to build with them too.

7. Dirt. Give boys a plot of dirt and the freedom to play and explore, and watch your budding scientist or earthmover get to work. My boys have planted seeds and watched them grow. They’ve carefully investigated the soil and its inhabitants. And they’re created all sorts of ponds and streams and dams — real-life, real-world experiments that taught them a ton about hydrology.

8. A library card. Get your son a library card as soon as possible, and let him check out books of his liking. Don’t set too many restrictions, either. Some kids are ready to check out books from the adult section. (My oldest loves fishing books; my 11- yr-old loves a HUGE compendium of baseball cards). Your sons can also access all kinds of music, DVDs and ebooks at the local library.

9. A computer. I realize that this “essential” might be controversial. It is possible to educate your son without a computer. However, I’d argue that you’re doing him a great disservice. Computers are here to stay, and odds are good that your son will need to interact with a computer almost every day as an adult. Computers, like library cards, are also a window to the world. (But I don’t have to convince you, do I? You’re reading a blog, online).

10. A loving, caring adult. This is THE single most important item on the list. With a loving, caring adult nearby, a boy can learn anything. Listen to your son. He’ll tell (and show you) what he needs. Pay attention to his interests, and do your best to nourish them. If you know nothing about his chosen area of interest, hook him up with other people who do. Learn with him. Love him! A boy who is loved and supported is able to learn and explore.

If your family is anything like our family we can always use a good lesson teaching us more about how to walk in love with one another. It is no secret that when we spend a lot of time with another human being; conflict is inevitable. Homeschooling families face a unique challenge in the “love” department as we tend to spend more time with one another than families that do not homeschool.

The reality is, if we can “master” walking in love with our family members that we see on a day-to-day basis, treating those outside of the home will become a bit more natural to us. However, I am not suggesting that we’ll ever be “perfect” in this area of our lives, rather that the practical application of the 5 following steps will certainly build our character to respond to others with self control and love.

This list has been birthed out of lots of prayer and time spent discussing passages of scripture with my husband over the last 13+ years. While many of the items listed are not “new” to our family, we believe it is crucial to continue to apply these steps to help our homeschool and family grow in God’s love and grace entering into 2012, and beyond.

Read, discuss, and confess Bible scriptures that speak of God’s love and treating one another kindly. For our family this is always done at the meal table every time we eat. Here are some scriptures to get you started: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, Luke 6:31, John 3:16, 2 Timothy 1:7, Ephesians 5:1-2, 1 John 3:16-18.

Teach your child(ren) the importance of guarding the words that come out of their mouths. We have found that it is crucial to teach our child(ren) from the beginning of their life the power that words {positive and negative} have over our lives. You can refer to Proverbs 18:21.

Create opportunities every day for your child(ren) to do a kind act or speak kind words toward one another. For example, recently I had the children each draw their daddy (who is currently deployed to Afghanistan) a photo depicting their “love” for him. After each child finished, they talked about what their drawings meant and then the other two children would complement them on their creativity and heart for daddy.

Once a week, we have a “love day” that we focus on the topic of love. Depending on our focus that week, we use books, movies, and songs to demonstrate more depth about the importance of loving one another.

Once a month, we serve others in need. During the month of December we were able to cook several meals for a family who had been suffering major illnesses. This brought great joy to the children and I as well as providing them with a living example of love in action.

While this list of 5 practical ways to walk in love while you homeschool is not obsolete, it will give you and your family a great foundation for an increased love for others. We have seen these principles help our family work through several “rough spots” during our 8 years of homeschooling. And the good news is that when you have an atmosphere of love in your home, you can’t help but display it towards everyone you meet. Now that is a beautiful thing!

We all know how important the homeschool schedule is. Without it, our lives are often chaos and confusion, with sometimes hours of the day wasted just trying to figure out who’s going where when, what’s coming up next and where did I put the reading comprehension sheets again.

As with most aspects of our life, we get thrown curve balls and have to deal with unforeseen and definitely unplanned circumstances in our homeschool. For example, our very first day of school in September, I fell and sprained my ankle. I was down for a week and a half, no school. Then, the three kids took turns getting colds all through the month of October. November came around, and it was the flu and bronchitis (another two weeks down). Finally, when we were all better, and ready to get back into the swing of things – we only had three weeks left until Christmas break.

I am the kind of person who likes to have most things planned out. If not on paper, then at least in my brain. But when you’re struggling with pain, fatigue, illness, daily routine, groceries, and a billion other things that we moms have to think about, things start to break down.

As much as I love scheduling, I still find I have a hard time getting it done. It isn’t that a schedule takes hours to complete – no, it’s more like 30 minutes tops. I have the great editable Homeschool Planner from Jolanthe at Homeschool Creations, and I just love it! But sometimes, when things are hectic and we’re recovering from illness or vacation, I just don’t get around to the schedule by Sunday afternoon.

So, what are we to do if our schedule doesn’t get, well, scheduled, and we’re flying by the seat of our pants every day trying to remember what comes next?

A good, simple, short-term solution, is to create a “shoestring” schedule! A bare bones, minimum “this is what we need to do to make it through” list to help you get your head back in the game.

It’s a great solution if:

You’re back from vacation and you want to continue with schoolwork (but are trying to get things organized)

You’re recovering from sickness and haven’t quite gotten back up to full strength

You’ve started headlong into the week after a busy weekend and you just can’t seem to catch a break to schedule in the pages for daily subjects.

Just spend a few minutes in the morning writing down what you want to accomplish for each child that day, and go from there! Simple, right?

Another idea for helping make the next day even less stressful: as you finish each lesson, take a moment to write down the next day’s pages, and ta da! You’ve relieved your mind from the stress of thinking ahead and trying to remember everything that needs to get done. You will also find yourself to be in a much better mood and frame of mind to actually teach rather than zip through lessons to just get the check mark.

I find it also helps to keep a list of ideas for younger ones handy, in case I don’t get around to planning out our activities each day. Large Families on Purpose has a SUPER comprehensive list of ideas for young kids, which is great for planning or last minute, quick-I-need-something-to-keep-the-toddler-out-of-the-pencil-shavings!

While a “shoestring” schedule is okay for short term, I wouldn’t recommend continuing without a more comprehensive schedule for a long period of time. You may find yourself stressed out and behind on the work you had planned to accomplish.

If you aren’t sure where to start with scheduling, there are some great posts already here on the site. Also, consider getting a homeschool planner. Some great options are offered from Donna Young, Homeschool Creations , and The Old Schoolhouse.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you give yourself a break after the unplanned interruptions of life – unload your goals and desires onto that piece of paper or into that word document, then work toward them so you can get everyone back on track and continue enjoying your homeschooling journey.

I’m so excited that in just three short months (Oh my – 3 months?), I’ll be speaking at The 2:1 Conference.

From the 2:1 website about the conference:

2:1 is the premier conference for bloggers like you - mothers, in the trenches of homeschooling, with hearts for God. What are your desires for your faith, your homeschool, your blog this year? Would you like these to grow in His grace? Then join us.

Doesn’t that sound amazing? I’m just as excited about seeing all of the wonderful speakers (and meeting new people) as I am about having a chance to speak. A glimpse at the wonderful speakers:

Christine Young from From Dates to Diapers

Amy Andrews from Blogging with Amy (which happens to be one of my favorite blogs about blogging!)

Amy Roberts from Raising Arrows

Carisa Hinson from 1+1+1=1

and Totally Tots

Jolanthe Erb from Homeschool Creations

Kris Bales from Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers

Stef Layton from Educating Layton (and The Homeschool Village)

Toni Anderson from The Happy Housewife

And so many more wonderful speakers! Really — it’s almost ridiculous how many great speakers there are.

There will be talks on homeschooling and on blogging, and often, you’ll have a choice between which type of talk you want to attend. Even when I knew a lot of the topics, I was kind of blown away when I looked at the schedule for the 2:1 Conference. So many wonderful choices!

So, here’s the fun part about this post. We get to give away one ticket to the 2:1 Conference. You’ll be responsible for all of your other expenses (although the conference ticket will take care of your meals during the actual conference), but that will help you shave about $200 off of your trip would normally cost!

Now, here is where I have to make a special note. You may have noticed that Amy from Raising Arrows had a ticket to give away two weeks ago. Then, Kris from Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers had a ticket to give away last week. And, now here we are with The Homeschool Classroom this week. So, you might be thinking, “I’m in no rush, there will be another giveaway around the bend next week.” But, sadly, this is the end of the road for the weekly giveaways of the tickets to the 2:1 Conference.

To enter for a chance to win a ticket to the 2:1 Conference, just write a blog post about why you would like to attend the 2:1 Conference. Then, link it up in our linky below. One winner will be randomly chosen from those that have linked up by Saturday, January 28th at 11:59 pm EST. Once a winner is contacted, they will have 72 hours to respond to claim their prize.

Updated to Add Winner: Melissa from The Langford Life. Congratulations, Melissa!

Although I typically fix a hot lunch for my kids each day, during our summer break, I instituted one do-it-yourself lunch day a week. This was a day when each child (ages 10-16) was responsible for fixing his or her own lunch, which usually involved heating up some leftovers or fixing something simple — like scrambled eggs, ham roll-ups, or Ramen noodles.

I didn’t think I would carry that over into our school year, since I didn’t want them to have to take time away from their job of getting an education to fix lunch, but I discovered that it really doesn’t take that long and they’re learning some important life skills in the process.

Depending on what our schedule is like, we may not have one do-it-yourself day every week, but most weeks we do. Rather than complain, the kids actually seem to enjoy it. Some fun ideas for do-it-yourself lunches for kids of a variety ages include:

Sandwiches or wraps.

Mini-pizzas (built on bagels, flat wraps, or tortillas)

Ham roll-ups

Soup

Scrambled eggs

Salad

Left overs

Pizza bread (pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and your choice of toppings on half a hamburger or hot dog bun or half a sub roll)

Salad

Homemade “lunchables” (turkey, ham, or pepperoni on square or round crackers topped with cheese)

Macaroni and cheese

Frozen pizza

Cheese quesadillas

Hot dogs

Loaded potato bar (Just fix the potatoes ahead of time and everyone adds their favorite toppings.)

Omelets (My son is a master omelet-maker.)

Tacos or nachos (Again, make the meat ahead of time or just use beans instead. Put out the toppings and let everyone create their masterpiece.)

Kabobs (Provide skewers and a variety of meat, veggies, and/or fruits.)

Tuna salad (My oldest makes the tuna and the kids eat it on crackers more often than on sandwiches. I like it on a sliced tomato.)

As a homeschooling mom of 3, it is no secret that sometimes I have to climb Mount Laundry. I have tried many systems including having a set laundry day where we would basically have a laundry party and do laundry all day long. I realized quickly that system does not work well for us. So after struggling and struggling with Mount Laundry, I have finally found a system that is working for us. The best part is – it is so easy!

We follow these simple steps to a hallelujah chorus of clean underwear for everybody by the end of the week:

1. Each person has an assigned day of the week for laundry. We have 5 members of our family so that also gives us Saturday as a towel and sheet day or catch up day. Here is our break down of days:

Monday – Me

Tuesday – Hubby

Wednesday – Jonathan

Thursday – Stephen

Friday – Sarah

Saturday – towels, sheets, catch up day if needed

2. Teach the children to do their own laundry on their day. My kids absolutely love being in charge of their own laundry. Can you believe that? They love it and so do I. They are in charge of everything. We are still at the stage where mom must be there to supervise right now but I can tell they are getting the hang of laundry duties quickly.

3. Do not sort. I repeat – do not sort. Okay, I know that may weird some of you out, and please don’t tell my mom, but I’m telling you it works for us. I used this method recently when we were staying in a hotel and all our clothes turned out fine, so we went for it. This makes it so easy for the children too. No more statements like, “Is this your sock or your brother’s.” Nope! And the best of all – no more sock basket! Doesn’t everyone have the bottomless pit called the sock basket? Maybe not, but we sure did. The socks are not being eaten by the washing machine as much either.

Those are my simple steps to sanity and freedom and I’ll take as much of those as I can get! What does your laundry routine look like?

When Melissa isn’t busy supervising her children’s laundry chores, she can be found over at Grace Christian Homeschool where she writes mostly about the adventures of homeschooling.
